McCain: Hagee Assured Us "His Words Were Taken Out Of Context"

John McCain has now made his position clearer on John Hagee: He stands by Hagee's support, even if his words have created the "impression" of being anti-Catholic.

Think Progress reports that McCain was asked today about some of Hagee's inflammatory comments about the Catholic Church, during an appearance on Bill Bennett's radio show.

"Well, obviously I repudiate any comments that are anti-Semitic or anti-Catholic, racist, any other," McCain said. "And I condemn them and I condemn those words that Pastor Hagee apparently — that Pastor Hagee wrote. I will say that he said that his words were taken out of context, he defends his position. I hope that maybe you'd give him a chance to respond."

McCain also added a defense of Hagee: "I will say, I'd like to say on his behalf, he's been a very strong supporter of the state of Israel and when we were doing the No Surrender tour, he came and spoke on behalf of not surrendering in Iraq."

Saying that the End Times are coming soon and all the residents of Israel will either convert or perish is not exactly my idea of being a very strong supporter of Israel.

McCain also added a defense of Hagee: "I will say, I'd like to say on his behalf, he's been a very strong supporter of the state of Israel and when we were doing the No Surrender tour, he came and spoke on behalf of not surrendering in Iraq."

Thats cause he is a crazy mofo who thinks it will lead to the rapture.

Yes, well Farrakhan also said his words were taken out of context. Obama didn't use that as an excuse to avoid denouncing him. McCain needs to come up with a better one than that.

Someday I'd like to think that people will realize that the philo-Semitism of the born-again Christian community is nothing more than a form of condescension which is not at all dissimilar from the European condescension toward colonized peoples which was assumed under the mantle of "White Man's Burden".

But I'm not holding my breath.

just keep feeding out the rope as long as they will keep taking it. this idiocy is almost too good to be true.... just make sure that when they get to the end of the rope that we give it one almighty yank.

Ooooh, I can't wait for the general when we can finally sink our teeth into McCain.

I'd like to hear Hagee's explanation.

I believe John McCain just handed the man a shovel. Let's see how much deeper he can dig this hole.

isn't the best way out of a hole to just keep digging? oh, wait... that's not right :)

Bigotry continues to find a home in the GOP, not unlike the camps along the Afghan border.

The GOP has suffered from generations of choosing their sisters as the mothers o' dar kidz and their brothers as the pater familias . . .

The election is the folk registered as DEM's to loose. The presumptive REP nominee is coming in fourth. Obama has more ballots cast for him. Clinton has more ballots cast for her. Other DEMs voted for in the primaries have more votes.

The DEMs just gotta show up. Failure to recognize this . . . If there was only a flesh and blood Democrat left in the race.

In exactly what context do we put calling the Catholic Church a "great whore" in order to make it somehow not offensive, even to a long-lapsed Catholic like me?
