Netroots Open Fire On Hillary For Agreeing To Debate On Fox

It's starting. Jane Hamsher of Firedoglake, Matt Stoller of OpenLeft, and Joe Sudbay of AmericaBlog all blast Hillary for accepting an invitation to debate on Fox. She'll be taking a lot of criticism over this.

Obama won't say whether he'll be accepting the invite. "We'll figure out our schedule, including any debates, soon," Obama spokesperson Bill Burton tells me. What will Obama do? Nixing the debate gives Obama a big opening to outflank Hillary with the netroots, but Obama has already appeared on Fox, and this doesn't seem like the type of battle Obama likes.

It's worth noting that here's an instance where John Edwards' absence from the race will be felt. You can bet he'd be raising his voice against participating. Without a major, top-tier Dem candidate giving voice to the case against Fox, it will be that much easier for Hillary and Obama to both accept the network's invitation.

Good, Hillary deserves to catch hell on this, she is showing once again that she doesn't give a damn about progressive values or integrity in the media. Obama should under no circumstances agree to this.

It would be nice if you allowed Senator Obama to actually decide if he is going to debate on Fox before you start writing about how he will. What part of having not decided do you not grasp?

Obama shows up on FoxNews after the state of the Union, and no one says anything.

Hillary accepts a debate on FoxNews, and the so-called progressive blogosphere goes crazy.

does anyone see a double-standard here?

user-pic

Could it be, rather than a double standard, but the fact that FoxNews was denied by the Democratic candidates before and now it seems one has changed her stance?

It could be a double-standard, if that's not the case. But it really wouldn't be a shock if they simply don't like her. That seems to be fairly common for a lot of people.

user-pic

When did he appear on Fox? What happened to that "freeze out" he had from earlier in the campaign?

I'm asking b/c I don't know...

user-pic

Two pro-Obama posts in a row. Geez.

p_lukasiak:

No double standard for true believers - especially when they're wearing their tres-hip, progressiver-than-thou blinders.

user-pic

She's going to be on there during the general election, both show up on their shows, so it's not really a big deal. While it is the Republican News Channel, it is still watched by a few folks around the country. As p_ukasiak writes, drop the double-standard BS. Besides, the so-called progressive blogosphere and netroots folks need to realize they are a very small, even if distinct minority more vocal than their numbers mean at the polls. Clinton and Obama are running to be president of the country, which includes viewers on the Republican News Channel.

What the hell is going on over at intrade? HRC is dropping like the stock market did today. What do they know that I don't?

Of course, I need only look at the market's reaction after Iowa... Right?

The constant, automatic, instamatic, systematic criticizing of Clinton is REALLY EXAGERATED and it is really getting old and I am beginning to think that it is going to BACKFIRE on the Obama camp (look at the very latest national polls).

I expect the slander from the cable news networks, but to see it come from other Democrats is really depressing. The ONLY thing more depressing would be to see McCain in the White House which is what the country is heading for if the nomination goes to Obama.

When you are out of money, debates are a great way to get free media exposure.

Obama isn't out of money. Quite the contrary.

"Considering Obama's been all over Fox News this past month and that he promised to go on O'Reilly after the primaries, and that Moveon screwed over Clinton after she voted against the censure when Obama did not, I am inclined to cut her some slack here. That would change of course were Obama to make a forceful denunciation of Fox News. I doubt he will do so."

From OpenLeft.com

Well, I want Obama to win, so if it scores him some points not to go on Fox, then I hope that he refuses. That said, I am not convinced that a debate on Fox is really so awful a prospect. Those of us who do not get cable miss the debates on CNN and MSNBC. Fox has announced that it wants to carry the debate on the local Fox affiliates, which means that it would be acessible to a broader audience. It is not obvious to me that this would be a bad thing.

user-pic

Maybe she can debate Mike Gravel if Obama doesn't show. I'm sure he would love the invite.

DFH,
Hillary is the one out of money!

She is the one asking for the debates

The original point, such as it is, was that debating on FOX would give the channel legitimacy as a news organisation which it is not. Whether interviews "violate" this principle is not in the least clear to me.

Before apoplexy strikes anyone, it is worthwhile to point out that, by my count, Clinton has appeared on FOX four times and Obama twice since the previous FOX debate-debate some 9 months ago, so neither candidate has fully shunned the channel.

user-pic

You all make me laugh - while Obama did get quite a financial bump this month remember Hillary had more money to start with and out earned him the last 3 months of 2007 -

She's not out of money.

Obama will be counting his pennies because of all the money he spent running adds in 20 states trying to catch up to Hillary - who only ran adds in a few states

hahahahahaha - he may have gotten close but she'll have more delegates by tomorrow morning AND she'll have money to burn!

hahahahahaha

Let her debate! Sheesh!

user-pic

Sheesh! Let her debate.

Hillary just pulled a smart political move. It's a catch-22. She may inflame the net-roots, but if Obama backs down, she'll be able to spin it that he's too weak to confront her in a debate, and too timid to challenge Faux News moderators. This is a really smart tactic.

It's dirty as hell, but smart. The problem is, the liberal bloggers can bitch all they want, in the end, the vast majority of the electorate who will vote in primary elections after Feb. 5th will not know or care what bloggers think. Also, I doubt any high ranking dems will speak out, and none of the other media outlets will touch the story.

F'ing brilliant political move. I'm so glad I didn't vote for her today.

Obama 08'.

Ann Coulter said she we would vote for Hillary and I guess she is going to show up on Faux to get that vote!

Hey look on the bright side, we can lampoon the lame assed questions asked, only debate worth a damn to date was CA on CNN.

Good for Hillary! Why wouldn’t she accept an invitation from Fox when they have been way fairer and balance in covering the democratic race between herself and Obama? The elite liberal media could not be more unfair to her so she certainly doesn’t owe then any loyalty and the same applies to the netroots. I think most centrist thinking democrats such as myself really like the fact that when Hillary is elected President she will not be beholden to the nutty far left that dominate the netroots. So, this is definitely a plus in Hillary’s cap for the general.

user-pic

I would just add that after the way other networks have slanted toward Obama and blasted Hillary at every turn, what is the difference of going on Fox? I never watch Fox, but in the present atmosphere of the reporting on stations such as MSNBC AND CNN, I see very little difference.

God Himself could not bestow legitimacy (SP) on Fox. Bill Clinton won points for Democrats by slapping down Chris Wallace at a time when Dems were being characterized as wimps. Democrats have nothing to lose and much to gain by debating on Fox.

user-pic

As I recall, Rupert Murdoch DID hold a big fund raiser for Hillary last year.

Perhaps she owes him one?

Man, it's gonna be hell on us if she has to pay back ALL those corporate supporters!

Where's Edwards when we need him?

You are obviously logging on from the far left fringes of the nutroots. Didn’t a Rupert Murdoch own newspaper just endorse Obama in NYC? So, what does that say about the debt he owes to Murdoch? Wake up and stop viewing the reality of politics through your nutty far left straightjacket perspective. Obama is just as beholden to all the old dinosaurs of the democratic party which lead us to political isolation before the Clinton remade the party into a real party of ideas and not the party of Regan which Obama seems so found of…..you wacky far left netrooters crack me up.

Let's be honest. Has anyone seen how HRC has been constantly trashed on the other cable channels. MSNBC, with ringmaster Chris Matthews, has been obsessed with her every move. The New York Times, with thier FEMBOTS, Maureen Dowd and Gail Collins are doing to her what they did to Al Gore in 2000. I look forward to HRC giving FOX a smackdown if they get out of line. Let the FOX audience see what real candidates look like.

I agree with dkorer and anonymous. The coverage that Hillary has gotten on the other news channels has been horrendous, specially on MSNBC with Tweety. Can't really say that Fox has been bad by comparison.
However, I think the original objective of avoiding giving legitimacy to Fox is still valid and worthy. Anybody doubt that when the general election campaign gets underway we will start hearing more on Fox about Travelgate, Vince Foster's assasination, and/or Obama's terrorist education in a madrassa?
And if when either one gets elected you can be guaranteed they will get plenty of the fair and balanced treatment.
They will be well-advised to steer clear from Fox and explain why, like Edwards did earlier.

Should she even care what the netroots think? All of them have given her the finger already, what does it matter anymore what their opinion is? Or would they support her if she turned away fox?

The netroots, I feel, has lost it's relevancy in this primary, it's just another Obama surrogate now.

user-pic

you see previous candidates (like Kerry) on Fox many times and other Democrats. Al Sharpton is a regular there as well. They hysteria over Fox is over-the-top and crosses the line into intolerance. A candidate should not be afraid to talk to any group of Americans with the exception of those who promote violence, bigotry, or intolerance of others. After all, they are vying to be the President for all Americans.

But isn't Clinton going to be embarrassed when the first question on the FAUXNews debate is "Why do you both hate America?"

I thoought Obama was reaching out to the Republicans, that he was a uniter, yada, yada, yada. I guess his reaching out is like W's- it's only on his terms.

user-pic

Too funny. Fox noise is fair to clinton and all of the other MSM has a Obama bias?

Doesn't anyone catch the irony here?

Um watch any of the Brave New Films Fox Attacks.

Hillary supporters are really screwed up when they think Fox is the fair one and every other news outlet is Biased against her.

Any Dem paying attention can't help but to look at this argument in astonishment. They were definitely persecuted in the 90's. That is not the case now. How can Hillary be "tough" when she and bill are crying "victim of the media" every 2 seconds. They screw up - the news is going to cover it. Period.

user-pic

Look as I said on another post, "do any dem's really believe that debates are the best framework for voter's in the upcoming primaries to understand what each candidate is about?"
Personally I think the best way is by the candidates going to each community and appealing to voters on his or her personal message and breadth of understanding of the issues facing us as Americans. Therefore I think it most important for both candidates to campaign directly in each of the states having primaries or caucuses until the national convention in Denver. Whether the debate on FOX, MSNBC, or any of the major media institutions the candidates must decide what is best for each campaign. I think most of these institutions do a poor job of allowing each candidate to talk about the issues in a more substantial manner because of the demands of sound-bite and gotcha moments. As far as the net roots go, Mrs Clinton has done very little to appeal directly to that community whereas Mr Obama has directly asked for their help. So her getting fire from this community is not surprising in and of itself.
