Obama Spokesman: We Don't Have Any Secret Bloc Of Super-Delegates

We keep hearing -- from Tom Brokaw, and today, from Obama's Missouri co-chair -- that the Obama campaign has a secret bloc of 50 super-delegates that will suddenly reveal that they're all jumping to Obama en masse.

But the story is bogus, says the Obama camp.

Obama spokesperson Bill Burton emails us:

This is just a rumor. There is no secret stash of superdelegates that we are sitting on waiting to roll out.

In case you were wondering.

Bummer.

So who told the Missouri co-chair and Brokaw that there was a secret stash? Hope someone chases this up!

Brokaw got his info. from the Missouri co-chair and the Missouri co-chair got his from his wazoo. Would not this have explained everything?

Don't worry. They're lying again. They have that stash of delegates. They're just waiting for the right time to roll them out.

Let's hope so, right?

An interesting, informal experiment is to go to a list of the superdelegate endorsements:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_2008_United_States_Democratic_Party_Superdelegates#Seated_superdelegates

and order the endorsements by date (click the “Endorse Date” button).

Although many endorsements do not carry a date, there is clearly a pattern from those that do: HRC is endorsed nearly universally *before* the Iowa Caucaus and gradually we come to a state where Obama is now nearly universally endorsed (by those superdelegates exercising the privilege). It’s a breathtaking transition for its smoothness.

What to make of this? There is a real momentum.

As FlyOnTheWall blogged, it’s possible to show that no real candidate momentum exists on a state-by-state basis as each state votes predictably according to its demographics. (A minor quibble is that some states have open primaries which would tend to foul some of the statistics but the case is well-made nonetheless.)

However, the superdelegate endorsements show that there is clearly momentum *with the superdelegates.* These individuals can take their time, digest the campaign messages, not be held sway by 3 am phone calls or Canadian Government leaks or rumors of Obama’s religion (regardless of the fact that shouldn’t be an issue anyway).

You are right, that's what cracks me up about Hillary's "buyer's remorse" strategy against Obama, because SHE is the one who people only supported when they thought she was a sure thing, and after it turned out she wasn't, you know most of them we like, "ah shit.."

Oops. Idiots.

Why do these idiots keep telling people there is a stash then? Blah.

And when is Obama going to drop the fundraising bomb for Feb? I wanna see how bad they trounced Hillary.

Headlines from the BHO camp are sparse these days. What gives?

Agreed. I want to see those Feb. money figures, and I want to see a coherent strategy that builds his case in more aggressive ways. Why has she been allowed 2 days now to bask in this glow? Asking for tax returns doesn't slow this momentum shift. Papers are boring; he needs action and some visual/physical events to bring the attention back to him. DO SOMETHING NOW! ("A good plan enacted now, is better than the perfect plan enacted too late.")

Don't ignore the tax return argument

1. the last time something was hidden in Hillary's tax returns it took millions of dollars and hundreds of person-hours to diffuse and it doesn't matter that the allegations proved to be nothing. The bad taint from thise allegations hasn't ever gone away.

2. Hillary's previous argument was that she'd release them if and when she became the nominee, thus depriving the voters of any of that information in voting for or against her as nominee. If there is something buried in them that can bite her (w/r or not it draws blood) waiting until she secures the nomination means that we're stuck with her no matter how damaged she is.

3. Her latest position is that she'll release them after 4/15 -nice try Hills, but that's after PA -her last best chance.

The question is why is she stalling?

DOH!

Ok so I'm wrong about the PA date -it's April 22nd. Still doesn't change the question of why she's dragging it out. If there's nothing questionable there and everything is above board why not release them now? It's not like we're talking about THIS year's return, but last years. Right?

As yourself a question, have you filed your return yet? Have most of your neighbors filed their returns yet?

You appear to have a very inquisitive mind. You would make an excellent scientist. On the other hand, would not tax return be someone's privacy? Why do you want to lower yourself to the level of PEEP TOM?

"On the other hand, would not tax return be someone's privacy?"

Despite your odd syntax Yoda, the answer is NO.

Not when you're running for public office, and particularly not P.O.T.U.S. Are you telling me you'd vote for someone without any clue where they made or spent their money?

I've been wondering about this, too. I can't help but think there is something going on behind the scenes. But there are certain opportunities that are being missed.

- They could ask Harper for an apology and reframe the NAFTA leak issue as foreign interference to hurt his campaign.

- They could build up the next two primaries are critical, instead of passively allowing the media to accept the frame that it all comes down to Pennsylvania.

I sure hope they're working on something that is worth the opportunity cost.

Plausible deniability....

1. It would have been nice if they were as clear and responsive about the stupid gd nafta bs.

2. The obama camp is quiet because they are trying to right the ship and are strategizing.

3. I am very curious about the feb numbers as well. I wonder what's taking so long. The length of time it is taking to release the numbers is disconcerting.

someone's fudging. BEING SPUN!! IS EXCELLENT NEWS!!! FOR HILLARY!!!!

Idiotic, you always make me laugh! Thanks for your pithy and spot-on posts! :^)

Jesus, does anybody with a brain think it's plausible that there is a little clown car full of superdelegates who are going to wait to come out until AFTER an event in which, in fact, Clinton posts a big win?

Why on earth would they be MORE willing to come out after such an event than before? Obviously, if they didn't have enough conviction to come out before, they're not going to have enough after Obama loses, are they?

There's only one likely origin of the rumor about the "non-existent gang of 50".

It is not the Obama campaign. Setting false expectations is not characteristic of their behavior. Not now. Not a year ago.

So who benefits when these false assertions don't come to fruition?

What would he be waiting to roll them out for if they did exist? I wish he had 'em. And if he does, he'd better let 'em loose.

He'll roll them out after he wins Pennsylvania.

"Wins Pennsylvania." Like he won Ohio and every other swing state he's been in. No, wait... He lost those didn't he?

IA and MO being swing states is EXCELLENT NEWS! FOR HILLARY!! but bad news for your argument:(

I heard 50 Cent(while sipping on a bottle of 50/50 Vitamin Water) was gonna roll out the 50 delegate/50 million marketing blitz.

The MTV crowd would really love that.

Personally, I wish they would have just settled for 40 delegates/40 million. That way they could have Jay-Z roll it out at the 40/40 club.

The MTV crowd would really really love that.

Word.

The more I read posts from Obama's friends the clearer the pattern becomes. I'm developing a theory here. Just a suspicion still, but maybe there is something to it. Keep those posts coming, please.

What, that we're universally disgusted by Rovian politics, we think America is better than what's been going on for the past 7 years, we don't like lies and smears and think attack politics need to be used against the other party, not out own? 'Cause that's what I'm getting, too.

and where will you put your "wit' after Obama is nominated?

personally i find you very funny so i hope you survive the stress right till the day of nomination.

Obama has a lot of time to roll out any new superdelegates, so my guess is that this number, if correct, will be spread out from here to Pennsylvania. However, I can see if a few pop up pre-Wyoming/Mississippi, the trend will continue (and accelerate) prior to Pennsylvania.

Of course, if it's not correct, Clinton's camp can claim they "blunted" the rollout with their wins. That is, if the rumor wasn't started by them in the first place just for this reason. But the Clinton's wouldn't be that cynical, nor would the voters fall for such a transparent ploy.

Oh wait, I'm talking about the Clintons and your average American . . . ah well . . .

Coming out for Obama would require at least 50 superdelegates to each grow a pair of wontons, which doesn't appear to be happening. My take on it is that they're all afraid to come out before there's a "clear" winner for fear of Clinton camp reprisals.

The storyline behind the 50 supers and the Feb. fundraising was that the Obama camp planned on dropping them late this week after winning on Tuesday as a way to push Hillary out of the race. By that logic, we should expect to hear something about this a week from now, after smashing victories in Wyoming and Mississippi. What better way to underline that these states count than a bunch of supers saying the results pushed them into the Obama camp? Which, of course, is great news for Hillary.

I read the original story and I've watched the video of Brokaw. Nowhere have I read or heard a specific mention of these fabled "50 delegates." Can someone point me to a link where Brokaw said this?

Oh, there are probably more than 50 superdelegates ready to endorse Obama, but are respecting Pelosi's wishes not to.

I'm not worried.

Make it 100, what about 400, enough to push Obama over the top. They don't want to do that because they want Obama to win on pledged delegates only. They want to test their and your love boy. Tough love, indeed!

Brokaw is a secret admirer of Hillary. he's spreading rumors to damage Obama. LOL!!!

FYI, yesterday would have been a perfect day for Obama to release his Feb. number if it were really good. If anything, I believe his figure is closer to $35 than to $50 MM. Lose faith and hope fast now, you Obamabots! You deserve it!!!

There's no way HRC can win. The only thing we're discussing now is how many voters she'll take out of the GE in her death throws.

user-pic

How do you live with so much bile?

Doesn't it rot you from the inside out?

I guess your bile level is not that far behind.

Childish, petulant, rude.

I believe his figure is closer to $35 than to $50 MM.

Can't let that happen (thanks for reminding me): gotta go send another $250 to BarackObama.com!

Which month are we in now? Your donation does not count. Better spend buying Kool-aid from yoru local grocery. Oh, never mind!

Better Kool-Aid than bile! Just about everything Obama offers is easier to swallow than that which Clinton puts out.

That's because it's hard to mask the flavor of double-talkin' hypocritical pure unadulturated Bullshit.

Just sayin'

I believe his figure is closer to $35 than to $50 MM.

That's a whole lotta Kool-Aid, sucka!

Gee Hillbot so sorry -Obama may be a day late for you but he's definitely not a dollar short!

http://tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/03/obama_campaign_raises_55_milli.php

"Lose faith and hope fast now, you Obamabots! You deserve it!!!"

That is just nasty, and not all that helpful.

But I guess you're right....I have to admit now that Hillary's "Anti-Hope" strategy has been working all along! How inspiring!!

Thanks Schmedly for inspiring me again!!! I think I will make another donation to Obama today!....But first I need to hop in my Jag and go pick up a Latte.

I'm wrong. Your boy raised $55 MM in February! Very impressive. Paris Hilton has a lot of money too. Phil Gramm raised a lot of money. Rudy had a lot of money. Money does not buy love!

Your boy raised $55 MM in February!

Barack Obama's February haul: $55 million

Actually, our man raised the 55 extra large. Your woman ain't buying any love.

Your boy is going down, with all the money. Too much money is bad for you!

Thankfully he's put quite a bit of money into HopePAC to help fellow Democrats win their elections.

Of the two, honestly, which is doing more to ensure that Democrats win the House and Senate too?

Maybe that's why Hillary gave $5 mil. to her campaign -- to keep herself righteous? (chuckle, chuckle)

So you're saying the $100 million dollars that Dictatorstan (Kazakhstan) gave Bill isn't going to buy any influence for that donor? That industry?

He probably should'a thought of that before filling out the money order...

You are not even a particularly good liar. Look who's in a Chicago courtroom today and whe's there taking notes? oh, proably yesterday.

Over on Obama.com, there's been 3 super-delegates announced in the last 2 days.

http://demconwatch.blogspot.com/2008/01/superdelegate-list.html

http://www.barackobama.com/index.php

Please note that Hillary's SD lead is now down to 39.

While there might not be a block of 50 announcing all at once, the trickle of good news is constant.

Victory, be it 3/6/08 or drop by drop, tastes just as sweet.

Oh, since Obama says it's not true, it must not be. I mean, he's not a real politician, is he? He wouldn't lie about anything, would he?

http://www.newslampoon.com

well, seemingly it was important enough to Harold Ickes running Hill's campaign in 2000 that they chastised their opponent for dragging his heels on releasing his return.

As far as releasing it on April 15th- why shouldn't the voters in Wyoming and Mississippi have the benefit of knowing this information? Is it that Hill thinks she won't be able to appeal to lunch bucket Democrats if they know how many millions she and Bill have?

$55,000,000.00

She's stalling because they're only going to release their 2007 returns, and possibly amended previous returns. Note that they've said that they'll release them the week before PA -- which means on tax day.

There probably WAS a stash, contingent upon his doing better in Ohio or Texas. They could've taken that as a mandate, and run with it to put her out of her misery.

Instead, Ohio did what Ohio does (cook the books) so she could win - convincingly.

Does anyone know where Jim Traficante is now?

Let's hope that someone in the Obama camp thinks of that; it's plausible. Not likely, however. More likely they's come out after a bigger win, say, PA, or even NC + IN.

Actually, in this case, money = love.
