House Republicans Ask Shadegg To Stay
The influential conservative Rep. John Shadegg (R-AZ) now has some reason to reconsider his decision this week to retire from the House, Roll Call reports, and it's because of some very intense lobbying by his Republican colleagues. In an extraordinary move, the paper says, over 130 House Republicans signed a letter asking him to stay on.
The most interesting aspect of this is that Shadegg represents a relatively safe Republican district, which voted 58% for President Bush in 2004. So while there isn't too much risk of the GOP losing this seat, they're obviously very concerned about the appearance of so many members dashing to the lifeboats.

There were rumors that he announced his resignation to free himself up for McCain's Senate seat. Is this letter a subtle way ofhis colleagues to tell that a) they really don't want him in the Senate, or that b) they think Mccain will losethe GE and don't want McCain to give up his Senate seat?

Shadegg, the bad egg, should stay but change his party affiliation to something relevant like Federalist or Whig or Monarchist or . . .

Rats deserting a sinking ship. Why would you want to be in the minority anyway? You have no power to do squat. Just ask the dems who rode out the last 12 years in the minority.
I'm guessing that the repubs have major financial problems and they don't want to have to pay for another campaign in a shoe in district. Hope he stays retired.
