Pro-Hillary 527 Ad: "It Takes More" Than Speeches

Here's the first ad from the American Leadership Project, the new pro-Hillary 527 group operating in Ohio:

The ad tells viewers that they should look past mere rhetoric, and examine Hillary Clinton's great record on the economy. "If speeches could create jobs, we wouldn't be facing a recession," the announcer says. "But it takes more."

Good to see the special interests getting involved. I would hate for them to not to be able to promote their candidate.

Hold it - I thought Bill worked with an offshore hedge fund. But she's against offshoring?

A Democrat Swiftboating another Democrat?

How sleazy. How Clintonian. How utterly predictable.

Clinton has nothing to do with this ad. This is a 527 completely independent of the Clinton campaign. They're just some independent citizens proud of the way Clinton has been fighting for the middle class. It was thanks to her hard work that we're not facing a recession.

I started to write a rejoinder to that, but then I realized he was joking.

Just a bunch of uber-millionaires proud of Hillary's support for the working class. Uh-huh. More kool-aid, por favor.

Not only does it take more than speeches, it takes a few hundred millionaires to join together to rescue your failed campaign! Huzzah! Fighter for the working class and stooge to the gilded class!

Hey Hillary,

Keep working on these solutions for the middle class... in the Senate.

O yeah this wont be good debate fodder for Obama.
Its hard not to smile just thinking about it.

HILLARY VS. OBAMA LEGISLATIVE RECORDS:
During Obama's first (8) eight years of elected service (in Illinois) he sponsored over 820 bills - 233 regarding healthcare reform, 125 on poverty and public assistance, 112 crime fighting bills, 97 economic bills, 60 human rights and anti-discrimination bills, 21 ethics reform bills, 15 gun control, 6 veterans affairs and many others. IN ADDITION, DURING HIS FIRST YEAR IN THE U.S. SENATE, HE AUTHORED 152 BILLS AND CO-SPONSORED ANOTHER 427. THESE INCLUDED:
*The Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006 (became law)
*The Lugar-Obama Nuclear Non-proliferation and Conventional Weapons Threat Reduction Act, (became law)
*The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act, (passed by the Senate)
*The 2007 Government Ethics Bill, (became law)
*The Protection Against Excessive Executive Compensation Bill, (In committee)
In all, since he entered the US Senate, Obama has written 890 bills and co-sponsored another 1,096. AN IMPRESSIVE RECORD, FOR SOMEONE WHO SUPPOSEDLY "HAS NO RECORD"
HILLARY CLINTON, WHO HAS SERVED FOR 6 YEARS IN THE U.S. SENATE, AND CLAIMS TO KNOW HOW TO "GET THINGS DONE" HAS MANAGED TO AUTHOR AND PASS NTO LAW ONLY TWENTY (20) PIECES OF LEGISLATION, ONLY FIVE (5) OF WHICH HAVE ANY REAL SUBSTANCE:
1. Extend period of unemployment assistance to victims of 9/11.
2. Pay for city projects in response to 9/11
3. Assist landmine victims in other countries.
4. Assist family caregivers in accessing affordable respite care.
5. Designate part of the National Forest System in Puerto Rico as protected in the wilderness preservation system.

Looks like they haven't figured out the website yet.

You call that a 527 ad? Where's the lies invented out of whole cloth? Where's the disgusting innuendo? The racial dogwhistle?

Now, I'm an Obama supporter, but, come on, this ad isn't so bad - it certainly isn't an "attack" ad. In fact, it's pretty mild, focusing mostly on Hillary's positives (plus, the statement "if speeches could create jobs..." is perplexing - what are they trying to say?) If this is as bad as it's going to get from this 527 then Obama has nothing to worry about.

If Clinton had any dirt that would really stick, don't you think she would have already used it in Wisconsin?

I'm coming to the conclusion that this 527 just means Clinton's run out of money and has decided to accept the (well deserved) criticism she's get for taking soft money through the 527, simply to run normal campaign ads.

Opening her "concession speech" last night with a call for donations looked a little desperate, no?

I think that's exactly it. She's run out of money, despite raising $15 mill in 15 days. I live in one of her firewall states (Texas) and I have heard three Obama radio ads and seen one Obama television ad this week. And that's only listening to the radio on the way to and from work and only turning on the TV a few times and flipping through the channels. And I live in Austin, which has the largest delegate allocation (proportionately) so she oughta be focusing here, although I think Obama's going to have a landslide (50,000 UT students for starters; huge anti-war sentiment).

I have heard zero pro-Clinton ads.

So can we expect that Clinton will not give any more speeches touting her solutions? And could some please point out her great record on the economy, cause I don't recall her taking the lead on any economic issues since she's been in the Senate.

Compare Hillery's and Obama's Tax Returns. O wait, we only have Senator Obama's tax figures released. Never mind.

Today we are announcing our new Senator Clinton for president Campaign Slogan. It will make you forget all about her opponent. Here it is:

WHAT HAPPENS IN RED STATES STAYS IN RED STATES.

I look forward to the daily memo from Mark Poison Penn.

This ad makes no sense if you take just a second to think about it.

Speeches don't create jobs. Sure, whatever. Hillary help passed one piece of legislation that was "pro-job." But, wait, and here's the confusing part... If speeches could create jobs we wouldn't be in a recession. I guess so, but then the add contradicts itself because it also implies that Hillary's legislation didn't create jobs and avoid a recession either.

So, we're in a recession and Hillary's supposed accomplishment in this ad didn't do anything to help.

She's toast, and these gazillionaires are just wasting good money they could have spent elsewhere.

the ad is well done, technically.

I don't really have a problem with its message. I'm now trying to start liking Hilary again by thinking what a ballsy, take-no-prisoners Senate Majority Leader she will be.

I'm trying to ignore the desperate millionaires funding this.

I think that it somewhat misses the point to play up the "it takes more than speeches" line in the title of this entry. I pressed the play button expecting to be galled, and instead I was mildly impressed by the substantive nature of the ad. If it really had been a disparagement of Obama's eloquence, I dare say I would have found the ad less persuasive.

Of course, I do not live in OH and I already voted for Obama in my own state, but I think that it is fair to say that if I were an undecided in OH, I think that this ad would help to sway me towards Clinton. It is a good ad. It is also not terribly negative at all, which augurs well for the future of this race. It is in everyone's best interest to keep this clean so that the eventual nominee does not emerge as goods-too-damaged to win in November.

I agree that it is a decent ad. And it keeps the 527 from looking like a sleazy group. And as you say, we need to keep the debate out of the gutter. We can't win in Nov with a fractured party. If Obama doesn't reign in 90-95% of Clinton supporters, he will be in real trouble vs. mccain.

meh.

Dems are their own worst enemy... Using a 527 against your own party... fools!

The Republican Freedowatch 527 is prepared to drop $250 Million Dollars against all Dems this 08. How the heck Clinton supporters waste the funds on a fellow party member is beyond me.

snip
The group aims to spend approximately $250 million for a 2008 cycle onslaught against the Dems, a vast amount of money they apparently plan to use not only on the presidential election, but to greater effect in numerous House and Senate races throughout the country, where six figures can go a long way.

To review the White House connections: the group is headed by Bradley Blakeman, a former Bush White House official, Mel Sembler, a millionaire former Bush admbassador to Italy, and Ari Fleischer, who serves as the group's spokesman. Much of its support so far has come from Sembler and casino magnate and billionaire Sheldon Adelson, the sixth richest person in the world.

Hillery's speeches are actually putting people out of work. Her speeches have killed the Sominex production industry.

This will be where Hillary ends up as their next President:

Obama needs to make that funding thing with McCain saying that there will be no 527's. If they still do 527's Obama wins and they don't then Obama wins.

user-pic

The ad does not matter. Obama is going to be nominated, unless he does something to mess it up---it is out of hillary's control. But the 527 format is a serious thing.

I am not sure just how Obama should handle this issue of 527's, but we already know from mcCain's loan shenanigan that he cannot be trusted regarding public financing. Obama should not be bullied into a bad deal with a disingenuous, crooked-talking McCain. As he has learned from Hillary----know the rules, but be ready to challenge the other side when they start breaking or abusing the rules.

I am sure his campaign will handle it appropriately.

user-pic

Well, I just got the clinton camp's message of the day. Now she is saying that democrats must "get real" about winning the presidency. Did she plagarize that from a ten year old? Or maybe its "just words." I can see that phrase on a monument in downtown dc right now "GET REAL, H. Clinton, 2/20/08."

Can the clintons' campaign get any sillier? I don't know if that's possible.

Hillary is now reduced to telling the voters, in the last ten states, who voted against her in overwhelming numbers that they do are not intelligent enough to make their own voting decisions, and at the same time she never even bothered to thank all the voters in those ten states who voted for her.

Since Hillery is running around the country insulting all the voters in the last ten Democratic State contests, why would any of them supporter her ever again.

user-pic

Along those lines liam, I guarantee if she is the nominee, dems can write off iowa, new hampshire and nevada (SC was probably out of the picture anyway), because she lied to those voters concerning michigan and Florida. She is pissing off voters in more than 1/2 the states in the country and she thinks in her wildest dreams that she could ever win in november. She is delusional.

How weak is that???

It's like they felt like they needed to do something to show their support...even though they knew it was a losing cause.

user-pic

Obama's response: NAFTA NAFTA NAFTA NAFTA NAFTA NAFTA and NAFTA some more.

Hillary is hardly one to talk about what it takes to create jobs.

But it is nice to see the 527s getting involved. I wonder how long till the "Obama is a muslim" ad goes on the air.

Great Ad!

Hillary in 2008!!

Let's look at the 890 bills that Obama cranked out in two years. There has got to be beef there. Talk about working hard for the people. Even assuming that he's been writing this legislation while away from Washington, as he has been for the past several months, he's writing more than two laws a day!

Unlike Senator Clinton who hasn't prevented the coming recession, Senator Obama has stopped the proliferation of weapons, solved the immigration problem, made government transparent, and made politicians ethical. I'm not an Obama fan, though I would vote for him in the general, but I would find it hard to argue for Hillary, in the face of his accomplishments.

Wow. What a freakin' waste of money that could have gone to the general election. Way to go!

"If speeches could create jobs, we wouldn't be facing a recession," the announcer says. "But it takes more."

And if Hillary wasn't such a control freak incompetent in 1993 we would not still be mired in a Health Care Coverage disaster fifteen years after Little Miss 21st Century Solutions Business made a total bollocks of it.

user-pic

Obviously this message has not worked. She has been saying the same thing for weeks and voters aren't buying it. She ought to take a time out, regroup with her advisers, and come up with something, anything. Repeating the same failed attack and message over and over and over again, seems (1) to be a waste of time and (2) falling within the definition of insanity.

user-pic

MikeMo, I can't tell if you need to smoke more crack or less.

user-pic

Seriously what is her economic record? Especially when you take into account her huge economic blunder in Iraq?

Plus her support for Indian outsourcing... Oh like the epidemic of all those telephone support calls winging their way over to her Indian corporate friends.

Let me tell you why Hillary's constant whining about Senator Obama's oratorical skills is not gaining any traction:

In a Nutshell:

People will always choose to listen to the song of Nightingale, rather than listening to the bitter squawking protests about it from the Crow.

If there's no operational link between the 527 and the Clinton campaign, where'd they get all that footage of Hillary? Surely it's not public domain.

user-pic

To be fair, it's three still shots, two of which seem to be fairly poor quality. I doubt it's too hard to acquire rights to photos of Senator Clinton.

Am I crazy or does this seem to be a particularly ineffective ad? It's whole tone -- from music to low key imagery -- is kind of wan and wistful, if not downright mournful. With different words, you could run it as an elegiacal piece for someone dead. Is it supposed to stir up sympathy for Sen. Clinton's dying campaign or convince the voter she has sympathy for them? Can't figure out the psychology of this ad at all. Love to know who produced it. Hope they were overpaid handsomely by these stupid people. I mean, not to speak in cliches but the Clintons are just turning up everywhre as just so yesterday.

user-pic

Yeah, bad ad. She's gotta try to steal some of obama's lightening in a bottle if she is going to make a contest out of this. People don't want to be more depressed than they already are. They want to hear about the bright tomorrow, the city on the hill, how wonderful everything is going to be under her stewardship. Something uplifting. The clintons' campaign is so politically tone deaf.

Expecting Hillary to be able to do that is like expecting a whoopee cushion to sing Danny Boy.

user-pic

Now that was funny. Thanks.

Somehow the 10's of thousands of people showing up at each Obama event just aren't getting the message! What's wrong with them???

This is a futile line of attack. Obama will play this game all day long.

What do people think of Obama's latest ad?

I am not convinced. Needs work. I'm very interested in what kind of reaction this gets.

Blog post here: http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/2008/02/obama-ad-counters-the-empty-su.php

It gets right to the point. People who want to study the specifics of Senator Obama's policy plans are directed to the website where they can read them. While they are there, many of them may also then contribute to his campaign for the first time. That kills two birds with one stone. Very shrewd. Some times less is more. Working smart beats Working Hard. Are you listening Hillary!

user-pic

Boy, that's about the most gentle 527 Ad I've seen in a long time.
No complaints about it. It certainly doesn't come close to the kind of dirty "swiftboating" the repugs will use......and hopefully Hilary's 527 supporters won't get there either.

Hillary - when you go negative, here's what people think: this is our future on Hillary Clinton. Going negative is exactly what Hillary should NOT be doing. It'll drive her already high negatives into the stratosphere. Voters already have a low enough opinion of the Clintons. How about surprising them with a turn toward the positive? She needs to speak directly to the voters with humility. Maybe this is impossible (if her stunning denial of her campaign pushing the plagiarism story is any indication. Liar, liar, pants on fire), but she needs to consider it. Think of the headlines, for crying out loud! Going negative just hands Obama two weeks more opportunity to stay positive. Talk about drawing sharp contrasts between the two campaigns.

Furthermore, keep Mark Penn and Howard Wolfson as far away from conference calls as possible. Have them put stamps on those negative mailers you've been sending out. Or have them research how many times Obama and Deval Patrick both used the words "and" and "the" in speeches. Anything that doesn't involve public speaking. You're the executive. Take charge.

This is nothing different from what Hillary has been saying since NH debate.

But this is my only concern- the ad seems as if it was from an "independent" group (being 527);

I think I like Hillary a little bit less than yesterday, but that's been true since about a month now.

To be fair to her- her candidacy is on the line. So, I actually expect her to go bonkers in the next two weeks- esp. in the debates. Clintons relish this kind of filth, it's their signature politics.

So far, Obama has played his cards well. Remember the LA debate? Every one wanted to go all out war on her- on hindsight a friendly debate paid off well for him.

He has to hit her on NAFTA- it appeals to the core of many blue collars workers.

I want to see him prepare well- and go wonky in one of debates; I have seen several speeches before where he is enormously policy detailed.

Actually, I remember an article in the New Yorker few months right before he anounced his candidacy-hey portrayed him a detailed, wonky policy guy with bad habit of describing every thing in detail.

It's kind of an Irony- but no compliants so far.
