Debate Alert! Hillary And Obama Campaigns Accept Invite To ABC Debate In Philly
From the no-rest-for-the-weary-of-debates department comes this release just out from the Clinton camp...
The Clinton campaign today announced that Hillary has accepted an invitation to participate in a primetime debate hosted by ABC. The debate will be held in Philadelphia, PA in advance of the April 22nd Pennsylvania primary. The debate will be broadcast statewide and nationally.
No word on what the Obama camp will do yet.
Late Update: The Obama campaign accepts the ABC debate and one-ups the Hillary campaign with this release...
Today, Barack Obama accepted invitations to nationally televised debates with Senator Hillary Clinton in Philadelphia on April 16th and in North Carolina on April 19th.The Pennsylvania debate will be hosted by ABC News and held in the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia on Wednesday, April 16. The North Carolina debate, hosted by CBS News at a location to be determined, will be hosted by CBS and moderated by Katie Couric and Bob Schieffer.
I'll see your Pennsylvania and raise you a North Carolina.
Okay, so the Philly debate will happen on April 16th. No word on what Camp Hillary will do on North Carolina.
And it looks like Katie Couric may get to moderate her very own debate, after all!

NO MORE GD, STINKING, STUPID, BORING, ANNOYING, REPETATIVE DEBATES!!!!!! PLEASE SPARE US.
How many times do they have to say the same thing over, and over, and over, and over, and over again?

This is absurd. Are you so afraid of Obama losing another debate. No one put a gun to your head for you to watch the debate. You have so many choices. Some people in PA may be gunuinely undecided and have not watched any debates before. You think they should not get the opportunity to take a look at the candidates? The host, the campaigns have accepted the debate. What is your problem now?

Smart of the Obama campaign to throw a NC debate in there...it reminds everyone that winning Ohio and Pennsylvania doesn't deliver the nomination, and that the rest of the states do in fact exist.

I'm as sick of debates as the next guy, but I think this might be good for Obama.
It’ll give him a chance to directly challenge her on her “endorsement” of McCain, the secrecy over her tax records, library donors, etc.., and, especially, on her false claims of foreign policy experience and influence.
March 13, 2008 5:13 PM | Reply | Permalink
Maybe you are right. I get the sense, though, that Obama is far enough ahead that he doesn't need to worry about these things and doesn't need to take on the risk of a debate. Plus they are BORING.

I'm from PA, and I can tell you that if Obama will benefit from these debates, it's a good thing he accepted. It's going to be close. He can also ask Hillary about her hedge when questioned about his Christianity. It's sad, I used to really admire Hillary. Now she's so transparent. If Obama doesn't win the primary I think he should run as an independent. Even if he didn't "win" the GE, it would be the birth of our much needed third party.

I think all he can do is go on camera, smile, roll his eyes a little, remind voters that there's nothing much more to say, and accept.

lincoln-douglas only had seven.
this would be the 21st.
yes, we really need three times as many as lincoln and douglas had.
Now, that said, Obama should not be afraid to debate. He's got the moral highground on hillary after the disgusting tactics and rhetoric thats been coming out of her campaign, and i'm sure Obama would love to highlight those things for the voters of Pennsylvania.
I expect Obama will accept, its just bad politics not to.

I, for one, am all for it. There's no way that Hillary can come out of the debate looking that much better than Obama, and if this trend of tearing down Obama at every opportunity continues, she'll just look like a meanie. That's not how we roll on this side of the aisle.

Debates suck. They are boring, repetitive, and near useless at figuring out who to vote for. Obama should tell her to go pound sand. That way she will get distracted with hitting him on the fact that he won't debate her ---- which didn't work so well in Wisconsin.

"Debates suck" could be Obama's new slogan when YES gets old.
His followers can chant THAT line next.
This BLOG is as bad as NBC and Drudge...Goodness gracious let's not trouble these "journalists" minds with issues. Social security, health care and medicare just need to be dismissed, eh? Debates are superficial exercises. I don't think they are useful in understanding policy differences since the candidates inevitably give the same pat answers and spin... If you want something deep, read public and foreign policy journals.

Dear Hillary,
I implore you not to debate that man on ABC.
Do you realize that you will be walking into a trap.
It is going to be on TV, for Cripes Sake!. TV, that means that people will get to discover that you are running against a Black Man. Once people discover that, they will flock to his side. A White Wife of A White President does not have a fair chance against the advantages that being Black gives your opponent.
I beg you not to go through with it, but if you insist on going through with the debate, will you at least try and level the playing field by showing up in black face.

I'm glad to her about these debates, myself. There are lots of residents of PA and NC who are nowhere near as politically involved as TPM readers. Some of them will finally be starting to think about who they want to vote for in mid-April, since political TV ads will finally have come to their airwaves (I'm understating; they'll actually have taken over completely).
It's those people, who have watched zero or maybe one of the previous debates, who will benefit from these new ones. And they're the people who most need it.

Meanwhile, "I am honored to be here with Barack Obama"...(Thunderous applause).
Maybe she can try and mix the negative message with the positive...."I am honored to be here with that lucky son of a bitch black man, Barack Obama."

The only reason why Clinton wants that debate in Pennsylvania is to use it as a stage to appear congenial to the voters of Pennsylvania with her hands clean while Clinton surrogates surreptitiously smear Obama under the radar.
She'll use the debate to project that same faux sincerity she used at the end of that last debate where she said she was "proud" to "share the stage with Senator Obama" -- and with her head held high, she'll close with some brand new soundbite meant to leave the viewers (and the media) with the false impression of parity and fairplay, that will then get replayed and recyled on the cable nets the next day and onward.
The thing is, will the media buy it this time?

i agree with a previous poster. having another debate wont hurt BO. It will give the people of PA a chance to feel the OBAMA SPIRIT...
The Obama camp is already downplaying a win in PA, but i think that that is just a ploy.
If the race tightens (like we all expect it will) within 6-9 points within the next 2-3 weeks, he will continue to downplay the possibility of a win, while pouring everything into PA...
From what i have heard, most think that if BO takes the big cities and the suburbs, he can eek out a close win. But hey, anything but a blow out in PA is a victory for BO!

I do appreciate their giving the supporters of both candidates here in the comment dungeon something we can agree upon, yea, even a cause to rally around.
But I also see why both of them are doing it, sick of it though they must be.
Hillary is doing it because Northeastern rustbelt union folks love a technocrat above all forms f politician. They want a fixer, somebody who can get in there and work the levers and turn the wheels and squeeze a few extra bennies for them out of a zero sum game that's rigged in favor of the bossses. Hillary's people feel like debates are a showcase for her supposed mastery of the machinery and wonky details.
Obama is doing it because people who've never seen him in one before come out impressed by his demeanor and by how "presidential" he looks and sounds, especially when Hillary cranks up the drama. Demonstrating steadiness and calm in the face of extremely irksome verbal assaults is the best means he has of tamping down this "commander in chief" crap.
So yeah, believe it or not, there are people in the country who haven't watched all or most of them. But dear God, I really think I'm going to have to watch Mythbusters and the WPT and just do a gaffe check after they're over. I's hads all I can takes and I can takes no more of these things.

You know, I am going to take the opposite position to many here. The Health Care part of the debates have been the most substantial part. Sure they are boring and wonkish, but I'd rather have voters decide based on that rather than who can "Reject and Denounce" the most.
I'd rather here about:
Their economic plans... Stance on regulations to prevent lead containing toys... Global Warming... Housing crisis... Energy plans... Crumbling U.S. infrastructure... National debt... Middle East...
Instead of:
Ferraro... Powers... Why blacks vote Obama... Why whites vote Clinton... Who will be who's vice president... Who is the Iranian Intelligence Minister and what's his date of birth

And then afterwards -- since the pledged delegate count won't change by very much -- they can hold hands, skip off the stage -- all the way to Obama's inauguration ceremony.

This is very good! Seriously. I was so down about all the race-baiting I was about to make myself stop caring this morning ... when I realized that the best thing that could happen would be for Hillary to instigate and instigate over the next several weeks (a cinch) so that especially the more conservative, lower income PA voters are thinking he's the devil or something..... and THEN have a debate. There is NO WAY this fellow looks or acts or talks like they are going to be imagining ... and Hillary having to make nice (which she will have to) is going to make her look two-faced. I'm delighted .. even more delighted that he 'raised' her one by agreeing to the NC debate as well. Guess she'll have to trash those 'he's afraid to meet me' ads that she used in Ohio. Too bad.

Obama's debating skills have gotten progressively better each time out. The last time out he looked smooth and presidential while she looked lost and slightly awed by the man sitting next to her. Moreover, after all the work she's done to smear him as an unqualified Affirmative Action hire, she's giving him a chance to humanize himself before the PA electorate.
He called your bluff and raised you, Monster. What now?

A Modest Proposal:
During the debate, after Hillary has gone off on one of her usual shout-talker rants, Senator Obama should turn to her and say.....Aw Geez, Stifle yer self Edith!
That should win some of them over.

Obama should insist that he gets to sit in an old, ratty La-Z-Boy, from which he interrupts Hillary's opening statement to say, "Can you close your piehole long enough to bring me a beer?"
Instant 10-point swing in Pittsburgh.

Good point, Leroy. She will also be forced to be at least somewhat civil to him during the debates, which makes it harder for her to go nuclear on him before/after without looking hypocritical (again).

Oh goody. I hope I can learn more about their respective positions on health care. They haven't quite cleared it up for me. They should have accepted the science debate on April 18, 2008 in Philadelphia. http://www.sciencedebate2008.com/www/index.php?id=20
They could expand the conversation and voters could make decisions on different issues. Or not.

Actually, a debate could be useful if the moderators and the candidates could get off of the differences between Clinton and Obama's respective health care plans.
How about asking the candidates when it is appropriate for the president to use signing statements?
When should executive privilege be asserted and how far down the staff can it be extended?
What is their position on oversight by the legislative branch?
What are their positions on "enhanced interrogation techniques"?
What (if anything) are they going to do to reverse the damage Bush has done to the Constitution.
Will they reverse any of the executive orders given by Bush?
There are a lot of interesting topics and questions that as far as I know have never been addressed in the debates.

I'm not sure I follow you here. You make it sound like a debate is supposed to be some sort of airing of the candidates' respective viewpoints on salient issues.

Argh! I think all of the people who voted for Clinton in Ohio & Texas instead of letting us end this damn thing should be forced to watch these debates with Clockwork Orange toothpicks propping their eyelids open.
The end result will still be the same and yet we are subjected to a couple more months of bickering and who knows how many more debates.
Of course I will still watch in spite of myself...

That was very funny. Yep, I blame the people in texas and ohio that bought into the archie bunker strategy. This thing is soooo over, but she won't go away until they drag her off in a straight jacket kicking and screaming. "I want another debate, I want another debate."

The Obama Fan Base would prefer to avert its collective eyes from the spectacle of their guy losing again.
I mean, the last time Obama claimed he was "in the midst" of a "high stakes" race for the U.S. Senate when he made his Iraq speech in October 2002. Trouble is, he didn't actually declare until January 2003.
So, I can see why the OFB would want to make sure that their guy wasn't put in a position where he would actually have to speak spontaneously, but unlike the denizens of this thread, the voters actually like debates.
Hey, I've got an idea! Maybe they could give Obama an ear bud? Like they did with Bush?

Tonight, when you meet Margaret Houlihan in the supply tent, tell her that you used the word "denizens" in a post.
I bet you'll get an extra hickey.

Amazing quotation:
Yeah, if OH and TX had just held caucuses, everything would have been fine. As it is, those pesky voters uses their super secret ballot powers to deny us the victory in a democratically run election!

I am as sick as anyone else here of the already 20 debates between the two. But I think it is to Obama's advantage to accept a debate in PA. Even though Obama is ahead in the primaries as a whole, he is polling well behind Hillary, in Pennsylvania, so the risk-reward ratio is in his favor, i.e., he has more to gain than lose.
With a good showing he can narrow the gap just a couple of days before the election if not actually pull ahead.
The other factor is that he has been getting better and better with each debate, while Hillary has developed a kind of schizoid persona -- which in a way makes her more dangerous, but also hurts her credibility. A couple of nice zingers by Obama would do more good than a whole lot wonkiness by Hillary. If Obama can show some flashes of wit and humor, the they will see that he does not have horns after all. He should also brush up on the many black sports heroes from Philly and Pittsburgh and find a smooth way to drop some names. Why the hell not?

how many 1:1 debates have their been between BO & HC? Hmm ... whatever.

I don't really mind more debates, because it allows Hillary to serve the only meaningful role she has left in the party ... Obama's batting practice for McCain.
Obama wasn't a particularly strong debater at the first, but he's progressively gotten better over time and more than held his own in Austin. I'm looking forward to what happens when he stops being so polite and diplomatic and starts going on the offensive. Can't wait to hear how he challenges Hillary on how her supposed foreign policy experience and re frame the narrative, since the MSM doesn't appear to have the balls to do it.
Mrs Clinton it's time to answer, once and for all, what exactly was your role Mr. Sinbad in the Kosovo peace process? And who played the Good Cop/Bad Cop role in the negoations .. you or Sinbad?

NOT TO MUCH FOR THESE DEBATES!
DOWNSIDE FOR CLINTON!
UPSIDE FOR OBAMA!
IT IS THE KITCHEN SINKS PROBLEMS!
THANK YOU FERRARO, YUGO GIRL!
CLINTON FORCES THE ISSUE MORE SINKS!
MORE SINKS IN DEBATE?
OBAMA MAY REACH NEW LEVELS IN HIS ORATORY
HE HAS THE SKILL! SINKS ARE HEAVY!
IF THESE TWO COLLIDE IN A DEBATE?
BYE CLINTONS!
Simply, Clinton has been skating on thin ice for too long; have not been one who believed she performed well in the debates as she is too often trite and overreaches when it is totally unnecessary. Obama is not as great a speaker as is often suggested, many public official were as capable as he( in his day Teddy Kennedy was as good if not better), but in this era he has no peers. Moreso, he has an extraordinary grasp of the times that confront this county, here he has no peer who have focused on the primary need of the moment which is to focus on the common good as all move to the future.
As Clinton's kitchen sinks collide with Obama's oratory on the future, the odds favor the future.
The narrative and meme crap, forget about it. It is time to move on! Nope! It ain't Obama, it is that folks are tired of the Clintons. Tomorrow calls.
Do note the s after sink!!!!!!!!

I would enjoy a debate if they would find some new topics!
I suggest some issues with meaning to city dwellers like myself such as reducing crime without reducing civil liberties.
How the systematic divestment in older communities in favor of new ones has increased sprawl and concentrated poverty.
Any one have new ideas on how to reduce number of illegal guns without restricting the ownership of illegal ones?
New ideas on education? prison reform? drug laws?
I bet there are some other issues related to health care besides health insurance.
And what about things like food safety, preservation of local agriculture?
And seniors -- PA has the second highest percentage of senior citizen's in the country and unlike Florida, and they are much less affluent. Any new ideas on caring for the elderly?
As a Philadelphian, I'm not looking forward to six weeks of sniping and rehashing the minutue of policies.

In the next debate Obama has to be asked about his relationship with the Racist Rev. Jeremiah Wright. This guy married him baptised his children is his spiritual advisor and close friend
and his clearly one of the biggest racist's in America. He says blacks should not sing "God Bless America" but "God damn America." In addition to damning America, he told his congregation on the Sunday after Sept. 11, 2001 that the United States had brought on al Qaeda's attacks because of its own terrorism.
This guy is as Racist as they come.

We don't choose our family, but Obama chose this blatent Racist as his pastor for decades. It clearly reflects very poorly on Obama's judgement as much as his close friendship with Rezco.

It's a trap.
A trap, and yet another instance of Hillary snapping her fingers for a debate and Obama showing up. Obama! What you should have said is, "Not this time, sunshine."
Some say it's just her way of getting free tv coverage. I say it's that plus she is up to something. She will spring it on him in one of her responses, and even before she's completed the sentence he will know he should have stayed home.
Don't go, Obama.

I disagree. I'm convinced that he can handle anything she throws at him. Remember his serene putdown of her rabid insistence that he "denounce and reject"? Utterly spontaneous, entirely devastating.
Since SNL is now all the rage in this campaign, very much to Hillary's obvious joy, it's too bad that a double standard would tar him if he adopted one of the classic, longrunning SNL debating lines:
"[Hillary], you ignorant slut."
Can't be done.

I think debates are a great idea.
Hillary Clinton's resume-padding is finally getting some scrutiny.
Her purported role in SCHIP is particularly exaggerated.
There are records. There are campaign speeches.
Clinton played no role in SCHIP, although she claims credit for it. In fact, Bill Clinton tried to scuttle it.
