Obama Wins Vermont, Networks Say

As expected, all three networks call Vermont for Obama. Preliminary exits say the spread is 62%-37% It's unclear yet, of course, how many of the state's 15 delegates Obama nets.

So now we're seriously underway. Here are the poll closing times for the remaining contests:

* Ohio: 7:30 p.m.

* Texas: 8 p.m.

* Texas caucus begins 8:15 p.m.

* Rhode Island 9 p.m.

We're blogging the results right here. Stay tuned.

Late Update: On MSNBC just now, Obama supporter John Kerry makes a heady prediction:

I'll bet you he wins more delegates as a margin in Vermont than she wins if she wins Ohio or Texas.

Bears watching. Separately, someone needs to tell Kerry that the one thing he shouldn't talk about is Obama's Harvard background, as he did just now. He's not the right messenger for that one...

Late Update: Exit polls here.

Late Update: NBC News allocates eight Vermont delegates for Obama and five for Hillary, with two outstanding.

THIS IS EXCELLENT NEWS!! FOR HILARY!!!

CNN’s exit polls in Vermont extrapolate to a 62-38 Obama landslide, although they’ll be adjusted to match the actual returns. He wins in virtually every category. Clinton took voters without a college education – if there’s another demographic category she took, I haven’t been able to find it.

Statistic of the evening: In Vermont, Obama wins 61-38 among voters over 65. Never thought I’d see a number like that.

No, it's not legit until the local town crier, Idiotic, delivers the excellent news.

Hah! He beat you to it.

That's why he's the town crier, not me. ;-)

Did I hear wrong? Did I hear Wolf Blitzer say that Obama got all 15 delegates in VT??

My hearing sucks, so I'm sure I'm wrong.

Someone please correct me (I'm sure someone will).

Greg:

That's 62-37 (or 38, depending on which figures you're using). And it looks like Obama took the delegate count, 10-5.

Breaking News. Stop the presses.

Our new campaign talking point will be:

It Takes A Clinton To Raze A Village, in Order To Capture It.

if that is so, then perhaps Hillary "My Lai" Clinton will be appropriate should she continue on for another 7 weeks, or more, with her scurrilous campaign tactics of late. I would hope not -- and pray she finds a way to gracefully bow out soon -- but it's hard to put anything past Camp Hillary these days

As long as Texas and Ohio are too close to call, then it's a victory for Obama--regardless if he actually wins. The delegate spread will be pretty small and that, at the end of the day, is all that matters.

Also, check out Marc Ambinder's site. Apparently there are some shennigans going on in Texas:

So 10-5, then. That makes more sense to me. Thank you for the clarification, FOTW.

Welcome to irrelevance, Vermont!

Jump right in! Water's fine!

The last few days, I have been worried about a repeat of New Hampshire. With the early tracking polls, that is certainly possible, with the benefit going to Obama. If that somehow plays out I wonder if it might not be that the "sympathy" vote sung the other way. In other words, in NH voters were put off by the attacks on the "crying" incident. Here voters may have been put off by the negative turn the Clinton camp took in the last week. Alternatively, the attacks could have provided extra motivation to Obama supporters, similar to the huge fundraising following NH. Obviously far too early to tell, but that was just my gut reaction to the surprising exit polls.

Of course I was also surprised by Kerry's exit number in 2004 for what that was worth.

chuck todd said he needs 64% to get the 10-5 split. if it's under that, they say it's a 9-6 split.

user-pic

Vermont Democratic delegate count is on the bubble

For it to split 10-5, Obama needs to get 65%, otherwise it will be 9-6

The Republican primary here is winner take all

I hear you, Josh Hussein. In my homestate (oh, and Hillary's too), Obama votes in many precincts of NYC were declared somehow erased entirely, leading Mayor Bloomberg to declare "fraud".

But, apparently, NY doesn't matter either, because I haven't heard a damn thing about it in the news anymore.

And you're right. The water IS fine!

I could be wrong, but I thought that the problems with the voting machines were only related to the early results. I heard that the official results coming from the machines reflected the actual votes for each candidate.

Senator Kerry can mention Harvard, how ridiculous. And if that matters, America deserves the dumbed down candidate.

Thank you Vermont. Thanks for helping Senator Obama sustain his elected delegates lead.

I think I have figured out who the Democratic VP nominee will be. Teaser; It will be the same person on either an Obama or Hillary ticket. That should make it easy for you to figure out who it is. In other words: I think that the VP slot is all ready settled, but the Presidential slot is still to be decided.

Joementum?

No. Neither one of them will touch him. It is some one that can bring a unique set of assets to either Obama or Hillary in November. Think about who could help them carry a key state.

I give up; who is it?

WHO IS IT?????

WHO IS IT????

According to reporter extrodinaire Al G:
Based on the exit polls so far...
Clinton will win fewer Rhode Island delegates than the +5 The Field predicted, and may lose the state altogether.

- Clinton may win fewer Ohio delegates than the +7 The Field estimated, and is unlikely to win more. It is possible (although less so than in Rhode Island) that she could lose the popular vote there.

- Obama seems more likely to win the popular vote in Texas than not, but it’s likely to be close.

Doing the math on CNN's "union/non-union" exit poll data, Clinton wins OH by about 4%. That's not nearly enough of a margin for the Clintons, IMHO.

Vermont now makes the Obama win streak TWELVE straight victories, and every one of them a trouncing of Hillary.

Hillary is on a role. Super Delegates must be swooning at how well she has been doing!

If you worked in a deli, and were asked to make a sandwich called "Hillary On A Roll"...

...what would your ingredients be?

(Just trying to pass the time without chewing any more nails off)

user-pic

That's easy! Liveherworst

Definitely pimiento cheese.

Holy crap I'm going nuts. Ohio hasn't reported any results in half an hour, but Texas looks like a lock for Obama.

Ahhhhhh! :)

Furion,

as much as I want to believe you, I think that the early votes are skewing the numbers at this time... I hope that the anecdotal numbers in other posts to other strings are right, and that you are right, but for now I'll sit and bite my nails.

"Separately, someone needs to tell Kerry that the one thing he shouldn't talk about is Obama's Harvard background, as he did just now. He's not the right messenger for that one..."

Separately, someone needs to tell Greg Sargent people aren't that stupid and he doesn't need to patronize them by projecting his personal intellectual shortcomings onto them.

Harvard is a highly regarded university regardless of Kerry's endorsement. For Obama to be a Harvard grad and editor of the Law Review is only part of the total package which is worth more in total than the sum of parts and tends to defy the usual stereotypes.

The early voting in Texas seems to have gone heavily for Obama.

Well... who cares anyway. Vermont voted for Jesse Jackson too!!! Ohh... that was NC, sorry. Well, VTs not part of our 17 state strategy...

Way to go VT.

Well, one thing is clear to me thus far: I am moving to Vermont! Not only did they go for Obama, but Brattleboro impeached Cheney and Bush! (I will delay my move until I vote in the PA primary.)

Honestly, I was hoping for a higher delegate split out of VT tonight, but that's what you get for elevating your expectations too high.

Thanks Vermont. Welcome to the We Don't Matter Club.

According to CNN a while ago, twenty percent of Dem voters in OH said that race was an "important factor" in their vote. Eighty percent of the clowns stupid enough to admit this to a total stranger said they voted for HC.

I live in rural Ohio. There is, sadly, absolutely no stigma attached to using the "n word" out here. Forget the scare ads and the experience stuff; a big chunk of the OH vote is first and foremost racism.

user-pic

I have family on the eastern side of West Virginia and I'm afraid it's not too different there, although I don't hear the n-word so much. ~sigh~

user-pic

Yeah, and those are also the people who will vote for McCain in the GE.

Speaking of idiots, Charlie Rose has a bunch of idiots on, all sure to take big risks and stick their fingers way out into the wind.

I heart Vermont.

"Racists for Hillary"

I wonder if she'll denounce and reject their votes.
