Colombia Fires Mark Penn

The Colombian government has terminated its contract with chief Clinton strategist Mark Penn's lobbying firm, after he apologized for personally meeting with their ambassador on Monday to discuss strategy for a free-trade deal that Hillary Clinton publicly opposes.

Apparently the Colombians did not take kindly to Penn calling the meeting "an error in judgment." From their statement: "The Colombian government considers this a lack of respect to Colombians, and finds this response unacceptable."

Huh. I wasn't expecting the conflict of interests to be resolved on that end.

It seems like poetic justice that this election would ultimately screw Penn out of money, though.

Of course now that the cover is blown on back-room dealing they have to distance themselves. But that's not going to stop them. They'll hop back in bed as soon as the media isn't looking.

Columbia and the Clintons know full well that NAFTA is unpopular and so would this deal be unpopular.

But it's long been Clintonian policy to lubricate relationships in the Americas with trade deals. As Krugman said, they consider it part of Strategic Foreign Policy, even if it's harmful to the middle class economy. Hawks like the Clintons and many Republicans want to ally with Columbia and pit them against Venezuela, for the oil and resources, and so US companies have access to sweatshop labor and waste dumping grounds. Never mind that Columbia is run by a quasi fascist government in a brutal police state.

They're not going to hire Penn back, he won't have shit for influence after this.

Colombia demonstrates some wisdom. Will Clinton learn from it?

God, I hope not. Besides being behind every bad campaign decision she's made, Mark Penn is the world's greatest source of guilt-free schadenfreude.

avatar

THIS IS EXCELLENT NEWS!! FOR HILLARY!!!

lol.

Thnx, idiotic! It still makes me laugh.

good to see you back.

What does it say about the cognitive dissonance of the Clinton campaign that Idiotic's act . . . which never varies one whit . . . never gets old, or less funny?

avatar

indeed... indeed.

avatar

As I read the many of the thoughtful comments here, I've been missing Idiotic's usual take on events. :-)

whoops! It's OK Marky..you still have that fat load of cash that the Clinton's owe you to fall back on.

The statement of the Columbian Govt. points out that they hire B-M (Penn) in March of 2007 for the express purpose of getting the trade deal voted through. Interesting, no?

So Columbia has more sense than Clinton!

Hilarious title. LOL.

Seriously, though. Colombia has now shown itself to have higher standards than the Hillary campaign.

I'm glad somebody fired Mark Penn.

Appears that the Columbians have more sense as to what’s owed to them by people who they hire to do a job. Sen. Clinton does not.

"The Colombian government considers this a lack of respect to Colombians, and finds this response unacceptable."

So let's see:

The Clinton campaign has pissed of Bosnians because of the "Tea on the tarmac" for two in Tuzla lies.

Now it has alienated Columbians...

And of course, the campaign hopes to both piss off and alienate Americans by arguing that pledged delegates don't matter as much as the total vote count, or failing to win the vote count by arguing that total vote count doesn't matter either, all that matters are the states Hillary won and the fact that Barack is unelectable despite all the money he is raising...

Jesus.
And I thought Dumbya was the bottom of the barrel....

But I know we won't hold Mark Penn's "error in judgment" against Hillary any more than we blamed Obama for sitting for twenty years in a church where the pastor damned America. We're a very fair-minded people.

Obama praised him and played the race card.

But the trolls give him a free pass.

Gotalife makes a minor appearance in this scene, and though he had few lines, he really made them shine: wrapping an emotional Ethnix Modifier with a bold new Trollus Reversus. The difference is in the details, and Gotalife again doesn't fail to deliver.

I remember when Trollus Reversus was actually illegal outside of preview. It seems as if these days, trolls are not only routinely performing tricks that were thought impossible, but are coming up with new tricks that we had heretofore not dared to imagine.

I used to admire trolling, and my kids looked up to trolls. These days, though, I only let them visit heavily moderated sites. I hate to admit it, but it is time the Commissioner started a random troll testing regimen.

What I need to know is, what is Goatlife's (sic) armor class?

lol. excellent. where have you been all my life?

Gotalife, run back under your bridge and start scaring some more sheep.

Hillary and her crew are really working hard to alienate every African American and other minority with their latest racist superdelegate sell.

You really think scaring is all he wants to do to those sheep? To what depth will he plumb? Oh, even the sheep are saying he isn't THAT deep.

I knew all along that this Otto jerk was a right wing racist try to pass himself off as a San Francisco liberal.

He let slip, last night, that he gets his talking points from right wing radio.

Clinton doesn't even have enough judgment to be President of Colombia, let alone the United States.

avatar

Maybe the Colombians figure paying for access to the Clintons this way was cheaper, but still not worth it. Maybe this is a vote of no confidence in the outcome of the race.

avatar

Exactly, Columbia clearly isn't worried about offending those closest to the next president of the United States.

If Clinton's management of this campaign hadn't caused it to fail, it should have otherwise disqualified her.

However steep Penn's charges for access to the Clintons might be, it's probably a bargain compared to what Bill 'n' Hill would have charged them.

When the Columbian government considers you too sleazy to hang with anymore, you are truly dogshit.

Good.

He should focus on this election.

It was an admitted mistake and she stayed loyal to him. He needed some more cocaine.

Move on.

I am watching Obama's stump speech.

It is the same stump speech since Iowa but his campaign did call McWar a warmonger.

McWar demanded Obama repudiate the comment and Obama caved.

Weak.

Of course, McWar is a warmonger on Iran.

We have video of him singning bomb, bomb, bomb, Iran.

What do you call that Obama?

very funny

Was Penn trying to get cocaine in Columbia? You're confusing me, here.

I've been watching CNN and have to find a barf bag for all of the Hillary speeches they're showing. With that new O'Bleness Memorial Hospital, Ohio story lie and her rubbish about caring for workers and union members while supporting Mark Penn the union buster with millions of her contributors' money, CNN needs a ticker with a Pinocchio rating while they show her speeches. She tries to pass herself off as the common woman, but her tax returns show that she's anything but.

Gotalife needs a Pinocchio rating too.

It is time for Penn to resign or for Clinton to fire him. He's an unnecessary distraction. It is unfortunate that he hadn't put business aside to give Clinton 100% of his efforts. Unfortunate, too, that he's chosen to press policy positions that (a) are at odds with Clinton's and (b) are on behalf a foreign government. It is time for him to go.

I never agree with you. On this issue though, we're on the same side.

Penn has been a deadweight on the Clinton campaign.

Obamaramabamalamamaniacista here, agreeing with you.

How far could Clinton have gotten without Penn?

Some of the Hillarians are talking as though Penn is a bit player. He's the CHIEF STRATEGIST of her campaign. Firing him would be a very big deal.

Not that Lisa Simpson wouldn't have come up with better strategy.

As for the trade deal itself, I wouldn't take her public comments as any reliable indicator that she isn't in fact in favor of it. Penn's work on it constitutes the same not-so-mixed message her public life has constructed on any number of issues.

It's time for Hillary to go. If her hypocricy is too much to take. She has more lobbyists than McCain advising her.

www.matthewweaverstilloncrack.com

So it turns out the Colombians were expecting more than just PR from Jabba the Penn. They were paying for access into Clinton's trade policy. Now that Clinton has to distance herself from them to secure Pennsylvania's blue-collar vote, the Colombians figure they can't believe a word she says.
Their next move is to secure a lobbyist involved in the McCain camp. Count on it.

Clinton is against the Colombian trade deal but you are right about McLobbyist.

Clinton forgot to tell her husband to be against the deal. Bill Clinton on June 8, 2007:

"We need to remember that we are friends," Clinton said at a ceremony to accept an award from Uribe. "We need to remember that we want to share a common future. We need to remember that for the first time in over three decades there is a law enforcement presence representing the elected government of Colombia."

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/06/08/AR2007060802223.html

I'd like to see some reliable evidence that she's against that trade deal. Indeed, her factual opposition to any trade deal, if it can be demonstrated (I've never seen a single instance), would be . . . novel.

Be careful or the Columbians are going to fire you next.

avatar

I thought I read that Penn's firm is involved in McSame's campaign.

It's the lobbying arm of Penn's firm, run by a guy named Charlie Black. Black works for McCain, and Black works for Penn. And Penn works for Clinton.

avatar

This has nothing to do with the real issue: Hillary's chief strategist has been working trade deals for over a year. It's the relationship between Hillary and Mark Penn that people should be talking about.

The Clintons spun all of you around once again?

avatar

Haha

avatar

Add Penn to the growing list of people inconvenienced by the Clinton Presidential Lottery.

Penn is scum. I was appalled when she hired him. Then she compounded the whole by hiring every last piece of scum the Democratic party has ever been in the consulting business with. James Carville? I mean - really, Hillary? You had to bring back that noronic cracker with one of the most mean-spirited mouths in politics?

I was hoping he'd go away. Thankfully, I hear he is - they're leaving DC. What does that tell anyone?

Campaign staff matters. I know I beat this into the ground, but I am sooooooooooooo damn tired of losing elections.

I think the Obama camp calling McCain a warmonger then Obama caving would be a good post here.

I think we should discuss this issue instead of all the distractions.

I mean, weak on national saecurity lost the last two elections and is more important than Penn.

Hillary is Margaret Thatcher. She's a hawk and massive warmonger like her buddy Joe Lieberman. Clinton is an opportunistic fraud as her refusal to admit her mistake like John Edwards shows. If someone without access to all of the information that everybody here were smart enough to know that the Bush/Cheney drum up to the Iraq War was B.S., than so did she. As her Bosnia lie and so many other mistruths and exaggerations show, she can't be trusted.

While Hillary gave George W. Bush her stamp of approval (and then repeated it on Iran), bold American leaders like Al Gore, Robert Byrd and Barack Obama spoke out full voiced against that catastrophic blunder.

Perhaps I was a bit mean. I'm sorry Mrs. Thatcher.

yes - take that back now, I say - Thatcher would never complain that the boys club was beating up on her. No, she was a real feminist, even if you couldn't agree with a lot of her stuff.

Ed Schultz isn't part of the Obama campaign, genius. He's a supporter, as am I. If I think McCain is an asshole and state as much, does Obama have to apologize for me? Give me a break.

Clinton has little choice but to fire Penn. Is that enough?

Penn has created a real problem for Clinton. This very real conflict of interest was already known but mostly ignored in MSM. But when Penn met with Colombian officials he created a story with legs. Clinton surely knew about Penn’s involvement. Either that or she was oblivious to what Washington insiders knew. Hence, the only comment she could make was that she didn't see it as a conflict of interest. Either way it looks bad for her. It gives Obama’s union supporters (and all supporters) an opportunity to further challenge her integrity, credibility and judgment. Doubt about whatever her past role in NAFTA was ceases to be just a historical matter. Now the question is: What is her real position and how might she really represent her working class constituency should she become president.

The problem she has with voters about how truthful she is will color whatever she or her surrogates says about this matter. In turn, because this looks bad, it will potentially further diminish people’s perceptions of her honesty. That may have some impact on Pennsylvania.

The bigger problem will be with super delegates. How does a super delegate who depends on union support and argues for protecting American jobs, endorse Clinton without a measure of risk and the need to explain himself. This is why she must fire Penn, swiftly.

There are probably background issues that will surface in the blogs, as well. Who are Penn’s other clients? What are the undisclosed details of the Clinton’s 2007 taxes? How well does Clinton run her campaign (how much was Penn paid?) and what does that say about her judgment? How does this expose her in a general election and does this mean that she is less electable? These may or may not be fair questions, but they will gain some traction on the internet nonetheless.

This may overshadow Bosnia if she doesn’t act quickly. It is 3:00 am.

Will they be moving to an unreachable part of the country? Please?

I'll have to find it, but someone here in comments the other posted a story that they are moving back to Louisiana!

Here is the link, CNN is running it too:

You keep defending McCain.

Wow that is amazingly huge breaking news.

A lefty talk-radio guy calls McCain a "warmonger" at an Obama event. Obama wasn't there.

Obama spokesperson says, “John McCain is not a warmonger and should not be described as such.... He’s a supporter of a war that Senator Obama believes should have never been authorized and never been waged.”

So Obama would rather not to be associated with inflammatory rhetoric. Is that what you're having a problem with?

Or are you disturbed by the initial "warmonger" comment?

Here's the strategery...

1) Identify a comment by someone vaguely connected with the Obama campaign as "controversial."

2) Clutch pearls hard, hoping to attract wingnuts who will clutch pearls harder.

3) Point at wingnuts clutching pearls; call Obama "unelectable."

4) ??????

5) VICTORY!

PLEASE keep this up.

I second this motion.

YES, please!

From the Daily Kos:

Remember when Hillary Clinton said this?

Peering at the 50 or so reporters packed into a small hotel conference room here, she added: "I would ask you to look at this story and substitute my name for Sen. Obama’s name and see what you would do with this story ... Just ask yourself [what you would do] if some of my advisers had been having private meetings with foreign governments."

Well, she no longer has to wonder about what would happen thanks to Mark Penn, who once said he had time for only two clients, Clinton and Microsoft. Clearly, despite the millions the campaign is paying him, he has some
