Obama Speaking On The Economy Today, With Introduction By Bloomberg
Barack Obama is scheduled to give a big speech on the economy at 9:15 a.m. ET today, a push by his campaign to compete effectively on some of the bread-and-butter issues where Hillary Clinton has been shown to be ahead of him in many polls.
And here's a detail that should get a lot of attention: Obama will be introduced by none other than New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg. It could get a lot of people asking if Bloomberg will be supporting Obama, now that he's completely ruled out any presidential aspirations of his own.

Bloomberg is saying he is still uncommitted, but then why is he introducing Obama? Does he just not like Hillary or something?

A Bloomberg endorsement would give him some great street cred on the economy issue. The speech is happening right in Bloomie's backyard (at Cooper Union's campus in downtown Manhattan) so it's possible he's just being a good host by introducing him.

Bloomberg gave a substantial amount of money to the NY state Republican Party. He wants to be govenor, in the post-Spitzer environment. He is simply a politician. If only Hillary would run for govenor.

Would Bloomberg ever be embraced fully by the Dem party say, if he were an Obama running mate?
Personally, when Obama officially gets the nom, I think Richardson is going to be his mate.

I for the life of me can't think of one speech that obama has given that wasn't good or great. It kind of speaks volumes about the guy.

Bloomy's biggest value, short of an endorsement, is that he is an Independent, and no candidate in this election can win without significant support from Independents.
Whether it helps in PA depends on what kind of play this speech gets, but Obama's economic plan has to harmonize and align with his speech on race --- the two cannot be separated. Ordinary whites and people of color are all hurting economically, and they are looking for solutions, and no easy ones are anywhere in sight. There cannot be any Obama economic plan that benefits one group at the expense of other groups, and in that sense, Obama has set himself a higher bar than the others. It is a tight rope to walk.
The very first thing Obama needs to do -- will do I believe -- is to state the truth, and that is that despite the Bush spin, we are already in a recession. (In this regard he is in line with his economic nemesis, Paul Krugman.) That will be the starting point of his talk, is my guess.
He must also address the mortgage and housing crisis and propose something that is going to help homeowners, not just the financial institutions. McCain has already told homeowners to go eff themselves.

Bloomberg would be the best VP choice for Obama. Strengthens Obama on economy and with Jewish voters. Appeals to independents. A bold move that would work.
