Hillary Raising Money Off Calls For Her To Leave Race

This is intriguing -- the Hillary campaign is trying to fundraise off calls for her to get out of the race. In her latest fundraising email, Hillary writes:

Have you noticed the pattern?

Every time our campaign demonstrates its strength and resilience, people start to suggest we should end our pursuit of the Democratic nomination.

Those anxious to force us to the sidelines aren't doing it because they think we're going to lose the upcoming primaries. The fact is, they're reading the same polls we are, and they know we are in a position to win.

While snowballing calls for her to exit are the last thing Camp Hillary would want, her campaign will have to hope that they'll at least be able to use them to energize her most loyal supporters.

Here’s a more accurate headline:

“Clinton Campaign Trying to Fundraise Off (Insert Headline of the Day): Says to Donors, ‘Jesus Christ, We Need Money And How!’”

This letter seems to be in gross error. For instance this paragraph reads...

"Every time our campaign demonstrates its strength and resilience, people start to suggest we should end our pursuit of the Democratic nomination."

It actually SHOULD read...

"Every time our campaign demonstrates its weakness and failures, people start to suggest we should end our pursuit of the Democratic nomination."

Where's an editor when you need one?

So let me get this straight, losing all but 2 of the last 15 races equals strength and resilience?

Okay...

Excuse me, she lost all but 2 of the last 17 races, not 15. My mistake.

Her "most loyal supporters" are no longer relevant. Her only chance of winning is if she takes the overwhelming majority of the remaining undecided superdelegates, who, by definition, are not her most loyal supporters.

Every time they employ Scaife and Drudge to smear the other campaign; Democrats get pissed. Shame on them.

Greg:

Do you have any way of learning what the size of her ad buy is in Pennsylvania?

Unfortunately, it is only those who are NOT reading the polls and doing the math who will be misled by this pitch.

Who was in the news a week or so ago saying Clinton was consistently "misleading" the voters? I think they were right.

Oh and that email (plus the Halperin article) underscore just how divorced from reality Clinton has become. This is actually sad.

She wants to raise $3 million by the end of the reporting period Monday. If that's her March goal she's in worse financial trouble than anyone thought.

Those polls--I'm not sure they say what you think they say....

No, Hillary, people ask you to quit every time you endorse McCain over Obama or put yourself ahead of the party.

Subtext of the call: "Hi, this is Hillary Clinton, I've already lost the race, but I need your money to further my disasterous attacks on Obama and assure a McCain win in the General Election. By doing so I will position myself to run for President in 2012 and, once again, destroy the hopes of whoever ends up being the Democratic Party's leading nominee. Let's face it; I won't ever be picked because I'm a big fat liar who half the country totally hates. But if I can't have it, no Democrat should. This is owed to me, and you have to give me your money so I can prove how much it is owed to me. I have to run now, the sniper fire is coming in hot and heavy, but donate all you can, kitchen sinks are expensive."

All this stuff of people calling Hillary to quit the race and she's way ahead in Pennsylvania (see today's ARG poll)? This is silly. People are trying to portray her like Mike Huckabee's hapless campaign against John McCain after Romney quite, but he had NO chance whatsover of winning. Hillary does in fact have at least a small chance of winning. People like Leahy calling for her to quit are simply trying to throw her under the bus.

The truth is Hillary succeeded in having her big comeback in Texas, Ohio and Rhode Island and has repeatedly proved that she's not done for and she's clearly ahead in Pennsylvania. It's easy to see how she 'owes' it to her supporters to keep going. And until a full settlement comes out of the Florida/Michigan delegate mess (which she won both of), I think there's little chance this race will be settled. Consider how she's won CA, NY, NJ, TX, OH, FL (technically) and many other states, yet she's treated like she's won just 1 or 2 states.

Let me make it clear: I'm no Hillary supporter, but I marvel at the hypocrisy of those who call for her to step down.

Um, sorry, hate to break it to you, but Hillary lost Texas.

Better luck next time.

Hillary succeeded in having her big comeback in Texas (...) Consider how she's won (...) TX
Obama won Texas.

The response to her pleas is what should intrigue you Greg!

With superdelegates falling slowly but steadily and both Gallup and Pew confirming that Obama is blowing the race wide open or close to it, the intriguing question becomes

When will those remaining Clintons' cash cows not maxed out already cut off the spigot?

Along those lines, I received, via an Obama listerv, an email forwarding just such a plea from The Last Big Dog, Mr. Hillary

The sender suggested the group members make a Special Contribution in response

Think I will!

I had a feeling when I started reading articles in the news about questioning whether Hillary was broke or not -- if this wasn't one of her strategies to GET MORE MONEY to come in. Now we know it was.

One of these days, her supporters will come to the realization that Hillary has lost and is just getting as much money as possible for her NEXT run for office.

LOL

When will Hillary be going to the restroom? or eating Sandwich??!?!?!

isn't she becoming more and more irrelevant to everyone but TPM these days?

Well, there's a sucker born every minute- she may as well milk them to pay off her campaign debts.

Those anxious to force us to the sidelines aren't doing it because they think we're going to lose the upcoming primaries.

Sorry, that's exactly why they're doing it.

Hell, you guys still think you're going to lose:

Mrs. Clinton’s advisers acknowledged that it would be difficult for her to catch up in the race for pledged delegates even if she succeeded in winning Ohio and Texas in three weeks and Pennsylvania in April. They said the Democratic Party’s rules, which award delegates relatively evenly among the candidates based on the proportion of the vote they receive, would require her to win by huge margins in those states to match Mr. Obama in delegates won through voting.

Nancy Pelosi should use the threating letter from Hillary's Money Goons to raise money for the DNC.

Perhaps, she can contact the Pelosi 20, and misspeak on Bosnia a bit more. Separating fools from their money is always possible, but separating money from those without money is foolish wishful thinking.

Clinton's the inevitable campaign remains foolish.

If her campaign weren't so negative and hellbent on destroying Obama, no one would care if she stayed in the race.

Beating him on the issues didn't work so now she is doing the Republicans' dirty work. Amazing.

user-pic

Politicians always insist they are staying in until the moment before they pull out.

If the poll trends continue and the money dries up she will be gone. I expect it to happen the day after Indiana and NC.

You should never take fundraising emails too seriously, of course, but one thing this seems to be doing is trying to reinforce the victim narrative--she's a strong woman and people are trying to bring her down. They're afraid of her strength and the only thing against her are people trying to push her aside. It's framing the whole thing in Hillary-against-the-world, much like the idea that men were picking on her at the debates or the media is against her...

Going for Broke, is EXCELLENT NEWS FOR HILLARY!!!

I wonder if most Obama supporters can imagine how angry it makes Hillary supporters when people seem to gang up and demand that she quit the race. With a potential victory in Pennsylvania ahead, it only reminds Hillary supporters of all the calls for her capitulation in the weeks before her victories in Texas and Ohio. If the shoe were on the other foot and Obama were a small percentage behind in the delegate count, and he had several potential victories ahead of him in the contest, imagine how his supporters would react to repeated calls for him to quit. Many of Hillary's supporters are women. Think of how women in general feel when ganged up upon. It doesn't tend to make them want to stop fighting. Quite the opposite.

As for Hillary using the calls for her to quit as a way to raise money, good for her. And I for one am sending her more money. Many Obama surrogates have been calling for her to quit, and Obama himself has come very close to doing the same. On the day that he actually comes out and makes that suggestion himself, watch donations to Clinton spike sharply.

Hey if she's willing to debate substantive issues, leave her in. But if she was ahead by as much as Obama was and Obama was using a kitchen sink strategy, what would you be saying to us right now?

Which is why I donate to Obama every time one of these faux-victim fundraising emails come out.

"Have you noticed the pattern?"

Yeah, I've noticed. In my area there's a department store that has had a this-time-you-won't-believe-how-big sale every single weekend for the last thirty-seven years, as long as I've lived here.

It seems that every time anything happens that is remotely related to the campaign, Clinton has a fire-sale request for donations. Why are people throwing good money after bad?

Probably for the same reason we are letting our soldiers die now so previously killed soldiers will not have died in vain.

Yet another self-indulgent act when she can't win--asking people to throw good money after bad that could better be directed toward the DNC, DCCC, DSCC, and the general election, help Democrats take power.

If Party and Country were put first what could we do? Stop climate change, fix the economy, bring us health care for all, end the Iraq War, redirect our energies to Afghanistan and northern Pakistan where the terrorists are, save the Supreme Court, etc.

But, it's all about HER.

user-pic

he truth is Hillary succeeded in having her big comeback in Texas

I see I was already beaten to the punchline on this, but I'll add my agreement - Obama won Texas.

Fair and square.

Heck, I'll pay her to get out of the race.

She's killing the democratic party--and its chances for taking the presidency in 08. Her Campaign team is providing the McCain team with SwiftBoat bullet points for attacks on Mr. Obama.
I don't know, I would pay her to leave the race, but she may have damaged the Democratic Party so deeply, I just hope it isn't too late.

But lest we forget, It's all about Hillary.
What the people want is so last century--this is
supposed to be the Hillary Century--we just don't yet realize it.

To paraphrase a young John Kerry:

Who wants to be the last person to donate for a mistake?

very good!

Interesting item in today's Chicago Sun-Times - note the bit about Elizabeth Edwards:
http://www.suntimes.com/news/sneed/865494,CST-NWS-SNEED28.article

I can't believe John Edwards would support Hillary--she's represents almost everything about politics that he's against.

John Edwards needs to step up and endorse Obama now. I'm sure Hillary promised him something, but who can take her at her word--she'll just tell him that she misspoke.

For the good of the party, Mr Edwards, stand up and declare your support for Mr. Obama.

For the record, I was a big Edwards supporter, but since he left the race, Mr Obama is the obvious choice.

Last chance, Hillary donors, to pay off the 5 million debt the 'impoverished' Clintons want back from her campaign. Come on, be loyal diehards, forego your lunch money a few more times.
Any other reason to raise money is a fairy tale.

Hillary's earlier losses came from her campaign failures, but today, her loss of support among the party faithful comes from her vile behavior of trashing a fellow Democrat.

More accurate headline:

"Clinton attempting to raise money from calls to quit race."

I cringe when I see bad writing on the web since so many young(er) people use the internet for their "news." The article/item does not in any way show evidence that money has actually been raised in response to the campaign's call.

I would be interested to know if the strategy works.

What mphillip said.

When I read the headline, I clicked through to see how much money Hillary had raised off of this only to find that the headline was merely sloppy/misleading. She's trying to raise money off of this.

Dear Minions, You see we have a small problem... Your Majesty really screwed up the Primaries and has lost. To keep things going, Your Majesty has had to use some of her own money. It is obvious now that this thing is over but Your Majesty would like to recoup the millions that has been given to the campaign. Please, won't you give me all your money? I can use your money to completely destroy Obama and support McCain so that a Republican can be elected President and I can destroy the Democratic party not only in 2008 but also in 2012!

Thanking you,
Your Majesty, Queen Hillary

Hillary will NOT let Obama win...period. I could see her never fully endorsing Obama. The Clintons are the poorest losers in political history and quite possibly the biggest bunch of whiners and liars to ever live in Washington. They need to go away...far away to truly clean up politics.

If William Jefferson Clinton, remained in the White House after "oral sex" became a household word, Senator Clinton is staying and fighting to the last vote. She'll get her share of FLA and Michigan delegates or these states go McCain in November. Also, why quit? Reverend Wright and Senator Empty Suit Obama have plenty of time to F-up.

Plus, as time goes on, Supers will see Obama can not win in a general election the states of PA, Ohio, Indiana, VA, all of the south incl FL, plus NM, and all those RED states that have given him the lead in delegates. Where are the electoral college votes? Mid-lower income whites won't vote Obama, over 50 (unless AAs) won't vote Obama, Cubans and Hispanics won't vote Obama, only the left (liberals and the new PC term progressives) and AAs will vote Obama.

I remember 1972 with Senator McGovern and I am sure Senator Obama is another McGovern waiting to happen. If Obama is nominated and has his clock cleaned, the Democratic Party afterwards will rid ourselves of the far left loonies, caucuses and those always seeking a handout and go back to a middle of the road, proud to be American, hard working, socially progressive party and maybe one which can learn to spend taxpayer funds responsibly.

Either way, Hillary should fight to the end and if a person truly cares more for their country than a party, if Obama is the nominee, vote McCain 2008.

Hey Marginal,

I remember you once telling us you were a big fan of Bill O'Really. Could it possibly be that you just might be a Rush Limbaugh fan as well?

I would just love to hear your thoughts on the Operation Chaos that he is advocating. You know, getting republicans to vote for Hillary in the primary because they know she will be a less formidable opponent against McCain.

As matter of fact,I think you probably participated in it yourself.

Snark Snark Snark. The politician formerly known as Hillary, Billary, or Hillzilla is being renamed as of today.

After her many statements of staying in the race and going down in flames as her only defense, it is my honor and pleasure to OFFICIALLY rename her "SHRILLARY". Need I say more?

Bull. Hillary lost Texas like Al Gore lost Florida.

So anybody know how much more money she sucked out of unsuspecting donor's visa accounts.

She already did it once to a former finance committee member. The member had to file a police report to force Hillary's campaign to give the money back.

Hillary's campaign told the member that there had been multiple problems of this kind.

http://www.bluejersey.com/userDiary.do;jsessionid=428F98B347F7379135E5106667ED7618?personId=900

So I am wondering just how many donors were scammed like this and how much money we are talking about here.
http://opensecrets.org/pres08/expend_detail.asp?ID=N00000019&cycle=2008&code=R90&Page=5
This is just the people who demanded refunds. How many more just slipped by.

Muckraker...please check this out!

Let's all start calling her General Hershey Bar - The Survivor of Tuzla. Her command and control of delegates is melting, by the hour. She asks for alms; send almonds instead.

Sane people vote for Obama. Sane people endorse Obama. Sane people reject and denounce Hillary.
