Emily's List Announces Huge Outreach Effort For Hillary In Pennsylvania

Emily's List, the high-profile PAC with a mission statement of election pro-choice Democratic women, has announced a big campaign targeting up to 150,000 women in the southeastern region of Pennsylvania, the state where Hillary Clinton needs a huge win to restore her credibility.

One of Hillary's most reliable bases of support has been suburban white women, and there are plenty of them to be found in the greater Philadelphia area. No dollar amount has bee put the Emily's List drive yet, but it will consist of mailers and phone calls.

Late Update: It's worth remembering that Barack Obama will have his own help in Pennsylvania, in the form of a ground game from SEIU.

I thought that Emily stood for Early Money Is Like Yeast.

Isn't it a bit late for them to try and add the yeast after Hillary has already run a Half Baked Campaign.....Rim Shot Please!

As a white woman over 40, all I can say is-- auggh. I thought Emily's List was founded to help women *enter* politics, not bail out the sinking ship of a former frontrunner who enjoys all the power and privileges of the power elite??

Gee I do not know Ruth. EMILY's List says on their website that they help women run and win. They say they have a record number of outstanding, progressive, pro-choice Democratic women who have stepped up to run this year.
I guess you do not know much about them.
To the women at Emily's list electing a woman president would appear to big deal.

It's certainly true that Hillary is really hurting for money right now, so I guess they figured she needs all the help she can get. Still, my understanding was that Emily's List was intended to be "early money" to help women get ahead in politics. Hillary had huge built-in advantages that no woman in history has ever had running for office. But having run a horrendous campaign, for Hillary, it's way, way late in the game.

And while I'd love to see a woman president, I don't want it to be like this:
* only there due to being wife of former president
* pulling the "Tonya Harding" option and dragging down the Democratic party

Of course, this naked display of identity politics is presumably counter-balanced by the millions of dollars the NAACP is pouring into its Obama effort, no?

I don't believe the NAACP is doing anything to back Obama actually. In fact, the California NAACP backed Hillary, you know, way back when they thought she was inevitable.

So yes, you are right about identity politics, but it is only coming from one side.

user-pic

The NAACP doesn't endorse candidates. The NAACP Chairman is Julian Bond. He's supported Hillary's call for the (illegitimate) delegates in FL & MI to be recognized. So maybe you should spend a little more time doing research before you post anything.

user-pic

Just spend 10 minutes on the NAACP site and did not see Senator Obama's name there at all.

How do you know the NAACP is advocating in PA for Obama?

How is this for research-
23 million jobs were created, the lowest black and latino unemployment in US history, the biggest surpluses in US history. Land preserved for parks instead of commercial use was the highest since the Teddy Roosvelt administration. The lowest crime and abortion rates since the 1960s. The longest economic expansion since world war II.
A record of black judges being appointed to federal and state courts.
A record of women appointments in the federal government.
The 1990s were a decade of peace and prosperity.
And was our President?
A Clinton

How about the all time biggest jump in the incarceration rate for Black and Brown men. How about harsher drug sentences for crack vs cocaine, how about welfare reform, how about "mend it don't end it" how about Sista' Soulja, how about the most loyal supporters for the Clinton's during the last 2 decades who stuck by them like glue even during the Clinton's lowest point during the Lewinsky affair being treated like crap because the Tonya Harding of politics has to have her due. Yes all this happened under people named Clinton.

user-pic

Thank you! I was just going to reply, "Sure, it's easy to have higher employment rates for blacks and Latinos when you lock up a big chunk of the populations."

I think Dave was being ironical.

Um, no. Old school civil rights organizations have all flocked to Clinton. Or at least their proverbial leaders have. Thanks for playing though.

"Pennsylvania, the state where Hillary Clinton needs a huge win to restore her credibility"

I don't know, Eric, if even a rout would do that for her at this stage.

user-pic

I echo Ruth in OR's comment. Clinton has been in politics (as she keeps telling us...), and has mismanaged the campaign she has run, so why is Emily's List helping to bail her out?

In any event, could someone ask the Clinton campaign why, after all that negative advertising about Obama not debating, she hasn't agreed to the debate in North Carolina?

Could it be, possibly, that the Clinton campaign does, in fact, realize that for all intents and purposes, it is, in fact, over???

Hillary Rodham Clinton has endorsed John McCain for Commander in Chief instead of Senator Obama.

John McCain wants to keep the Iraq War going for ever.

If Hillary loses her nomination bid, will Emily's list follow Hillary's lead and raise money for John McCain, in order that he can maintain Bush's Iraq War?

Hillary would prefer that McCain win over Obama.

She has endorsed John McCain for Commander in Chief.

What say you about that issue, Emily's List?

And another thing-- they better not try to pull anothe one of those phony attack mailers like in NH accusing Obama of not being pro-choice due to "present" votes or NAFTA lies or whatever.

It truly boggles me that any thinking person or progressive organization would continue to support Hillary Clinton at this point. (I can understand "average" voters who maybe aren't following every detail and are going on their former respect for her, I guess....)

On a purely tactical/practical level--she's lost, and could only possibly claw out a win thru destructive and/or nefarious means. Certainly I find it hard to imagine preferring her over Obama on personal or even policy grounds. I just don't get it. Are they just afraid to defy the Clinton machine?

Oh good, more lies about Obama's 100% pro choice record coming our way.

No dollar amount has bee put the Emily's List drive yet, but it will consist of mailers and phone calls.

Maybe they'll recycle those misleading 'Obma won't stand up for women's rights' mailers they used in NH? They care so much about women and their rights & issues, they'll lie to them to get their votes.

TPM = surrogate for the Clinton campaign

I'm assuming this means Emily's list is going to let loose with the false mailers attacking Obama's position on abortion just like they did back in Iowa, New Hampshire and other early races.

Pennsylvania, the state where Hillary Clinton needs a huge win to restore her credibility

why does the race continue if she has no credibiity?

kick off with a little gender slur, eh.

Barack is back up over 80% in the Intrade markets.

But McCain has 96%. Barack will never beat him in Intrade. But Hillary can after Pa.

Hey Hoffa, I'm 101% behind Obama's campaign, but let's direct our sniper fire at the appropriate targets. Whining about TPM's (at-best generally "neutral") coverage of the primary doesn't help, in my estmation. Did you see Josh's frontpage diagnosis of the latest HRC Wright-psychosis? I'm as frustrated as you evidently are at the hatchet job of Penn & Co but picking on TPM doesn't seem very helpful. Again, this is just my two cents. I mean, lay into myDD or whatever all you want, but I've found fairly reliable coverage here at TPM over the past few months and I'd hate for a backlash backlash to spring up here as a result of the perception that Obama-backers are axe-grinders.

Hillary and her advisors are the ones who've decided to go all GOP on us, let's focus the blame where it belongs: on them.

Look at how much text they have written about Wright today. Then look at how much text they have written about Bosnia.

The only reason TPM and other media are talking about Wright so much instead of the sniper story, is because Clinton wants them to. They are doing exactly what she wants. She blatantly lied, multiple times, even in her response, and yet TPM is talking about Wright.

Therefore, TPM = Clinton Campaign surrogate.

i agree.

the real story is if Obama had said the lies that Hillary has, he would be FINISHED as a candidate.

so, the double standard exists even here.

A double standard? Certainly not, a standard that he embraced himself.

There are so many deserving House & Senate and state-wide candidates. I'd much prefer Emily's list use its influence there, where it can really, really, make the difference. To wade into a divisive primary fight seems designed to marginalize the group as a whole.

I'll be giving to candidates directly.

Isn't it interesting that Emily's choice whose mission is to help pro choice women to get elected could care less about the Obama spinners?
Of couse this is an Outrage!
How dare they think for themselves.
How could they not bow down to the Wingnut screaming whiny surregates of the Obama blogespere?

The word for the day is "The Tanya Harding Option".

user-pic

Phrase. Phrase for the day. For the campaign, ever since Super Tuesday.

McCain = Oksana.

user-pic

McCain = Oksana.

I have a friend from Ukrane named Oksana. She's much better looking then McCain.

user-pic

so why is Emily's List helping to bail her out?

Why didn't NARAL support Ned Lamont against Lieberman?

Don't ask me...

user-pic

Yeah, thanks for the memories of how fabulous the national Planned Parenthood and NARAL were in that election....ready to support rape gurney Joe.

Hillary should follow Huckabees's example. After all, he was from Arkansas too.

The fact that she's ahead in Pennsylvania and close to tied in national polls such as Gallup would indicate that rather than needing to "restore" her credibility, she HAS credibility. As for needing a big win in Pennsylvania, I believe Obama has already said this. I believe he said that Hillary could not claim victory in Pennsylvania unless she won by more than 10 points. I also believe this is called "raising the bar". Obama has also spent some energy "lowering expectations" in that state. Nevertheless he has already spent a considerable amount of money there. Troubling for Obama is that what seems to be coming out of Pa. is an indication of growing racial divide.

Shouldn't an 'emerging racial divide' be troubling for everyone?

user-pic

What a waste of Democratic energy. It's past time to get behind the viable candidate. Mrs. Clinton has clearly demonstrated that she is not in control of her staff, not in control of her campaign, not honest about her qualifications, not honorable in the way she is campaigning and not able to get the requisite money or votes.

It's time to MoveOn, Clintonians.

His Emily a fat lady, and is she singing????

I have been considering applying for work with Emily's List in the near future, or at least I was until I read this. What are the ethical/practical pros/cons at this point? I support their cause generally speaking but this incident shows extremely poor organizational judgment. I'm not sure if I'd want to work for or be associated with a group that would use its campaign resources like this. Then again, by the time I would be working for them, the Clinton Campaign will be moot or completely done. Any thoughts?

Emily's List. Didn't this group very reluctantly pull its support of a pro-choice woman whom they wanted to run against Senator Casey in 2006? I remember calling them in fury asking them if they intended to support someone who called the former governor and father of Senator Casey something like an "Irish Catholic redneck." Let's hope my fellow Irish Catholic rednecks remember this when Senator Clinton comes calling. Am I wrong here?

As a long time, sustaining member of Emily's List, I am extremely disappointed in the organization's willingness to follow Senator Clinton over the cliff. Talk about your "cult campaign'! The cult is Clinton's, not Obama's, with feminist activists closing their eyes to the reality of Clinton's loss, and continuing to support her destructive actions. What point is there to allowing her to destroy Democratic chances in the fall. Isn't the goal of EL to elect PRO-CHOICE women? If we can't get the woman, how about at least stepping back and letting the PRO-CHOICE man win?

I've just contacted Emily's List and told them I do not want one more dime of my money going toward Clinton's candidacy. I am disgusted with her behavior.

gak

She will win Penn. and Puerto Rico moved to a primary that will seal the nomination.

Clinton is working hard and on the attack while BO is on the beach.

His divisive preacher for 20 years proves his unity message is bs.

user-pic

Oh, I think you're just being modest. Clinton is not only going to win PA, she's going to win NC, Indiana, Ontario, Alberta, Puerto Rico, Guam, Samoa, Estonia, New Zealand, and Madagascar. They'll revote in Michigan and Florida, and in an amazing display of dominance, Hillary will receive every single vote. The scope of her victory will be stunning. So stunning, in fact, that John McCain will simply step aside and say "It's inevitable. Why waste the American people's time with such a useless process as an election? Hillary is Queen".

You read it here, first.

user-pic

Yup, then the 22nd amendment will be repealed in a landslide, we'll do away with voting, and Hillary will be installed as Queen for life, followed by Chelsea, who bravely dodged sniper fire with her mom.

GET a life. And you need some serious help with your math homework!

When Clinton concedes does that mean you have to go out and get a real job?

Wal-Mart is always hiring. And it's not like you're not familiar with shilling for big corporate sell-outs.

I'm just sayin'

user-pic

Emily's List has become part of the Washington establishment. Their original mission has long been sidelined as they seek to be a permanent and powerful inside player. Hillary in the White House means they get more, Obama or McCain as president means they don't. I stopped giving to them long ago.

I have also noticed, and I am saying this as a sixty-year-old woman, too many Clinton supporters want a woman to win--period. Is she the best candidate? Is she the best potential leader? That seems is unimportant to them. They want a woman. But in the last several weeks I have realized Hillary has proved to be far from the kind of person, woman or not, I want running this country. Blind devotion to an idea leaves sound judgement by the wayside.

Want to stop that from happening?

Get on the phone! Go to Barack's website and call women in PA. Tell them EXACTLY how you feel.

We can all do our part.

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton has already spent over $150 Million on a Campaign in which she was the overwhelming favorite to win from the very start, and yet she squandered all that money, and a huge lead, and managed to just limp in third in Iowa.

How does that type of Candidate qualify for Early Money is Like Yeast, at this juncture. It is becoming totally absurd.

It is comparable to the Republicans' way of always rushing to rescue distressed billionaires. Hillary has had plenty of money, but very little campaign leadership skills. All the money in the world can not nominate a fatally flawed candidate. Ask Steve Forbes, and Mitt Romney!

user-pic

The Wright stuff they've put up today doesn't exactly cast Clinton in a good light. I've been confused as hell by all of you who think TPM is anything other than pretty objective in its reporting. Clinton said some stupid things today, they reported it. She also tried to climb her way out of a lie. They reported it. Straightforward enough.

user-pic

Emily's List - is that like Craigslist?

user-pic

Early Money Is Like Yeast? You know, I once had a girlfriend with that problem.

Emily's about to get DE-LISTED. They must be terrified to see their power slipping away.

Time Emily called for Tuzula Tess

. "I certainly do remember that trip to Bosnia and ... there was a saying around the White House that if a place was too small, too poor, or too dangerous, the president couldn't go, so send the first lady. That's where we went. I remember landing under sniper fire. There was supposed to be some kind of greeting ceremony at the airport, but instead we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base."

Clinton leads Obama by 17 percentage points, according to an average of Pennsylvania polls by the website Real Clear Politics, and polls show that most voters have already made up their minds. She has the backing of the popular Gov. Ed Rendell and the mayors of the state's two largest cities, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, not to mention an impressive slew of congressmen, county chairmen and assemblymen, making her unquestionably Pennsylvania's establishment candidate. Clinton has also installed her A-team in the Keystone state. Mary Eisenhower, granddaughter of Dwight D. and a force in Pennsylvania politics, is her state director. Mark Nevins, John Kerry's state director in 2004, is also onboard, as is Nick Clemens, who ran Clinton's campaign in New Hampshire. They have 12 offices open now and expect to soon open another eight. And they have over 200 paid staff in the state. And two tv ads running..... I can't see her losing this state.... i believe she is going to get 62% of the vote:):)

Indeed.

These folks here have bought into the Obama media hype that it is over.

It is over after all the voters vote, then the superdelegates make Clinton the nominee.

Actually, her current RCP avg lead in PA is 16 pts, not 17. More to the point, however, I am glad that you are familiar with RCP averages. If you look at her RCP avg for Ohio this far out from the election, she was ahead by 21 pts, but in the end she won by only 10. In CA this far out she was ahead by 13 pts in the RCP avg, while in reality she won by 9.6. In NY she was ahead by 24 pts at this point in the race while in reality she won by only 17.5. In other words, there is not a race yet where she has won by the margin by which she lead a month out. Her lead has always, without exception, shrunk between the time a month before the election and the election itself. As such, while I expect that she will win, your expectations of a blow-out victory rather defy common sense and empirical realities.

Ha, ya'll think it is over?

Not even close.

Let the millions vote and the millions in Florida and Michigan count before you spew it is over.

Do not disenfranchise the millions of Americans that voted.

That is unAmerican.

The LEGISLATURES of Michigan and Florida decided that they couldn't get the necessary vote in on time.

To whine about it now is like me continuing to bitch about Star Wars: Episode I. I can cry all I want about how bad it sucked, but it doesn't change history.

The re-votes aren't happening. The delegations will be seated, but won't be able to affect the outcome.

Isn't it unfair to those states that adhered to the rules that MI and FL get a second chance to vote. Maybe other states that voted for Hillary the first time would like another chance. I know out here in CA, we'd LOVE another vote. After seeing Hillary's behavior the last month, she'd lose a popularity contest against syphillis.

Syphilis ?? But, I thought it was plague.

I wrote Emily's List as well to express my unhappiness with their MISUSE of my funds, and requested that they remove my name from their emails and fund-raising drives. Hillary Clinton is hardly a woman who has is entering politics, or one who has EVER lacked ANY opportunity. To think that I've actually talked them up and passed out their literature.

I'm not a BIG contributor, but I have been a steady one. I'm hoping that I'm not the only one who has voiced her displeasure with the organization, and resigned from it.

Completely agree with you.

I have been contributing to them for years as well as (sporadically) attending the annual conference and Hillary has never deigned to show her face (unlike most of her female Senate colleagues).

They need to focus their (our) money down ticket where it can do some good.

I'm getting a pony for Christmas!

Dream on. 62% won't do it, despite my deep admiration for the inestimable GOTV talents of Mr. Clemens (who is one of the few mensches working for the Senator). Clinton needs 65% to 35% PA split to take out a 50 lead in delegates, instead of a paltry 20. NC also is looking really, really bad for her. It is time for all of Senator Clinton's followers to leave Hillaryland for the Realityland most of us call home.

"Not even close."

Correct, it is not even close. :-) Rather it is certainly over. And Obama has it in the bag. Hillary can not win and thus has lost. She and her supporters simply are unable to admit they are done. They are simply whistling past the graveyard. People are fed up with the fear, innuendo and hate-mongering from the Clinton campaign.

Hurray for Emily's List! I was wondering how to contribute more to Hillary and now I can. It ain't over til it's over, and it's far from over.

Please save your money from the general election. Obama will need your support.

Does this work ever?

Anyone who thinks this isn't over after NC and IN is a downright fool.

We'll concede PA to Hillary, if that will make her happy, but her chances in NC and IN are nil.

I'd like to see her try to move the goal posts after that. Then again, she probably will, so perhaps I should just keep my mouth shut and remember that "This, too, shall pass."

user-pic

I'm all for women running for and winning elections, but one needs to elect the right women. Hillary Clinton isn't the right woman. She's not progressive, having a fairly consistent record of supporting corporate capitalism over the interests of ordinary people. She's not a peace candidate, having a fairly consistent record of supporting Bush and Cheney in their wars. Hillary is the wrong woman, who doesn't merit the support of Emily's List or any other organization that claims to support progressive politics. I'm no great fan of Obama, but in this race, he's the lesser of the two evils.

Rasmussen Poll says today 71% of Democrats would vote for Hillary in the general election and only 64% of them would vote for Obama. That is very bad news for Obama.

Horrible news for Obama! Unfortunately since he'll be the only one of the candidates having the opportunity, we'll just have to speculate.

user-pic

Rasmussen Poll says today 71% of Democrats would vote for Hillary in the general election and only 64% of them would vote for Obama. That is very bad news for Obama.

In March? Polls this far out are hardly much news for anyone.

Come on.

"Still, my understanding was that Emily's List was intended to be "early money" to help women get ahead in politics"

Uh gee Ruth, what part of my answer did you not understand?
You are dead wrong about your understanding.

I really do not care about your opinions about Hillary, you sound like Karl Rove.

I've just been resting up from three straight days of registering voters in Philly. Obama is going to take Philly in a big way next month, and that's going to eat into Clinton's suburban vote sumthin' fierce. Yes, she'll probably still win PA, but not by the margin she needs to stay "credible".

Understand, I don't think Hillary is a bad person or even a bad candidate. I look at it this way: Hillary's a $20 bill. Obama's a $100.

"...Pennsylvania, the state where Hillary Clinton needs a huge win to restore her credibility."

No amount of vote in Pennsylvania or anywhere else will restore Clinton's credibility.

"I remember landing under sniper fire."

"I helped to bring peace to Northern Ireland."

"I have been a critic of NAFTA from the very beginning."

"I helped to start S-CHIP."

The next time someone suggests that they may sit this election out if their candidate of choice isn't nominated, remind them that there's a real possibility that the next president might be appointing six justices to the supreme court.

That is how important this election is.

Oh I have two bottles of champagne in the fridge, one for when that old dumbfuck Bil Keene dies (of Family Circus fame) and the other for when that old dumb cunt Ginsberg dies. (incidentally, her husband Marty teaches tax law at my old law skool, and in his famously difficult corp tax course it was funny to observe no women or black students enrolled). Lookit, the S. Ct. decides nothing that important, quit wailing about Roberts and Alito (both fine lawyers, and I happen to have close contacts with HH, Roberts' old firm).

As for Emily's List, what a bunch of silly dumb cunts, likely irritable from yeast infections. What a ridiculous idea, that someone is a better politician because they have a cunt. In the height of such silliness, I saw in the Guardian some five years ago an article about some DCO (dumb cunts' organization) which argued that Turkmenistan was better than the UK because 50% of their legislature was womyn, while the House of Commons only had 13% MWCs (members with cunts). I've been to Ashgabat and seen first-hand the horrors of Turkmenistan, but I imagine you dumb cunts can't even figure out how ridiculous and shameful on all levels the argument behind the Guardian article truly is.

On another front, I see how the dumb cunt proprietor of this site is confused by the higher bid for Bear. It's simple: Bear's assets are not as toxic as feared, and JPM should pay the shareholders something closer to the real value of their shares, notwithstanding the unusual nature of this transaction.

I'm so sorry someone with your education and connections (apparently) thinks about the world the way you do.

Sad. Demeaning to you. Ugly.

Please leave it off TPM from now on.

and as for the Bosnia = Wright logic, what non-sense. Clinton puffs up her bio with a silly exaggeration, typical for an aging feminist of her generation. Obama has a long and intimate relationship with someone who in style and content really resembles a Nazi. And as a careful student of modern European history, I can assure you I am not making a casual association here. Accusing the government (with no basis at all) of murdering "his" people, not so different from the accusation that Germany was stabbed in the back by the SDs and Jews. The paranoid and angry bitter style of Wright's also resembles 1928 NASDP rhetoric. I could go on, but you dumbfucks won't understand the historical references. But man o man, Obama has appallingly bad judgment to pick such a fucking fruitcake to be his "old uncle." In my dream world, he'd appoint Wright as Fed chairman or something. (by the way, you'll note the departments where you never find womyn or black people include: economics, physics, math.) That would be hilarious. dollar/ euro 250,000, inflation 100,000%, unemployment 70% (i.e. like zimbabwe)

NAFTA.

No Clintons for me, thanks.

well, OK, I said "cunt." I consider it far more obscene for people like some of my law skool profs, particularly feminists and URMs, to assert that they should be privileged by virtue of race or gender. And that bad ideas must be promoted because of the privileged identity of the so-called "scholar." I think it is obscene that people posing as intellectuals and promoters of human rights can actuallt think that the formality of a 50% female "legislature" in a dictatorship actually is better tha British democracy, even if 87% of the MPs don't have cunts, presumably they can understand and represent the interests of their constituents who do. In Turmenistan, if a cunt-possesor complains to a MWC of the legislature, you can be sure the security services will be arresting that cunt-possessor shortly. (My use of the term "cunt-possessor" is meant to highlight the madness of identity politics. I am not defined by her genetalia, why are you people?)And I think it is obscene that you people so adore your polittical candidate that you think it is entirely inconsequential that one of his closest advisors is completely fucking nuts.

oh and JMC is a dumb cunt who knows nothing about economics and finance, and I suspect little of history despite his tony education. (ugh, I have met nothing but duds from princeton in particular, and they all have a sneering attitude towards unedumacated hicks like myself). I really urge him to stick to political gossip and shit rather than serious issues like the financial system, trade, law, government policy. Just tell us what someone in the Clinton campaign called Obama's mother etc etc. You're pretty good at that.

tpm entry is dated march 25th

when did emily's list announce pennsylvania voter registration effort

there was a March 24th midnight deadline for voter registration in pennsylvania

As a Hillary supporter I am a bit hesitant to donate any more money to her... I am not getting good vibes.

Although I support HRC, I am hesitant to donate any more to her campaign. I'm not having a good feeling about this, and frankly, I feel that I'd be throwing away my money. I'm sorry, but that's the way I feel.
