Hillary Rolls Out Major New Post-Penn Ad Campaign In Pennsylvania

The Clinton campaign is rolling out a major new ad campaign in Pennsylvania, with a total of five new ads in the state where she needs an overwhelming win in two weeks.

This spot set to play in the Scranton media market, playing up her family background in Pennsylvania, might just be the first indication of a post-Penn campaign — it plays up a down-to-Earth, humanized image for Hillary rather than the appearance of strength that Penn has been busily crafting:

Four more ads are available after the jump.

This ad stars Gov. Ed Rendell, and will run in the Philadelphia media market where he used to be mayor:

And here's one with Philadelphia's current Mayor Michael Nutter, Hillary's most high-profile African-American supporter in the state, also running in the Philly market:

This ad focuses on the economy:

And here's an ad aimed at the Latino community, running in the Philly media market:

Wow, I thought she was being outspent in PA? Any info on the amt of money being spent here? (hope the tv stations are getting paid up front...)

Not just payment - certified check...

She just sent me an email begging for money to cover ads in PA. That means it's time to throw a little green Obama's way.

Is she actually putting these on air? Where is the money coming from?

I love it, Billy. Powerful ads, no?

Stop calling it "Post-Penn". He's still working for the campaign, no matter how much Hillary tries to spin it.

From CNN's Ticker:

"I find it kind of curious, we took action, and I think it was appropriate," she continued. "Contrast that to Senator Obama's campaign where, as far as I know, nothing was ever done when one of his top economic advisers representing the campaign, unlike Mr. Penn who was not representing the campaign, but Mr. Obama's representative told the Canadian government basically not to pay any attention to what Senator Obama was saying about NAFTA."

Spin, spin, spin. Unchecked by reality.

NAFTA-gate again. It will be a major part of the kitchen sink strategy days before voting. Like the crying, it has worked for her in the past.

user-pic

And I don't have a problem with the campaign trying to spin stuff. I don't like it when journalists ennable it.

Post-Penn, indeed.

user-pic

Why would they spin "post Penn"? That's inside baseball stuff. Chances are anyone who knows who Mark Penn is or who David Axelrod already knows who their going to support. Honestly, who would they fool with something like this.

user-pic

Real good ads, and she might've won Iowa had she run ads like these from the get-go.

And I say that as an Obama supporter.

She never did humanize herself, and Garin all along would have been a better adviser than Penn.

I agree DC
these ads are good and would have made her much more so of an inevitable candidate than her strong and wrong messages so far.

That childhood footage was taken $109 million dollars ago.

Jealous? Shows what can be done if you apply yourself.

I'm more jealous of the community service types. They sleep with a cleaner conscience at 3:00 am.

user-pic

Taken 109 million dollars ago, yes. But for the folks who can remember 1940, having such a 'summer cottage' and having a movie camera would indicate a level of wealth beyond most folks.

Having said that, I think it is a great ad, a precious little smiling girl juxtaposed with today's 'girl' and nostalgia for 'the good old days'.

Stenography? Again?

Who came up with the title and who came up with this decsription?

it plays up a down-to-Earth, humanized image for Hillary rather than the appearance of strength that Penn has been for

Was it take from the Clinton campaign's press release or was it all from your opinion?

I ask, because this isn't the first 'soft' ad Hillary has produced and they were all probably done before the Penn issue. So how did you come to your conclusion, if it was yours?

I asked this in a Greg post so I want to ask you:

Time to lay it on the table. At least then we can take what is said and printed with the knowledge of where it is coming from.

Who do you support in the primary and why?

I have more of a lurker for the past few years. It wasn't until the revamped site that I registered and started to comment.

I think I know bias when I see it. Maybe my own is blinding me. I'll admit that. But I get the distinct feeling that you and Greg both play gotchya and play down the good news from the Obama campaign while playing promoter and stenographer with anything Clinton.

Again, the question is why?

Words matter. Titles matter. Adjective and adverbs matter. They are chosen for a reason.

Thanks,

right, aside from the fact that the title here is deliberate pro-Clinton spin, there is no physical way that these ads were conceived, created and produced in the couple of days now, almost, since Penn was 'demoted' or whatever, from being Hillary's chief pollster to, um, Hillary's chief pollster. commercials take time to produce.

Humanized

Greg,

It's not Post-Penn if he's still on the campaign.

There was only one thing wrong with the Rodham baby.....

IT's ALIVE

That's way over the line, man. Do you realize that sounds like a threat. That kind of post doesn't go here. I'll get it taken down for you.

That first ad (the Scranton one) is a very nice break from what we've been seeing (I love the "raised on pinochle and the american dream" thing). Not sure however that it can overcome her previous hard line anti-dreaming stance.

Re: the Rendell one--does he really say that he's known Hillary for 50 years (that would mean they met in 1958... when she was just 11)? Or am I just hearing wrong? Is this common knowledge?

I think he says Fifteen.

It actually sounds like "fiftyteen". ;)

I think he said "fifteen".

Ok, nicely done but I have a quibble:

Neglected a little? Just a little?

O brother.

Hillary.

Like a real person. Only different.

Post-Penn, Hillary decides to portray herself as "down to Earth", and to "humanize" herself....Because obviously the "Hillary as beneficent Martian strategy" wasn't working.

user-pic

COTTAGE?!?! Oh, dear Lord, I hope she runs this ad over and over and over again. Her "cottage" is more house than most Pennsylvanians have set foot in during their lifetimes. What a clueless, elitist buffoon.

Funny thing strolling in here. I could have swore I clicked on FreeRepublic or LGF. The Probama sites are unrecognizable from the most rabid hate filled wingnut sites. John McCain, he is human, we already knew that. But Hillary human? Not a chance!

user-pic

Perhaps you should stroll over to MyDD. Or, Hillaryis44.org.

No rabid hate filled wingnuts there. At either place. Really.

user-pic

Perhaps you should stroll over to MyDD. Or, Hillaryis44.org.

And then come on back and tell us about how rabid and hatefilled TPM Election Central is, ok?

I look forward to your post.

Not a bad ad. I agree that if she had done this from the beginning she would not be in the position she is in now. It is the first positive ad from her in a long time.

user-pic
Funny thing strolling in here.

Yeah, funny thing that you're the first commenter today I've seen use "billary."

God these comments are almost word for word the same Repug troll comments that get posted on every liberal blog - just change the names and this could be something lifted off of Eschaton in 2003.

So TPM is equal to Hillaris44.org in journalistic standards. Good to know, thanks!

user-pic

No hate here, is there?

Yeah, funny thing that you're the first commenter today I've seen use "billary."

Please re-read my post. I clearly did not. And I agree with you on Obama supporters sounding precisely like Rethug trolls. Except Rethugs aren't the ones bashing the Clintons with wild eyed conspiracy theories currently.

Agree. No Billary I could see.

These are good ads.

The Governor and Mayor testimonials are probably the strongest.

I'm glad Hillary is turning around her campaign, I'm not going to insult her doing what she always should have been doing.

And she has an 18 point lead BEFORE she runs these ads? Damn!

I'd rather watch ads like those from Hillary than listen to Obama whining about being raised in a single-parent family with a racist white grandmother.

I nominate the above for dumbest post of the day!

I'm confused...is this a vicously pro-Hillary sight or a viciously pro-Obama sight? Some of you folks make my head hurt.

Obama supporters -- and I say this as one of you -- sorry, but not all stories get to be pro-Obama. It's a part of life that you don't get to win every single news story. Winning the election should be more than enough. And you, not all HRC supporters, but the crazy ones trained at those wonderful sites we all know and love.

You are not helping your candidate by taking every negative comment about her as a sign of hatred, and then going on to blast some real hatred of your own at Obama supporters in a rather sad attempt to lower everyone else to your level. It's a good thing for your side only online political junkies see this stuff or your candidate would be now by 40% in the national polls, not 10%. Please, for the love of everyone, try to cool it.

Now, to the actual post....I thought the first ad here was pretty lousy -- part of Hillary's problem is that she's trying too hard to be "human," whatever that means. Her MLK comments got her properly snarked on the Daily Show last night because she was doing the worst thing you can do in a dramatic context -- acting. (Ask actors about. "Acting" is the worst thing you can do on camera.)

The rest, however, are outstanding. Straight forward, informative. As an Obama backer, I've got to give credit even if Mark Penn was somehow involved.

Now, please, resume the name calling.

Let the reinvention begin...er...continue.

So uh, we're finally gonna get the issues based primary campaign we were expecting along? No more BS about trying to run to the right of McCain's war experience? Who'd a thunk it.

Although this change may get credited to Penn's dismissal (or quasi-dismissal), I like to think it was Destor23's endorsement of Obama that really got Hillary's attention.

This is the ad with the submessage: if you hate me you hate children

Not that Hillary has an honest bone in her body, but let's get real. She doesn't understand a single word of the Spanish language ad she's put out in PA. How much do you think she understands about those people's lives.

Nice music at the beginning, by the way. Nice and stereotypical, that is.

user-pic

Please re-read my post. I clearly did not.

I'll give you that much - you didn't.

But that's all I'll give you because otherwise you post word for word, except for the names of the parties, the same crap I've seen posted on liberal blogs by Repug trolls for 5 years.

I love Obama, but I'll admit--these are good ads.

Darn it.

"Post-Penn". ok.

Hey, I don't HATE anybody.

I'm ANGRY that people are trying to undermine Obama's candidacy with lies and spin.

Anger? Absolutely. Hate? Nope.

It just means we have more work to do.

I think many of you are missing the real point of the ad.

It is taking a certain group of people back to the Ozzie and Harriet days. Back to those good old days, in their memories when TV was pure and wholesome, and as white as could be. Hillary is playing the Hallmark card for the Touched by an Angel, and Matlock crowd. You know which group still plays Pinochle.

Did you hear that Mildred, Hillary also loves Pinochle like we still do. That Obama whippersnapper probably does not even know anything about Pinochle. He looks like one of those crazy kids with their video games and new fangled ideas. We better vote for Hillary. A president should know all about Pinochle. Well, time to head out for the Early Bird Special, come on Mildred, have you seen that new onion I bought to hang on my belt.

Gosh, I found this ad saccharine and silly. If I were an undecided PA voter, it would actually sour me ever so slightly on Sen Clinton. That said, I feel fairly confident that it would play really well to my grandmother (if she were an undecided PA voter, which she is not), so it probably will help Sen Clinton win some reasonable number of votes.

LOL. I'm just trying to imagine you as an undecided voter. Nice try. You need to go to some thug sites and see how they do that undecided thing. If that was your first effort at trolling we'll cut you some slack, but don't do it again. 15 minutes outside the echo chamber.

The point is well taken. If you cared to do a little historical research (and I cannot imagine why anyone would, but if you did...) and look on previous threads concerning Clinton ads, you would see that I almost always end up liking them when I put on my "undecided voter" thinking cap. That said, I certainly agree that my ability to project myself into the mind of an undecided voter is entirely suspect. I have not been undecided for many months now, so obviously my mind (for better or worse) does not work like your average undecided voter's.

I like these ads. There's a sweetness to them.

I wish she had run this kind of campaign from Iowa. Sadly, she did not.
