McCain Airing Health Care Ad In Iowa

John McCain has a new ad airing in Iowa, featuring the candidate speaking to the camera and pitching his health care plan to voters in a key swing state -- an indication that McCain is looking to shore up his standing on domestic issues:

Iowa voted narrowly for Al Gore in 2000, then narrowly for President Bush in 2004, and polls this year have mostly shown McCain trailing Barack Obama and beating Hillary Clinton here. So no matter who the Democratic nominee ends up being, expect this state to be very closely contested.

I'd love to really look at the electoral map from the Democrat vs Republican standpoint.

I think the Democrats can win in Iowa and a lot of other places if we can just quit playing around in Wonderland, where Hillary Clinton is still in the race. In the real world she's not - this is a farce, but so be it. It is what it is.

And precisely because this state (and others) will be closely contested, we should be going after John McCain right now, not after each other.

Yep.

I'm really tired of fighting with other Democrats. It's wearing me down.

There is nothing to this ad except a proposed $5000 tax credit. The theme is that McCain will make health care affordable and available.....yet he does nothing to control costs, nor expand access to the best care usually reserved for the wealthy. We need to focus on the this guy soon, or he may fool enough people to squeak by in Novemeber.

Healthcare should be the third rail for the cranky old bastard. WTF is Joe Lieberman thinking about?

If our candidates won't do it, why don't we take on John McSame. I think the DNC ad is a good start. How about a DNC ad on health care. Lets face it the differences between Hillary and Barack on the subject are marginal. We need to define the guy now.

Think about what he is proposing. A $5,000 refundable tax credit for health care. That does nothing but transfer money to the insurance industry. Where is that money going to come from? I guess he will borrow it.

What slips through McCain's cracks, and generally through the cracks in any 'tax refund/tax credit' sort of answer is that too many folks who cannot afford health care [ or college savings plans, etc] are simply never earning enough money to be paying thousands of dollars in income taxes in the first place.
The tax refund/tax credit ideas are promoted by high earners who are looking for yet another way to cut their own taxes.

McSame must think Iowa voters are stupid. Because his health care "plan" (if it even deserves the title) will only accelerate the trend of employers not insuring their employees, increase costs for working families, and further swell the ranks of the uninsured. And you don't have to be an expert on health policy to understand this.

Finally joining to show my disgust.
It's like his health adviser looked up some talking points on the google.
I just heard, "Just keep letting it go the way it is and we'll throw some money at it." Sound familiar? Where's the demand to lower the failure rate? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ik1kMbu3HME
He's so passive on this, it's like he's begging for the other candidate to figure it out for him. His adviser should probably let him know that this is kind've a big deal for people.

Since when is "I don't know" straight talk? I'm pretty sure that's a lot closer towards incompetence.

Obama will win Iowa, Hillary will lose Iowa. It's that simple.

The nuts in the western third of the state (who continue to elect Steve King, which is more frightening than any Stephen King novel) will not come out in large numbers for McCain. He's not far enough right for them.

The blue central and eastern parts are the people who gave Obama a big win in the caucus. They got to see Hillary up close for months and didn't like it (she took third, remember). These are the people who have turned the entire state government and most congressional districts blue. Bordering Illinois could only make the eastern third even bluer for Obama.

On the other hand, Hillary will bring out all the far-right republicans in western Iowa (who despise her) and demoralize the fervent support Obama has in the rest of the state.

Polls have made this pretty obvious. Iowa will not be purple if Obama is the nominee, in my opinion. The state will be a lock for dems. McCain obviously thinks otherwise (remember he got smoked in the republican caucus) and I'm not sure what he's basing that on.
