New York Republican Leader: Impeach Spitzer If He Doesn't Quit

Pressure is intensifying on Gov. Eliot Spitzer (D-NY) to resign his office in light of reports that he'd paid for meetings with prostitutes. Assembly Minority Leader James Tedisco (R-NY) told New York's CBS 2 that unless Spitzer resigns, Assembly Republicans will call for impeachment proceedings.

One catch: Assembly Democrats currently enjoy a 108-42 majority. So if an impeachment were to get off the ground, it would require a lot of Dems to be eager to throw Spitzer overboard.

Throw him out. Laws are laws. He broke them and being governor of New York does not make him King of New York.

Throw him under the bus. No deal for his resignation. He should resign without a deal in place to avoid jail time. Then I hope they throw the book at him.

Doesn't it seem a bit disengenuous for a REPUBLICAN to be so willing and ready to Impeach a Governor after being caught in a SEX story but that same Republican would deny Impeachment hearings - after the lies (war, judges, Enron, etc) and destruction of our country's rule of law in the White House and elsewhere, that the President of Vice President should even be LOOKED INTO.

Thank You!

"Throw him out. Laws are laws. He broke them and being governor of New York does not make him KING of New York."

Too bad you didn't suggest the same thing for our current President and Vice President.

So New York turns out to be more sanctimonious than Idaho.

"Too bad you didn't suggest the same thing for our current President and Vice President."

Who said I didn't?

There are laws and then there are laws. A victimless morals offense involving consenting adults which is punishable under state law as a misdemeanor is not quite on par with, say, bribery. And while the legal jeapordy goes up when you throw in a federal Mann Act violation, the moral gravity does not.

I couldn't care less whether David Vitter, Larry Craig, Ted Haggard, or Eliot Spitzer fucked a hooker -- straight or gay. The hypocrisy factor is the only point that matters to me. That's why Spitzer's actions -- since he rode into office on a law-and-order horse -- bother me.

Incidentally, the federal sentencing guidelines may very well not call for any jail time at all for a Mann Act offense of this sort. The real punishment will likely turn out to be public shaming and obliteration of his career.

Here's the part I found chilling:

"...investigators conducting a routine examination of suspicious financial transactions reported to them by banks found several unusual movements of cash involving the governor of New York, several officials said."

How routine? What constitutes "suspicious" and who decides what transactions banks report? Do they err on the side of privacy or of "security"? I think I can guess the answer to that one...

I understand the tools law enforcement feels it needs to combat drug dealing, terrorism financing, etc. But how wide a net is being cast here?

user-pic

I'm not 100 percent sure because its been a long time since I worked for financial institutions; however, if you do a cash transaction of 10k or more, it has to be reported to the irs. From what it sounds like the buffoon was doing is that he was doing 10k or so cash transactions that ultimately got reported. As the going rate was around 5k per hour you can see how he got to 10k. So, he set up shell companies to "cover his tracks," which only made the irs more suspicious based on the cash transactions and viola you have an investigation. What's funny is that he probably brought down the prostitution ring as well based on the cash transactions and investigation. Too funny, maybe he should add this ring to his resume as well. What an IDIOT!!!

"law enforcement" casts a net far wider than you can imagine.
Go find out what the NSA is sifting through. Everything. They datamine everything.

If they can "direct" their search to a city in which they detect "unusual chatter", how hard can it be to zero in on the biggest rising-star Democratic Governor?

They cast a global net, and we're all caught up in it.

Kind of sucks for Mr. Law and Order, but I guess it could be worse. At least it wasn't a male prostitute and Spitzer is no gay-bashing, morality-legislating, sanctimonious social conservative. I tend to think prostitution should be legal anyway.

I'll support Spitzer's impeachment after both Larry Craig and David Vitter resign. Until then, the GOP can take a long cool drink of STFU.

I'll support Spitzer's impeachment when both Bush and Cheney are out of the White House and wearing orange jumpsuits.

Spitzer has to go, and he has to go soon, but I'll be damned if it's due to threats of impeachment from the Republicans.

user-pic

It's not just sex; it's also illegal financial activity.

But then maybe the Bush Justice Dept won't indict him(yeah right).

The hypocrisy of Republicans never ceases to amaze me. Sen. David Vitter is still in office, having absolutely no problems at all, from what I can tell. Certainly, there's been no big push by his fellow Republicans for his resignation.

And Vitter was one of those nauseating 'family values' supporters - still is, I suppose. He'd demanded that President Clinton resign for infidelity, in fact. But for himself, patronizing prostitutes - female prostitutes, at least - is just no big deal. And neither his constituents, nor his fellow Republicans, nor the party leadership have any problems at all with his continuing in the U.S. Senate.

Hypocrisy, thy name is Republican!

The latest in a long string of examples of why we should elect more women to public office.

It's not fair to put the voters of NY through this. He needs to resign. He is responsible for his behavior. He knew prostitution was not legal. He knew the cash would be laundered. And he staked his reputation on being a straight shooter. (no pun intended) Even though it seems murky how the feds have brought down another Dem governor, still, he needs to fight this battle without the voters and the state of NY being subjected to a long and messy situation. I say this as a former NYer, who retains great affection for the state.

user-pic

he'd paid for meetings with prostitutes

Ha. I like that euphemism. What, was "Kristen" giving him a PowerPoint presentation?

You have to wonder how NY is going to run with Democrat Patterson as Governor, and that Nut Job republican president of the state senate as the Lt Governor, because THAT is what happens if Spitzer leaves. I can imagine terrible gridlock.

He should have resigned as soon as he was caught spying on Bruno. How stupid do you have to be to hand your worst enemy a gift like that? Spitzer's ascension to the governor's mansion was a perfect example of the Peter Principle, and the Republicans have done us an unintentional favor by finishing him off.

user-pic

Actually, DemDave, Patterson used to be the minority leader in the Senate, so at least he and Bruno are used to each other. I can hardly imagine relations being any worse than Spiter/Bruno.

The real problem is, the Dems were one seat away from taking control of the Senate, but that was only assuming Patterson was in the presiding chair to break a tie. If Patterson ascends to the Gov chair, Dems will need 2 more seats to get an outright majority and oust ol' Bruno.

Of course, Spitzer's bonehead (pun intended) move will not make picking up those 2 seats any easier.

Good points ThereP as always, I agree that hypopcrisy and the general nature of knowing that you were braking the law is the point. Maybe we should see some articles in main stream media asking the question of whether legalized and safe prostitution(in medical terms for both parties) should be re-examined. I am not interested in the moral ethics regarding whether this occupation but more interested in dubious nature for which it has the illegal tag in most areas of our country. Mr. Spitzer was by all means a straight shooter which is why he attained the title of NY Gov relatively early in his career. He should propably resign but I respect his privacy and completly expect him to resign, unlike the Vitter and Graig, so that he can try to rebuild the trust that he lost with his wife and children. I do not envy him but should he resign, I can conclude that the trust that was placed in his hands was fair and that will leave him with what little integrity someone who holds public office can under the circumstances.
Could legalized prostitution safe our country for a variety of economic and social problems relevant to our contemporary situation?

Let's have just a TINY bit of coherence and consistency. And just a LITTLE bit of attention to the things that actually matter to the governance of the country.

I don't really want to be dragged into the sex lives of public figures (or really, anyone else having consensual sex with another adult). I don't care whether the sex is straight, gay, 'adulterous,' etc. It's just not other people's business.

I think the witch hunt of Gary Hart (dating myself here) was stupid, and that the whole business with Bill Clinton was beyond stupid. I also think that Vitter and Craig are jerks, and evidently Spitzer has some major disconnects. But so what? What do their sexual 'indiscretions' have to do with anything?

And why is it that these things are more important to the electorate than political corruption, overt lying, influence peddling, and failure to uphold the Constitution?

Finally, there is the blatant double standard: Why do the Republicans get away with being SHOCKED, I say SHOCKED about Spitzer--and calling for his impeachment if he does not resign--while shrugging off the conduct of Vitter and Craig?

Vitter sets the norm for non-gay Republicans and Craig got a life-time appreciation reward in Idaho. Go figure.

Anyway, these do give substantive means for Democrats to show THEY are the party of values. Except that they need to do a pretty substantial purge of elected members to make it real. In the meantime, it is good to see an occasional example made of a well-deserving politician.

There should be something more serious than Pussy involved to justify impeachment!

First, Spitzer is out by resignation or by impeachment. I read elsewhere that his resignation is anticipated this afternoon. Next, though, is the question of who else is involved? First, obviously his state police escorts were likely involved and need appropriate professional sanction and maybe even complicit charges if Spitzer is charged. Also, the affidavit reports "more than 5000 telephone calls" and "more than 6,000 emails". I am sure that includes more elected officials than just Spitzer.

See redacted affidavit at Affidavit courtesy of MSNBC.

Does anybody think that Spitzer and the democrats in general could make a case this type of needless persecution both public and private is distracting us from much larger issues invloing political corruption? I mean Rick Renzi has not hung up his boots as of yet, William Jefferson has not either, I can think of a whole list of others which TPM has covered in depth, but seriously whose crimes are a greater threat to public trust, someone having sex or someone bribing, laundering, violating ethics laws, and there oaths upon taking office. It would seem a slippery slope to say the least to persecute someone publically simply because it sells more papers!

user-pic

umm... WHAT laws has he broken?
Has he even been charged???

This is a lot of fuss over???

Of course frequenting a prostitute is not something I would do, advocate, nor usually condone. And, given Mr. Spitzer's history of prosecuting a "prostitution ring" his actions speak loudly of hypocrisy.

Who is pushing this prosecution? Why hasn't he been charged with a crime? Could this be a case of a politically motivated (republican) US Attorney? That's never happened, has it???

Why should Spitzer resign? Did David Vitter resign? Did Dick Cheney resign after conning the nation into an illegal war that has killed more Americans than Osama bin Laden? What if Spitzer just ate some crow and hung in their (like Vitter and Larry Craig -- Who even talks about them anymore?) And if the Republicans then impeach Spitzer, doesn't that raise the question of who ELSE ought to be impeached for far more serious crimes and misdemeanors?
