New Poll Finds Al Franken Falling Further Behind In Minnesota

The round of negative stories about Al Franken's failure to properly pay business taxes in all the states he was active now appears to be damaging him and endangering his effort to oust Senator Norm Coleman (R-MN), a new poll finds.

The latest numbers from Rasmussen, compared to last month:

Coleman (R) 50% (+2)
Franken (D) 43% (-3)

National Democrats have viewed this seat as a top pickup opportunity, but unless Franken can figure out a way to deal with his travails, the bad publicity hitting him may cause Dems to squander the chance to oust one of the GOP's most vulnerable incumbents.

Wow, didn't see that one coming - NOT! I love Al Franken, but Jesus, what made him think he could run for US Senate? What's up, Minnesota? If you're going to run a pseudo-celebrity, go with Garrison Keillor or something.

user-pic

Aside from being a stuck-up dork, Garrison Keillor has lived in NYC for about 30 years. Oh, "maintained a home in Manhattan" is the official line.

This would be the guy that sued the makers of the "Prairie Ho' Companion" t-shirt, and sued his neighbors when they wanted to build an addition onto their home, despite the fact that he has the hugest house on the block.

If that guy was any more full of himself, he'd burst.

Oh yeah, I don't like his phony-nostalgia radio show, either.

I don't carry water for Franken, whose book "Lying Liars" was funny and good in a topical way. But he wasn't that great on the radio. I don't live in MN. If the guy turns out to be a shyster, then the fault for his candidacy has to be laid at the MN Democratic party. He should have been vetted.

Thanks.

mp

I thought Keillor lived in Minnesota and recorded his show there.

user-pic

I thought Franken also had a place in NY.

Yeah. Next they'll be electing a wrestler or something as governor.

To be honest, the DFL bench is rather thin. That is why Franken could come in and take it.

Yeah, what DID ever happen to the once-proud Minnesota DFL? With all due respect to Franken, and not to say he's at all on the same level, but this seems to me kind of as though here in Ohio we hadn't had anybody of the stature of Sherrod Brown to run for Senate and as a result ended up nominating Jerry Springer.

The difference being Jerry Springer is a well known Ohio politician who is beloved in Cincinnati and could easily get at least 40% of the vote before actively campaigning.

I really love Springer-the-politician. I ADORE him - probably more than I like Franken.

It doesn't matter what your politics are - if you want a guy like Al Franken to be a US senator, you have got to be crazy. Norm Coleman, whatever his shortcomings, would have my vote if I were in Minnesota.

Care to elaborate on why you hate Franken so much? I generally like the guy, but then I don't know too much about him beyond the fact that "Lying Liars" made me laugh, as did his Stuart Smalley thing on SNL. I can't believe he would be worse than Coleman, and he would add to a Democratic Sen. majority.

user-pic

I wish Al hadn't decided to do this.

*sigh*

user-pic

Coleman is the luckiest man alive, a political Ringo Starr. Wellstone dies; the party picks Zombie Mondale; now Chucklehead Al Franken.

Not a lot to choose from out here, and those issues will continue to hurt him. He hasn't been out and campaigning much - at least not in outstate Minnesota. If he gets out there and starts talking to people, then he might have a chance.

A month ago, the incumbent Senator led the comedian 48% to 46%.

Comedian? Hmmm...nice way to marginalize and diminish him, Rasmussen. That jumped out at me right away. Why not call him "author", or "writer" or "radio host", or something like that. Maybe my radar is just set too high these days, but that was an interesting choice of words there.

Having said that, Al needs to get his shit together quick and push back on this so we can get that asshole Coleman out of there.

Voting for Norm Coleman is the definition of insanity.

I love Minnesota, but a lot of really stupid live there. But you could say the same about Pennsylvania, Ohio, the USA, Canada, Mexico, Romania, Tajikistan...

No place is uniquely more stupid than any other.

Except of course for certain pockets of population in the mountainous areas of the country where people keep marrying their first cousins and their nieces and nephews.

;)

Sorry to be so unPC but many places are very very stupid ... like the deep south and the mountain west where assholes like Dick Cheney get re-elected over and over because the majority of people living there LOVE those type of guys. You can pretty much look at a map of red and blue states and figure out where people are still in LOVE with Bush and everything Republican.... and that the majority of folks living there are IDIOTS AND ASSHOLES!

the weight of this sentiment is diminished when coming from someone whose tag is "hollywood."

We will not get a true picture until we have
nominated a candidate for President.

Senator Obama ran very strong in Minnesota, so he would give Al a boost. Mr. Franken needs to spend some time with a speech coach. He is very weak in that area.

Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer is cut from the same cloth as Wellstone. Since Minnesota isn't a primary state (well, not really), it gives underdogs like Jack a chance. I think this poll might be very damaging to Franken's chances, even though he has a HUGE lead in cash and name recognition.

Silver Heron, dude, don't you know that all of the children here in Lake Wobegon are above average? ;)

Sure, that's a great idea - run someone most of the state has never even heard of before. How'd that work with Ann Wynia or John Marty in their campaigns for governor?

I'm willing to be that 75% of people you stopped on the street anywhere in MN couldn't tell you who the guy is. And fewer could tell you why it mattered.

I was sorry to see Ciresi drop - I think he'd have been a much stronger opponent for the philanderer, Slimy Norman Quimby.

Didn't Minnesota elect Jesse Ventura Governor?

Maybe Franken should work on building up his pecs.

user-pic

I was just thinking that: Between Ventura and Coleman, the good people of MN a picking an awfully odd time to get picky about their politicians.

But November's a long way off.

user-pic

fwiw, franken has been involved in politics all his adult life, albeit unprofessionally. coleman, the shame of my beloved brooklyn, isn't unbeatable, even by franken.

oh great news : )

Al Franken is a slimey weazel, maybe not as bad as Limbaugh, but almost. another smug and smarmy political zealot. I hope he gets colon cancer. stage 4 : )

user-pic

Anybody that's listened to Al for any significant amount of time would realize what a bright and informed person he is on the important issues.

Based on the above, most comments are coming from peolpe who didn't listen to him on a daily basis.

I won't say that I agreed with him on every position, but he did invite guests with opposing opininions and most importantly, he invited guests who knew what Al didn't know. That is a quality sorely missing from many in Washington.

user-pic

methinks the comments here are indicative of franken's problem - he's already a polarizing character.

sure, those that like him think he comes across as a "nice guy" but on the other side of that coin he's reviled as a dfh and pinko commie liberal.

and of course there's the total class of people like mila who, whether joking or not, say they would like to see him get colon cancer. what a model human being you are, mila.

i despise dick cheney but there's no person on this earth i'm going to wish a painful and debilitating disease upon. maybe mila needs a nice hobby.

user-pic

Mila is a racist, bigoted troglodyte who was, I believe, Milo Buggeroff in a former (TPM) life. He is a true troll and we should probably ignore him.

OK, OK I am sorry, I hope Franken merely gets stage 3 colon cancer.

Really, he *is* a smug know-it-all, kinda like Mrs. John Kerry (god what a bint she is) but he's also not that smart as he thinks he is.

No, rethunk it over, stage 4 it is

user-pic

thanks, carol...it's sad what some people have to do for attention.

as for the subject of this post, we'll see how those numbers move once the dems have a nominee and we're past august. i just can't trust a poll more than 6 months out. of course, by late october, it could be worse...

Looks like just noise with the MOE. If Obama is the nominee, Franken will win. Clinton, not so clear.

The problem isn't Minnesotan voters, but our terrible system which places inordinate power in the hands of the most hard core activists. Yes, we have a primary, but it isn't until September and all the major candidates have agreed to abide by the party's endorsement which is made in June. In order to particpate in this endorsement process you have to devote hours of your life not just on the night of the caucus, but in subsequent district conventions. Most voters simply don't have the time or interest in doing this.

Mike Ciresi, who dropped out about a month ago, would have likely been a stronger general election candidate against Coleman, but he failed to appeal to the hard core activists in the way that Franken did. Simmilarly, I understand that many are excited about newcomer and ex-Marine Ashwin Madia, but I also beleive that his opponent who he wrested the party endorsement from, Senator Terri Bonoff, would have been a stronger general election candidate.

Personally, I think that Franken is very smart, well-informed and funny, but I am certain that he will lose to Coleman, who is a much better politican than most readers of TPM will care to admit. The only thing that might save Franken will be a huge Obama tidal wave and/or a backlash against Coleman stemming from some hyper-partisan comments he may foolishly make at the GOP Convention in Saint Paul this September.

user-pic

I expected this when I heard that Franken was running. Did he really believe that saying "I'm serious" could overcome his image as a very intelligent clown? Practically anyone else would beat Coleman.

user-pic

This is a great case study of the difference between Democrats and Republicans.

If Franken were a Republican, his national and state party would come immediately to his defense and point out that whatever the criticisms are, they mean nothing and are irrelevant to the issues that are meaningful to Minnesotans. They would agressively defend their candidate and they would not hesitate.

Now, let's look at what the Democrats do...

They see their candidate has a problem and decide to back away from him, hold their hands up and whisper to the media that Franken needs to figure out a way to reverse this trend. No help. Not even a tepid effort to defend the man against this ultimately meaningless criticism that has nothing to do with anything related to being a US Senator.

How typical of the cowardly, ineffective Democrats to behave this way with respect to Al Franken who is a terrific candidate running against one of the slimiest, most hypocritical Republicans in the Senate (and that's sayin somethin!). But instead of coming to his defense, they'll let him either recover on his own without their help or leave him slowly twisting in the wind. With friends like this...

oleeb is absolutely right! In fact, he/she is so right that it was worth it to post his/her comment twice, and it's worth re-reading on a regular basis.

Indeed, it's sad to say this about our side, but we, Dems, are simply pathetic at electoral politics. Faced with a choice between an ugly win or a noble loss, we invariably go for the latter.

Then, we whine how miserable our lives are under the Repugs. When, oh when will we learn?

user-pic

The problem is worse than that! Norm is a "used car salesman" -- a very successful one! No one checks under the hood and examines the engine too closely and voters buy what he sells. He can sell far right, right, center right, and if need be he'll convince you he's a moderate independent.

The Democrats not only don't sell their candidate, they can defend any message. If the Democratic party had a spine and a strong alternative agenda to the Republicans, Norm wouldn't be able to triangulate himself over to the middle so easily.

As long as the Democrats refuse to stand for anything, the Republicans can stand for anything.

Don't panic. The Rasmussen poll is notoriously unreliable in these type of polls.

Al should Just keep pounding on Coleman's voting record and let it speak for it self. Display a list of his record in an ad and let the voters see how he has voted against their interest and for the interest of the Bush Administration time and time again. This should be the only ad to run over and over again until the voters get it. Also evoke Wellstone, he will help him through this. Al must win. The whole country need him.

Living in the St. Paul area, but not too engaged with local politics (I just moved here barely a year ago), I have seen many Coleman commercials - all touting his independence from Bush. I haven't seen a single ad on the teevee or heard anything on the Radio (mostly listen to KQ here). Yeah I know Franken is running - but I don't see anything coming from him. Nor in the northern part of the state where I am from originally, and which was the base of Wellstone's strength and could be his...

Honestly, besides articles in the newspaper, I wasn't even sure Franken was running all that seriously. These numbers don't surprise me one bit.

Yeah maybe he needs to admit that some people feel because of his working history and despite his obvious interest in politics over the years that he just doesn't get it. Well that is all good and fine but let's be fair and look at Mr coleman's voting record, let's see what type of issue he stands for, let's see what kind of effects this has on the community at large? (Insert Coleman's voting record -here -)
Then go out and use this stump speech to elicit repsonses in town hall meetings and speeches. Ask the poeple of MN how things are workign out for them with Coleman in charge? If they are reluctant to support a psuedo-celebrity ask them why? Will they always be reluctant to trust pseudo-celebrities despite the poor record if their current politicians in addressing the concerns of most MN?

Maybe we can get a comment from a native of the region to get a better feel! Maybe soemone has good background info on Sen Coleman and hist history?

I missed it. What travails is Franken experiencing? And does Franken have a primary opponent?

"Difference between Democrats and Republicans" - could.not.agree.more...

Geez, the guy falls 3 points in a poll over six months from the election and everyone's writing his obituary.

After years as a conservative water carrier, Coleman has made a series of very uncharacteristic votes (often voting with Dems) in the past several months because he is terrified of losing his seat. This is still a race Dems can win, with ANY candidate. Someone please get a commercial together highlighting the difference between Coleman's past votes and the ones he made over the last few months, and end it by saying he'll "do anything to win re-election." It will turn off potential liberal voters by showing him as a phony, and turn off conservatives by showing him as a hypocrite who is only interested in re-election. 'Nuff said, you can thank me later.

Food for thought: Two Questions

Question No. 1

It is time to elect a new world leader, and only your vote counts.
Here are the facts about the three candidates. Who would you vote for?

Candidate A

Associates with crooked politicians, and consults with astrologist. He's had two mistresses. He also chain smokes and drinks 8 to 10 martinis a day.

Candidate B

He was kicked out of office twice, sleeps until noon, used opium in college and drinks a quart of whiskey every evening.

Candidate C

He is a decorated war hero. He's a vegetarian, doesn't smoke, drinks an occasional beer and never cheated on his wife.

Which of these candidates would be our choice?

Decide first... no peeking, then scroll down for the response.

Candidate A is Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Candidate B is Winston Churchill.
Candidate C is Adolf Hitler.

Question No.2

Can you imagine working for a company that has a little morethan 500 employees and has the following statistics:

* 29 have been accused of spousal abuse
* 7 have been arrested for fraud
* 19 have been accused of writing bad checks
* 117 have directly or indirectly bankrupted at least 2 businesses
* 3 have done time for assault
* 71 cannot get a credit card due to bad credit
* 14 have been arrested on drug-related charges
* 8 have been arrested for shoplifting
* 21 are currently defendants in lawsuits

Can you guess which organization this is?

Give up yet?
