Ahead Of May Primary, GOP Registrations Declining In North Carolina

In an interesting statistic from North Carolina, the number of registered Republicans has actually gone down by about 6,700 this in this Southern state — while over 165,000 new voters have joined the rolls from the Democratic campaigns' registration drives.

While it's not a guarantee that the state could go Democratic for president, it could still be a good measure of overall partisan enthusiasm. If more voters are switching from the Republicans to being Democrats or independents, it could be a hint to down-ticket campaigns about which voters to target in order to retain Democratic seats and go after Republican ones.

I think those outside the Southeast fail to understand North Carolina. We are grouped in the same soup as Georgia and South Carolina. People have no idea how liberal the Raleigh-Durham area is, nor that Asheville has one of the largest gay populations east of the Mississippi. Also even arch-conservative Charlotte is softening up, with an influx of transplants from the west coast due to banking industry mergers. We are not red, we are purple and trending blue.

Here's to the land of the long leaf pine...

The Oregonian reported a similar phenomenon in Oregon.

North Carolina ranks higher in tolerance and social progressivism than any southern state except for Tennessee. Race relations are better in North Carolina than any part of the country except for the Northwest.

It is, however, 2nd amendment country. There were billboards all over North Carolina last time around saying "20 years of anti-gun voting, now he claims to be a hunter: THAT DOG WON'T HUNT." And Kerry couldn't even compete in North Carolina with a Favorite Son running with him.

Any candidate against whom they can point to evidence of strong gun control advocacy as a state or federal legislator cannot win North Carolina.
