Pro-Hillary 527 On The Air In Texas

The American Leadership Project, the 527 group that was set up in order to run ads promoting Hillary Clinton in the upcoming primaries, has a new ad airing in Texas:

Hillary is not going to concede. She is going all the way to the convention:

WASHINGTON -- Hillary Clinton will take the Democratic nomination even if she does not win the popular vote, but persuades enough superdelegates to vote for her at the convention, her campaign advisers say.

The New York senator, who lost three primaries Tuesday night, now lags slightly behind her rival, Illinois Senator Barack Obama, in the delegate count. She is even further behind in "pledged'' delegates, those assigned by virtue of primaries and caucuses.

But Clinton will not concede the race to Obama if he wins a greater number of pledged delegates by the end of the primary season, and will count on the 796 elected officials and party bigwigs to put her over the top, if necessary, said Clinton's communications director, Howard Wolfson.

"I want to be clear about the fact that neither campaign is in a position to win this nomination without the support of the votes of the superdelegates,'' Wolfson told reporters in a conference call.

"We don't make distinctions between delegates chosen by million of voters in a primary and those chosen between tens of thousands in caucuses,'' Wolfson said. "And we don't make distinctions when it comes to elected officials'' who vote as superdelegates at the convention.

"We are interested in acquiring delegates, period,'' he added.

Isnt this the 527 that is illegal by charter but doesnt care because the fine is so small compared to the amount ofmoney that they have?

Too bad there isn't a 527 to run this video...

She will be a great VP for McCain. Lieberman in a pantsuit.

Hillary was a brunette once?

Limbaugh told his listeners today to vote for her to prolong this.

There's a phrase to describe what Hillary's doing at this point, and it's aiding and abetting.

Maybe her 527 can start running ads for McCain, to stop the scary young Democrat with a thin resume from winning. He's so unworthy . . .

Not like he ever did something _really_ important, like govern Arkansas, our closest facsimile to a third world state (has anyone noted the irony of the Clintons trashing on small backwater states?)

Happy days are here again!

I agree with your comment articleman - but there are also rumors about republicans in Texas voting for Obama to make sure the *itch loses. So everything should balance out, I would let the voters speak for themselves.

The Swampland at Chicago Tribune have reported that Clinton phonebankers are calling Barack Obama "Osama bin Laden" in their phone calls.

'Did I say Osama? I meant Obama!' says Clintonite

by James Oliphant

A lawyer in a predominantly Democratic suburb of Cleveland relates this tale to The Swamp on the day before the all-important Ohio primary:

So last night around dinner time, the phone rings. It’s the Hillary campaign–official number, per the caller ID. The woman on the other end asks me if Hillary can count on my support Tuesday. I say I have not decided.

She asks what would help me decide. I say, “Well . . . maybe she can make Bill her vice president.” She does not know how to take me, of course, but has to assume I am serious. “I don’t think she can do that.” “Bill will have a significant role in major decisions, though, won’t he?” I ask. “Oh, certainly he will be very involved. Do you like Bill?” “Very much.” I reply.

She then launches into a two-minute spiel on all the very specific initiatives and proposals Hillary has put forth on health care, the war in Iraq, etc., etc. At the end of her spiel, she says, “And we haven’t heard anything that specific from Osama bin Laden.”

I say, “You did not just say that.” She replies, “I’m sorry . . . just a slip of the tongue.” She then thanks me for my time and encourages me to vote for Hillary on Tuesday.

The lawyer says he was "stunned" and tells The Swamp the call originated from the Clinton campaign in Columbus. Are the dirty tricks ramping up as we get down to the wire? Swamp readers in Ohio and Texas, relate your own encounters with the Clinton or Obama campaigns if you've had them.

Some interesting news on the early voter turnout in Tx:

Voting in Dem primary- 860, 988
Voting in Republican primary- 278,368

Difference- 588, 540

Huge numbers of Republican crossovers being reported. Should help Obama and may account for the
56-44 vote split for Obama in early voters by Belo.

Texas Projection with delegate count at The Field
Interesting projections by Al Giordano, respected blogger who has been inside the campaigns in OH and TX. He calls TX for Obama and OH for Clinton, Vt. for Obama, RI for Clinton Gives the delegate breakdown.

Al Giordono is great and has been deadly accurate in past primary contests. I highly recommend his blog as well. www.ruralvotes.com/thefield

Bill's reply on behalf of Obama. See the video and pass it on!

"MR. RUSSERT: Here's the interesting thing about politics and why we love to cover campaigns. This year's being now described as fear vs. hope. The phone represents fear, and Obama is trying to suggest hope. Back in 2004, your man, William Jefferson Clinton, campaigning for John Kerry, framed Clinton's political law this way. Let's watch.

(Videotape, October 25, 2004: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83MdEnb1Kr8)

FMR. PRES. CLINTON: Now, one of Clinton's laws of politics is this: If one candidate's trying to scare you and the other one's trying to get you to think, if one candidate's appealing to your fears and the other one's appealing to your hopes, you better vote for the person who wants you to think and hope.

(End videotape)"

Hey flufferwink, good catch. I mean except for the part where you said "Clinton phonebankers are calling Barack Obama "Osama bin Laden" in their phone calls" I think you acidentally left out the other examples that would lead you to refer to "Clinon phonebankers." Because one isn't plural, the last I checked. And as we all know, volunteer phonebankers pretty much are in charge of making policy for the campaign, so if one person got a phone call like this, we can clearly extrapolate that it must be happening all over the place, right? I mean, who needs evidence? Because I'm sure this is the first time anyone has ever said Osama when they meant Obama.

Wait a minute! Look at this. Ted Kennedy at the Washington Press Club: "KENNEDY: There you go.

Why don't we just ask Osama bin -- Osama Obama -- Obama what -- since he won by such a big amount. Seriously, Senator Obama is really unique and special."

Can you believe it? Those bastards at the Clinton campaign have even got Ted Kennedy spreading their lies! Have they no shame?

Wow ChrisO...take a chill pill.

This is what happens when our leaders resort to the Rove at-all-costs playbook. It sinks us all into the mire of mud.

This is the whole basis for the movement built around Obama. I am so sick of this political schoolyard mud wrestling.

The Clintons may succeed in sinking Obama. They can not do a thing about the rest of us supporting him though. Our deep resentment of the smearing of our governance will not go away.

Can they win the nomination? Perhaps. Can they win the electorate...not so much.

The only way Clinton wins the nomination is if she destroys the integrity of the nomination process. It will be a pyhrric victory that will all but hand the presidency to McCain in the process, and it seems she will be doing it with the help of Republican voters.

I sincerely hope that Obama wins Texas going away (get to the caucuses tonight all you voters!) and holds Ohio close. If she cannot make ground on Obama this week then the superdelegates will not, must not let her ruin our chances of winning in November.

I'm sorry, I would have been happy with Clinton as the nominee, but she's lost this fight fair and square and she needs to be pushed into doing the right thing if she won't do it herself.

As far as I'm aware, online videos such as the ones by will.i.am or Jack Nicholson remain outside the scope of the regulations governing 527 groups. If this pro-Clinton ad is getting TV airtime, it sure looks like a violation to me.

Obama should raise a stink about this and point out that such Roveian tactics are exactly what we're trying to put behind us.

Not to forget though, there apparently have been ads by a union in Ohio for Obama. Though he made a statement that he preferred support go through traditional channels, in order to truly claim the high ground and not get caught up in subtle distinctions that no one will understand, he needs to more sternly reprimand any ads on his behalf by outside groups.

There is a very real, and legal, difference between 527 swiftboating groups set up for the sole purpose of attacking an opponent or helping another candidate, and an established labor union giving support for a candidate or issue.

If she hangs on after today, she will only harm the party's chances. She has gone increasingly negative, throwing everything but the kitchen sink at Obama. This will take a toll if it continues for months. She won't win even though she's playing dirty, but it will give plenty of material for the GOP to work with.

It is a choice of putting personal ego ahead of the party. Does Hillary really want the Democrats to lose just to spite them if she can't be the nominee? Is Hillary really a Nader-like figure, who would rather the whole country go down i nflames than let a rival like Gore win in 2000?

This is dangerous forthe party and the coutnry. We can't afford four more years of GOP rule. Is Hillary going to damage our nominee and make that happen? Does she want to be responsible for destroying America only out of spite, out of being a sore loser?

If Hillary doesn't bow out on March 5th, the party should, as Bill Richardson said, come together around whoever has a substantial lead in the delegate count. We need to end this as a party and not let Hillary's personal ego ruin 2008 for us.

The GOP wants this to go on. The media loves bloody conventions for ratings. The Dems should be smart and wrap this up. We can't lose the country just because one woman doesn't know how to lose with honor!

I think part of the problem is her campaign is run by idiots and they rather the race go on since they are being paid a ton.

Precisely, and Mark Penn will benefit from either a Hillary or a McCain win since his business associate, Charlie Black, also works on McCain's campaign.

A "527 group that was set up in order to run ads promoting" a specific candidate is, by definition, blatantly, brazenly illegal. Guess they're counting on some pardon action from President Hillary.

It's a dangerous gamble on all sides. Let's just hope OH/TX/VT/RI voters take the high road and keep things moving along in the right direction - Obama, of course!

If she wins Ohio, she will claim victory (even when she loses delegates overall tonight). How pathetic will that be?

Nevermind, her entire campaign has been pathetic. Nothing really seems to change here.

Senator Clinton says that John McCain would be a better President than Senator Obama.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ou4JnWQsxKw&eurl=http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0308/Clinton_on_Obama_and_McCain.html

I wouldn't blame Mark Penn. You cannot make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. Her revealing comment that she prefers McCain to Obama says it all; she's made it very personal between her and Obama, its pure sore losership, she is poisonously self-centered. I wouldn't bring Bill into this either, I bet he is tearing his hair out at this point and would be relieved to have her off stage. I've never felt Obama was the best possible Democratic candidate this year, Edwards is looking better and better in hindsight, but I think she would be the worst possible one, especially if she keeps campaigning for McCain. I made a decision yesterday that if she manages to wrest the nomination from Obama I will hold my nose and vote for her. I don't think I would have to worry much about the impact of her shortcomings on her presidency because I just don't think she'll ever be president.

For those who are complaining about Hillary having a 527, I imagine you are equally upset that Obama had 527's going full force in the California primary. Hillary's 527 was not swiftboating Obama, it was just an ad.

For the supposed call the lawyer got from the Hillary phone bank...where's your evidence? Did you record it? I doubt it, nothing but hearsay. Anyone can say anything they want, I like to see proof.

If Hillary wins Ohio and even comes in a small lead in TX, the three weeks before PA will give her plenty of time to bring Obama down with Rezko and NAFTA-gate. His armor has been punctured and the more he runs from the story, the more the press is going to chase after him. It was a mistake for him to say in the SD debate that he hardly knew Rezko. He should have been smart enough to know that it would come out that he and Rezko had a 17 year friendship and business relationship. Once caught in a lie, he loses all credibility.

American Leadership Project (ALP), a 527, is running a pro-Clinton ad in Texas. Nothing wrong with that except that on its website, ALP promises to disclose the names of all donors giving $1,000 or more within 24 hours of the donation. No donor names have been disclosed to date.

The only info I have found so far is from ALP's initial 8871 filed with the IRS on 2/15/08:

I assume this is the 527 that I read about which intends on breaking FEC rules intentionally because the fine is relatively insignificant in terms of cost-benefit.

I can just hear Hillary later tonight......."Thank you Ohio, and Rhode Island!!! You bastards in Vermont and Texas, you're &*(%*%in' Dead!!"

I can just hear Hillary later tonight......."Thank you Ohio, and Rhode Island!!! You bastards in Vermont and Texas, you're &*(%*%in' Dead!!"

I can hear Hillary later tonight...."Thank you Ohio, and Rhode Island!" and under her breath, "you bastards in Vermont and Texas, you're *%^$in DEAD!"

Whoa, my bad. Sorry!

The SEIU has a TV spot up for Obama in Texas. Sorry, don't have a link for it.

Okay, I guess I'm missing something here. Isn't it illegal for a 527 to directly advocate a single candidate?

On the bright side, if teh Clintons manage to wrest the nomination from the voters, she'll lose in November, and we'll be rid of them once and for all, since they'll carry the stink of loser.

A seven vote Alito-Roberts Supreme Court is kind of a high price to pay to be rid of them, however.

Yes, it's illegal, but Billary realize that the FEC can't do a damn thing about it, and they'll gladly pay the petty fine they're assessed in a year or two.

527's are not illegal.

"There are basically two kinds of 527s active in federal politics: those that exist to promote certain politicians (which Public Citizen calls 'politician 527s') and those that exist to promote certain ideas, interests and partisan orientations in election campaigns. (Public Citizen calls these 'non-politician 527s')...

"Politician 527s generally serve as soft money arms of 'leadership PACs,' which incumbents use to aid other candidates and otherwise further their own careers. Like the campaign committees of members of Congress, leadership PACs can receive only 'hard money' contributions, which are limited in amounts and may not come directly from corporations or unions. Politician 527s use their soft money mainly to sponsor events that promote their own careers, help create a 'farm team' of successful state and local candidates, and spur partisan 'get-out-the-vote (GOTV)' efforts.

"Campaign committees and leadership PACs of members of Congress report to the Federal Election Commission (FEC), while 527 groups report to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Basic information about their contributions and expenditures are then posted on an IRS website."

BNL, i wasn't contesting the legality of a 527 I was contesting the legality of a 527 advocating a single candidate. By law, the 527 can single out a candidate negatively, single out a party, single out an idea but cannot singlehandedly advocate an individual candidate.

Good ad. It looks as tho more people are actually looking behind the Obama curtain now.

Rae

I think that Obama should go ahead and concede.

Hillary is a moderate. Polls are showing that the left alone is not enough to pull off a win in the general election. Moderates will go for McCain if their choice is between the most liberal democrat and a moderate republican, McCain.

Hillary wins both liberals and moderates and can win the general election. She has a real record of changes and accomplishments. Like the video said, she can point to real changes not just a speech.

Hey RaeK, i have not seen your avatar on here before but to keep abreast of some of the relevent topics on these boards, I think it wuld be hard to say that either candidate in the democratic field has a long history of servin g in public service as a representative of the people. Essentially John McCain would win a factual arguement relating to experience as a single issue, although I think both of us would agree that she is essentially a moderate. So what might be a good start in looking into the candidates history would be this link
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/2/20/201332/807/36/458633

Sorry I do not know how to make it hot so you will just have to cut and paste. And of course if you think I am being biased go to the government website that records the actions of these two democratic sentators.

Back to what you said, I agree that moderates democrats, Independents and those that define themsleves as liberal will have to all participate in this election to ensure that John McCain does not win but I do not believe that Mrs Clinton has better crossover appeal nor do I think she appeals more than McCain might to Independents. If you thin so, I will be more than glad to listen to your reasoning but this is just what I see, especially as I live in a southern state where alot of people define themselves as independents and the Clintons are still fresh in many of their minds. Thanks for the blogging and I look forward to your answer.

I agree with you, it's about time the media started looking into Obama's past and quit giving him softball questions. Watching his interview with the press this morning was painful. The guy didn't know how to handle a press that was asking tough questions and not buying his tap dance routine. He crumbled like a cookie and ran for the hills. How in the world does anyone think that he will be able to handle the press if he's fighting against the Republican party in the National election? He also needs to see a speech therapist, his stumbling and "ughs" are getting to be as embarrassing as Bush's "heh heh heh's".
