Obama Campaign Explains College Trip To Pakistan

Yesterday I noted here that Obama, speaking at a fundraiser, had made an offhand reference to a trip he took to Pakistan while in college.

Though he had never referred to the trip before, a bunch of you readers dismissed this as non-news. But a number of reporters asked Obama's press team about the trip yesterday, and now Team Obama has laid out the facts of the matter:

In 1981 -- the year Obama transferred from Occidental College to Columbia University -- Obama visited his mother and sister Maya in Indonesia. After that visit, Obama traveled to Pakistan with a friend from college whose family was from there. The Obama campaign says Obama was in Pakistan for about three weeks, staying with his friend's family in Karachi and also visiting Hyderabad in Southern India.

What does it say about your credibility (and the credibility of your wall of lies post) that you keep proposing Clinton/Obama?

Your constant spinning is making me dizzy.

Take a look at this:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/04/08/new-book-mccain-once-phys_n_95595.html

Do YOU want this man to win the presidency?

Hillary's campaign is going positive, why not take a hint from her (a real leader) and try it yourself

Whoever wins the Dem nod, we need to mend fences and stop McCain from winning.

He's antithetical to everything Obama and Clinton supporters stand for.

It's not even a matter of the lesser of two evils. It's a matter of good vs. evil when it comes to the Dem nominee vs. McCain.

Why is this news? Why is this an issue? It's only "news" if you let Republicans control the messaging, and use a simple trip to a foreign country as a way to depict Obama as a scaaaary Muslim.

It'll be refreshing to have a President who not only knows that there's a country outside of America, but who's been to one or two of them.

"It'll be refreshing to have a President who not only knows that there's a country outside of America, but who's been to one or two of them."

I'd argue that this is precisely why the trip was news.

"I'd argue that this is precisely why the trip was news."

Sorry Greg, this is the definition of disingenuous. If you'd argue that, then why didn't you argue that in the piece that you wrote? It would have made good context. Instead you wrote two separate pieces on this claiming it was news, without any substance or context to give it meaning or to frame its importance. Then you have the temerity to post this in the comments section??? I don't think so.

And who was this "friend"? I think it's obvious. Osama bin Laden.

Re: Quote:
"And who was this "friend"? I think it's obvious. Osama bin Laden."

Nope. You're forgetting that Osama is G.Dubb's friend. You did see "Fahrenheit 911" didn't you?

Yeah, the press may want to double check this, but I hear there were Muslims in each of those places he visited.

user-pic

The only reason this is news is because I guraantee we will be hearing about it from the GOP 527s sometime down the road. By bringing this story out now it gives us a chance to immunize Obama from the coming unfair attacks.

Obama knows this, that is why he is telling us about it. Don't jump ugly on Greg for repeating what Obama said. If anything Greg is helping Obama.

user-pic

But the key question remains: did he meet the llama?

That IS the question. It's about time Obama get this Lama off his back. We demand answers now!

user-pic

That depends on what your definition of "IS" is...

Sounds like a similar trip I made abroad to Paris and to London after graduation from college in 2005. Hotel La Manufacture, although called a hostel, was one of the best that I'd stayed in during that trip. If anyone's going to Paris, I'd definitely recommend Hotel La Manufacture for the continental breakfast alone. Plus, it's in the 13th Arrondisement, and is right off the Place d' Italie subway stop so you can easily travel around Paris.

I really should go back to Paris sometime, when the dollar isn't pathetically low compared to the Euro.

So you admit to be an American hating Muslim?

Nah, I'm a commie pinko since I visited Montmarte, that dreaded artists' haven, while in Paris.

Yawn

Dick Cheney has made a number of Trips to Pakistan.

Better keep an eye on Dick Hussain Cheney.

It puts that so called American in a whole different light .

Shooting accident my arse. How do we know that Dick Hussain Cheney was not running a training camp in Texas when he supposedly accidentally shot someone.

Greg,

Just because "a number of reporters" ask about something doesn't make it news and certainly doesn't refute the "bunch of readers" who thought it a non-story. That's one of the silliest reasonings as to what makes something news I've ever heard.

OMG! He went to India? Maybe he's secertly a soma-swilling Hindu! I hear that the GOP has a photo of Obama with an orange dot on his forehead to prove this, and that they're waiting to roll this out at the proper time. I also heard that he was forced to marry a goat while he was in Karachi, something about some angry farmer....it's all true, I swear! A friend of a friend saw it in the reader comments on HufferPost!

Hindus? You surely mean muslims. I saw it somewhere on the internets.

I tell you, there's Hindus in India! Obama went to India, therefore he must be a Hindu!

I wouldn't rule out that he's one of those Cultists from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

Proof?

I didn't see any of them wearing flag pins.

Cooincidence? I think not.

user-pic

Don't get why this is news.

What is political news is that Clinton is trying to compare her campaign's response to that of the Obama campaign's response to Goolsbee....and to Clinton, it's a case that her campaign handled it much better.

She probably left out the fact that Penn is still working for her, and hasn't, in fact, been fired...and I'm always guessing that no one is questioning her about this.

But at least we know where Obama traveled after college!

Another "As far as I know" from Clinton:

“So I’m not quite sure exactly where Senator Obama has been. So far as I know, he’s maybe taken two trips. But that’s fine, I mean, he can say whatever he wishes about his own experience and we’ll leave it up to voters to determine who really is ready to be commander in chief and who is ready to restore America’s standing and moral authority in the world,” Clinton said.

It sadly is news because you know it will only be a matter of time before the right wing decides he is a sleeper candidate- a manchurian candidate from Pakistan. Was he at a training camp while there? This is what we will hear. For those who are hung up on his middle name (and watch a lot of Fox news) this will be more evidence of how foreign Obama really is.
I am glad to see the campaign on top of it now. It is not going away.

Its interesting how this plays (attack-wise) with him: He's both naive for his willingness to attack al-Gaeda in Pakistan, and simultaneously working with them to overthrow America in a subversive takeover because he's a loyal Muslim, while also being a Christian who goes to a racist church.

Of course, these are all messages for people who wouldn't ever vote for Obama anyway, so I'm not too worried about them. Unlike Kerry or Gore, there's not a large segment of the population sitting on a fence, trying to decide if they like him personally or not. People either do, or they're disinclined to because of race or politics or gender.

Notice there was no mention of sniper fire during his visit.

It wasn't the content Greg, it was the fact that you gave the article the exact same vague, pseudo-menacing title that Fox News would have.

It's news BECAUSE the right wingers would try to use it as a scary muslim nugget. But that doesn't mean you have to help enable that exact meme in your reporting.

In other news, a number of reporters are staked outside of Rob Lowe's apartment right now, trying to get to the bottom of the blackmail scandal. Another number of reporters are at Starbucks, having coffee.

We will continue to keep you abreast to their activities throughout the day.

Still a NON-ISSUE, Greg. One that you sensationalized in your cherry picking and title choice... just like Fox or Drudge would do.

The question is why?

It seems you're playing gotcha with the Obama campaign and playing stenographer with Clinton campaign.

Again, the question is why?

Time to lay it on the table. At least then we can take what is said and printed with the knowledge of where it is coming from.

Who do you support in the primary and why?

Less snark, more substance:

Did this come out because of the Passport breach?

I mean, obviously he hadn't mentioned it for a reason before, no? Considering even a progressive blog like TPM couldn't resist the innuendo headline, it's clear that the Limbaugh crowd will wink wink all over it (not that that matters since they would do it over his name and color anyway), so it leaves me to wonder, where did this news come from? A passport maybe? Who after that?

user-pic

Actually it's Hillary who has thrown out the "Scary Muslim" line...so unless she's switched parties...

What is scary (for lack of a better word) is the amount of attention paid to few words that mention going to Pakistan that so many reporters (see headline at HuffPost) are focused on. In fact, the Pakistan part was not even his complete sentence--"I went to Pakistan in the 1980s and I knew the difference between Shia and Sunni..."

When I first read that part of his talk, I thought it was funny because he seemed to be making a subtle jab against those who are in government and don't know Sunni from Shi'ite (i.e. McCain) while he knew the difference as a young man and the Islamic world was not at the center of our foreign policy concerns. In other words, it seems a minor political jab and not that big a deal.

That this non-story continues reminds me of how we seem to live in an ahistorical world where the past and the present merge so that "what is true today was always so and always will be." Pakistan in 1980s was probably one of the more safer countries to visit--certainly more so than India which was facing the Tamal uprising.

I suspect that the next series of questions will concern the identity of this friend and I would not be surprised if there is not an investigation of this friend and his ties to . Moreover, going back to ahistoricity, I suspect that this will be used to raise suspicion about Obama's so-called "Muslim" identity.

Maybe I've become too overly suspicious.... I should probably lay off the blogs for a few days to detox.

Shorter Greg:

Ha ha I told you dumbasses that this was news! See, all those other guys think so too!

I, however, speaking as one of those smartasses, still don't understand why a college trip to Pakistan and India is news.

I'm not saying that it's NOT news, but it's just a fact without context or a story to give it shape and meaning.

You might not MEAN it to support the "Obama is a muslim" meme, but there are trolls on here who have already used it as such, because as a fact without importance, context, or story, it can be used this way.

I think you need an editor, Greg.

Obviously he was in Pakistan scouting bomb targets, part of his master plan as documented in his kindergarten papers outlining his future presidential campaign.

I hope they bring this up. It's so over the top, it makes them look absolutely ridiculous. As any have noted, the whispering campaign has been underway for a long time, with little success, if any.

Smears this fanciful are best left to Robert Ludlum.

People forget...in 1981 Bin Laden and the early beginnings of Al Queda were working for the CIA in Afghanistan fighting the Soviets. Back then they were the "good guys".

Greg:

A "couple of reporters asking" does, in fact, make the trip "news."

Not because it is newsworthy, important, or of any consequence, but unfortunately, it is "news" because "a couple of reporters" asked. They may have asked because they saw your posting from the other day (in that incestuous, lazy, discursive (re)reporting that passes as journalism these days).

And: Who were, exactly, these "couple of reporters?" When we move into the GE, TPM might want to be mindful of which reporters are asking the questions so that TPM doesn't simply pass on rightwing/nut-job (as opposed to "conservative"), swiftboating themes.

What is sad is that this kind of uncritical and small "reporting" (including what appears on Election Central) is that this is exactly how Iraq became the supposed "center" of terrorism for the U.S/cause of 9-11, and Obama remains a Muslim (as far as we know) for 13% of Americans.

But: What is encouraging is that in these post-Iraq invasion times there is a savvy and watchful public who doesn't simply consume what passes as "news."

P.S.: Ah words: Why "explain," Greg? "Described?" "Shared?" "Discussed?"

Why "exlain?"

Please.

Obama should detail more thoroughly, who "Sadik" was. He indicates only that first name, and says that "Sadik" had overstayed his (visa) welcome in the U.S. in 1981 (meaning, he was an "illegal." He has also not provided more detail on what happened to the three weeks, minus four days, he spent in Pakistan. He mentions four days with a man named Soomro. This is none other than Mian Muhammadian Soomro, who was a banker of much influence, even in 1981. Soomro has sons, and it is possible that Soomro was the chaparone for the Jacobabad part of the trip (four days). There have been hints that Soomro was contacted by a party, possibly in South America, to watch over young Obama.
Obama has said that two of the figures in this trip are now living in the U.S. and are donators to his campaign. Why haven't more reporters sought them out and interviewed them. It's possible Young Barack, et al, were just smoking a lot of high grade hash over there.
Folks should understand the context of Pakistan, particularly, Jacobabad, Hyderabad (India and/or Pakistan), and Karachi in those years. They should also learn more about what Obama's mother did during this period. She worked for USAID, Ford Foundation & Women's Working Bank. Google those, and google Mian Muhammadian Soomro, and you will see that there may have later been an intersection between Women's Working Bank and Soomro's bank(s).
Even more startling is the knowledge that Soomro was part of the interim government after Benasir Bhutto was assassinated, and the new regime came in after Musharraf was defeated. The PML (Q) Party, which is Soomro's party, was instrumental in the 2002 elections which brought Musharraf to power. A former Inter-Services Intelligence Agency general has admitted to spiking that election so far as manipulating PML (Q) Party's influence in voting.
Soomro apparently doesn't want to speak about all of this (Pakistani news sources HAVE asked him about the relationship, which he says, is so current that he still calls Barack Baby). And, it is interesting how Pakistanis have taken his statement that he will actually bomb Pakistan if al-Qaeda targets are found solidly, and Pakistanis fail to do the bombing themselves. All of this, and more, knowing that Soomro has been a confidant of Musharraf. He was, in fact, the INTERIM Prime Minister of the INTERIM government when Zadari (Bhutto's husband), et al, beat Musharraf.
There are also some reports on the web that Obama gave support to a radical party in Kenya, when he was there recently. The itinerary of that trip hasn't been detailed thoroughly. There is even a report that Obama made TWO trips to Pakistan (still being clarified), one of which was a "hunting trip in Pakistan."
Obama ridiculed Senator Clinton for mingling with gun guys in PA. I guess he decided he couldn't disclose HE'D been hunting in those years ... it wouldv'e mocked his own credentials. The media has done a piss poor job of just asking for specifics.
After all: ISI, the C.I.A., and Saudi and Egyptian intelligence operatives were all working together, in 1981, to funnel money and arms to the "mujahadeen" fighting the Soviets ... including the "Arab Afghans." Those are the guys we've seen morph into al-Qaeda. Bin Laden, Ayman al-Zawahiri, etc. It goes without saying that ISI, in those years, probably monitored any American coming to Pakistan who had Obama's background.
This was the period when Obama plainly suggests he was searching for his identity. That clearly included whether he saw himself as an African-American, or a dark-skinned American. Was he a Christian, an agnostic (as his mother appeared be be, albeit, with some form of spirituality which worked for her -- no problem there, I don't care if she was an atheist), but certainly, also, a Muslim? Those are critical questions to ask, because it would be important to know if the latter DID represent one aspect of the tour.
That's o.k. too. But face it: if he discloses more details, and any part of that trip (or trips) to Pakistan involved Islamists, madrassas, etc., then Obama is going to have to do more explaining. I have my own views on this, but I think Democrats and Independents leaning towards that Party, should demand that the DNC push Obama into providing more details on the trip/trips, to Pakistan, and Kenya. That way, if Obama IS the nominee, we all know what we're getting.
Why do this?
Did he REALLY sit in a church, with a racist minister, for 20 years, and NEVER HEAR him spew his anti-white racism from the pulpit? Did he have a relationship with Rev. Wright which was more than an acquaintance ship, or were they just minister/attender. It would appear to me that there are some twists and turns Obama has had to be forced into disclosing.
Finally, media should ask Obama: were you informed by the State Department, or FBI, that the people who intruded into your Passport Files were looking specifically for whether you'd ever been to Pakistan? And that his "self-innoculation" discussion on April 10, 2008, when he said he was more savvy on foreign affairs than McCain or Clinton, was a way of heading off the posse? I think we ought to know.
If we ask questions, like whether he used crack cocaine, or powder, will he take umbrage? Crack cocaine has devastated many African-American communities. The comment made by the Editor of JET, who alluded to that, was pilloried. But crack has been like the Grim Reaper in many African-American communites. Big difference between snorting the white stuff, and smoking it.
The public has a right to demand the DNC, and the media, in toto, dig deeper, and give us more info.
If it's innocuous, fine.
If not, we sure as hell ought to know before the convention & primaries are over.
