CNN Poll: Obama Above 50% Nationally Against Hillary, Respondents Split On Super-Delegates

A new CNN poll gives Barack Obama the national lead against Hillary Clinton, with a full 52% majority for Obama against 45% for Hillary. This is the first national CNN poll where Obama has broken 50%, though their last poll predated Super Tuesday.

From the internals: Obama and Hillary each to well with demographics that have trended their way in recent primaries: Young voters, men and Dem-leaning independents for Obama, and women, older voters and whites for Hillary.

On the question of super-delegates, a narrow plurality of respondents sided with the Clinton campaign's argument — 49% said supers should vote based on who they think is the best candidate, compared to 46% who say supers should follow the primaries and caucuses.

If 50% of the superdelegates decide to follow the will of the voters, then it won't matter what those other superdelegates do. Even if they go to Hillary overwhelmingly, Obama will get the most superdelegates overall.

Yep. Exactly. Another problem is that a lot of Hillary's SD are based in loyalty. As it becomes increasingly clear 1) she's losing 2) that voting trends are against her, confidence and loyalty towards her will fall significantly. Nobody wants to back a loser.

Wow.

Is this the same CNN that torched Obama Friday night?

"Will you sing 'God Bless America' now?"

and while you're at it, do a little dance, too.

It's also the same CNN where last week Anderson Cooper was following Chelsea around on the campaign trail . . . and this week he's out shilling with Bill. I guess fair and balanced coverage means giving equal ass-kissing time to all of the Clintons.

Well, that's odd in light of the other polls. I thought it was before the wright stuff broke, but it was after. Very odd. The poll was from the 14th to the 16th.

It is possible that the Wright story has had a positive effect on Obama. After all, nobody paying any attention at all believes Obama is a Muslim any more.

We've all got a crazy or two in our address books!

McCain/Clinton '08!!!!!!!!!!!

This is what happens when we vote for people who believe in supernatural beings. And this is one sticking point that will always make me question every other aspect of someone's character, and in Barack's case, "judgement".

There you go, America, you get what you vote for.

Eric, I believe you, and possibly the poll itself, have slanted the false dichotomy of alternatives a tad, which has been, for Hillary, more about: best candidate = vague 'electability', and/or best candidate = undeterminable 'popular vote' taker.

It is likely that a bunch of respondents to the poll simply consider 'winning the primary contests does equals the best candidate'. So the poll question placement and actual wording is important. How many respondents understand the differences conceptually?

Regardless, as of now there doesn't seem to be a dash for the exits by the Democratic party. Let's see this big speech tomorrow. I doubt he'll be able to turn this thing into a positive. But he may be able to limit the damage, which would be pretty damn impressive given that the sky was falling on Friday. Fingers crossed.

But...but...I thought Obama was finished?

Let us not forget that Obama has picked up 10 SDs since OH and TX while Hillary has picked up 1 (with a net of zero with Spitzer getting spitzed).

THIS IS EXCELLENT NEWS!! FOR HILLARY!!!
!!!HILLMENTUM™!!!!

I was practically shreiking at the TV when I saw that too. Bark like a dog for me senator! Are you now or have you ever been...

Geeze, Anderson Cooper was an idiot.

when CNN starts to look like Fox News (Obama went on Fox, too), you know you've entered la-la land.

user-pic

These polls are so pointless. Poll the remaining states or STFU.

This whole "controversy" is just silly, especially when it's based on such overblown distortions of Rev. Wright's philosophy. On the other hand, it clears up the "radical Muslim" meme pretty thoroughly, so there's the silver lining.

Regardless, I sure hope those blowhards Hannity & O’Reilly aren’t still going after Obama on this, because all I have to say to THEM is this: If you're going to play this guilt-by-religious-association game (a game we could play all day, every day, with pretty much anyone who has ever attended any religious institution anywhere), how can YOU sit in a pew week after week in a church that institutionally covered up child molesting? That’s a damn sight worse than a few hotheaded sermons from a respected theologian! (I say this as a Catholic with very strong feelings about the flaws in the Church.)

BTW--I assume the bit about singing "God Bless America" is a joke, because if it's not, Anderson Cooper is dead to me. That would suck.

Reeps are loving this. They know if Obama get the nod they can come out full guns blazing with all the crap that is flying below the radar of the typical people polled.

Once again the Dems engage in a circular firing squad.

Sad.

what would you recommend we do?

Reeps = Clinton supporters! No need to wait for general election. The architecture of the Obama smear has been manufactured and brought to you by Bill and Hillary Clinton!

McCain/Clinton '08!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ready on Day One and Day Two!
After that, you're on your own!

Here's what I find significant:

"The CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll was conducted by telephone March 14-16"

This is during the peak of the Wright controversy saturating the airwaves. Despite another poll saying 56% less likely to vote for Obama because of this, it doesn't appear to have really made a significant dent in his national numbers.

Eric:

"each to well with demographics that have trended their way in recent primaries: Young voters, men and Dem-leaning independents for Obama, and women, older voters and whites for Hillary."

It's funny that you and all the commenters so far have failed to point out the obvious bias here: you don't mention that Obama is doing very well among African-American voters. Come on! Is that plain fact really so unmentionable?

If we're ever going to have post-racial politics in America, we're going to have to get past the point where Eric and other commenters reflexively omit any mention of race (or at least the preferences of black voters) because they are so afraid of being accused of playing "the race card".

Gallop today:

Clinton 47%
Obama 45%

Far more accurate, there is irreparable being damage with 24/7 Reverend Wright.

Statistically insignificant. Within the margin of error.

Thank you, come again!

Hey, the "far more accurate" poll is the one I prefer, not the one you prefer.

I think you misunderstood him.

"Far more accurate" just means "agrees with what I perceive to be reality."

ICECREAMCONEHEAD TROLLING IS EXCELLENT NEWS!! FOR HILLARY!!!

What happened to Hillary's lead on Gallup?!

It had barely gone cold on my plate when this new, far more accurate poll from CNN -- Clinton surrogates, no less! -- gives a seven-point lead to Barack!

I tell you, this woman has no staying power. Or should that be parsed? Yes. The more she loses power, the more she stays.

Whatever, there's no question that a pattern has developed over the past few weeks. Whenever Clinton rises from the dead and begins to look like she might still have a chance, independents as well as a swelling number her own supporters hear the ringing, wake up, realise it's 3 a.m. and pass the phone quickly to Obama.

Yeah, yeah. It's great that you have the inside scoop on irreparable damage being done. Or maybe you just left out the words "I hope" prior to that last sentence, which is pretty hard to decipher anyway.

I guess that's all some folks have left. Personally, I keep hoping for at least some voters being less gullible, and more willing to focus the issues which really matter in this election. Even though I'm not religious, I can still hope.

Hm. We have RaeK, and Aimey May, and now there's Marginal Player - or Mr. Softee Head, as I prefer to dub it. (BTW: always refer to trolls as "it"; don't let them have a gender for free; make them argue it.)

It's trite to point out grammatical errors in blog posts that are really just typos. But in the above post by Marginal Player, I think it's pretty evident that this person has problems with basic English.

The misspelling "Gallop" could come from a spell checker. But it's a long way from what's written ("Far more accurate, there is irreparable being damage with 27/7...") to "According to the far more accurate [poll], X is being irreparably damaged [by] 24/7 [coverage]..." This string of words is produced using grammar rules that are different from standard English.

In other words, Marginal Player is fairly intelligent - for some one locked in a Punjabi boiler room, getting paid by the blog post.

Outsourcing trolls. Have the Clintons no decency? No decency at all?

I am beginning to think that the Clintons' end will come not with a bang but with a whimper

This Obama speech tomorrow needs to work.

It cannot come across as more of the same defensive excuses and incredulous BS about not knowing Wright's view until last week. No one is buying that.

No, it has to rise above and beyond that.

It has to acknowledge the racial wounds of the past, the divisiveness and hopelessness that still prevail in inner cities and the poor everywhere, black and white.

Yes, he has to acknowledge he heard all that angry remarks, and even more.

But then, he has to pivot that into a message about national healing and unity and hope. About putting all that behind. About making King's dream come true.

He nees to rally people again into putting the red state blue states thing behind. About black American vs. White America.

He needs to give a presidential speech on uniting the country and on't let bigots divide us anymore.

He should also pivot into talking about poverty and economic struggles as his top priority in domestic policies, and healthcare fits into it.

But the main thing for the speech is the healing and uniting part.

Obama is a great orator. He can do it. He cannot dodge the racial wounds issue any longer if he were to become strong in November.

I like the way you headline this favorable CNN poll for Obama, but not the USAToday/Gallup polls showing him in a downward trend on all fronts. CNN polls have always been way off the mark. There in the tank for Obama.

Actually, I find the more disturbing polls to be the vs McCain polls. They are the ones showing a drop since the Wright business came up. Which makes sense since I think Repubs are generally are more concerned about patriotism & more race driven than Dems. Frankly I don't think most dems give a rats ass about any of this - they want to know what the heck these people are going to do about the economy & find a solution to the Iraq cesspool.
Fortunately the general is a ways away. Will come back up but Obama will be in a better position to deflect.

This is also the same CNN that, as part of their Spitzer coverage, aired a piece on Anderson Cooper last Wednesday evening that re-created (staged) the "prostitute" walking down the hallway of the "hotel", re-created (staged) the handover of the cash, and re-created (staged) a shot of the prostitute sitting on the bed waiting for her client. Unfortunately, they forgot to turn down her audio in the editing room and the viewer could clearly hear the "prostitute" asking how "high" the videographer was shooting her. Of course none of this "footage" was identified as a "dramatization". This one seemed to have slipped by all the journalist watchdog groups out there...Where have all the ethics gone?

We will all have a better feel after tomorrow's speech from Obama, but, I don't think this is going to have a lasting effect. Remember, his supporters are young people who will give him the benefit of the doubt, more likely to investigate the media charges via the net, and less impressionable from Pastors. Also, his other base is college educated people that are more intelligent, and again more likely to see this Wright thing as a political distraction. College educated voters will be more aware of diverse backgrounds and different cultures as well. I think he will be able to rise above this unless the media turns it into a Swiftboat 24/7 replay for the next two weeks. In that case, it will be like the Dean Scream and they will all apologize two years from now for their reprehensible part in destroying his campaign.

Mr. Kleefeld;

This is a sincere question from someone who has conducted polls but is nevertheless confused by the general election "matchup" polls we keep reading about. I am worried because I believe the superdelegates may actually use them as a tool of measurement at some point.

A poll, of course, is only as good as its sample is representative of the folks who will actually vote. Of course, polls this far out are of dubious value anyway, but beyond that there is a bigger concern.

The one thing we know for sure about November is that Obama and Clinton will not only perform "differently" as against McCain (based on their relative strengths) but that they will actually draw a very "different" turnout. For example, Obama can be expected to draw a higher degree of young and black voters, and perhaps some extra independents. Clinton may draw more women and blue collar voters to the polls, etc. The nomination of either will certainly alienate some of the loser's supporters and cause them to stay home.

However, these matchup polls, as I understand them, use the same exact sample when testing each candidate, and make the same assumptions about the make-up of the voters.

Shouldn't this make the sampling margin of error huge? Aren't we comparing apples and oranges? I'd appreciate if someone knowledgable would actually try to explain this in this thread.

Does that mean CNN was for the Wright stuff before they were for the right stuff?
