Hillary Hits Airwaves -- In Indiana

In another sign that Hillary has no intention of seeing this race end tonight, she hits the airwaves in Indiana with this straight-up spot on the economy...

Late Update: Hillary also has these last-minute ads in Pennsylvania, promoting her as a champion of working people and their economic concerns:

Make it stop, please.

Yeah, must suck when the candidate you don't like comes out with strong, positive, and factual ads overtly demonstrating their economic policy credentials.

God, can she even afford it?

You mean, can *we* afford it...

{shudder}

What's the media buy? This is a question you should answer every time you post any political ad (well to the extent you have the information). In this case, it would help give us a sense of just how much money she's pumping into the state and whether she's really contesting the state.

Just a thought.

It's a fantastic question. But I'd bet it's not insubstantial.

In effect, the Clinton campaign is going double-or-nothing. For months now, her candidacy has been a longshot (at best), and she's been desperately seeking some sort of break. Of all the arguments that she's trotted out, the one that seems to have had the most resonance is that Obama simply can't reach working-class whites.

There are two outcomes possible in today's voting - either it gets spun as confirmation of that argument, or as a refutation of it. If Obama runs strongly enough to dismiss the claim that he can't do well in states like Pennsylvania, then Clinton has no further use for her scant remaining funds. But if she wins by a decent margin, she'll need to show some momentum coming out of the race to refill her depleted campaign coffers. Going up in NC and IN, where she hasn't yet spent heavily, is a great way to do that - favorable coverage, coupled with an advertising surge, is likely to produce a post-Penna bump in the polls for her.

So that's the strategic calculus here. She's spending all she's got left in the hope that the Pennsylvania voting is scored a victory, and that she can produce a bounce in the next two states. If that pans out, she can refill her warchest and go on fighting. If she fails in Pennsylvania, the next round of polling is moot - she's going to be forced out of the race for lack of cash.

Who do you work for? I wanna vote for them!

You and Publius from ObWi would be an unbeatable team.

We continue to hear reports of broken machines. This tale was reported to the Daily News by a very patient voter:

"I just came from voting. Finally got my vote in at 49 ward, 07 division....after waiting for (the only) 2 voting machines to be repaired.

"I was able to cast my vote for Obama after waiting 1 and 1/2 hours. During that time at least 100 voters left without voting.....possibly not to return.

"I immediately called every News channel I could get through to. Persons who answered at the stations informed me that my ward was not the only one with broken machines and 'Paper ballots (as an alternative) without Obama's name on it. These provisional ballots did have Hiliary's name on them."

Uh huh.

The Clinton goons were out in force in Texas for the conventions. Someone sent emails and made robocalls that claimed to be from the Democratic party and said the conventions were cancelled.

Then they had people stationed at the conventions to issue challenges to people's credentials, which held the lines up for hours and hours and hours.

She's running this entire fucking campaign just like Karl Rove would.

She can't afford to stay in - what the fuck is she doing?

Howard - stop this, please.

Obama's name not on the provisional ballot??

What kind of banana republic operation is Rendell running there, anyway??

Casting confusion with sample ballots

Marcia Gelbart reports:

11:40 a.m.
The Democratic City Committee, which has not endorsed either Obama or Clinton, appears to be distributing multiple sample ballots today, causing some confusion as City Committee is trying to cater to individual wards.
The way it seems to have worked is that ward leaders who support Obama requested sample ballots with Obama's name at the top and Obama delegates listed below, and vice versa for ward leaders supporting Clinton.
There have been complaints, though, of Clinton ballots being handed out in Obama wards.

Greg,

Is this your way to gin up activity on this board?
It's almost like TaylorMarsh.com

Got anything in the bag that is at least neutral toward Obama?

Obama will run negative ads like w.

Is he still spewing a different kind of politics?

Might as well, the voters are drinking the wrong kool aid again.

Just when you think our country might get back on track with a Clinton economy and forieign policy, the gullible voters dring the wrong kool aid again.

How much deeper in debt can she go?

20 million for the general.

That 20 million ought to come in real handy for a candidate sitting out the general. Well played, Team Hillary!

wilson:

The point is that she's got $20 million from folks who already contributed the maximum to her campaign in the primary. It's not that they stockpiled it - it's that they can't spend it now, even if they want to.

On the other hand, she has $11 million in debts she'll have to retire. Obama, on the other hand, started the month with a rapidly-growing stash of $40 million - and he continues to double Hillary's fundraising hauls on a monthly basis.

So gotalife is a little bit behind the times here. Hillary's fundraising clout was the argument for her candidacy back in December, before voters went to the polls - we were supposed to understand that only she had the ties to the elites that could produce the big bucks necessary to win. Evidently, gotalife failed to get the Penn memo - now, Hillary's candidacy is pegged to her appeal to the working folks. Ordinary Americans. The heartland. You know, people who can write a check for $2,300, and then write another for the general election. The common people.

I'm predicting double digit Obama win for Indiana.

I didn't think anyone seriously thought Clinton was going to drop out after tonight.

On another matter, I never read the comments. But last night I read a beautifully written article in the Cafe section from a disillusioned blogger, and I decided to also read the responses in the comment section. I was actually amazed at the level of disillusionment among young Obama supporters. None overtly expressed disillusionment with Obama. But many were completely dismayed by the line of questioning Obama faced at the ABC debate, and by politics in general. I noticed that none of them mentioned the line of questioning Hillary faced at the MSNBC debate earlier. But they seemed to have been thrown by the ABC debate. It struck me that these kids are not likely to remain involved in politics for very long as the hard realities set in. I wasn't expecting to hear this so soon in the political process, with Obama still in the lead, and with money pouring in to his campaign.

Perhaps this wasn't an accurate sampling of how young people feel. Maybe the tone of the blogger's article simply elicited that kind of response. But it really did surprise me to see that much disillusionment already in what has not been that tough a primary, with so much ugliness yet to come.

Well, there's the voice of optimism incarnate. On the basis of a handful of posts by TPM bloggers, Otto is prepared to pass judgment on the fortitude of an entire generation.

Here's a hint, Otto. When commenters express their disillusionment with the mainstream media and with politics as usual, but don't express any dissappointment with Obama himself, they mean what they say. They're angry about the way things are, not disillusioned with the candidate. The conclusion that "they are not likely to remain involved in politics" follows only from the premise that politics necessarily needs to be this way. Sometimes, the things that enrage people lead them to become more involved, and not more apathetic. In fact, come to think of it, that's almost always the case. If they were tuning out, they wouldn't be posting on blogs.

Life has taken a surreal turn. Here in the small town suburb of Philly called Con-sho-hoc-ken where I live, population 8000+-, we see how crazy this election year is making life. Two sundays ago, as I came out of the local 7-11 with my donuts & coffee, I was astonished to come face to face with Sen. John Kerry. He was travelling with two Obama campaign workers, and obviously wanted to be noticed, as he went in for a pack of gum himself. No one realized at first it was really him, as such a meeting in my small town is not too common. He exchanged pleasantries with we who recognized him and asked us to support Sen. Obama. Then this morning, at the same 7-11, located just around the corner from the polls, my wife and I see none other than HRC and her ten car entourage. I must say, we in Conshohocken are not accustomed to this kind of attention. No ads can begin to give a candidate this kind of endorsement, positive or negative. Unfortunately for HRC, i had just come from casting my vote for the inspirational candidate, Sen. Obama. As I sized her up, I could not help but think how much she would make a decent V.P., or possibly press secretary, but if I ever had any trust in her, it is long gone. Campaigning is one thing, but I feel ss she has tried to destroy Sen. Obama's character and future.

And that, friends, is why it is GOOD that the campaign will continue past tonight.

Any ill-will brought by a certain candidate, will be insignificant to the good-will being felt by voters who are actually getting a chance to see their candidate in person.
