New Obama Mailer In Pennsylvania Hits Hillary For Taking Money From Lobbyists And PACs

Obama drops a new mailer in Pennsylvania that was forwarded our way.

It displays Obama talking to a crowd of hard hats, portrays him as the real foe of special interests that are hurting ordinary Americans, and hits Hillary for taking big bucks from Washington lobbyists and PACs. Click on the images below to enlarge...

This is something of a closing message for Obama as the two duke it out over the economically struggling voters that have been the subject of so much discussion of late in the context of Obama's "small town" comments. It speaks to these voters by mocking Hillary's defense of lobbyists as follows:

"She says they represent `real people.' Do they represent you?"

Powerful, on-message, and demonstrates a deftness and (relatively) light-touch that continues to escape the crashing-burning Clinton campaign.

Uh, yeah. Obama raised a hundred mill.
And all from the little people sending
their nickels and quarters.
Sure.

Sorry, B.O. PA hicks dumb enough to
buy what you're selling.

Obama has raised about $19 million from "bundlers," or big-money donors. The average contribution is about $100. Those numbers are on record with the FEC.

Please learn the facts before chiming in with your bullshit.

Not only that, but what little money he did initially raise from "bundled" contributions was very early in the campaign. As soon as he realized that it was possible to run his campaign without those contributions, that is exactly what he did, and has done, ever since.

great pic! I love seeing Obama out and about, having fun.

FEC filings are always open and available for inspection.

50% of his donations are in amounts of less than $200.

and actually - he OUTRAISED clinton in small donors from Pennsylvania small towns.

How funny is THAT?

You sound bitter, Bonehead. Lol.

Dear Bonehead;
If both sides of the primary's candidate get as informed as possible, we can pave the way for a general election victory for either Hillary or Obama.

While Obama certainly has a core of super donors because the odds just dictate that a certain percentage of his supporters will be wealthy, he is currently closing in on 1.5 million donees.
The math on this is pretty simple. At a $100 a pop that equals $150M. He is on track to be the first candidate in modern history to have more than half his financial support come from such a vast array of small donors. I think this is Dean's greatest achievement. He opened the door to show the possibilities like never before by employing the internet.

Had Hillary been prepared for this thing to go the distance back in 2007 she would have started tapping the internet as well. Unfortunately for her and her supporters she realized what was happening a little too late.

But should Obama win the nomination-assuming that you are a progressive- you can take comfort in his fund raising prowess. He will need every bit of it to take on McCain, Fox News and the Swift Boaters.

Remember Bro-the US Supreme Court is on the line. We do not want Scalia to speak for the majority!

Here is where Hillary really stepped in it, and shows that she has no idea about how regular people will react.

You all know of the school bully who picks out some perceived minor tic about an other kid, and pounds it to death. The Bully is the only one doing the taunting, and actually believes that all the regular kids are supporting his barrage of infantile meanness toward the other kid. The bully thinks that the more he keeps up his moronic taunting the more of the other kids he is converting to his bullying creed.

We all know that it is actually the opposite that happens. All the normal kids just cringe inside, and end up wanting to be no where near the Bully.

That is where Hillary, the taunting playground bully, has now landed. She is making normal people cringe inside at her childish taunting.

Hillary the bully, is driving up her own negatives.

Hillary has passed The Bully In Chief Threshold.

Excellent analysis, Liam. I'm circulating it to my friends. I wish every Pennsylvanian could see that down-to-earth, yet profound, thought-piece.

I agree, it's a very effective ad. His video is great too!

correction AREN'T dumb enough.
My favorite Obama story is how people in his district found out their drinking water was radio active. It was coming from the local nuclear power plant.
Our hero wrote a bill to force the power plant to warn the district when there were leaks.
The bill didn't pass.
The nuclear industry donated oaver 200k to Obama's state senate campaign.
When Obama went through Iowa he told voters that the bill passed.
He's a straight shooter, and avoids big money.
Just ask Tony.

Your handle is quite apt.

The bill did pass, though it was highly watered down by the time Obama could get it through. Still, Hillary Clinton herself congratulated him on his achievement in that he got it through at all. So you're beating an old dead horse here. go to the Washington Post and check it out. Obama got no pinnochios for this one.

dead horse beating seems to be the "in" thing to do at camp hillary.

Where did the hammer and sickle dude go? was his shift 6pm to 6am and now the bowler bonehead is left in his stead?

oh wait - I see marginal player.

so how much is it per troll entry that you get paid?

1.3 million donors averaging $96
The push is on to meet the DC War Party Elites' latest McBush-Clinton smears

Washington has failed you again. So, ordinary Joes and Janes are taking charge of campaign finance. Obama's not going to take the Federal Dole in the General

Off topic, I'm sorry, but I've been waiting for this and I'm so glad to see the Right Wing isn't going to let me down - from the front page:

GEN. ELEX/COMEDY PREVIEW According to the right-wing Human Events online: Barack Obama's "complicity with rappers dates back to at least 2006."

O noes! Alll the way back to '06? LOLOLOLOL!!!!! Dude, where have you been?

They are bitching about JayZ. I have my problems with Jigga - but it's not about the same shit. I think he was out of line with Nas. But since they made up and Nas was recording for JayZ's label, I guess I don't need to carry the beef forward.

Ever since 2006!!! LOLOLOLOL!!! Please, Republicans, make this a campaign issue. Please. I really want you to.

You laugh now, but Bill will be casually mentioning after an event it in an impromptu, off the cuff, totally unplanned comment to his press contingent before you know it.

you know, rappers voted for Jesse Jackson too...

cornered that rundmc vote.

Again with the tag thing. I'm sorry.

PACs and lobbyists aided Obama's rise
Data contrast with his theme:

http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2007/08/09/pacs_and_lobbyists_aided_obamas_rise/

Sen. Obama Has Ties to Lobbyists in His Presidential Bid
Public Citizen: 10 of Sen. Obama's bundlers have been federal lobbyists. The Public Citizen report listed the following ten bundlers for Sen. Obama who have registered as federal lobbyists: Frank Clark, Commonwealth Edison; Scott Harris, Harris Wiltshire and Grannis; Allan J. Katz, Akerman Senterfitt; Robert S. Litt, Arnold & Porter; Thomas J. Perrelli, Jenner and Block; Thomas A. Reed, Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Preston Gates Ellis LLP; Paul N. Roth, Schulte Roth & Zabel; Miriam Sapiro, Summit Strategies; Alan Solomont, Solomont Bailis Ventures; and Tom E. Wheeler, Core Capital Partners. [Public Citizen, 1/29/08]
Sen. Obama takes money from employees of firms that lobby and has lobbyists as advisers. "But those who lobby for a living say it's not that simple, and even Obama's stance shows some flexibility. He won't take money from federal lobbyists but accepts money from employees of firms and corporations that lobby, and he uses lobbyists and other government relations professionals as advisers... Obama has also used major fundraisers who are registered lobbyists on the state level. And he uses registered federal lobbyists such as Broderick Johnson, who lobbies for AT&T and Shell Oil, among others, as a campaign adviser. Because Johnson isn't giving money to Obama, his name won't show up in Federal Election Commission records." [Chicago Tribune, 2/10/08]
Bloomberg: Five of [Obama’s] ten biggest sources of funds are groups of employees at law firms that lobby in Washington. "While Obama doesn't accept money from registered federal lobbyists, five of his 10 biggest sources of funds are groups of employees at law firms that lobby in Washington…Among Obama's top donors were employees of the Chicago-based law firm of Sidley Austin LLP, who gave $105,750 in the first quarter. The firm was paid $4.5 million last year" for lobbying the federal government. [Bloomberg, 6/7/07]
Obama's presidential campaign has received $2,812,336 from firms that employ registered federal lobbyists. [fec.gov]

Obama has taken $405,747 from the Pharmaceutical industry. [opensecrets.org]

Obama has received $1,185,937 from the Commercial Banking industry. [opensecrets.org]

Obama has received over six million dollars from the Securities & Investment industry. [opensecrets.org]

Obama has taken $608,822 from the Insurance industry. [opensecrets.org]

Obama has taken $168,584 from the Mortgage Banking industry. [opensecrets.org]

Another dumb move.

How much has Hillary taken?

Seriously, the argument that somehow Obama is more corrupt than the CLINTONS is laughable.

What are you trying to prove, gotalife? That Obama isn't as bad as Clinton?

I already knew that!

You're so hysterical about this, your post is incoherent. You've jumbled all kinds of contributions together as if they are all one and the same kind of thing and all (tisk tisk) tainted. It just ain't so.

user-pic

gotalife, incoherent? Dios mio!

user-pic

I said this before and I'll say it again, when I donate money to a candidate it is recorded as an employee of a Telecommunications company; but I'm just a regular old cubicle guy who in no way votes or donates based on his employers interests.

He doesn't take donations for a Telecom PAC but you'll still fault him for taking my $50 donation? Absolutely ridiculous, like most of your posts!

off with his head!

question: how much did he make in the cattle futures market?

GotaBrain yet?

They chose a nice picture of Clinton. Much kinder than I would have been (or Team Clinton, for that matter).

GOTALIFE: The Hillary Spambot 9000 model, now available in the very popular Tuzla camouflage pantsuit colors.

OMG - I'm stunned. My comment went up right away and I didn't have to log in three times. Please don't tease me, TPM. Don't make me believe you're finally getting your site to work properly. It's so much easier when I keep my expectations for it in the cellar.

THIS IS EXCELLENT NEWS!! FOR HILLARY!!!

Harry Reid is bitter about the campaign going on so long.

Truely.

And Obama is supposedly up in Indiana.

Or so Politico tells me.

user-pic

You know, guys, I've been thinking. I'll pay someone to go somewhere Clinton is and ask her if she still remembers the cookie recipe she was forced to release after the Republicans raised such a furor over her remark: "I'm not just a little woman who stays home and bakes cookies for her husband."

Cause I don't know about y'all, but that statement sounds a tad Elitist to me.

Tena,

She looked down her nose at Tammy Wynette. That sure sounds elitist to me. Here is what she said. Of course like her Tuzla Fairy Tales, she lied about this also. She stood by her man, through all the blue stained years.

Hillary Clinton let it be known that she wasn't going to stay home and bake cookies like some little woman who'd "stand by her man like Tammy Wynette."

The sad thing is, I liked that Hillary. Whatever happened to her?

Obama has taken $608,822 from the Insurance industry. [opensecrets.org]

Here's the thing. Those numbers are for PEOPLE EMPLOYED BY THE INSURANCE INDUSTRY, not lobbyists or PACS. I work for a major health insurance company and I've given about $500 to Obama. My $500 is included in that figure. If someone who works at a Citgo station gives Obama $5 or $50 or $500, that's included in the "money from the oil industry" number.

I am an individual who gives to Obama as an individual, not on behalf of my employer. So, so totally not the same as taking money from "the industry."

No, stefanie -- people who work for insurance companies, banks, pharma, tobacco and most especially oil companies have to check their right to participate in the political process at the door. They should not be allowed to give candidates money -- and the candidates certainly should not accept their money. They're lucky we allow them to keep their right to vote.

That's not far from the truth when it comes to my industry. I'm not allowed to show any public favoritism or contribute to Obama in any way. I live in a caucus state and wasn't allowed to caucus because it's public.

That's pretty shocking, frankly. People shouldn't be forced to abstain from voting or caucusing because of their profession. I know some people in the media do it (like Brian Williams), but I find it silly. I don't want the media, or anyone else, to abstain from voting -- I want them to act professionally when they are working.

Caucuses aren't Constitutionally protected, which was the rationale corporate used to prevent us from participating. I wasn't told I'd be fired, but I was told I could no longer hold my position and would be transferred to another department if I caucused.

How would they have possibly known if you'd caucused?

Ummm, this is snark, right? Sorry, I'm kinda new here. :)

That was meant for evie's first comment...man, this branching is really weird.

Stop with your "facts" and "explanations" and "records" like "tapes" and "videos"!

You can't PROVE that Obama is not evil! You can't PROVE that Obama didn't take money from Al-Quaeda. You can't PROVE that there weren't any snipers in BOSNIA - they were just CAMOUFLAGED, and far away, that's why they are called SNIPERS, YO!

I think we have reached the Land of Instant Postings!!!

I have nothing to ad, except that this ridiculously long campaign in PA will be over in less than a week! Huzzah!

Obama draws fine line between lobbyist, lawyer donors

WASHINGTON - Last fall, Barack Obama quietly slipped into the Miami headquarters of a major law firm scarred by the scandals of Jack Abramoff, its once-powerful Washington lobbyist who now sits in jail.

Arriving a little after 10 a.m. on Oct. 1, Obama spent the next three hours schmoozing, speaking in a video conference to branch offices and raising money at Greenberg Traurig, a billion-dollar firm with one of the biggest lobby shops here.

Obama has now raised about $125,000 from Greenberg Traurig employees -- nearly half of it at the time of the event -- more than from any of the other top law and lobby firms.

Symbolically, it was a starkly contradictory event: an appearance by the candidate who crusades most adamantly against lobbyists at the onetime firm of the poster child for out-of-control influence peddling.

Public anger over the Abramoff lobbying scandal led Obama to institute the ban on lobbyist money in the first place, an aide said last year.

Realistically, it shows the fine line Obama draws when he says he does not accept money from lobbyists and political action committees, while raising a stunning $200-plus million overall.

Taking funds from lawyers but not lobbyists -- the distinction Obama draws -- is "hair splitting," according to League of Women Voters president Mary Wilson.

"It has huge symbolic value to take the no-PAC pledge and reject lobbying money, particularly for a campaign that presents itself as populist," said Sheila Krumholz of the Center for Responsive Politics.

But she added, "When you dig deeper, the interests that finance the Obama campaign are much the same as the others."

wow, tag-teaming with gotalife.

Go gotalife/Marginal Player go!

wow, the guy speaks somewhere and the people donate to him! he must be evil or something.

maybe he's a likable guy?

Right. Lawyer. Lobbyist. Same difference. So next time you're sued, or arrested, or need to have a will written or a title searched, by all means hire a lobbyist to do it for you. Especially if you're facing prison time.

Thank you. Made me laugh and made my day.

user-pic

Yawn... the LWV is staunchly in HRC's corner. anything they say about the campaign must be taken with a large grain of salt.

I like the mailer, and I especially like the use of Clinton's quote about lobbyists being people too. It's enough to make me want to cling to my gun and pray.

When asked about the long campaign:

Reid didn't miss a beat.

"It makes me bitter," he deadpanned.

Harry didn't get one of those "We're not bitter" stickers, obviously.

He also thinks that it's going to be over "very soon".

Yah, what was up with that "very soon" remark? Is it going to be over on May 7th? Here's hoping that it is....but Reid hasn't been able to end the war, doubtful he can end the nomination process either. We'll see.

That was pretty amusing.

Source article is here, if people are wondering:

http://www.politico.com/blogs/thecrypt/0408/Harry_Reid_has_a_sense_of_humor.html#comments

It's hard to accept, I know, but lawyers are people too, Marginal. I never heard Obama say he only accepted money from schoolteachers and nurses....And thanks for the extended quote from the League of Women Voters. Edifying, truly.

And nice new avatar, you have joined the hallowed ranks of gotalife and weaver.

I still have the Barbara Bush-Hillary Clinton dueling cookie recipes -- neither laid a glove on Original Toll House. I collect "meta" recipes, and now I'll have to print out the Cindy McCain collection that became notorious today. I remember so well Hillary's elitist cookie-tea-and-Tammy Wynette comments of '92. Couldn't believe back then she'd come out of years in AK with such a tin ear.

As an English instructor, I sincerely appreciate that the mailer cites all its sources--and that all of them are significant sources, as opposed to internet smear cites. Way to go, O!

And no, evie, all US citizens are allowed to donate to candidates. They just have to donate as the citizens they are, not as official representatives of their company. Why in the world would getting a job at a tobacco company mean that you're no longer allowed to participate in the national election process?

user-pic

I'm fairly certain that evie was being satirical…

user-pic
Hillary Clinton let it be known that she wasn't going to stay home and bake cookies like some little woman who'd "stand by her man like Tammy Wynette."

The Republicans howled about that like a pack of hyenas for months.

See, this is how she gets to be so completely void of morals in my eyes now. She is doing the same thing to Obama that the Republicans did to her for years. I don't get that.

I honestly don't - it would seem to me that once you've been through something like that, you wouldn't want to do it to someone else.

But what do I know? I would have thought anyone who had been tortured, or even more importantly - had heard the screams of his comrades as they were tortured - would never turn around and vote to do the same thing to other prisoners.

The two aren't equivalent, but I still think it's indicative of the same disease - no goddamn morals.

Yep. Willary Stark.

user-pic
"It makes me bitter," he deadpanned.

Harry didn't get one of those "We're not bitter" stickers, obviously.

He also thinks that it's going to be over "very soon".

O thank for that, CTVoter. I needed that.

user-pic
. I remember so well Hillary's elitist cookie-tea-and-Tammy Wynette comments of '92. Couldn't believe back then she'd come out of years in AK with such a tin ear.

Well, she's not the only one - I can't believe I've watched Bill totally lose it in public, twice now.

It's pathetic.

More info, please.

Can I just add that I also like that it uses such a flattering picture of Hillary?

user-pic

News for you. His events in San Francisco were bundled events. How naive can you be?

Less than half of his contributions come from small donors of under $200 per contribution.

You are falling for falsehoods from the Obama campaign.

Link? Proof? Source? I prefer to go by FEC numbers, if it's all the same to you.

And only 23% of Clinton's donors contributed $200 or less.

Link: http://www.opensecrets.org/pres08/donordems.asp?filter=A&sortby=S

(According to this site, Obama's percentage is 40%.)

On the front page Josh quotes somebody clutching her or his hankie in anticipation of an Obama third strike after Rev. Wright and "bitter," that Clinton or McCain will deploy, and it will be all over. Curious, that. I would say that Obama is the least damaged candidate out there right now. By far. Maybe this is about him being out there while being the least white.

Come on.

No one has done more for Pennsylvanians than Barack Obama.

Of course, he was insulting the voters in front of these donors.

Obama not only thinks you are bitter but also thinks you are stupid.

He is insulting your intelligence but he may have a point there.

Geez.

Straw man.

Hillary's Top Gun in Pennsylvania, Governor Ed. Rendell said this about White Pennsylvania voters, on February 12, 2008, in an on the record interview.

Why did Hillary not chastise her Top Gun for talking about White people, in such 'an elitist way". Hypocrite, thy name is HilAnny Oakley Clinton.

Here is what Rendell said about White voters in his state;

Tuesday, February 12, 2008
By Tony Norman, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Gov. Ed "Don't Call Me 'Fast Eddie' " Rendell met with the editorial board of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette last week to talk about his latest budget. But before turning the meeting over to his number-crunchers, our voluble governor weighed in on the primary fight between Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama and what the Illinois senator could expect from the good people of Pennsylvania at the polls:

"You've got conservative whites here, and I think there are some whites who are probably not ready to vote for an African-American candidate," he said bluntly. Our eyes only met briefly, perhaps because the governor wanted to spare the only black guy in the room from feeling self-conscious for backing an obvious loser. "I believe, looking at the returns in my election, that had Lynn Swann [2006 Republican gubernatorial candidate] been the identical candidate that he was --well-spoken [note: Mr. Rendell did not call the brother "articulate"], charismatic, good-looking -- but white instead of black, instead of winning by 22 points, I would have won by 17 or so."

I know I have a habit of sometimes zoning out in these meetings, but it sounded to me like Mr. Rendell had unilaterally declared Pennsylvania to be Alabama circa 1963. Was he suggesting that Pennsylvanians are uniquely racist in ways that folks in the states Mr. Obama has won so far aren't? By the way, Mr. Obama won Alabama on Super Tuesday, thank you very much!

During the CA primary, I did not receive a single mass mail piece in the Presidential primary. Use of mass mailings has decreased dramatically in state and local races too.

They were extremely effective in Barabara Boxer's first house race, 1982.

"New Obama Mailer In Pennsylvania Hits Hillary For Taking Money From Lobbyists And PACs"

This is yet another example of how Hillary Clinton keeps attacking Barack Obama. Shame on Hillary.

I find it interesting that whenever a Clinton supporter or news program delineates individual donors who have contributed to the Barack Obama campaign as members of the oil industry or a law firm, they never juxtapose these with the Clinton campaign's contributions in a similar vein. I would be very interested to find out how many times Hillary or John McCain met with lobbyists from the banking industry before selling out the American middle class by voting for the bankruptcy bill. Are senatorial appointment books fair game? The hours spent in conference with a lobbyist are probably more damning than the money they receive (that's assuming they agreed with them, which can only be discerned by how they voted).

user-pic

I like the flattering picture, myself. Some of the ones that have been around lately seem to have been picked for their unflattering portrayals and I hate that. There's no reason for it.

The picture on Carl Bernstein's article about Hillary, which is a blistering indictment of what kind of campaign she has run and what kind of president she'd be, is an absolutely stunning picture of her. One of the best I've seen. Makes the article hit that much harder, really.

I find it worrying that Obama hasn't been able to put the primaries away. The fact that Hillary is likely to win in the states around Ohio rings alarm bells for a general election. Now I don't know what exactly is going on, but I suspect Hillary is getting most of the low information voters. Some of this I suspect is a racial bias, and some of it is just the power of the Clinton brand within the Democratic party. These low information voters, however, are the true wild cards in any general election and if Obama can't attract them then it will be a challenge to win in the general election against McCain.

I think Obama is suprisingly good but he needs to control his own image better. The media and Hillary are ganging up to label him elitist. I think Obama should show a flash of anger about that. One of the reasons why the "elitist" moniker sticks is that he is so damn pleasant, controlled and affable all the time. When you're being attacked like this, people expect you to show a little reaction. Just letting it roll of his back, like he has so far, is not how your typical guy would react. He needs his own "politician shows a little emotion" news story like Clinton had before New Hampshire. That was the news cycle where Clinton found a way to connect emotionally with a bunch of women. Well Obama needs to make that sort of emotional connection as well.

I thought his humorous pokes at Hillary--like Annie Oakley--were quite good and quite devastating. Much better than Hillary's "celestial choir".

He is doing fine. I do not want him to turn into a complete phony like Hillary is. Let Obama be Obama. People can see through great pretenders like Mitt and Hillary. Most people prefer some one who is not putting on an act. It always catches up with them. How can the Gun Shooting, Booze Swilling, Sniper Ducking, Duck Shooting, personality square with the teary eyed, it is so hard, vulnerable, I found my voice Hillary. They do not square, and people know that it is all an act.

It's too late. Pennsylvanians know he's a phony. Too much Glitz, this last swamping of people's mailboxes will be filed vertically with the rest of the junkmail.

If that's true, then why is Hillary's lead shrinking?

She's a bigger phony than he is?

I thought it was great and funny.

If I had a gun I'd be praying over it right now while shooting at an immigrant.
:-)

This pretty much sums up why Obama will be the next President.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTavf76cPC0

I thought I just heard and blood vessel pop in Hillary's head, and I'm in NY.

Anyone else here it?

LOL!

I'm so glad he's not going let the last week be ruled by her.

I just wish he do a commercial on "honesty" and mention NAFTA, Snipers, Ireland and Penn/Columbia all in one ad, but in his jesting sort of tone like with the Annie Oakley comment.

How long do you think before HRC's out screaming "Dirty tricks! Dirty tricks!" or "Obama said he wouldn't go negative, shame on him! or "Look Look! He's just like me!"?

5, 4, 3, 2, 1....
