Obama Camp Hammers Letter To Pelosi As "Inappropriate" -- Demands Hillary Reject It

Obama spokesperson Bill Burton responds to the letter from top Clinton fundraisers demanding that Nancy Pelosi say publicly that super-dels shouldn't feel bound to support the pledged del count leader...

“This letter is inappropriate and we hope the Clinton campaign will reject the insinuation contained in it. Regardless of the outcome of the nomination fight, Senator Obama will continue to urge his supporters to assist Speaker Pelosi in her efforts to maintain and build a working majority in the House of Representatives.”

The "insinuation" Burton refers to here is the following line from the letter, which links the donors' reference to their own financial support of the DCCC to their demand that Pelosi publicly declare that the super-dels should feel free to be "independent" in their choice:

We have been strong supporters of the DCCC. We therefore urge you to clarify your position on super-delegates and reflect in your comments a more open view to the optional independent actions of each of the delegates at the National Convention in August.

That's what Burton's responding to by saying that Obama, for his part, "will continue to urge his supporters to assist Speaker Pelosi in her efforts to maintain and build a working majority in the House of Representatives."

Meanwhile, Joe Sudbay of Americablog has a very good catch: He points out that in the above line, the fundraisers appear to be urging her to declare that the delegates in general should feel free to make an independent choice -- meaning not just the supers but the pledged dels, too.

Within days of her fantasy trip to Tuzla, she sits down at the same table with Richard Mellon Scaife, the prime mover of a "vast, right wing conspiracy," and pulls the reverend Wright rabbit out of her hat.

The monster meets with the monstrous.

This won't be forgotten. She has revealed herself. All of you Clinton supporters: go take a good look in the mirror and confront yourselves.

Greg Sargent/Josh Marshall

Assuming you are serious and responsible journalists, why don't you push this issue to MSM's and newspapers like NYT, WaPo, Tribune, Globe etc. ?

After all, you claim to have the acutal letter itself. What is the problem in selling it to the MSM ?

One way to answer this blatant arm-twisting is for the voters to show their disgust by voting overwhelmingly for Obama.

Come on, Pennsylvania ! Slash and burn the Monster.

Unlike the Clinton campaign, Pelosi understands arithmetic and will understand that Obama's coattails will easily outperform these self-important influence peddlers in building the DCCC warchest.

Luckily, the party will not be held hostage to those who put Hillary's interests over those of the Democratic party.

Good on you, Barack!

I am opening my wallet.

Is this Hillary trying to buy the nomination outright, or blackmail her way into it? I am confused.

Can we write to Pelosi somewhere? I'd like to encourage her to continue to think for herself and not sell out to the highest or most intimidating bidder. Not that she would...I guess I still have more faith in her than that.

HRC is getting wicked scary. The lies and manipulation are really something. I have been naive.

Those of us who are not her constituencts can write to Nancy Pelosi at:

http://speaker.house.gov/contact/

Thank you, tarnish!

Those of you who are her constituents should be thinking the same thing Pelosi is thinking right now. About what a really well-funded run by Cindy Sheehan could do to Pelosi!

http://www.sheehanforcongress.us/

Suddenly, it's possible. You people have a lot to learn.

Gee Billy, what in the hell are you implying? That all us non-party insiders should sit down and shut-up? That Obama's grassroots campaign and it's fundraising are equivalent to Sheehan's?

I've noticed these kinds of insinuations seem to be your MO (like the Tuzla thread on which you asked if one commenter had been in combat). Why don't you just come out and say what you mean? Are all us political amateurs muddying up the democratic process?

Also, why the new avatar?

Cockroaches meet the Light

Glad to see the Obama camp respond so quickly. Makes me proud to be among the millions of small time donors.

It's their right to not give money, but you would think they would have more dignity than to so blatantly poise their financial support of the party this way. These people obviously don't get that this letter makes them look sleazier than the sleaziest lobbyist.

Why are we voting anyway, if it can all be decided by the super-delegates who support the moneyed folks?

This is what's wrong with big donors. I would be very happy if it were all the small donors, as is the case with the Obama campaign that is funded by small donors -- regular people.

Here is Speaker Pelosi's contact information:

http://www.speaker.gov/contact

Thanks you for your support:)

Senator Obama will continue to urge his supporters to assist Speaker Pelosi in her efforts to maintain and build a working majority in the House of Representatives

Clever, well said.

Good catch.

True, this race is completely over and she doesn't have a prayer in hell. But, it's still good to keep on top of things like this. Every statement, and every letter NEEDS to be parsed and determine if any alternate sinister motives might be present.

This crap is why I really don't care who wins the General Election anymore.

The only fight that matters is that we force people like this who think they own the Democratic Party OUT of the Party.

Let them join the Republican Party which embraces Big Money, NAFTA, and waging war in Iraq while doing nothing on health care or protecting the environment.

Wait, those positions are the same as Hillary's. Come to think of it, let's just have a McCain/Clinton ticket.

McCain and the Republicans desperately need to appeal to women.
The Clintons need to come out of the closet and admit what they always were: Republican-lite. That way they could fly around the world with Saint McCain just like Joe Lieberman.

I'm [expletive] speechless.

Dear Clinton fundraisers, (who seem to be just as tone deaf as Hillary is, but I digress:

Heckuva job fundraising, people. Seriously. Record breaking amounts (if you ignore the Obama fundraising, but he got that all from states that don't count, so it's easy to ignore, actually) What'd ya think of the way Hillary has managed all that money you raked in for her?? Huh? Talk about some fabulous money managing...

And that whole grassroots fundraising thing that Obama has going for him? That your candidate most decidedly doesn't have going for her?

You might want to consider these before you start threatening Speaker Pelosi.

And one other thing: I imagine this threat is going to have just the opposite of the intended effect...So excellent job, people.

And if it weren't for all of us small doners giving to the Obama campaign, they might really be on to something here...

Has anyone noticed the new Rasmussen polls posted showing both Dems down by 10 to McCain? yes,it's early. And everytime I look at McCain speak, all I can think about is how surely the country isn't that stupid (oh wait, I've said that before), but this is clearly the result of the serious in-fighting that we have going on here. Supers - take note.

So now she's threatening to hold the party hostage if she doesn't get her way? AWESOME.

Greg, have you seen a physical copy of this memo? Was it written by cutting and pasting letters from newspaper and magazine articles?

user-pic
Was it written by cutting and pasting letters from newspaper and magazine articles?

Priceless.

And it was probably signed in crayolas.

There is a simple response to this: Pelosi could line up with a dozen key superdelegates and openly endorse Obama.

The lying is out of control. It is become pathalogical. Carl Berstein sums it up pretty well: Hillary lies with terrible ease.

No more Bush/Clinton Barony, thanks. And Chelsea better get used to questions about Monica. If this goes on, Bill's ugly womanizing will be fair game. Chelsea is an adult and campaign spokesperson last time I checked.

Pax,
M.

May I note: the real point of the letter is probably to pre-position Pelosi as a partisan in the public mind, so that when she does come out the effect is blunted.

Three-dimensional chess.

It's crappy 3-dimensional chess, as the letter likely did more damage to Hillary's reputation within the party, and hurt her standing with other superdelegates than it did to paint Pelosi as an anti-Clinton partisan.

They're not playing chess, they're playing chicken with an oncoming train. They know the path that they're on is a losing one, but they can't stop themselves.

DENOUNCE AND REJECT

Wait, those positions are the same as Hillary's. Come to think of it, let's just have a McCain/Clinton ticket..

Hell, the way Bill and Hillary have said McCain is so awesome, and the only other candidate in the race fit to be CIC besides her, I'm beginning to think it's been discussed.

The Speaker email address is currently rejecting emails as undeliverable (http://www.speaker.gov/contact).

Her other email (Web Site: www.house.gov/pelosi E-mail: sf.nancy@mail.house.gov) will only accept comments from constituents.

Phone: 202-225-4965
Fax: 202-225-8259

Send a fax or letter or better yet, phone.

I just used her non-constituent web contact form. Seemed to work.

What does Burton want? The fund raisers want the super delegates to remain independent. Does Burton want the super delegates to be dependent? I thought we already answered this question. Pelosi should have kept her mouth shut.

Hillary will run as an independent. Just watch.

I've had a similar concern. She seems to feel the same sense of entitlement and scorn towards the uppity left of the party that inspired Lieberman to do the same last cycle.

It wouldn't surprise me at all.

Not to worry, it won't happen. She needs the backing of the Dems in the Senate and too many of her organization (DLC) like power much more than her to leave with her and screw their own careers.

At some point, this is now Clinton fighting for her life -- not about the nomination, but about some way of using this run to boost her career post-primary. The long it plays out, the bigger she has to win to make it worthwhile considering the damage to her own career.

Some big money people are waking up to a new world in which they cannot always whisper behind the scenes and get their way -- and it must be a real shock to them.

This fascinating episode shows how important it will be, not just for Obama, but also for a reformed and reenergized Democratic Party to rely on masses of medium and small donors going forward. Pelosi, one hopes, will not be intimidated in the least. She and many other elected officials and candidates are likely to see the possibilities in the new world of broad engagement and masses of regular donations that is taking shape in this election. Imagine a political system in which elected office holders did not have to spend all of their time at fundraisers with mega-fat-cats! They might actually be able to do something worthwhile in office.

Cnn.com has now picked up the story and has a .pdf of the original letter. Clearly someone is spreading this around the media. I wouldn't be surprised if we see this making the rounds on the evening news shows tonight.

In CNN political ticker, You should see all those moms rooting for Hillary and screaming for Nancy's Blood . Talk about Cult!!! Jeez!

It's now front page center on Drudge...this should get interesting.

Exhibit A in charge for conspiracy to extort a public official.

The woman has no shame. none what-so-ever.

Honestly, better than writing would be going to the DCCC site and contributing $50. That's the organization that's being threatened.

https://dccc.org/page/contribute

Timing matters here. I was probably going to kick $50 to the DCCC sooner or later. I'll do it now to make a point.

Best of all, contribute, and then write a letter to Pelosi saying that you did so specifically to help defend the party against intimidation by big donors.

Obama needs to start a Howard Dean-style push for the DCCC. Urge all his supporters to contribute to the DCCC, with contributions all ending in some strange amount like .86 (because Hillary is willing to 86 the chances of Democratic Congressional candidates).

Hillary will run as McCain'ts VP and she will be ready on DAY ONE!

McCain't/Clintons '08
(You get THREE CIC's on day one!)

I'm beginning to wonder...do you think the Clintons actually did kill Vince Foster?

user-pic

Wow...this used to be a liberal blog. Now we have people suggesting that Clinton will run as a Republican VP and raising the old right-wing nutcase conspiracy theory that the Clintons killed Vince Foster? What next? Did they personally take Saddam's WMDs to Syria? Order the shooting of Randy Weaver and his family eight months before taking office? I hope things come back to normal here, at least after June.

user-pic

Best...comment...this week. You should send that one to Letterman.

How many people remember why we have superdelegates in the first place? They're supposed to vote their conscience, for the person they believe will do the best job in November--like caucus voters--without necessarily voting the way primary voters did. The whole point of superdelegates is to be able to overrule the primary voters, if the vote is close enough. That way we won't get an unelectable candidate (which we have in the past).

In this case, neither candidate can win without the superdelegates. I hope they choose wisely. If one candidate clearly has more support from the voters, and that candidate is electable, they should vote for the leader. They should only go against the voters if they believe that the leading candidate is not electable.

Wow. Hillary used to rail against the vast right wing conspiracy and now she sits down with Richard Scaife Mellon to chat about Obama's church-going.

Wow. Hillary's husband tried to dedicate the last 2 years of his term to a national dialgue on race and got nowhere. Now it seems like the only time Hillary's people want to talk about race is when they have a complaint about reverse discrimination.

Wow. Hillary used to be against the politics of personal destruction but now has hung her candidacy on slurs against Obama's christianity, his patriotism, and his race.

Wow. Hillary used to trumpet women's rights but now her money thugs overtly threaten the higherst ranking elected woman in the history of the republic. Like Bill said, everyone who speaks is towing the campaign's line.

I hope things get back to normal after June too. But normal looks a whole lot different now that Hillary squandered the greatest set of advantages a nominee ever had through a lazy and incompetent campaign and is using the kitchen sink to try to claw back into a race from which she's been mathematically eliminated. Everyone keeps saying that this is O.K. because Obama would have faced this crap in the general election anyway. All I can say about that is it's a lot different to get stabbed in the face by your brother than to get stabbed in the back by your adversary. And remeber how they said Gore opened the door on Willie Horton and Kerry opened the door on Swifboat? Well, it'll be the same song from the McCain campaign when they go after Obama in September and October.

What strikes me is this is this new angle that ALL delegates should be able to vote anyway they wish at the convention. In primary states the party picks people to represent the will of the voters. Is Hillary suggesting they betray those voters? In caucus states (like mine) we make a pledge, in public, to support a certain candidate. Is Hillary suggesting that I betray my pledge? What kind of people does she think democrats are?

"Nice Party ya got here, Madame Speaker. Be a shame if anything were to . . . happen to it."

Thugs. Just rich thugs. The worst kind of thugs.

But what else do you expect from maxed out fatcats for Hillary? Can't donate more to her, stymied from their clever plan to run commericals for her under guise of a 527 by that silly law. Nothing to do but throw a Veruca Salt tantrum and make threats because they can't buy the election for their girl.

This would be an excellent time to make a donation to the DCCC, Obama supporters.

I'm getting a little tired of people lecturing us about "why we have superdelegates in the first place." I don't care what the line of thinking was in 1984. In 2008 the nominee will go to the winner of the primaries and caucuses.

It is lunacy to suggest any thing other than that outcome. The Clintons will simply be unable to convince 397 superdelegates PLUS the 100-150 additional superdelegates that would be needed to compensate for Obama's lead to overturn the will of the people. It WILL NOT happen. They WILL NOT be able to find those votes. SO all of this super delegate talk is just about keeping the thought of a victory in the minds of the people willing to throw their money away in a campaign destined to lose. It is surely the most pathetic thing I've ever seen.

Does anybody actually believe that Hillary responds at all. I don't. I would be surprised if she came out and denounced this. If she does that, she is basically throwing her big money donors --the donors she would have to have if she somehow got the nomination--under the bus. Publicly.

Or, am I wrong on that? Either way, how she responds goes very far in the minds of voters and Supers where her loyalties lie. Somehow, I think she picks her donors and her ego over the party.

You gotta be kidding, right ? Who the hell do you think forced these fatcat bast..rds to send this letter in the first place ?

Obama is playing smart here by calling her out.

I think I have figured out why The Harpy of Hooterville is staying in the race.

She and Big Daddy are going for a world record....the most screwups ever in a single campaign

HuffPo says Nancy is standing her ground.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/03/26/clinton-donors-object-to-_n_93552.html

You Go, Girl (the real Girl).

From the above linked Huffpo piece:

In response, Clinton spokesman Phil Singer said: "Few have done more to build the Democratic Party than Bill and Hillary Clinton. The last thing they need is a lecture from the Obama campaign."

Well, that's settled. Bill and Hillary are not sorry because they think they own this party. We know where their loyalties lie. With themselves.

Quote: "In response, Clinton spokesman Phil Singer said: 'Few have done more to destroy the Democratic Party than Bill and Hillary Clinton. . . .'"

/fixed

Billy, to learn about extortion I go to watch the Godfather. I thought we all want something better from our politics.

Josh Marshall in the latest TPMTv bit wonders why the Democrats aren't going after 100 Years War McSame..going up with TV?

I suspect he knows the answer. The Clintons .the Clintons..The Clintons

The DNC has no money and now the Clintons threaten to take their marbles and go home

The best thing that could happen to the Democrats, even better than winning the General, would be to rid themselves of the Clintons and their Restorationists

"Few have done more to build the Democratic Party than Bill and Hillary Clinton. The last thing they need is a lecture from the Obama campaign."

Just when you think they can't go any more tone-deaf, they bust out with another one. Even supposing you accept that Bill and Hillary have helped build rather than tear down the party by running it to the hawkish right....even if you agree with everything they did from banking deregulation to the Iraq war...I think I can easily name a dozen historical figures that are vastly more important to the party on simple pragmatic grounds.

Amazing. It's not just entitlement. It's delusions of grandeur.

Put Hillary, Rush, and operation chaos to bed early, Pennsylvania. Don't make Indiana and NC clean up your mess.

JohnMcCSF:

The best thing that could happen to the Democrats, even better than winning the General, would be to rid themselves of the Clintons and their Restorationists
And the entire DLC, too. (or are they one in the same?)

Anyone know who those people were who signed up on Clinton's letter to Pelosi? Are they part of Emily's List or are they lobbyists?

Although I realize my opinion doesn't count in the democratic party that the Clintons have built, I have to echo everyone on this thread, that the picture of Hillary Clinton with Richard Scaife, as she was continuing to beat the Wright drum along with the Republican attack machine, was truly shocking. The thing is, any good feeling I had about voting for Hillary as a pioneering female candidate was also ended. If Clinton does succeed in wresting the nomination from Obama, I will vote for her. I'm not stupid enough to vote McCain. But I will do it with a sour taste in my mouth. It just makes me really sad--I really have to ask why--especially in Pennsylvania, where she has the edge and presumably had the momentum--that she continues to employ Rovian tactics. And I would ask that of Emily's List, the "top 50" who threatened Pelosi, and her fervent supporters on this site and others. You support the politics of Karl Rove and Richard Scaife and call yourself a democrat?!? It is still unbelievable to me.

Those who want to contact Pelosi and make your voices heard can do it at:

http://www.house.gov/pelosi/contact/contact.html

About what a really well-funded run by Cindy Sheehan could do to Pelosi!

I'm sure Cindy Sheehan is a huge Hillary supporter, since she voted for the war that killed her son.

So, Pelosi should sacrifice principle to protect her own political skin? I guess that is what Hillary would do....

No she did kill Vince Foster but I know the Clintons know who did.

The super-delegates exist to save the Party when it is in danger.

It's in danger, and it is time for the super-delegates to step in and stop the further degradation of the Party's chances in the Presidential election.

This kind of strong arming would make Cheney blush...if Cheney could actually get blood to his cheeks that is.

user-pic

Oh, the Clingto-the-old money thugs have so far threatened to undermine the DNC and now the DCCC, as well as the majority of the voters' who have chosen Obama delegates.
Will the SCCC be next? Probably not, since Chuck Schumer heads up the SCCC, and Schumer has already allowed Hillary to hide nineteen of her most egregious [pandering to foreign corporations] legislative proposals under his name.

I think we are watching what happens when democracy effectively challenges the 'decider' power of these money-playing insiders. Those insiders are willing to tear down the party rather than give up their control. They adopt right-wing tactics, blackmail, Richard Schaife and whatever else might save their porky bacon ways.

We are getting a big screen view of what Hillary really represents, and it certainly is not democracy of, by and for the people. As painful as it is to watch this slow motion train wreck, in the longer run, this big screen educates citizens in a way that could assure that our collective future remains a democracy.

Don't know if anyone's still checking this, but someone at Kos did some legwork on these people. It's essential reading to understand who has been funding the party. And some of these people are NOT going to be funding Cindy Sheehan...

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/3/27/912/91904/66/485037

Those of you who are her constituents should be thinking the same thing Pelosi is thinking right now. About what a really well-funded run by Cindy Sheehan could do to Pelosi! ...Suddenly, it's possible. You people have a lot to learn.

This strikes me as a fantasy for numerous reasons:

(1) Cindy Sheehan -- nice lady though she is -- is not a particularly brilliant light.

(2) San Franciscans covet "their" Speaker of the House: the cache and the generous servings of pork.

(3) San Franciscans have a history of sticking with established politicians, and Nancy is an institution.

(4) You far over-estimate S.F.'s red-wing reputation. (I left the city four years ago because at 55K a year I couldn't afford the rent! It's a town for the well-to-do.)

(5) Word that Cindy was taking cash from one of the rich dudes who blackmailed Nancy would NOT be a campaign plus (who likes blackmail for cry-sakes?).

6) What would it say about Cindy to take revenge money in the first place? The end justifies the means? That would sell.

(7) How many of those rich donors have any sympathy for Cindy's politics? I should think probably very few if they support the Demo-Republican Hillary.

(8) Nancy's district includes Pacific Heights, the Marina, and Sea Cliff. There's plenty of dough in those neighborhoods to counter any outsiders interference, let me tell you.

(9) What fat-cat donor would waste money on Cindy Sheehan, to begin with?

10) Sheehan's share of the vote? 30% tops.

Well, I could go on. My point? Nancy does NOT have to kowtow to threats from the Hillary camp. So what else do we people have to learn exactly?

So Messiah Obama now thinks it's wrong for Americans who are political donors to inform their beneficiaries the conditions under which they will or will not continue their financial support?

Wow. Just wow.
