Tennessee GOP Smears Obama With Alleged Ties to Anti-Semitism and Farrakhan

Two days ago, the Tennessee Republican Party put out a press release entitled "Anti-Semites For Obama," accusing "Barack Hussein Obama" of being anti-Israel and linked to Louis Farrakhan. And just to sweeten the deal, they included the picture of Obama in native African clothing:

(Click picture to enlarge.)

State party chair Robin Smith defended the release to the Knoxville News Sentinel, despite the fact that John McCain has asked his supporters not to use such attacks in the wake of the Bill Cunningham flap.

"John McCain has to be elected. Robin Smith doesn't," Smith said. "We have a duty to inform the Republican base."

Just you watch, the RNC is going to turn themselves into the party of racists and xenophobes. It won't be pretty, especially for them when only a handful of Republicans hold office.

user-pic

Yes, it could be that a lot of Republicans believe they are already screwed for the fall, so have decided to pull out all the racist, fanatical and xenophobic stops, and go out in a hail of bullets and a blaze of wingnut glory.

user-pic

"Turn" themselves into the party of racists and xenophobes? A percentage of the party already are!

What a disgrace! This is going to cut very deeply into McCain's independent voter base - I really don't think they are going to be comfortable with this kind of thing.

user-pic

I think this is going to be their main strategy.

Essentially, we'll see the gop 'southern strategy' go national-- but it's going to be with the viciousness occurring just barely under the radar, so that McCain can disavow it, and with subtle comments in the mainstream, so that he can benefit from it. This can play out two ways: unite the country around Obama, or set the country back 30 years in race relations.

I'm an optimist, so it's hard for me to see the latter happening, but it's going to get very ugly in the meantime. I believe it will attempt to be the most vicious and divisive campaign that we've seen in some time, and will be undertaken almost entirely by C-list surrogates and outside organizations. (Which is another reason for McCain to opt in to public financing, to direct any donations in that direction.)

This, to me, is why McCain apologized for the warm-up remarks the other night-- he has to stay clear of this, in order to pick up moderate voters, and he has to be clear of it well before it gets really nasty.

This is also why Bush said he is confident of a republican win this fall, saying he understands the "mentality" of Americans-- in other words he assumes we live in a country that will never elect a black man, but Bush, as an official party member, can't say that quite so directly, again for fear of alienating deluded moderates in the fall. That has to come from Hannity, Limbaugh, new swiftboat groups, and other "unofficial" GOP operatives.

The Tennessee GOP is apparently the only group that hasn't gotten the message, maybe because they see a different dynamic playing out locally.

user-pic

Whatta you mean turn themselves into racists and xenophobes. They have been the party of racists and xenophoes since the 60's. Remember the southern strategy, race baiting, welfare queens that didn't exist, now its islamo-fascists that want to take over the world, nothwithstanding the fact that they don't even have transportation to get over an ocean. Finally, hopefully america is waking up from its long racist slumber.

innacuracies? check
logical fallacies? check
insane fear-mongering? check

looks like typical GOP attack politics.

You hit the name on the head.

Disgusting? Certainly. Significant? Probably not. The TN primary is already over and Obama already lost. Meanwhile, Al Gore was not able to carry TN, so I rather doubt that Obama ever had much of a chance there anyway. I suppose that it is possible that this will have some effect on the down ticket races, so it does not hurt for the campaign to respond, but in the end I expect that this will prove to be mostly wasted effort.

Were they worried that Obama might chip into their standing with bigots?

user-pic

This is the funnest comment I've read today. Thank you. :o)

Feel free to contact the TN GOP at:

http://www.tngop.org/contact/

I sent them the following letter:

Ms. Smith,

I was offended by your deeply dishonest smear of Senator Obama. I believe you have done your party a great disservice. You have also contributed to the unfortunate stereotype of the racist, fear mongering southern conservative politician. I have just contributed another $50 to Senator Obama's campaign as a consequence of your actions, and I am even more energized to defeat your candidate this fall. Thank you for reminding me again what America does and does not stand for, and I look forward to the day when your children and grandchildren renounce your words in the same manner that George Wallace, segregation, and lynching is renounced today.

Wow! Thanks! That is exactly the sort of positive, directed response I hardly ever seem to see or hear enough of. Thank you for sharing that - you brightened my day!

Those who are inclined can contact Robin Smith here:

I guess Eric like this story so much, it had to be printed twice in the same post.

This isn't new, and is to be expected. Obama has done his best to get out in front of stuff like this, so the only people that'll buy into it are the ones that this tool from the Tennessee Republican Party call his "base".

Or in other words, the bitter and hardcore racists that wouldn't vote Democrat under any circumstances. Stuff like this IMO is a net positive for Barack, as it further drives a wedge between independents and moderate Republicans that McCain has to spend time undoing. He can't win without his base, but it's increasingly clear that the hardcore GOP is going to be a problem for McCain this entire campaign.

In case anyone's wondering now that the post is formated correctly, Erik originally had the text and picture of this post printed twice back to back. Just having a little fun with that. :p

You have got to read this from their site:
http://www.tngop.org/wordpress/?p=100

With all due respect, they already are.

Yeah, and Hillary is probably saving the link so she can print up some fliers if/when she loses her ass on the 4th.

Look, I have no love for Hillary, but she's done now.

Can we please not link her to despicable Repug fliers?

Here here.

This is US History -- I see the globe right there.

Sigh. As a person adrift in Tennessee for 10 years now, you can knock me over with not surprise.

Seriously, this is an unbelieveably backward state when it comes to thinking, and the TN repub party is among the worst of the offenders. And, hey, that should come as no shock since we have already foisted Bill Frist and Fred Thompson on the rest of you poor bastards.

Anyhoo, sorry for them. They're idiots. And, correct, this state is deep red, no matter who gets the dem nom.

Tip of the iceburg. In this Presidential race the 21st century know nothings will show their true colors. Can this really help the republicans pull independents? I think not. The "hey, you're a giant bigot like me so vote for my guy" line is so passe.....I hope.

user-pic

Well, thank goodness Hillary legitimated these attacks!

Got to get that dig in on Hillary...if you watched the debate she actually helped Obama further distance himself from Farrakhan. People like you make me look for someone to cast my vote for in November.

user-pic

Not on purpose, she didn't. She tried to be shamelessly opportunistic, and it backfired on her in a big way.

Vote for who ever you want to. Stop trying to bully people with threats about how you will cast your single vote. Your vote counts for no more than anyone else's, so get over yourself.

user-pic

agree.

I thought only young republicans based their votes on the supporters instead of the candidates.

I think the only real effect stuff like this will have is drive independents away from McCain.

The people this type of mailer caters to weren't going to vote for Obama anyway.

I've been wondering for a while exactly how deep these smears have gone.

Wonder if there are any connections with the TN GOP and church group leaders like the one mentioned in this video:

http://theuptake.org/?p=500

turn themselves into?

user-pic

The smearing of Obama has not only appeared in GOP propaganda -- but also appearing covertly in what is considered Left US Jewish press... to the extent that Sen. Durbin had to write a defense/reply to the The Forward -- having to state the bloody obvious that Obama is a Christian and has always had strong and supportive ties to the Jewish community.

Thanks for the giving them the great idea Hillary...oh, I mean Hillary's campaign.

user-pic

Next thing you know the Repubs will be making anonymous phone calls asking folks would you vote for Barack Obama if you knew he had fathered a black child?

LOL

user-pic

Indeed.

user-pic

Amazing ignorance. Barack Hussein, Semitic names, meaning "Blessed" and "good" of Semitic origin, claiming anti-semitism, in a state and a political party where fundamentalist religion condemns the Jew to hell.
Here's a great commentary on Barack's name from Juan Cole, the Middle Eastern historian. He gives some great background and perspective on Semitic names of well known Americans.

I'll be curious to see what Congressman Steve Cohen has to say.

To my fellow Obama supporters -- and to all people who care about fairness and decency

There is an absolutely reprehensible mailing for the Tennessee Republican Party - the worst I have ever seen - that went out today

Even though this smear is mother's milk to Southern Republicans, I don't think it'll be enough to carry McCain to victory.

This will be great for the hardcore Republican base, but a deal breaker for Indies and triple-digit IQ Repub's who want a change in government.

Of course, I guarantee crap like this is an under-the-radar way to stir up some toothless freak to attempt a Hinkley-type move on B.O.

And McCain said that flying the Confederate Battle Flag should be left up to the State of South Carolina. He actually said that! How offensive is that? Not suprising when one considers his families ties to the Confederacy.

http://archive.salon.com/politics2000/feature/2000/02/15/mccain/index.html

user-pic

dude, I've got family ties to the confederacy, but I don't agree with him.

that's no defense.

user-pic

The important question is, how does Obama's campaign respond? This is clearly dishonest, and the scumbags who put out this garbage know it. The scary part is, they don't care.

This is Obama's first real test against a Swift Boat-style attack. I'll be interested to see how they handle it.

Who's afraid of Obama.

Nice to see that Karl's still keeping his hand in, consulting-wise.

Last night I was at a fundraiser here in LA, "Live for Sderot." It was a huge affair with celebrities, poor children from Sderot getting paraded around, and featured recorded messages from all three presidential candidates. Each appeared and stated their support for Sderot and for Israel in general.

Hillary's message was first. They announced her, and there was a big blast of applause and cheers. Her 45-second message plays. Applause and cheers.

Obama was next. Even bigger crescendo of applause, but it was quickly shouted down by a chorus of boos. He does his 45-second bit. Crowd is uncomfortably silent. You can tell there's a lot of disagreement in the Israeli community about him. (Why do the Israelis hate Obama?)

McCain is next. The crowd goes crazy. McCain gets 90 seconds for his response, double that of the other candidates. He basically swears allegiance to Israel. He finishes, and the crowd goes crazy.

So all three candidates are openly pro-Israel, but Israel is decidedly pro-McCain. Ironically, Obama was the only one who didn't mangle the pronunciation of 'Sderot.'

Wow, Obama's campaign staff are going to have a field day with this one.

Obama couldn't have engineered this better himself. These fools accomplish two things for the Obama campaign each time they erupt. First, they focus attention on how sleazy the GOP is and force McCain to repudiate them or be tarred as an accomplice. Second, the more we see this crap now, the more it inoculates Obama from the fever swamp. It'll make it much harder to smear him and should drive voters into his camp each time it happens. There are two bits of deliciousness here, too. Remember how whenever some troll posted something ugly on DailyKos the right wing would go ape shit and demand all Dems disavow it? Now the roles are reversed. And second, McCain's martyrdom in S.C. in 2000 and his campaign's attempt to rev it up again this year have conditioned the public to react with outrage to such things. Thanks St. John.

user-pic

Better than writing the RNC or TN Repubs - write to the McCain campaign and demand he condemn this (AND reject - okay Hillary?). And every time the Repugs do something like this contact McCain's campaign and repeat the process.

Make McCain police his own people/party.

BVD, thanks I emailed them and am spreading to my family and friends here in Texas.

I don't agreee with ADL Executive Director Abe Foxman on every issue, but it goes without saying that he is far more of an expert on anti-Semitism than Robin Smith. On the subject of Senator Obama and Minister Farrakhan, Mr. Foxman has already publicly stated that "[Obama] distanced himself and condemned it and rejected it . . . . What more do we want? On that issue we should move on." As a Jewish American, I strongly urge the GOP to move on, but am afraid they will just continue to drag our community down with them.

http://www.jta.org/cgi-bin/iowa/news/article/2008022720080227obamafarrakhandebate.html

user-pic

No Abe Foxman has not let go... Did you read all of the article?

It's disgusting the level that Foxman will go..

"...While Foxman said Obama had dealt with the Farrakhan issue, he mirrored the notion that the relationship with Wright was less likely to disappear. Foxman said he was unsatisfied with Obama's explanation at the meeting with Cleveland's Jews, in which Obama likened his pastor to a slightly dotty uncle who occasionally embarrasses...

Will the Jewish community condemn this type of fear-mongering or will the email smears continue?

We can thank Hillary for providing some smear material to the GOP.

She's doing a great job of bringing down the party if she can't win.

Funny thing. All the people who pointedly use Obama's middle name fall back on the "well, it IS his name" argument. And yet, I don't see any discussion of John McCain or HRC's middle name. Wonder why that might be?

Stay classy, TN.

Why all the coverage of Sderot lately, by the way? It's been in a lot of columns and articles lately. I agree that what's happening there is news, but I mean why all the focus in the last week or two? Any one know?

RNC= Racist National Committee.

If I saw the people who wrote this trash, I'd throw them a lead weight.

And I thought the Civil War ended in 1865.

The GOP doesn't need Hillary to supply smear material. The GOP is made of smear material.

Tennessee's the new Alabama. Or maybe Mississippi.

What about John Abizaid? He is part Lebanese and is fluent in Arabic. Does HE need to explain his name or his heritage?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Abizaid

I emailed the whole lot of them, expressing my hopes that some members of the state's party leadership see the press release for what it is and take action to remove the responsible parties from their posts.

some are perhaps innocents, so be polite!

user-pic

Seems to me the Obama has already positioned himself in the traditional media narrative well to respond to this sort of nonsense. He can simply point to this and say "this is the type of bitter, divisive politics left over from the 20th century that we are tired of, and we are rejecting."

The more mud they sling, the more they reinforce the central theme of the Obama campaign.

The lunatic fringe (on either end) is not going to determine the outcome of the election. Obama's movement is as much a repudiation of the polarization of politics as it is a repudiation of special interests, lobbyists, etc. I am not worried.

user-pic

John McCain will rue the day he took on the mantle of the Republican Party. It's become the hate everyone, love myself party.

user-pic

Filthy. But then again, how does this differ from Josh Marshall's smear of Obama on the front page of TPM, alleging ties with Kaddafi?

I realize Josh was trying to be funny, but it's really the same thing, isn't it?

I hope Josh isn't thinking about a career in comedy...

Actually, there is a lot of value in defusing-by-ridicule. If we can make all these guys look like (even moreso) over-the-top lunatic caricatures, their arguments will be quickly dismissed--and very importantly, dismissed without that lingering nag.

Nice work, Clinton campaign, in getting that picture out there! As others have noted, Penn only loses if Obama become President - his company is working for McCain's campaign, too. Going dirty on Obama will hurt the Dems, but it will help Penn.

http://archive.newsmax.com/archives/articles/2007/8/8/194812.shtml

It's not just Farrakhan's support that causes people to question Obama as the news article in the link above points out.

Dems will LOSE if Obama is nominee. Simple.

But by all means, continue to worship at the Obama alter and drinking at the Obama fountain sheeple.

Oh and let's not forget his wife's past telling statements.

You're such a silly...what's the word? Oh yeah, 'troll.'

mullingitover wrote: ...what's the word? Oh yeah, 'troll.'

Typical Obamamite. Say anything about their god and its "Wahhhh"!!!

And btw, I've got as much right to be here, to post my opinions as you do, troll.

Newsmax? Teh,heh.

In other news, how is Obama going to fare in the general now that he has surely lost the coveted WorldNetDaily endorsement?

Tennessee was not always like this. Albert Gore, Jr. -- Albert Gore, Sr. -- Howard Baker - Estes Kefauver - Cordell Hull.

Of course there is going to be a lot of ugliness in this campaign, but it shouldn't come from the candidates or the parties. People who might see through a flier like this from the "Anti-Obama Brigade" or "Tennesseans Against Terror" or whatever are going to give it additional weight because it's from the Tennesee Republican Party. Apparently the current Chairman is Mike Duncan and the Co-Chair is Jo Anne Davidson. Know nothing about either one

user-pic

When did Kaddafi stop being Qaddafi and start being Kaddafi?

Was it around the same time Peking stopped being Peking and started being Beijing?

Where was I when all this happened?

I was at the same place. Now if we could just get the time right maybe we can figure out where we were........

Wait--what if... QADAFFI IS BEIJING?!

user-pic

Okay, now we're getting somewhere... bear with me.

Using a telephone keypad - the International Standard version utilizing all 26 letters of our alphabet - lets convert letters into numbers - do the following equations:

Q-A-D-D-A-F-F-I + P-E-K-I-N-G = X

K-A-D-D-A-F-I + B-E-I-J-I-N-G = Y

Now multiply X times Y.

Next, multiply by the number 2008. Then take that total and divide by the number 1961 (you'll understand why we use that number in a moment).

The answer?

2-2-7-2-2-5-6-2-2-6-2

-or-

B-A-R-A-C-K-O-B-A-M-A

Who, need I add, was born in the year 1961.

Ladies and gentlemen, numbers do not lie.

So either the Tennessee GOP is now a fringe group, or Frist, Alexander and Thompson stand by this statement. I'd like somebody to stick a microphone in front of these guys and ask if they stand by it.

I work with a lot of Republicans (and yes, I've yet to jump off the roof), and they are the biggest bunch of racist, sexist idiots I've ever seen...well, I mean since the other Republicans I've met over my lifetime.

But the thing is, many are just out of touch. For example, these guys I work with are quite intelligent in terms of issues related to science (I'll leave it at that since I can't say much more w/o revealing an employer). We were talking a few months back about Jamaica (not sure how it came up), and Bob Marley's name was mentioned by a younger (not Repub) colleague. 4 out of 5 of that crowd had never heard of him! Bob Marley. Yes, Bob Marley. Never heard of the man. Zip. And these are guys born in the 50's and very early 60's, so its not like they were born well after he died. I guess what I'm trying to say is that many Republicans/right-wingers are ignorant about the world around them, and to make up for that fact, they turn to hate because its the easy way out.

user-pic

White supremicist David Duke said in an interview published today: "[I] don't see much difference in Barack Obama than Hillary Clinton--or, for that matter, John McCain."

That's pretty much an endorsement coming from the former head of the Louisiana KKK.

So Senator Obama - Do you reject his endorsement? Or do you condemn it? OR do you reject AND condemn it? OR do you reject, condemn and repudiate it? Or perhaps you should simply stop it - stop not rejecting, condemning and repudiating endorsements from these racists. Have you no shame sir? At long last have you no shame?

yawn.

There is nothing surprising about this mailer. Be prepared for just this sort of filth in the general election. John McCain will stay above it all, while the republican wolves will be out framing Obama as a Muslim Manchurian Candidate. We've seen this movie before.

The simple truth is that this sort of crap won't work with Obama. People actually like him when they get to know him. And the more hysterical the right-wing attacks become, the more marginalized they will be. In the immortal words of GWB: "Bring it on."

I am waiting for Joe Lieberman to stand up for Obama with respect to the latter's position vis a vis the American Jewish community, but it may be a long wait. Lieberman has of course already endorsed McCain.
In case people have forgotten, Obama endorsed Lieberman when Joe made his infamous run as an independent to win another term as senator in CT. Whether Lieberman considers that he owes Obama a favor is anybody's guess.
Why Obama endorsed Lieberman is a bit of a mystery but it may go back to the fact that Lieberman befriended the new young senator when he arrived in Washington.

Here's something from some quick research on Obama and Lieberman. From VichyDems. Maybe things have cooled off since Obama only endorsed Joe for the primary.

http://tinyurl.com/28y72j

"As to Lieberman being Obama's "mentor in the Senate"? Yes, he was. Every freshman Senator is assigned a more experienced mentor to help him learn the ropes, and when Obama was first elected to the Senate in 2004, Lieberman had been his party's vice presidential candidate in the previous Presidential election and was still well-respected. And Obama loyally endorsed Lieberman when Lieberman was challenged by newcomer Ned Lamont in the CT primary, which I didn't like, since Lamont was the better man; but once Lamont won the Democratic nomination and Lieberman decided to run against Lamont anyway as an Independent, Obama notably didn't endorse him; he stayed out of it."

Ooops! Wrong link! Let's try again.

http://tinyurl.com/25j7qc

I will give you the benefit of doubt since you only did "quick research." Otherwise I would just call bullshit.

Perhaps I just research a bit quicker since it took me about 8 seconds to find just this one article:

CBS, 10/27/2006:

emocratic Sen. Barack Obama, a vocal defender of Sen. Joe Lieberman earlier this year, is urging Connecticut voters to rally behind his rival, Ned Lamont. ... The Illinois senator and potential 2008 presidential candidate sent an e-mail message Thursday praising Lamont. ... "Ned Lamont has waged an impressive grass-roots campaign to give the people of Connecticut a choice in the November Senate election," Obama wrote. "Please join me in supporting Ned Lamont with your hard work on-the-ground in these closing weeks of the campaign."

And Ned Lamont also endorsed Obama.

The "mentor" angle goes clearly to the BS column since the clear implication is that Obama chose Lieberman instead of it just being an assigned pairing.

So lay that to rest, maybe?

user-pic

I suspect we have a new era in American politics. The more the GOP relies on the tactics of the DIXIECRATS, the more they push a Republican like me to vote for Obama.

http://OsiSpeaks.com or http://RealConservativesSpeak.com

At least Obama has never groveled before terrorists like the AWOL drunk, George W. Bush.

When Osama bin laden ordered US troops out of Saudia Arabia, the 'man' who cowered in a bunker on 9/11 responded with a firm, "Yes, Sir, Mr. Bin Laden, Sir". All US troops were removed from Saudia Arabia and our Air Force base was shut down.

All so a bunch of cowardly, serial draft dodgers can prattle about 'no attacks on US soil since 2001'.

The Tennessee GOP endorses the first US surrender since Corregidor. They are the party of treason.

Fine, and thanks for the additional research, but why so angry?

TN Republican Senator Lamar Alexander Should be ashamed of himself... Biggots shouldn't be Senators! Allowing his TN Rep Chair Robin Smith & Bill Hobbs communications director for the Tennessee Republican Party, to send out such a flyer is disgraceful!

Also posting stuff like this on Bill Hobb's Republican blogsite is beneath contempt...
quote...

" It can be guaranteed that the Islamic extremists who monitor our resolve and remain vigilant for opportunities to attack innocent Americans are “hopeful” that Barack Obama will be the next President. Their goal to remove the “filthy bacteria” (according to Iran’s Mahmoud Ahmadinejad) of Israel off the face of the earth will be much easier with either of these liberal, leftist Democrats/Progressives in the White House.

TN Republican Senator Lamar Alexander is up for Re-election in Nov 08 ... I just hope that the good people of TN show him the exit door in Nov.

Did everyone see the update they posted? This is even more hilarious than their pitiful attempts at bigotry:

*Clarification: This release originally referenced a photo of Sen. Obama and incorrectly termed it to be “”Muslim” garb. It is, in fact, Somali tribal garb, hence, we have deleted the photo. Also, in order to diffuse attempts by Democrats and the Left to divert attention from the main point of this release - that Sen. Obama has surrounded himself with advisers and recieved endorsements from people who are anti-Semitic and anti-Israel - we have deleted the use of Barack Obama’s middle name.

Holy sh*t that is some hilarious stuff. Send it around, they look like such idiots haha.

roo_p,

Is Ned Lamont the guy who ran on one issue -- The War -- against an establishment democrat who supported the war from the beginning and still does? In CT, right? And how'd that workout for Ned?

Unfortunately for the Obamites and their chosen one, they're about to learn what Hillary has learned over that last few months -- in america today it's definately more acceptable to be sexist and anti-Islamic than it is to be a racist.

Prediction: all those white males (democrats and independents) that just couldn't bring themselves to vote for Hillary regardless of how best qualified she is will flock to McCain in November and no one will know until it's over.

TN is the first; however, state republican parties tend to run in packs -- expect similar mobilization efforts in UT, ID, AK, LA, SC, AL, GA, ND,... This could put a real damper on all that red state appeal the chosen one is always droning on about.

So in a similar vein, could one write crazy stuff about McCain breaking under Vietnamese torture and selling out and is somehow not worthy of being president. How low can we go?

Thanks to Josh for the post tonight regarding the "multi channel" attacks on Obama. This is really going to be interesting. Will these nasty smears be effective? Or is Obama's broad based support really indicative of a country that wants to move beyond the "old divisions"? I see a real epic generational and ideological battle shaping up.....and I admit I am nervous about how it will turn out. As we all know, America has some serious skeletons in its closet, and this race is sure to bring them out.

Why the sudden attacks from the right against Obama? They want to help Hilary. They are afraid of Obama.

Shrubbit: You're not the target audience.

This type of stuff is one of the many reasons over the years that makes Americans wonder what type of country they live in.

Yet, folks have the nerve to question Michelle when she says for the first time she is REALLY proud of her country.

This is why. Shyt like this.

DISGUSTING

SHAMEFUL

HATEFUL

To fellow democrats and other level headed Americans, please do not tote the "THIS-IS-SO-PREDICTABLE" argument. By doing so, you provide tacit admission that this is ok. THIS MUST STOP NOW.

There are no qualifications or nuance to be appreciated in this press release. And to the author or authors of the press release- You are DISGUSTING for engage in the commerce of fear.

It is fundamentally IMMORAL.

user-pic

I have called this from day one that Obama was talked about as a potential candidate.

I think we haven't even seen the bottom yet, either. I think we'll be in November hearing that he's a potential Al-Qaida sleeper agent, or has affiliations with terrorism. As terrible as that thought it, I don't have any doubt that the republican party would sink to that if it was a means to the end.

And i'd go so far as to say that the only real reason that the RNC and McCain camp have resisted this type of talk is that they don't want to blow their load before it counts. Much like how it wouldn't have made any sense for the Swift Boat Veterans to come out with their smears of Kerry 9 months before the Election of '04.

And besides, the Republican party is damn smart enough to realize that smearing Obama in this way can completely be accomplished by right wing radio, party operatives, Fox, columnists, etc. You don't need McCain or Bush or anybody nearly that important spreading this stuff to get it out there.

Yes, as an ex-republican myself, I can see that the only people left in the party who are real republicans are a very small minority. The wacko extreme conservatives are in self-denial and out of touch with reality.
