North Carolina Dem Debate Cancelled

In a blow to Hillary, this is just in from the North Carolina Democratic Party:

North Carolina Democratic Presidential Debate CANCELLED

We regret to inform you that the proposed Democratic Presidential Debate scheduled for April 27 has been cancelled due to time constraints and logistical issues associated with such a large, national event.

You have shown tremendous passion and interest in being a part of history as Democrats are poised this year to elect the first female or African-American President. However, there were also growing concerns about what another debate would do to party unity.

Both Hillary and Obama had agreed to the debate, but they'd quarreled over the date, with the Hillary campaign wanting to do it after the Pennsylvania primary, presumably so they could ride into the debate with momentum after a PA victory.

Obama leads Hillary in many North Carolina polls, and the cancellation of the debate denies her a chance to use what's been a traditional advantage for her in debate settings to put a dent in his lead there.

Does this only hurt Hillary? After Obama's poor performance in the last debate, doesn't this open him to more criticism that he can't take the heat? Doesn't this create the impression that he is simply hoping to ride out the clock and coast into the nomination? It certainly does to me.

I am sure that this is the impression that will be left with those who were already supporting her. It is not clear to me that the still-undecideds will even notice that the debate has been cancelled.

Otto F should note that the NC Dems cancelled the debate, not Obama. In fact, he agreed to it first.

Ha!

user-pic

Of course it does for you - you hate Obama and you're a Hillary acolyte. What a shock that you have that opinion.

After America saw what a joke the last debate turned into, I don't think it'll be missed.

user-pic

It certainly does to me.

Color me shocked! Shocked! That you feel this way....

So, I keep hearing from Hillary and her drones about "Obama's poor performance in the debate." What exactly was it that was poor? And do be specific.

That's the question I always have towards the debate. I thought Obama showed unbelievably immense restraint. He was trying to explain a framework when and where no one wanted it exposed.

Firsthand it's hard to hear his response and see his body language because of the reaction I had to the questions themselves, so I've had to review snippets.

If you think Obama did well in that debate, please allow me to borrow you my glasses and a set of hearing aids.

Ever since the debate, he's been playing Lorre to her Bogart. When you're slapped you'll take it and like it!

The DNC establishment can work for you or against you; in this case Hil-liar-y lost....

user-pic

But you're keeping an open mind, right? Yeah, right.

Puh-Leaze! If we have Obama to thank for no debate, then that scores points for Obama. The only "poor performance" about that last debate was the debate itself. No MORE - PUH-LEAZE!

user-pic

Uh, Greg. How about "disagreed over" or "been unable to agree on" instead of "quarrelled on". The whole race could appear to me much less stressful if bloggers and the press chose less angry word. You can do that just like the rest of us.

Oh thank God! I don't think anyone could have taken another one of those damned "debates" or whatever they end up being!

THIS IS WONDERFUL NEWS -- FOR THE VOTERS!!!!!

the cancellation of the debate denies her a chance to use what's been a traditional advantage for her in debate settings to put a dent in his lead there.

Ah well, now she will simply have to rely on the enormous propoganda success that can be achieved with her well-received line of music videos...

God, that video is just awful.

oh, Greg, why WHY?

user-pic

Greg's got some 'splaining to do....

Come on, I cannot be the only one who thought that the tortured rhyme scheme necessary to accomodate the critique of the "blogosphere" was so deliciously absurd as to deserve a wider audience, can I?

Why did you make me click on that :( Scarred for life. :)

OMG it's stuck in my head now!

I ain't clicking on link.

Value my sanity too much.

user-pic

You did the right thing. Unfortunately some of us don't share your admirable self-restraint, and we end up ruining our day.

user-pic

Hey babymama Babymama? do they have a clue what that means?

ROFLMAO.

Aw shit - they think it's the same thing as babygirl. LOLOLOLOL!!!!

Beyond lame.
And in response I say
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RyhIBXNfqMA

THIS IS EXCELLENT NEWS!! FOR HILLARY!!!

Thank fucking god!

Yay!

user-pic

Good. They've already had 21 debates and have, according to many pundits, run out of things to debate (other than flag pins, neighbors with naughty pasts, etc).

I do wish Hillary would have been asked about Mark Penn, or been forced to justify all those pardons her hubby gave out. I guess it doesn't really matter; she has already lost.

Excellent decision. Sanity is slowly coming to the party. I'm very glad they specifically noted that another debate is potentially damaging to party unity.

Ya' think?

user-pic

The cancellation of the debate also spares us from another embarassing performance by the talking suits on our TeeVees.

Thank goodness for small favors....

And Greg DeL? I was once a charter member of the Greg DeL for President club. And you repay your loyal constituents with that video???!!?

Thanks, pal. It's going to be awhile before I get that voice out of my head....

Come on, fess up, you know you laughed. ;-)

user-pic

"You'd have to be insane to vote for John McCain" was the most redeeming part of it.

But I keep hearing the refrain over and over in my brain.

Just like when someone brings up the worst songs ever written, and you can't get them out of your head?

Like "We had joy we had fun we had seasons in the sun...."

Or, Paul Anka's "You're having my baby"....

Or, "I've never been to me".

There. I feel better now.

user-pic

Dude, that song is all up in my head...damn. I've literally pulled up heavy metal videos off YouTube trying to get it out. Ugh.

It wasn't on ABC anyway, she wouldn't just get to sit there and watch Obama get waterboarded for two hours, I think she just comes to expect that now.

And yes, thank god there won't be any more debates, 21 is enough, obviously we have run out of substantive things to talk about, so we might as well end on a very very low note.

Senator Obama agreed to the debate first.

Hillary tried to change the date.

The Sniper Heroine of Tuzla still thinks that she is the Queen, and that she gets to set all the rules.

She just cut her own throat. She is out of money, and needed the free TV that the debate would have provided.

She just had to try and change the rules, like she always does. This time it bit her in her ample pantsuited Arse.

HILLARY TURDBLOSSOM CLINTON

HAS PASSED

THE FEAR MONGER IN CHIEF THRESHOLD.

I remember someone suggesting that the folks who had acquired tickets to the NC debate would be miffed if it was cancelled. I am not sure that I believe this, but in order to avoid irking such people, perhaps Sen Obama might wish to contact Sen McCain's campaign to see about arranging a debate in NC before the end of the summer, with the provision that tickets to the original Obama/Clinton matchup would be honored at the new Obama/McCain forum.

Or maybe Obama could arrange a private Springsteen concert for those who bought tickets to the debate.

Apparently, there IS a God.

This is very good news for the Democrats. McCain will of course try to counter being outspent by going negative, as in Carl Rove negative. That's the kind of negative that allowed a idiot former "Champaign Unit" National Reservist with an iffy attendance record who as President had bungled a "mission accomplished" invasion that was based on lies to defeat an intelligent, articulate, decorated Viet Nam war hero. I'm more than a little concerned about Obama's performance against two television moderators during an hour-and-a-half political debate. Yes, I know he's promising to elevate politics to a new level. But I haven't heard the GOP sign on to that concept yet

user-pic

Wasn't this debate supposed to be moderated by Katie Couric?

If so we should all be thanking whatever gods we worship for the cancellation. If anyone could do a worse job than Georgie and Charlie it is Katie.

user-pic

Yes, Couric was supposed to be the moderator. This was going to be her opportunity to demonstrate her grasp of politics, issues, and the state of the race.

OR something like that. I suspect we would have gotten another helping of "HE DOESN'T WEAR A FLAG PIN, SO CAN YOU TELL ME IF HIS NEIGHBOR LOVES AMERICA????"

user-pic

It would have been truly aweful, wouldn't it?

Yipppeee........Hillary doesn't get any FREE airtime to use her reTHUGlican talking points

GO AWAY HILLARY LOSER

I heard Obama's going to be with Bruce in NC on the 27th. Any truth?

Maybe she plans to drop out prior to April 27th...

Hah, nahh.

How can I possibly be expected to pick a candidate after seeing them debate less than two dozen times?

I am sure Obama chickened out. People are catching on to the limp wristed one. He cannot take the slightest bit of critism without whining like a little baby. That is what he has in common with his whiny supporters. Obama does not want debates, he does not want Florida and Michigan voters to count, he does not want anyone to ask him about his relationships with the likes of his 20 year pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah (”God Damn America!”) Wright, and Weather Underground terrorist and fundraiser William (”I don’t regret setting bombs!”) Ayers. Talk about chickens coming home to roost. Hate America and you are a friend of Obama.

user-pic

LOL

A clintonista complaining about whining. Too funny.

Hillary's the biggest whiner of all time, and her supporters are almost as bad.

user-pic

People are catching on to the limp wristed one.

Limp Wristed? Nice to see the supposedly feminist Hillary backers resorting to homophobic remarks in order to bash Obama.

Yeah, I was gonna point that out too. That's pretty offensive statement for a supposed progressive.

He's a total and self-acknowledged troll. Be a good idea to ignore him.

user-pic

Dude, cracking jokes and doing a brush off about your opponents cheap shots isn't whining.

I always get the first question! is whining.

user-pic

You do understand that you're whining about whining, right?

Ooooh- a metawhine.

user-pic

Wait a minute -- she's the one who wouldn't agree to (or at least tried to change) the date.

I don't get it. If anyone would benefit from a debate right now it would be her. At least a properly moderated one, and I think Couric might have been half decent.

Oh well, maybe her campaign is so far in hock to His Royally Overpaid Pennsomeness that they can't afford the air charter to NC.

See post above. The NC dems cancelled the thing, not Obama.

Does the cancellation of the N. Carolina debate really hurt only Clinton? After his poor performance in the last debate, doesn't Obama come across again as not being able to take the heat? Things have gotten tougher for Mr. Obama, and suddenly a debate gets canceled. Doesn't it also create the impression that Obama simply wants to ride out the primaries and coast into the nomination? It does to me. After flubbing the last debate, how will Obama make himself look like a fighter now? More attack ads?

You already said this...

user-pic

I"m stunned that Otto thinks something might be a problem for Obama. Stunned. No one could have anticipated that Otto would interprt an event as being a problem for Obama. No one.

Doesn't it also create the impression that Obama simply wants to ride out the primaries and coast into the nomination?
Coasting? Which campaign sat on their ass for the entire month of February?
Does the cancellation of the N. Carolina debate really hurt only Clinton?

No, there is no doubt but that the cancellation deals a blow to David Brooks as well - one less column that practically writes itself about the "grave doubts" that are emerging from "long-time democratic" big-wigs. Likewise it surely makes it harder for Tim Russert & al to fill time on Sunday mornings. I am hard pressed, however, to believe the strained scenario you paint whereby this development hurts Sen Obama's chances.

"Obama simply wants to ride out the primaries and coast into the nomination."

Otto, that's the most astute observation you've made all day. Since Obama has an insurmountable lead, why shouldn't he?

Hillary will now be deprived of her two-day-long boosts in the post-debate tracking-polls.

It's not a blow to Hillary. Hillary is not going to win. No debate is going to change the math, and it's only the support of the media and a hell of a lot of denial that she's still in the race at all. We're going to continue this charade for a couple more weeks so everyone gets to vote and it looks like everyone's being very fair to poor victimized Hillary. She can put a dent in the lead all she wants, but it's not going to change the fact that Obama is going to come out ahead and the superdelegates are not going to overturn that to give it to the establishment candidate.

*There*

Okay, I had to get that out, but we can all go back to pretending now. Boy, what's going to happen tomorrow???? I can't WAIT! This could sure be a game-changer for Hill!

Dang, if not for your husband, your avatar which brings back memories the psychological scars I bear from "the Smurf Incident" (as its come to be called) and my inherent fear of yet another restraining order, I would so be proposing to you right now.

There's a place for us, Bucky.

A collective sigh of relief in Obamaland.

user-pic

Not really, since he agreed to the debate in NC first. But who needs facts?

user-pic

Hah. It's like parents separating squabbling children.

"You two go to your rooms until you've calmed down!"

Sounds like Dem leaders have come out of their collective coma.

user-pic

If it were an actual debate I might be upset but these press conference style affairs with copious commercial interruptions should be stopped in the GE. Good grief. For that reason alone I didn't watch this last "debate" and I was well rewarded with an evening of playing with my kids out in the back yard.

Sheesh. Debate. Debate What? Who didn't get shot at by a sniper? Who didn't denounce, reject, renounce, disown, diavow (fill in your favorite outrageous numbnuts here) loud enough, or strong enough? Good grief! Its either McCain or Not McCain. I choose NOT McCain. Whoooopppeeeeeee!

Finally, relief from a stupid process that is far from 'debate.' And, I'm spared the rancorous exercise of shouting at the suits on my TV who wouldn't know an issue even it were on their MSM scripts.

Can't I just eat my waffle??????

Come to think of it, Obama did luck out. He faced the strong probability of another tough debate. If the moderators decided to turn it all on Hillary, she'd just come across again as a fighter who can handle it. If they got tough on Obama again, he'd either have to venture into the arena of street politics where he is not comfortable, or repeat his dismal performance of last time where he tried unsuccessfully to rise above it all. So I guess he did luck out.

user-pic

And so did Clinton, when you think about it. Did you know that Ed Rendell was BFFs with Farrakhan?

Ouch.

God, I really would've loved to have seen her reply. I imagine it being something like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V17duGlHEYY

"Why do I always get the first question?! Does Obama want another pillow?!"

Stop projecting Hillary's martyr complex onto Obama, imbecile.

Hey liam, those were pretty good. I can't resist "Bigfoot" for your guy, or even "Arsenio-o-o-o", while we're down here in the mud.

So Obama technically agreed to the debate, but none of the terms. What a PUSS. Guess I can't blame him.

Why should he debate her? Why even pretend that she's a legitimate candidate any more? She's done. Her version of the Dem Party is done. McCain is next.

The debate is over. Obama is the nominee. The Clinton Whack-jobs are the only ones who don't know it.

Someone tell Tracy Flick that it's over.

So Obama is spending like a drunk sailor, blasting negative ads all across PA because he's the nominee. That would make him an idiot not worthy of supporting. No? Sorry! Just trying to follow your logic.

Clinton is spending like a drunk sailor too. She's just borrowing it all, because she doesn't have any actual support.

KA-CHOW!

(sorry -both my kids are under 6 ;-)

His 'spending like a drunk sailor' is tapping Hillary dry.

He, on the other hand, has a healthy bank account balance.

It's BRILLIANT. Spend a ton of cash, to make her drain her resources to keep up.

SO if Obama is the nominee, why is he spending unprecedented cash attacking Hillary is all I'm asking. You need to start telling him to save it on McCain, or start using it on McCain instead of saying he's better than Bush. Hopefully if he is the nominee he won't be spending millions to still attack Hillary.

He's trying to get it through her thick helmet of hair that it's over. He's tried to be nice about it, but now he just has to clobber her over the head with the millions of dollars he receives in small donations from his millions of supporters every month.

He's spending it because he's got it. And when he's facing McCain, he'll bring in twice as much.

Because he is smart enough to wage this campaign first, unlike Queen Hillary who just assumed that Super Tuesday was going to be her Coronation day. How did that work out for her.

You are aware that primary money and general election money are two different things, right?

To say nothing of the fact that with his huge cash advantages, he's able to pour a ton of money in PA, which forces Hillary to respond, thus emptying her dwindling war chest.

If the net effect of Obama’s spending is to bankrupt Hillary. That’s a success.

In other words, Obama does not want to have another complete meltdown in front of 11 million voters.

We'll see how "complete" your meltdown is when he's the nominee.

Looking forward to that.

Speaking of Drunken Sailors: Hillary is the one who was tosssing down shots and beers. There is the perfect Feminist role model for all your young daughters to pattern their behavior after; right!

"Just a good ol' boy,
Never meanin' no harm.
Beats all you never saw,
Been in trouble with the law,
Since the day she was born!"

Actually did anyone get her taking that shot on film? Did she cough afterwards and get the watery eyes?

C'mon, its not like she was knocking back some green label house brand rotgut. It was Crown Royal. No one coughs after a shot of Crown Royal.

user-pic

She also just sipped it.

Whoa buddy, Hillary didn't just start drinking. Her and McCain are a coupla pros!. Check this out:

http://www.rawstory.com/news/2006/NYT_Senators_Clinton_McCain_held_vodkadrinking_0728.html

However, there were also growing concerns about what another debate would do to party unity.

What party unity? What are they talking about? It sounds more like a ruse to allow Obama to pass on another stumbling debate performance that would dispirit his drooling fanboys.

He's run a smarter campaign than her across the board.

No, it's more like the NC Dems are smart enough to realize that there's really no good reason to give the Republicans any more free ammunition at this point. Honestly, does it really serve us to have our candidates attacking each other in easily extractable sound bytes this close to the general? Nah. It would be different if the debate were actually going to lead to substantive discussion which would reveal major distinctions between the two candidates. It would be different if the debate were actually going to help a large section of the voting public make a decision. It would be very different if the debate were going to have any impact on the outcome of this race, but that's just not the case.

We're at the point where there is less and less to be gained, and quite a lot to be lost, from having our candidates going for each other full-on in a major broadcast event. The nature of the questions is likely to get stupider - or at least no more interesting - and the potential for any one answer to get spun into a negative is high. Better to save it for the eventual nominee's debates with McCain, rather than giving the Repubs any more fodder right now. They're not debating any more; why should we?

Can't I just drink your milk shake?

What a great image -- closed door meeting between Obama and Clinton with Obama delivering Daniel Day Lewis' lines and Clinton the preacher's lines. Beautiful!

user-pic

Good!

We don't need another debate - there have been over 20 already.

And if they are going to run them like ABC did - who needs that shit.

Smart, Obama, very smart.

I believe by not having this debate in north carolina will help hillary clinton..... she will use it to her advantage....:)

Care to elaborate, please.

We'll know tomorrow if Pennsylvanians are wanna-bee entitlelees waiting for the political mother's milk of Momma Hillary or if they identify themsleves as part of the Mutt Pedigree of America and identify with the movement attaching themselves to Obama.

I, for one, think the world can do without a "debate" moderated by little Katie Couric.

Hasn't enough damage been done to democracy this primary season?

She'll say Obama is scared to debate her, he'll say we've debated 20 times and judging by the last debate we've run out of relevant questions.

I personally think he should have debated again, but understand that in politics the front-runner is only hurt by debates, even more so in this case where Obama can't go in for the kill (since he'll need Clinton supporters in the GE) whereas Clinton will gladly "go there".

I live in Wisconsin. In the week or so leading up to our primary, Hillary was all over TV hitting Obama on not agreeing to debate her in Wisconsin. And we all know how that turned out.

The general public doesn't give a shit about another debate.

user-pic

The general public is just like this general public who's typing this - we all want this over with.

Exactly. To be still undecided by this point you have to be thoroughly detached from the day-to-day news of the campaign, and folks who are that disinterested will hardly be likely to care (or even know) that there ever was a debate scheduled in the first place.

He'll debate again. It will be against John McCain and they'll hopefully be discussing something more substantive than a list of Chicagoans that Obama knows tangentially.

I think the pathetic excuse for a debate last week makes the absence of another debate more understandable. Can anyone really blame him for not wanting to sit around for 2 hours of "Senator Obama, just how crazy and black is your crazy black preacher?"

Obama should just say to Hillary, "Debate dese nutz."

No NC Dem Debate

The North Carolina Democratic Party released a statement today nixing a tentatively-planned CBS-sponsored Dem debate. Statement from the party after the jump. Hillary Clinton's campaign was none too pleased, issuing a renewed call for a Tar Heel State debate:

North Carolina State Director Ace Smith issued the following statement:

“It is unfortunate that Senator Obama has chosen to brush off the people of North Carolina by flatly refusing to debate. But we are willing to move forward with another time and location for the debate so that he has no excuse for not participating. Unfortunately, it is becoming clear that Senator Obama simply does not believe that North Carolinians deserve the opportunity to hear directly from the candidates about how they will fix our economy, bring our troops home and provide quality health care for every American. Hillary Clinton is committed to debating the issues facing the Tar Heel State. We hope Sen. Obama will make the same commitment."

Sounds like a whiney douchebag. (And I wonder who he's declared for?)

user-pic

“Obama simply does not believe that North Carolinians deserve the opportunity to hear directly from the candidates ...” I am sorry to hear that NC. I didn’t realize that North Carolina does not yet have TV or Internet. The two Democratic candidates really should take stage coaches down there and give the North Carolinians a chance to hear them debate.

Can't I just eat my waffle.....what a punk ass.

You would know.

Obama came off so badly in the last debate that he's scared to debate again. LOL...

CHICKENS coming home to roost indeed!

LOL LOL LOL

Rae

Yeah, obama's a big, giant sissy man.

He needs a pillow under his ass to debate.

He didn't get one last time. He finally had to answer some tough questions.

He's not used to that! }} Wahhhhh

"They were hard on me... wahhhh!"

Wahhhhhh sob sob sob.....

LOL LOL LOL

No Otto, it doesn't hurt Obama in NC. There have been numerous debates before and he will not say anything different in NC that I haven't already heard in prior debates. Plus after the last hatchet job by ABC, I like the decision to cancel. Obama will win in NC where he is ahead and where he also has been endorsed by the two top Democratic candidates for governor. We already know enough to choose our guy and know enough to reject his opponent.

Thank you Lord!

(since he'll need Clinton supporters in the GE)

LOL! That ship has sailed, Jonze. You guys dug your own grave. Go ahead. Lie down in it...after your August party that is.

You've got it backwards. I live in NC, and it was all over the papers down here that Obama had agreed to a debate for April 19 - all the terms had been set by the NC Dems and CBS, and Obama said "yes." It was Clinton who never did accept the debate as proposed. After she shot down the original plan, she came back with the April 27 date, and then accused Obama of not wanting to debate her in NC. But anyone who had been following the story knew that this was not the case; a debate had been set and had to be canceled because Clinton chickened out.

Obama agreed to all the original terms of the debate. Clinton didn't. She then proposed something different and has been trying ever since to raise a big stink about Obama not wanting to go along with her plans.
