Report: Both Obama And Clinton Embellished Senate Roles

The Washington Post reports that as Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton compete over who is more qualified to be president, both are being accused by Senate colleagues of building up their accomplishments a little too much beyond what's actually deserved.

Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA) says that Obama has tried to put his name up as a key backer of the failed immigration bill from 2006 and 2007, when in reality all he did was attend some press conferences and sit in on meeting.

Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton is coming under fire from political opponents for claiming that she was a main force behind establishing the SCHIP program in the 90s, and for supposedly taking a lead role in major international incidents during her husband's administration.

News Flash: Candidates puff up their resumes.

What about the HRC Bosnia dealio? That is more than an embellishment, it's a work of pure fiction.

He hasn't really relied too heavily on his role in the immigration bill, really I haven't heard him really mention it since Super Tuesday, and it was only brought up a few times, and generally by Ted Kennedy if I remember correctly, who was a major player. Regardless any potential exaggeration on his part was minor.

As opposed to Hillary, who has built her entire campaign around her "exaggerations", or as they are turning out, flat out lies. Obama could have had nothing to do with immigration, and it wouldn't have changed his campaign or this election at all, but if you take away Hillary's fluffed resume with all its stolen credit for things she had nothing to do with, she never would have been a presidential candidate.

Both Obama and Clinton are politicans . . . OH MY . . . File this under non-news. Also a FYI, McCain is a way bigger fibber. Duh to the nth and beyond.

Why is this being reported when there are over 15 Senate races and 435 House seats to be filled?

Arlen Specter criticizing Obama!?! Imagine...

Where does Arlen Spector come up with that? I haven't heard Obama lauding his role on that failed immigration bill. The damn thing was reviled by Republican voters and most Dem voters viewed it as a cobbled together piece of Harry Reid led appeasement that deserved to die.

It is pathetic that MSM papers like WaPO and NYT are fooling the people by highlighting non-issues in an election that is all about grave issues.

And TPM seems to be in cahoots with them to keep the voters deliberately ignorant and uninformed about the candidates' caliber and qualifications.

CLASSIC WASHPOST 'BALANCED' TRIPE

They cannot say that one candidate embellishes without saying the other does so they cast about and find...

Arlen Specter who is running for a TOUGH reelection bid in a purple state, and ask HIM... Gee, ya think Arlen might puff up an attack on Obama to help solidify his base? Naaaahhh

I call BS on this, and TPM you also SUCK for not saying the obvious.

ONE MORE TIME, PEOPLE, "Balance" means *what*?

This is like the CNN story about a GOP Illinois legislator who didn't think Obama was that special. No shit.

And not just any "purple" state, but .... Pennsylvania....

Coincidence? you be the judge....

Politicians embellishing their accomplishments??!!!

THE HORROR!!!

At last! Some news to sink my gums into!
Arlen what would Bush have done without you?

For evidence of Obama's "puffery" we have a Republican senator running for re-election.

For evidence of Clinton's "puffery" we have timelines of when things happened, we have her own schedules, etc. Little things called facts.

Bully for the Washington Post for presenting a fair report.

A republican senator had criticisms in the middle of a general election of the probable Dem. nominee? Holy shit, stop the presees. This is important stuff. Lets put that one in the same pile as "Osama Bin Ladden does not celebrate Christmas".

So Republican Arlen "Magic Bullet" Specter claims the leading candidate in the other party, Democratic candidate Barack Obama didn't do a lot in the Senate?

Color me shocked... SHOCKED I tell ya!

On the bright side (for all those warm and fuzzy political operatives/activists out there), one of the benefits of having two potential Democratic nominees still jousting is the opportunity to use the broad-stroke message they “both embellish” as a tool to defuse the storyline. One could focus on highlighting Senator Specter’s point we all expect candidates will inflate their record and their political importance in X,Y, and Z. Therefore, an operative could argue this really “isn’t a big issue” because “everyone does it”., while at the same time reframing the inquiry to better fit the candidates message.

This need to reframe issues to fit a given candidate’s larger message is anonymously expressed by the former Clinton official’s sincere opinion of Hillary Clinton’s SCHIP campaign rhetoric, while also demonstrated by the Kennedy example of pivot and reappraisal. A central problem in campaign tactics appears to be how to highlight team X and deflate Team Y without abuse, while not bringing attention to team X’s faux pas.

Then again, had more division between the two candidates occurred in the article, or had one candidate been highlighted while the other wasn’t, I assume there would be more comments in the thread. It’s just a hunch, but division or the injustice of a “biased” article or even political gossip seems to paradoxically “unite” people into battle lines more than “balanced” assessment/reports. Hence, the fixation on attacking Specter in the comment thread.

Oh, the travesty of Specter! Oh, the horror!

FactCheck.org examined the issue of Clinton's SCHIP claims. Their conclusion: Despite disparagement from political rivals, we find she deserves ample credit for expanding children's health insurance.
