Whoopsie! Moderator Accidentally Plays Unflattering Hillary Clip
Hmmm. Maybe this will give the Hillary camp a bit of grist for their media-is-out-to-get-us theory.
Brian Williams told the audience that he was about to play a tape of some Obama hyperbole, presumably as a set-up to ask a tough question about it. But then he accidentally played a clip of Hillary delivering her recent sarcastic denunciation of the messianism of Obama supporters, something that attracted a bunch of criticism.
And, of course, Obama jumped on the opportunity, using it to hit Hillary for denigrating his actual accomplishments, throwing in a dose of humor, too: "Well, I thought Senator Clinton showed some good humor there. I’d give her points for delivery."
She really can't catch a break, can she...

Much ado about nothing. They were going to play that clip anyway, and followed with the Obama clip.
Still, I bet a tech in the truck got his ass chewed over that one.

She's having a little trouble with the tax return question....

Unless you realize that Sen. Obama had to respond to the question, rather than Sen. Clinton.
Looking at it that way, Clinton dodged a bullet.

She visibly blushed when asked about her tax return.

Eventually that moment will be revisited, there may be smoke there and fire.

Greg, Brian Williams said to Obama "you have recently been called out on (some hyperbole) yourself; I urge you to look at your monitor and we'll take a look."
At which point they played a clip of Clinton calling Obama out for (supposed) hyperbole.
He did not say he was about to show a clip of Obama being hyperbolic. He said he was about to show a clip of Obama being called out for (supposedly) being hyperbolic.
You've seriously misinterpreted this.
And please stop posting new debate-related threads every time you would otherwise make a comment if you weren't able to start threads. Doing so actively interferes with discussion.

Zell, Brian Williams himself conceded that they'd screwed up. please.

Noone's denying that MSNBC screwed up. What's in question is whether the screw-up hurt Sen. Clinton, as you suggested above.
In fact, it helped her. It meant Obama got to take the sting out of what was set up to be a gotcha question.

He did Zell - right before he finally played the Obama clip he said something about playing the wrong clip.

he did but i got the impression they were going to show the clip later on in the debate...basically it was just out-of-sequence.

Why are we all posting HERE about the debate, when there's a live blog just 2, 3, or 4 posts just below this new thread?
Just curious.

Milestones in the narrative, turning points when there is a reason to focus again on the twists and turns.
But your right this isn't like a close football game with the score change happening often.

Wow, Hillary, all of a sudden "words" count - this ridiculous nonsense about rejecting vs. renouncing is so stupid. Obama absolutely cut her down to size with his response to her and took the wind completely out of her sails - it was pretty slick.
I tell you, she's having a horrible night - and not only because I'm an Obama supporter. I actually feel embarrassed for her. Her answer about her tax returns was absolutely abysmal. She was visibly shaken by that question and had no answer. I wonder what she must be thinking when she's looking at him during the time he's talking: "Shit, I am finished. I can't keep up with this guy..." Even her zingers have no sting in them anymore - it seems that after the first break (when she came back a little late) all of the fight went out of her and someone in her campaign told her that she was toast.

OMG, he just turned that little "reject and denounce" comment on HRC...That was a low blow for hillary, i cant believe she went there with the Luis Farakan rebuttal...She is looking to have the last word on every question even if it makes her look stupid, but BO totally slapped it back in her face...

Chalk it up to solidarity among folks named Greg, but I think that you are doing a fine job, Mr Sargent. Regardless of what others say, I like your approach to live-blogging the debates.

What debate is Greg Sargent Watching. All he writes about is Hillary and Tim Russert. Did Senator Obama not show up for the debate!

Right before he played the Obama tape he said, "We've got the right tape cued up now."

Looks like Obama needs a simpler answer on the "Farrakhan question" (he played it well but it took a bit long.) How about this:
I have repeatedly renounced Louis Farrakhan and others' anti-semitism and other hate speech. If Mr. Farrakhan has chosen to support my candidacy, I can only hope that it is because I have been able to convince him and others that hate is not the answer and change his mind about the Jewish people and that he in time works to become as staunch a supporter of equality as I am.
(Also, way to be classy there, Clinton. Sheesh.)

Obama has improved each performance in the debates, Hillarys started horribly, the worst 30 minutes at the start I have ever seen.
All 101 college students do a public presentation and then watch themselves on video.
That will be tough for Hillary in her first third of this debate.
No knockout for Hillary, Obama is now in true momentum. Hillary is at the start of meltdown.
This was historic, great questions, best crowd, best debate to date.

Obama is *DEFINITELY* getting better at debates, and was very strong on foriegn policy, and in replying to several attacks by Hillary Clinton that were frankly, unncessarily divisive and harmful for the future of the Democratic Party.
It takes a fighter to destroy a village.

Obama gave Hillary a huge break. He had an opening after they showed the sarcastic shrieking clip (did you see how embarassed she looked after they cut back to the debate?), and he kindly showed her pity by saying she was "having fun".
He took the high road and left her by the wayside looking desperate, pathetic and shallow. It was one of his best moments tonight.

I don't see how this is grist for the mill of Clinton's complaints about the media. They clearly had both clips cued up and were going to show them both as part of the "hyperbole" segment, but simply showed the wrong one first.

I thought Obama missed a chance to correct the record on the campaign finance "pledge" he supposedly "signed." Obama never agreed to limit himself to public financing in the general election. He should have told Russert plainly that he didn't have his facts straight, and was simply repeating a right-wing talking point. Instead, Obama simply defended the idea of pursuing an agreement with McCain, and left himself open to the McCain campaign's continuing baseless attacks.
Obama also fumbled in describing McCain's current FEC woes, missing an opportunity to point out that McCain seems to be having a big problem with both the letter and spirit of McCain-Feingold.
