NC GOP Using Obama And Wright Against Local Dems

The North Carolina Republican Party is attempting to find out whether tying a down-ticket Democrat to Barack Obama can inflict serious damage, with this new ad against both of the Dem candidates for governor that plays the infamous "God damn America" footage of Jeremiah Wright:

Both candidates in the hard-fought Democratic primary have endorsed Obama. Will the message that Obama is too extreme, on the basis of his membership in Wright's church, be enough to damage the eventual gubernatorial nominee?

Meanwhile, the national GOP is asking the state party to not run the ad, calling it "not appropriate" and "unhelpful."

OMG, thank goodness I live on the west coast!

user-pic

Let them run it. I want the Republicans to run it into the ground.

I don't want to see panicking Democrats - this is too damn convenient for words - plays right into Hillary's electability argument, yo? And she's been giving Scaiffe lap dances lately - draw your own conclusions.

As far as I'm concerned, let's get this out there, let them pound on it and let's put it down once and for all.

Amazing how Democrats have to devour each other these days. Plays right into the Republican play book. Look, I have been in the South and have listened to the most despicable racial slurs in nice white uptown churches. I have heard the N expletive time and time again in sermons. And how intermarriage will ruin the "white race". Let anyone in the South start this sort of stuff and we can all drum up old footage of white cops turning dog loose on black people. Remember the Selma march over that bridge with the water hoses going. All that with the support of white churches. And I personally know three southern members of Congress who used to sit in those totally segregated churches, all now fine Republicans since they blame Democrats for integration. All this crap is still racism and the fact that they are throwing it at Obama should be no surprise, coming from these life-long racists.

user-pic

The ad is all over the internet, so nationally it's already done it's damage.

Anyway, to hell with these sleazebags. They're going to be routed in november.

user-pic

Well, let's give McCain some credit. Can you even imagine Bush denouncing this ad?

Don't fall for the good-cop, bad-cop routine.

user-pic

Exactly. This is a win-win situation for McCain.

He gets to play good cop by denouncing the ad, while the NC GOP, the bad cop, just keeps airing it.

user-pic

McCain hasn't denounced it - the national GOP has. But again, don't fall for it. The left hand knew what the right hand was doing.

user-pic

CORRECTION: McCain's statement is here -

Dear Chairman Daves,

From the beginning of this election, I have been committed to running a respectful campaign based upon an honest debate about the great issues confronting America today. I expect all state parties to do so as well. The television advertisement you are planning to air degrades our civics and distracts us from the very real differences we have with the Democrats. In the strongest terms, I implore you to not run this advertisement.

This ad does not live up to the very high standards we should hold ourselves to in this campaign. We need to run a campaign that is worthy of the people we seek to serve. There is no doubt that we will draw sharp contrasts with the Democrats on fundamental issues critical to the future course of our country. But we need not engage in political tactics that only seek to divide the American people.

Once again, it is imperative that you withdraw this offensive advertisement.

John McCain

user-pic

I'd say - wow!
But I just keep coming back to '04, and all the "I had no idea they were going to make that claim; I had nothing to do with that ad;" we got out of the Bush Campaign.

Never ever ever believe Republicans because these days, and these Republicans do not ever tell the damn truth about anything.

You can tell what they are really doing, 9 times out of 10, because out of nowhere they will suddenly accuse the Democrats of doing it.

user-pic

Seems to me that if David Plouffe pays attention to anything he ought to pay attention to just how Bill Clinton and Hillary slid out from under Gennifer Flowers during Bill's first campaign.

I will repeat myself:

The North Carolina GOP is a joke. Everyone knows that, even local conservatives.

The Dems expanded their statehouse majority with the House speaker under indictment (for pretty serious corruption, of which he was guilty) and on the front page of the paper every morning. This despite his refusal to step down, or even to abstain from running for re-election. Presidential year, too. Perfect storm for the state GOP and they lost seats. They have NO IDEA what they're doing.

Agreed. But they're a a very unfunny, offensive, ugly, mean-spirited joke. They are, in short, as Jesse Helms and Carter Wrenn made them.

Linda Daves at the end of the ad is much scarier than Wright.

user-pic

She scared the shit out of me!

She looks like the psychic midget in Poltergeist, gone bad.

Additionally, our primary electorate is highly educated and comprised of many African Americans. The ad will boomerang, if it has any effect at all.

Jeremiah Wright hurt Obama with many Democrats. It wasn't the kind of issue that Democrats wanted to make a big deal about, and the controversy APPEARED to be quieted by Obama's speech. But that was of course an illusion. The Republicans are going to use it extensively and to good advantage. While Obama supporters will be indignant over it, it won't matter. It is a powerful issue, and Obama can't escape it.

user-pic

Jeremiah Wright hurt Obama with many white supremacists.

let's just get real.

user-pic

Ignore Otto F, Tena. He's not worth your time or your effort.

user-pic

Oooh, the big bad black man said something mean - mommy, he's scary!!!

I mean, please - how ridiculous can people be? Listening to a 20-second sound clip and making presumptions about the morality of the man is so utterly wrong. Although, given Americans' attention spans, I guess that's all they can handle at one time. Sometimes this country really, really depresses me. We are not the most enlightened people on this earth, that's for sure.

That and Obama played the race card after "wrightgate".

Real Dems that did not drink the kool aid see it because it is very obvious.

user-pic

gotalife,

While Dick Cheney and Bill Clinton collectively were getting 6 deferments between them, and while George W. Bush used his daddy's influence to jump the line into a champagne unit that guaranteed he would never see combat, Jeremiah Wright, as reported by Lawrence Korb (USN, ret.), Ian Moss (USMC, ret.) and Daniel Schorr, gave up his student deferment, enlisted in the Marine Corps, served his two years, then volunteered again to become a Navy corpsman, was the valedictorian in corpsman school, then became a cardiopulmonary technician, eventually was assigned to Bethesda Naval Hospital, where he tended to President Johnson following his 1966 surgery. He was awarded three letters of commendation upon his separation from service in 1967.

Korb and Moss conclude:

How many of Wright's detractors, Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Reilly to name but a few, volunteered for service, and did so under the often tumultuous circumstances of a newly integrated armed forces and a society in the midst of a civil rights struggle? Not many. While words do count, so do actions. Let us not forget that, for whatever Rev. Wright may have said over the last 30 years, he has demonstrated his patriotism.

So, will you STFU about this now?

Nah, didn't think so.

If you paid attention to his speech, Obama is not calling the country to escape it. He is asking us to talk about it like adults. Pick an issue.

Now, I know talking about it is anathema in many corners of this backwards superstitious wilderness where children rule as in Lord of the Flies.

Let them run their ads. It will make no difference. People who get hopped up about hard truths wrapped in words they do not wish to hear aren't voting responsibly anyway, on any number of issues. That Obama has not given up on reaching them speaks volumes. Can Clinton say the same thing about the AA community? Oh that's right. SHe doesn't have to. Bill is black. Because he has an office in Harlem.

The Obliteration remark was her Rubicon. One cannot "mis-speak" nuke threats. If this is now dem foreign policy, I will write in my cat.

Enough. Superdels need to come out today.

Pax,
M.

Nah, didn't think so.

Rev. Wright's interview on Bill Moyers Friday will put the charactering to rest.

I didn't know this was happening. Thanks for the mention, I love Moyers but have been lax in watching him lately.

The real question is:

Will Hillary denounce the ad?

Or will she (as I expect) use it to say "See? Obama is damaged."

Of course, if she says that, and loses NC as expected, that would not look good.

user-pic
Or will she (as I expect) use it to say "See? Obama is damaged."

That's a sucker's bet. You know she will, either by conspicuous silence or by qualified denouncement (but not rejection).

user-pic

Well of course. It dovetails right into her argument because this is her argument.

How conveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeenient.

You know, it's a sad day for Democrats when Republicans are criticizing Republican attacks, and the Democratic opponent actually encourages such attacks.

I hope Obama and McCain will run an issue-based campaign, and dismiss personal attacks from either side.

user-pic

God, isn't that true? It is indeed a sad day. John McCain (at least in this instance) may have much more class than one of our Democratic contenders. I am truly ashamed if she doesn't denounce this ad right away. Her silence will speak volumes and I hope this, if nothing else, will sway the supers.

user-pic

The Grand Old Party of Racists does it again.

user-pic

It's a good thing for the cash strapped Hillary campaign that the GOP has come to her aid.

user-pic

Just the fact that the GOP is spending this money now is proof that this is about trying to influence the Super Delegates in the Dem party.

They really don't want to take on Obama because it just isn't a good match up for McCain.

Watch...Hillary will start wearing a flag pin brooch.

Or by having a flag tattooed on her ass, then mooning the crowds at rallies

I'm actually glad they NC GOP is running this ad.
Gutter, code-word racism, as this ad exemplifies, must be out in the open and exposed.
It works when it's whispered in the back alleys.
It backfires when it is trumpeted out in the open like this is.
It won't work in 2008 except with the racists who were never going to vote for Dem or for Obama in any event.

I do hope they run this into the ground. The GOP may be painting themselves into a corner as irrevocably racist. Running Obama against their usually covert racism is actually pure genius. The GOP either goes Klansman or cowers. Either way, they'll lose. This could burn them bad for a generation.

I wonder if this will help Hillary in North Carolina. She needs to win big, if she wants to overtake Obama in the popular vote and the delegate count. She also needs to prove to the super delegates that she can win over African Americans. Any Democrat who wants to be victorious in November is going to need the African American vote to do it, and so far, Hillary's numbers among AA's have been abysmal at best.

I don't think so, especially if she refuses to denounce it.

Obama will still win NC by a healthy margin.

user-pic

I think if she refuses to denounce it she won't even get 8% of the African-American vote in NC (which is what she got in PA). And she'll lose whatever support she has left in the remaining contests, and they just may sit home in November if she somehow pulls the nomination out of her ass.

user-pic

Greg and Eric, I (and others) are STILL waiting for a post about Obama's superdelegate pickup this morning. We've had three or four posts this morning consisting of non-issues and sensationalist bullshit that we already know is going to happen. I'm not saying that this isn't newsworthy, but isn't a superdelegate pickup (given last night's PA results and Hillary's "momentum" meme) equally as newsworthy? What's the deal?

Ditto. What's the dealy-o? I posted one of the superdelegate pickups this morning.

user-pic

Hey, you're from Saratoga Springs, huh? Not too far from New Paltz. Hey, neighbor!

I'll make the prediction right now that if Hillary picks up a super you'll see a post right away. I have not piled on Greg and Eric, but they have a peculiar method of determining what's newsworthy and what's not. ;P

Carol,
Maybe they're waiting for another Pennsylvania poll to post instead.
LOL

user-pic

Or another breathless phone conversation with Howard Wolfson LOL!

user-pic

Call me when McCain's "letters" actually have any effect. If McCain actually wanted to stop the GOP from using such tactics, he would issue a much stronger condemnation and a pledge not to campaign for any district or state that approves such an ad.

Letters of condemnation that no one reads will have no effect.

The NC African American community is highly engaged already. This will only serve to stoke that fire. It also won't cause second thoughts for white liberals and pragmatists - we already know that a Clinton will never win our state (hell, Bill couldn't even beat Bob freaking Dole in NC). He never had any of the DINO racist vote, and that's a much smaller share of the NC primary electorate than outsiders think. I'd bet that it's less than PA's, based on what I've been told by people who've lived in both states.

user-pic

well, my husband and I have talked about this a little, and I believe that there is going to be a whole lot less racism in the general public than the Republicans are counting on.

I think if they run this way, and it sure looks like they are - they are going to provoke some white people to vote for Obama in sheer self-defense against the Republicans selling the message under the radar that white people shouldn't let that "boy" put his finger on the button.

If you see what I mean at all - I really think they are shooting themselves in the face here, and I love it.

I see it, too. I think the backlash AGAINST racist tripe like this will equal (or almost equal) any racism effect. Add that to the extra motivation and turnout of African Americans in November, and I think you end up with a net positive result for Dems.

Racism, sexism, and homophobia are decreasing over time. Republicans have used all three for short-term gains, but IMHO at a significant long-term cost. I think time has definitely expired on sexism as a winning campaign tactic, and I'm pretty sure racism has too (give it another 10-20 years on homophobia, although its grip is already weakened as more people actually KNOW someone who is gay). I don't think Jesse Helms' infamous "white hands" ad would work in the 2008 version of NC. Even back in 1990, Helms would have lost if not for his constituent services operation.

Playing the race card just makes the GOP brand more (and more permanently) toxic in young voters' minds. They will reap what they sow, and I'll laugh my arse off.

Walking to my office from my parking space, I pass the Raleigh Obama HQ every day. There is always significant activity - white, black, young, old, men, women. The tide is really growing here. Couple that with an expected Gubernatorial primary win by Bev Perdue, and you could see one helluva coalition for the Democratic slate in November. It's not out of the realm of possibility that Obama takes our electoral votes, with women (first female Governor in NC history), African Americans, and liberal white guys like me HIGHLY motivated.

Personally I want Wright all over television. I want somebody anybody to confront the American public about how the "terrorist" group Al Queda was set up in Afghanistan and why when Reverend Wright talked about the "chickens coming home to roost" he was only expressing the outrage that all of us should feel about Iran-Contra the terrorism directed at the Soviet Union and the debt we have incurred to the Saudi regime. America needs a great deal of healing and maybe it should start with reverend Wright whose love of America is second to no ones. Maybe its time for some Truth and Reconciliation. Maybe before we condemn the incompetence of young George we should examine the repercussions of George senior's tenure as CIA director, President and VP.

I agree, and it should be noted that the whole "chickens coming home to roost" was quoting something Wright heard someone else say on Fox news! (former Ambassador Peck).

Here's the whole speech, which is worth a listen.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOdlnzkeoyQ

Someone may have already pointed this out, but we're not even talking about a 527 here. This is the state GOP itself. Are we really to believe that the Republican presidential nominee can't prevent the official party apparatus from doing this crap?

Meanwhile, McCain gets to release a very public statement decrying the tactic - while it CONTINUES.

Conspiracy theory: McCain is behind the whole thing. Think about it; he gets the ad played for free on news outlets, AND he gets to do the honorable thing by denouncing it.

It's possible, but I doubt it.

And here's why. The thing is, there are many Republicans who WANT to run these kind of attacks, and see McCain as weak for refusing to do so. Everytime McCain protests against this kind of language, he gets it from both sides: The liberals, who think he's in on it, and the Conservatives, who think he is not willing to "do what it takes."

We'll see if McCain can actually attract votes with this strategy, but it's my opinion you need your base to win.

Should Obama go negative?

I have managed several candidates faced with the same dilemma. Here are the the ground rules for going negative if you are candidate who really does not want to go negative (such as Obama):

1. Do you risk your opponent's smearing you to the point that it will permanently damage your reputation? (Unless you believe going negative is a greater wrong than losing.)

2. Is there a "negative" approach which is purely defensive and effective, that voters will understand is not underhanded or petty?

3. Is your negative message generally unknown by the electorate, completely accurate, and important to the voters' decisionmaking?

4. Are you winning anyway, and can actually make more headway toward your goal by making a virtue of staying positive?

Although it may seem obvious that Obama is winning and will almost certainly win the nomination whether or not he goes negative, the decision is not so simple.

For Obama at this stage, winning means winning the November election since he has the nomination wraped up. His foe is taking literally any swipes she can, including deception, scare tactics, and even racial appeals to win. Not responding runs the risk of permanent damage.

In my view, Obama's challenge is not whether to go negative (not all the time, but enough to put Hillary on the defensive a bit) but on what issues.

He must avoid the petty distractions he so rightly condemns. For example, running an ad on the Bosnia hallucination would seem petty. Bringing up Monica, Whitewater, Vince Foster, or other 1990's scandals of the Clinton administration would backfire since he needs to woo Bill Clinton supporters.

His best negative ads would be Hillary's NAFTA reversals of positions (juxtaposing contradictory statements); the Iraq vote and the Iran threat & vote (not to mention the "obliteration" remark) and other such issue oriented points.

She will then need to spend some of her limited funds on explaining the unexplainable for a change.

I say mix an aggressive approach with a new emphasis on change, change, change, (Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton) and get away from the inside the beltway "lobbyist" stuff (although it is important).

Aggressive, focus on change, and keep Clitnon on the defensive. Axelrod and Plouffe have done everything else perfectly -- bravo! -- but it's time to get the candidate in line on the message transition. This is the campaign's final test

user-pic

I live in NC, and I believe this GOP strategy will work against Obama & other dems, like Richard Moore. You won't understand, unless you've lived here, how obsessively important religion is to most North Carolinians, and how offended they get if someone says "god damn". It isn't even about the incendiary nature of the Rev. Wright's words. North Carolinians are used to hearing reverends say stupid shit. Some examples:

McCain supporter, Rev. Hagee to NPR's Terry Gross, "All Muslims are programmed to kill and we can thus never negotiate with any of them."

Rev. Jerry Falwell on 9/11, "I…believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this happen.’"

Rev. Pat Robertson on Disney's Gay Days, "I don't think I'd be waving those flags in God's face if I were you. ... [A] condition like this will bring about the destruction of your nation. It'll bring about terrorist bombs, it'll bring earthquakes, tornadoes and possibly a meteor."

And most North Carolinians support these reverends and others of their ilk, because the great unwashed of NC hates homosexuals, feminists, abortions, pagans (like me), and Muslims (or basically any non-Christian). The one thing North Carolinians do love (besides pork) is praising the good Lord. So anyone who dares say “god damn” is damned. And Senator Obama doubly so, not only because of what his reverend said, but also because half the morons here think he’s a Muslim anyway. BTW, I hope I am way off base and Mrs. Clinton gets run out of town on a rail on May 6.

I do not think that Obama should go negative. Remember, he has said that he is placing a bet on us, the American people, that we are fed up of the same old politics.

So really, it is up to US to show the politicians that Obama is right. That we are indeed fed up. If we allow the same old distractions to distract us again, well, then Obama will have lost his bet and we will have lost much more.

Good Ad !!

He's Too extreme for most Dems as well!

This one should have been addressed to Rae. I figured Otto, gotalife, and Rae all deserved their own copy.

The Obama campaign should give those candidates' campaigns 1 million dollars each.

Too extremely good? Yes, we agree!!

I'd like to see a collage of clips including John Hagee, Jerry Falwell,Pat Robertson-all their Greatest Hits moments of Religious Right Wing insanity. With Hagee-they get a double dip-calling the Catholic Church The Great Whore of Babylon,AND,pontificating that Hurricane Katrina was the wrath of God on New Orleans because a gay parade was planned for that weekend. I'm not making this up.Didn't Robertson call for the assassination of Chavez, among other things? And Falwell, although deceased, certainly made his "moral Majority " (?) mark on this and other generations. Oh,there's plenty of fodder to sling back-what are the dems waiting for ?

BTW, I am all for elevating the dialog, and neutering the "old politics",BUT, this reminds me of the old saw,of FIRST hitting the mule with the 2x4,to get his (or her) attention!I personally would LOVE to see Obama whip Hillary like a rented mule...and I think a whole lot of other folks would get a WHOLE lot of satisfaction from that attitude adjustment...it's LONG overdue.

RESPONSE AD

Obama: I was dissapointed to see the North Carolina Republican Party try to attack me and my supporters. The only thing extreme about me is the extreme **skicking we're going to lay on the right-wing when the people of North Carolina figure out that the Republicans have wrecked this great country's economy with massive debt, tax breaks for millionaires, and a $2 trillion war. I'm Barack Obama and I approve this message because to fix our economy we have to kick these say-anything right-wing scumbags out of office.
