Goolsbee Tale Becomes An International Incident, Incites Verbal Brawl In Canadian Parliament!

Who ever thought someone named Goolsbee could incite an international incident? The Obama campaign, working overtime to minimize the damage from the latest turn in the Goolsbee saga, is sending around this video of the Canadian Parliament arguing over the story...

The Obama campaign is defending itself by pointing to the Canadian P.M.'s assertion that the Canadian government regrets its role in sparking this dispute, but it's unclear from his remarks, at least on this video, whether he is saying anything meaningful about the veracity, or lack thereof, of the tale.

Meanwhile, the messaging coming out of the Obama camp on this doesn't appear to be impeccable. Here, for instance, is leading Obama surrogate Dick Durbin still asserting that no meeting took place, though it's now conceded that a meeting did in fact happen...

This was a very clever move by the HRC camp. Obama was hurting her on NAFTA in Ohio. The polls appear to indicate she has stalled, and perhaps even reversed, his momentum there. I believe this -- and not the 3AM silliness -- has had the greatest effect.

Although it doesn't appear problematic enough to deserve the "-gate" monikor Clinton surrogates are already attaching, it is not good. The initial denial of the meeting did not help things.

So the Canadians basically apologize for this whole unfortunate flap and the PM discredits the implications in the memo (that hasn't been produced) and yet, this continues to be news. Remind me again, who signed NAFTA?

The problem is they initially denied there was a meeting, not it appears there was. Although I no longer support HRC, I must give her camp kudos on this move in what has otherwise been a complete disaster of a campaign.

The continuation of a fairly innate story is no doubt being promulgated by the Clinton camp. I think it's also fairly obvious they spurred the leak.

Bill had some dealings with a certain Canadian billionaire -- helped with a Uranium mining deal if I recall. Does anyone know if this can in anyway be connected? If I'm the Obama camp, I'd be looking into this... could have a nice boomerang effect.

No, they never denied a meeting. They denied that Goolsbee was acting in a capacity as an Obama campaign staffer or that he said what was initially reported.

You're right it was a very nuanced Bill Clinton-esque denial. Something along the lines of "no one at any level of our campaign, at any point, anywhere" told Canada that Obama would soften his position on NAFTA.

IMO, it's much better to avoid the back-lash of a nuanced denial that later comes back to make you look dishonest. Harks back to old politics -- such as the definition of "is" or "sexual relations." What does "any level of our campaign" mean? No need to be misleading here. I think this was one of the Obama campaign's first gaffes.

It turns out it was a Tory that leaked the story. Sounds more like a little help from the conservatives in Canada for their neoconservative buddies in the USA. To me it seems like Clinton has capitalized on it more, but it still reeks of typical Harper politics that mimics GOP tactics in many aspects.

This is all going to work to help hillary win :)
Polls show she is going to win texas, ohio, vermont, rhode island:)

What color is the sky in your world?

Polls show

How true!

Polls showed for six months she was going to walk away with South Carolina, too.

How'd that work out again?

Durbin has no part in the core campaign operations, and every surrogate or supporter can't be expected to keep up on exactly what is going on.

That is NDP leader (www.ndp.ca) Jack Layton, guys.

Three O'Clock in the morning. The red phone rings in the White House.

Who do you want on hand to take the call? A candidate who has not whined once about the media coverage,

Or

A candidate who will piss in her pants suit out of fear that it is a call from the Dreaded Media.

If Hillary feels so threaten by a little media scrutiny, how the hell will she feel when Putin, Ahmadinejad, Chavez, Castro, and all those Arab Tyrants bring some real heat to bear on her!

or maybe someone looking for a tax return.

heh heh, tax returns. oh. my. god. what's with the Clenis and his (and her) tax returns? Not to mention, she still hasn't figured out how to file married but separate? meanwhile, too many uranium deals with Canadian Tories, probably. jeebus.

Can we have the 1,300-word memo, please? Now?

This page at least purports to have it. http://network.nationalpost.com/np/blogs/posted/archive/2008/03/03/naftagate-leaked-memo-of-obama-advisor-and-canadian-consul-meeting.aspx

It certainly seems to support the idea that Goolsbee did not initiate the meeting, although it does not say so directly.

Maybe the memo is all over by now, but it's the only place I could find as of an hour or so ago.

You should also look at responses on The Nation blog, e.g, Frosty Zoom.
He is Canadian, is very smart and informed and has other info and links.

Yeah, that business with Durbin doesn't help to clarify much, but the statement by the Canadian government is pretty unambiguous:

"The Canadian Embassy and our Consulates General regularly contact those involved in all of the presidential campaigns and, periodically, report on these contacts to interested officials. In the recent report produced by the Consulate General in Chicago, there was no intention to convey, in any way, that Senator Obama and his campaign team were taking a different position in public from views expressed in private, including about NAFTA. We deeply regret any inference that may have been drawn to that effect."

At a certain level, though, this is almost funny. What in God's name prompted some Canadian politicians to go all Kremlin, and what exactly frightens them about the possibility of an Obama presidency -- tariffs on Molson?

One thing that is probably to our advantage in our relationship with the United States is the widespread ignorance of anything in Canada, as the Molson joke attests. There is more trade between Canada and the US than between any two countries in the world, including China, or in the history of the world I would guess. The border between Detroit and Windsor is the busiest border crossing in the world. Canada is the number one supplier of oil and natural gas to the US, more than Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Venezuela. Ontario is the jurisdiction with the largest auto business in North America, producing more than Michigan. (partly because corporations like not having to pay for health care!) So no, chaunceyatrest, this is not about Molson. This is about renegotiating your most important trading relationship... not good news for Harper and his sponsors, the business class in Canada. but many of us might welcome a chance to end the US's contractual privileged access to Canadian oil. Be careful what you ask for.

I think the Obama campaign needs to issue some special asbestos underwear to Senator Obama, his campaign staff, and all surrogates, so that, when their pants catch fire, no permanent injury is incurred.

Alternatively, their statements might be uttered instead by stunt doubles.

frankly0, you missed all the good stuff this morning, you would have been thrilled about the 1,300-word memo, which nobody has yet seen, of course.

But I think Mark Penn and Howard Wolfson need asbestos underwear for that "3 AM phone call" ad.

Remember the kick-ass question Slate asked them on Friday: what specific foreign policy crises has Sen. Clinton managed in her 35 years of experience (whether at 3 AM or at any time)?

*Crickets*

Greg, you seem to be conveniently forgetting that Goolsbee was doing this in his capacity as a professor, not as a representative of the Obama campaign. So asserting that Durbin is lying about a meeting, without giving the propper context of that meeting is just plain bad journalism.

Next time I'll drop the dreaded "B" word.

Canadian opposition in Parliament denounces Tory interference with American election! Demands firing of Prime Minister Harper's chief of staff and sources for fraudulent disinformation campaign!

I LOVE it. Stick that in your bong, Wolfson!

ahahahahahahaha

second clip of Durbin's sloppy messaging is no longer available . . . .

No matter, I'm sure it just proves that Durbin made secret promises to the prime minister of Canada that Barack would let Canada have all the American jobs they wanted, esp. from lots more Ohio factories that will be shutting down . . . . Just more proof that Obama is lying to the voters of Ohio ;)

The Right Wing Tory Government of Canada is meddling in the Democratic Primary. They are trying to stop Obama, and make things much easier for John McCain by having only to face Hillary in November. She has no appeal amongst Independants and Moderate Republican voters, so McCain would beat her easily. The Canadian Conservatives are trying to rig the American Election to help the Republicans.

yep. exactly.

Why is it that Harper's statement on this reminds me so much of Hillary's statement regarding Obama not being a Muslim? It's no surprise that he and his government would be doing her dirty work for her.

Clintons surrogates attacking Obama over this debunked bullshit.
Then they go into the rezko thing.

Does this mean people will stop calling this a non-story? Whosoever is behind this smear tactic will keep on pushing it until the Obama camp comes addresses this more clearly.

..until the Obama camp addresses this more clearly.

I sense that their emphasis has been in getting the Canadian government itself to clarify the situation, and that has been fairly successful, but there are details about Goolsbee which Goolsbee and the campaign have not been candid about.

I hate hockey and maple syrup.

Is that what we have to do, boycott Maple Syrup? Dang, I love that stuff. Hockey, ehh . . . .

user-pic

We don't need no stinkin' Canadian maples for syrup; there's plenty from the US.

This is so silly. But if any publicity is good publicity, perhaps a tussle in the mid will keep Democratic name recognition high enough to bury McCain.

I will say it again:

NAFTA = CLINTONS!

Or

NAFTA - JOBS = CLINTONS!

Or

CLINTONS = NAFTA =====> LESS JOBS in Ohio

Limbaugh urges listeners to vote for Clinton

Limbaugh wants the Democratic race to continue.

(CNN) – As Hillary Clinton battles to keep her presidential bid alive, she may be getting help from an unlikely source: conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh.

Limbaugh has been actively urging his Texas listeners to cross over and vote for Clinton in that state's open primary Tuesday, arguing it helps the Republicans if the Democratic race remains unsettled for weeks to come.

Oh Man...I just heard that woman, KIKI someting? on MSNBC...Man, I really hate these people now.

The more I hear them talk and attack a fellow Democrat, the leader in the race from our party, the more I hate them!

Really?

Because OH and TX are essentially tied and Obama has a 20+ point lead in Vermont.

Supposed to be a reply to HillaryClinton08.

This site is glitchy as fuck.

Polls show nothing of the sort. and anyone who actually witnessed the Obama march/canvass to the Franklin County Board of Elections here in Columbus on Saturday would have been as amazed as I was.

I've seen the polls. But I also saw people wait in line 2+ hours on Saturday to vote. Almost all were Obama supporters. Unless Clinton is cleaning up in the rural areas, there is no way she is going to hold on to ohio.

the weather here looks nasty tomorrow. but the determination of these obama supporters is amazing. i think he will end up winning OH 53-47. TX 55-45.
RI 52-48. VT 64-36. and then its on to mccain.

user-pic

From your lips to God's ears. Or from your keyboard, as it were...

Tomorrow's my anniversary - I really don't want it ruined by Hillary spinning two-point victories into some "comeback kid" bullshit...

bravo6, this sounds important. You say you were an eyewitness in Columbus on Saturday? Huge crowds of Obama supporters were waiting for hours to vote early (advance voting)? Was that going on in Cleveland, too? Did any of the pollsters claim they included early voters in their models?

oh, meanwhile, nobody else had the cojones to step up and make specific predictions, so thanks for that.

user-pic

I hope you're right. All these polls today have looked awful.

The description below is the communication that was FIRST reported by CTV and that was denied by Obama and his campaign.
"Within the last month, a top staff member for Obama's campaign telephoned Michael Wilson, Canada's ambassador to the United States, and warned him that Obama would speak out against NAFTA, according to Canadian sources.
The staff member reassured Wilson that the criticisms would only be campaign rhetoric, and should not be taken at face value."

According to ABC, this story was leaked on 2/27 to CTV by the Prime Minister's Chief of Staff. You'll notice it differs in just about all particulars from the in-person meeting that occurred between very different people in a very different city.

So, here's the question: If all the Canadians ever had (in fact, if all there ever WAS!) was that memo about the Chicago non-event ........ then HOW THE HECK did that original story come into being? I think it's apparent that someone made some serious mischief somewhere along the way. Who?

Yes, the Obama campaign seems to have stumbled pretty awkwardly (quite unusual for them), but think about it. The meeting that was first described DID NOT HAPPEN and, even if the campaign had known about Goolsbee's session in Chicago (which apparently it didn't), you wouldn't natually even connect the two.

In fact, if someone was making really "smart" (and totaly unethical) mischief, putting out a story Obama would naturally deny and then morphing it into one they had to acknowledge, so it would look like there was a cover-up, would be quite effective. -- I know that sounds paranoid, but, well, one has learned there is sometimes reason to be. Hmmmm...... I wonder what Karl Rove is up to these days?

Intrade prediction market still has Obama at 85.0 --- Hillary at just 16.4...

Very early this morning, the website for the Columbus Post-Dispatch confirmed that Ohio voters have been able to vote early at county boards of elections.

"The primary election will draw many Ohio voters to the polls on Tuesday, although many others already have voted early at county boards of elections or via mail with absentee ballots."

http://www.dispatch.com/live/content/editorials/stories/2008/03/03/RECAP.ART_ART_03-03-08_A10_2L9G8V4.html?sid=101

OTOH, another item in the same paper from yesterday hints there may be severe delays in counting the vote:

http://www.dispatchpolitics.com/live/content/local_news/stories/2008/03/02/ARE_WE_READY.ART_ART_03-02-08_A1_JQ9GC7D.html?adsec=politics&sid=101

[sorry for not using html tags for style, left my cheat-sheet at home]

Bunch of American pussies.

C'mon and bomb us... there's lots of women and children for you to target.

LOL! 'cept for where you call us pussies, you dipshit

But seriously, you can't seriously believe any of this "We Will Invade Canada To Avenge Our Disgust That Tories In Your Fake Country Tried To Throw A Fucking Monkey Wrench Into the Middle of Our Democratic Presidential Primary Campaign."

Or, are you reeellly, reeellly nervous about what our Obama-Maniacs are currently doing, loading up huge busloads of people in Buffalo, Detroit, Seattle, and all across your completely indefensible border? Heading to your govt. centers, with their Islamo-Fascist Obama-Bombs?

Is that what's keeping you up at night, Canada eh?

I have read a number of reports that the Obama ground team has been very effective in both TX and OH to get people who attended his rallies to go directly from the rally to vote early. If this is true, and all this took place in the past week or so, it is possible that even as I type this, Obama may have already built a significant plurality of the early votes, offsetting whatever polling and voting effects that are likely to take place tomorrow. This is a tedious way of saying I think Obama is going to do better than the latest polls indicate because of the early voter effect.

The second dynamic is that the polls indicate the preferences of people who responded to calls from their long lines, whereas thousands of Obama supporters have only cell phones, and are therefore invisible to pollsters. Again, another factor that may help Obama perform better than the latest poll numbers.

Am I whistling in the dark? Maybe but not entirely.

LuxVeritas wrote: "Durbin has no part in the core campaign operations, and every surrogate or supporter can't be expected to keep up on exactly what is going on."

Kinda like when Hillary's surrogates were lambasted for remarks about Obama's drug use (i.e., Shaheen)?

Oh, no wait. That would be different. Because this is about Obama. Who can do no wrong.

I keep forgetting.

LOL.

Obama got caught on this one. So much for transparancy. Last week, the story was there was NO meeting, NO conversation.

Now we learn that wasn't quite right.

Now we learn that there was assurances made by Obama but Canada is embarrassed so trying to put the toothpaste back in the tube.

LOL...

Yeah, you can!

Fractal, you imperialist swine,

Put the comma after Canada, before eh.

(Say it out loud and you'll know what I'm saying)

As a Canadian, I thought I'd offer the following clarifications & comments...

1) The first clip has Jack Layton the leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP) questioning Steven Harper, our Prime Minister, from the Conservative Party. The anchor mentions the "Labour Party" which doesn't exist in Canada, although the NDP certainly does have a lot of Union support.

2) If you listen to Harper's response, you'll notice that he doesn't exactly rush to Obama's defense. Don't expect him to. He'd be happy to have third term for Bush, failing that he'd be happy with McCain, and failing that he'd be happy to cause as much confusion in the Democratic party as possible. So trust what he says about Obama as little as possible.

3) This "story" is so ridiculous. Some minion of Obama's is supposed to have had a meeting with someone at the Canadian Embassy, in which he is supposed to have assured the Canadians that he isn't serious about changing NAFTA. Dumb!

4) Anyone who says the media is biased against Clinton need look no further than this story for proof that they treat Obama the same way. This is a complete non-story that is being pushed over & over and will likely hurt Obama in Ohio. I think the reason people feel that Clinton gets a harder time is because she has a longer history of issues to explain and she has run a much more mistake-prone campaign.

Cheers from Canada!

It all got very convoluted.

The initial story reported a meeting with the Canadian ambassador in Washington, which never took place and the Obama camp denied.

Then more of the story started coming out and it switched to this meeting with some Canadian office in Chicago, which did happen and the Obama camp did not deny.

This Goolsbee guy wasn't sent there to discuss NAFTA, it came up during the meeting. He wasn't given any authority from the Obama camp to discuss such a thing with the Canadians, but he did it anyway. Now he's saying that this Canadian hack in Chicago fired off a memo to Ottawa that misrepresented what was said in the meeting, but there's no transcript to be able to tell who misunderstood.

This whole thing has taken what was probably a routine meeting between the Canadian representative in Chicago and the Obama campaign and given it the appearance of something sordid.

I'm reminded that I've seen several journalists in the past month all but salivate over the thought of a brokered convention and of having something exciting to report for the next 3 months. This has all the appearance of the media stepping in to help Hillary finish just a little better and stay in the race. She can't overcome the pledged delegate lead and more and more superdelegates are saying that they won't overturn the will of the people. All that leaves the democrats with is a female version of Mike Huckabee.

Obama's Reagan fixation is beginning to show through. Heck, the chosen one didn't even wait until he's the nominee before he begins backroom dealing with foreign governments like his hero Reagan did --- sending Casey to negotiate a release of the hostages before the 1980 general election. This guy is trouble -- next we'll hear he's been having secret talks with Ahmadinejad to facilitate a withdrawl from Iraq.

user-pic

I wonder if Norah O'Donnell, or her employers at MSNBC, are feeling any kind of embarassment at her exposure as a brainless news-reader/non-threatening eye candy figure.

How friggin' hard is it to research stuff like this -- or to know that Canada has no Labour party?

Cripes.

That's a laugh, the Obama campaign now squealing about biased treatment from the media. This guy's been treated with kidd gloves. It's about time the luminaries in the MSM pull their collective heads out their collective ass and start treating this this guy objectively. Now if Rich, Dowd, Dionne, Robinson, Fineman, Olbermann, Cohen and the rest of the Op-Ed Obamaphiles would follow their lead and begin squeezing those gigantic heads out…..

Yes, that is Jack Layton, and the New Democratic Party (NDP) that he leads has always been anti-NAFTA, mostly from union pressure.

What is interesting to note is that in 1993, the Liberal government campaigned on "renegotiating NAFTA." For many reasons, the Conservatives literally melted in that election - down to 2 seats out of 308! Canada used to be a two-party nation, but since this time, the two majors have been joined by the Bloc Quebecois and the NDP.

As soon as the Liberals got into office, though, they reneged big time. Renegotiation was never heard from again as an issue. So the rhetoric of the last debate rings rather funny in the Canadian's political ear.

With regard to the conservative Tories, we all need to remember that this is the same crew that
offered the late MP from British Columbia, Chuck Cadman, a $1 million life insurance policy in an attempt to win his vote and bring down the Liberal government.

As if they'd be above trying to influence the Democratic primary.

I think the Harper Conservatives will do anything they can to help Republican candidates in the forthcoming campaign in the absence of real neo-con candidates for office. They are true believers in Thatcherite de-regulation, low taxation, Western imperialism and harsh criminal code sanctions. They carry the legacy of the free protestant movement directly descending from Calvin's Geneva. Harsh and punitive, devil take the hindmost zealots. Regard them as exhibits in the social science museum of sociopathology, Harper especially. He is one strange punitive individualist. Would fit well in an Ayn Rand universe in the unlikely event that it ever existed. Ignore him and his flunkies. Laughing at him is he best strategy. And be aware that he is likely to lose his seat and possibly his liberty for callously conspiring to bribe a dying member of Parliament to obtain his crucial vote three years ago with Party-sponsored life insurance. Despicable is the only word that fits. Big Steve has earned it. He is suburban aspiration personified. The worship of upward social mobility is a disease and he has it.

According to The National (Canada's well-respected CBC nightly newscast), the initial report from the Candadian Tory government was quite distorted. (Video at
http://www.cbc.ca/mrl3/8752/vsu/wmv-hi/macdonald-obama-memo080303.wmv)

In particular, the contact was a call TO Obama, not FROM him.

Tsam, I'm sorry, I thanked Elizabeth2 for the video clip, but you posted it last night (pre-dawn hours this morning). See my reply Tuesday afternoon to Elizabeth2, below. Sorry about that.

Rovian polictics at its best. Congratulations Mrs. Clinton. Win at any cost and continue the Bush-Clinton era of dishonest, nepotistic, corporate fueled, attack and destroy politics. If you win, the nation will lose.

wolf1739 -- Thank you for expressing what I've seen so well: a routine meeting turned into something sordid.

So who did the 'turning'??? Without that 'sexy' and quite scandalous initial story (telephone call from 'senior staff member' to 'Canadian Ambassador' in Washington to warn him not to take Obama's words at 'face value,' that it was all 'campaign rhetoric'), the memo itself wouldn't have gotten more than passing interest.
http://abcnews.go.com/images/Politics/Canwest%20News_1.pdf
AND there would have been no denials by the Obama campaign to hang them with. (Axelrod says the campaign didn't even know about the meeting with Goolsbee and Goolsbee himself didn't know about the memo - and disputes the accuracy its contents).

So SOMEONE had to make up the totally false but attention-getting details about that initial meeting - Who?

party-of-one - could this perhaps have been Rovian in fact? Clinton hasn't been able to pull off any of these tactics with such finess (tho sh has certainly tried), the Republicans could actually benefit the most, and from the little I've learned about Canadian politics, they would have been the most likely to have ties that would give them access to the memo. ???

Elizabeth2, never mind . . . .

I switched you and Tsam. But I did want to thank you for finally getting us a copy of the infamous 1,300-word memo. As CBC's news report indicated, this is no "memo," it is a highly-classified, secret, diplomatic cable which even Canadian press reporters are never able to gain access to. The CBC reporter said Canada's foreign ministry is deeply worried that the leak of this cable will severely chill all relations between all Democratic Party campaigns and Canada.

That is the bottom line, Goolsbee was assured his comments would be kept confidential and private, and the Tory govt. set him up. So to Prime Minister Harper we should all say, up yours!

Elizabeth2, just in case you were going to check back here after posting last night, I wanted to say thank you very much for the link to the CBC website. There is a slightly different audio clip up there now (Tuesday afternoon 3/4/08) giving a very sharp analysis of the Conservative govt. meddling in American politics. The reporter quotes diplomatic sources in Canada as saying they deeply regret misinterpreting Goolsbee's comments, said the Obama campaign is extremely angry about this obvious meddling by the Tory govt., as a result Canadian foreign ministry sources are deeply worried now that this leak of a secret diplomatic cable has chilled all American campaigns against speaking to the Canadians. Reporter stressed that nobody in the Canadian press is ever able to gain access to such classified embassy cables, not even under their FOIA, implying this was a deliberate Tory leak to hurt Obama.

Ignorance, as you can see on this thread, is our strong suit.
