Obama Campaign Confirms They've Received Michigan Revote Plan -- Whacks Hillary

The Obama campaign confirms that they received a proposal today for Michigan revote legislation -- and says they're considering it.

Here's the statement, just out from Obama spokesperson Tommy Vietor, which confirms that the campaign is reviewing the proposal and uses the occasion to whack Hillary...

“Considering the fact that Senator Clinton is currently trying to prevent and delay votes in Texas from being counted because she didn't like the outcome, it's pretty apparent that the Clinton campaign’s views on voting are dependent on their own political interest.

Hillary Clinton herself said in January that the Michigan primary “didn’t count for anything.” Now, she is cynically trying to change the rules at the eleventh hour for her own benefit. We received a very complex proposal for Michigan re-vote legislation today and are reviewing it to make sure that any solution for Michigan is fair and practical. We continue to believe a fair seating of the delegation deserves strong consideration.”

Earlier today the news broke that the Obama camp was saying they wouldn't back the plan without seeing the specifics first. Now they have them.

This proposal, though it hasn't been released publicly, is almost certainly for a revote on June 3rd -- the same plan that Michigan Dems confirmed late last week that they were considering.

Late Update: The Associated Press has some of the details of the proposal -- it approves spending privately raised funds for the election and as expected sets the date for June 3.

Looks like Ickes shot his wad a little early with his comments. Hate when that happens.

Thanks for the visual. :P

Turning out to be a good day for Obama.

Is this the plans that include that democrats and independents who voted in the republican election because they thought their votes would not matter, can not vote in the new primary.

I've read that 35% of the votes in the Republican where these switchover votes.

Seeing as Hillary only received 55% of the vote with only her name on the ballot, it is possible Obama really 'won', and they're trying to count these people out?

I think you mean that excludes the folks that voted in the GOP primary.

I don't see any reason Obama should budge on Michigan until Hillary gives up her Texas shennanigans.

Leverage!

the Clinton campaign’s views on voting are dependent on their own political interest.

Yep. Oh, and did the Clintons ever follow up on those horribly unfair at large caucuses in Nevada where Bill saw cheating and intimidation with his very own eyes? I suppose since she won that one, it was fair after all...

Ben Smith's reporting that Florida has given up on its efforts to have a re-vote.

Oh and some other light reading I found over at Politico:

They tried to resurrect that argument? I had to check the date to be sure it wasn't an old article.

You should make a blog entry for this one.

I can't resist quoting part of it:

Among the allegations: the previously-stated claim that “when [Obama] took over the subcommittee that oversees NATO and Afghanistan and had a chance to follow up on the part of his 2002 speech that argued that Iraq diverted attention from Afghanistan, he failed to hold a single hearing.” [...] It’s worth reiterating: the Foreign Relations Committee’s Subcommittee on European Affairs doesn’t have primary jurisdiction over the campaign in Afghanistan. [...] The Subcommittee on European Affairs doesn’t have secondary jurisdiction over the campaign in Afghanistan. [...] The Subcommittee on European Affairs doesn’t even have tertiary jurisdiction over the campaign in Afghanistan.

and that's not even the end of the story of how lame this attack is.

Florida is a no go according to the state party.

No Fla re-vote...Now what will hillary do? That really hurts her.

Cool, now as Hillary falls further and further behind, we can all look forward to this thing dragging out until at least June.

This re-vote is all she needs to stay in it, despite her winning the nomination being a mathematical impossibility.

I just got this in the mail today from the Yellow Dog (ie Texas) Dems. It reeks of passive aggression...

Below is a statement by Texas Democratic Chairman Boyd Richie regarding the Delegate Selection Process:

The Texas Democratic Party and local Democratic Party organizations around our state are working to turn the enormous opportunity created by the record Democratic turnout experienced on March 4th into a positive outcome for Texas Democrats this fall and in 2010. We are proud of both our Presidential candidates who helped create that turnout. We ask now that the campaigns work with us rather than become an impediment to this extraordinary opportunity to build our party.

On March 4th, our Democratic precinct conventions experienced record turnout of roughly one million precinct convention attendees, a ten-fold increase from the previous high attendance mark. As expected in any record turnout involving hundreds of thousands of people, there were reports of problems caused by long lines and crowded facilities. These problems are not unique to Texas. Similar problems, in proportionately similar numbers, occurred in pure caucus states like Iowa and Nevada.

The overwhelming majority of problems reported in Texas do not affect the legitimacy of delegate allocation. It is important to remember that the precinct conventions are just the first of three steps where delegates and alternates are selected. "Final results" will not be determined until June 6-7 at the Texas Democratic State convention. And at each convention step, Texas Democratic Party rules provide a credentials process to address problems and provide an avenue to register complaints and make formal challenges

For that reason, the Texas Democratic Party will not do as suggested by one campaign and circumvent Party rules to set up an unnecessary, ad hoc "verification" process that could effectively disqualify delegates selected at their precinct conventions after the fact. The Party has never stated any intention to set up a verification process of this nature because Party rules already provide for "verification" through our credentials process. Candidates who wish to disqualify delegates must pursue formal challenges based on evidence filed appropriately in accordance with our party's rules.

The Texas Democratic Party plans to conduct our district and county conventions on March 29 and our June State Convention in accordance with procedures set forth in Texas law and party rules. Both campaigns have the opportunity and responsibility to do their jobs by documenting evidence, filing challenges if warranted, and turning out their delegates in a system that rewards such an effort when final delegate results are determined at the State Convention in June.

Basically: Shove it, Hillary.

Very sweet. Texans can be really awesome sometimes.

Up is down!
Left is right!
Black is white!
Day is night!
Hillary's running for president!

McCain/Clinton '08!!!!!!!!!!!

The Clintons' Campaign is a charade....Sound and fury signifying nothing

Nice try at ignoring the obvious point of the Clinton criticism. NATO is a cornerstone of our military presence in Afghanistan. A laundry list of the various subcommittees that oversee Aghanistan may be pleasing to Obama supporters, but the fact is that it is perectly appropriate for the NATO subcommittee to hold hearings on Afghanistan, since that is currently our biggest military involvement with the orgqnization. Oh, and by the way, it hardly matters if Afghanistan falls under the jurisdiction of his committee, because he hasn't held hearings on any other matter, either. As in not a single hearing. Is there any criticism of Obama that you people find legitimate?

If you can stand to read something critical about your guy, you might try this Salon article.
