Hillary's Grievance With The Press Flares Up At Debate

The Hillary camp's grievance with the press, which has been mostly expressed by her aides with increasing intensity, suddenly comes out of the mouth of Hillary herself.

And it takes an odd form: A complaint that she's always the person who's asked questions first at the debate. As she put it...

Well could I just point out that in the last several debates, I seem to get the first question all the time. And I don’t mind, I’ll be happy to field them. But I do find it curious. And if anybody saw Saturday Night Live, maybe we should ask Barack if he’s comfortable and needs another pillow.

It's curious just how aggressively the Hillary camp has been working to draw attention to the SNL skit. Hillary spokesperson Phil Singer went out of his way to bring it up at a breakfast with reporters yesterday.

Now Hillary, in what is almost certainly a planned moment, brings it up herself, suggesting that the Hillary camp thinks they're hitting some kind of pop culture chord by pointing this out.

Does anyone even watch SNL anymore? Using that tactic is the equivalent of a journalist using a pop culture reference in a story -- it seldom works. And, judging from the scattered boos, it certainly didn't go over well tonight.

It actually was their highest rated episode in years. Still, I think the point made is grossly inaccurate. IMHO, HRC has dominated the media conversation, and every claim she's made about BHO, accurate or not, has been covered. On the other hand, I'm glad to list scandals that have gone uncovered in regards to HRC. I thought it was irresponsible of SNL to favor one candidate so heavily throughout the entire episode.

Tina Fey was the host. I wasn't surprised.

Eh. I may not like it, but they're under no obligation to present a fair or balanced view of any sort. If their cast or directors really do favor one candidate over the other, they're free to voice that.

That said, it does seem a little fair, because it's pretty much free advertising for one candidate. Maybe I'm being naive.

That was rather sad.

"Xerox" redux.

Was 10 times worse than the "xerox" moment. Just pathetic.

I agree that it was planned and she was just waiting for the right moment to say it - it didn't go over well at all and it was a real cringe-inducing moment and made her look really small and bitter.

This is a WTF moment if ever there was one. Her campaign is careening from ridiculous to downright bizarre.

it looked self-absorbed and petty. i can't see how they think that helps her. very confused by that one.

HRC is unhinged.

It's a train wreck for her to reference SNL.

Should Barack talk about South Park?

If only! "I have no quarrel with you!" Classic!

Even Rudy never got this humiliating opportunity, Hillary has damaged her political legacy with this debate, the rotor trackers went WAY DOWN real fast with her first 20 minutes.

I'm not laughing, it was uncomfortable to watch.

The post debate pundits will undoubtedly nail her for this one.

Tim Russert's questions are tough but fair. That's not going to stop her campaign tomorrow from whining about the unfair treatment she got tonight. They'll be out in full force tomorrow.

Wow, she looked PATHETIC there...that was stupid...she looked very whiny and petty.

I usually dislike Russert, but living in Buffalo, we've all wanted to see Clinton face her campaign lie about bringing us jobs.

user-pic

I'm not an HRC fan but her reply that she thought Gore would be president was a decent one. A senator cannot bring jobs to an area. i know it doesn't prevent them from promising it.

then why did she campaign on it? She didn't tell the Buffalo News that she was expecting President Gore to bring the jobs. She claimed SHE could.

user-pic

Why run on Pizza Rridays?

This isn't School Elections and I personally sick of being told that I will do X when it is clearly a pander or not as simple as they want you to believe.

I know all politicians pander, but I like it when we are all reminded that it takes all of us to help get it done.

It is important to push that whole empowerment thing on a regular basis. It is part of the reason a lot of (voting) people bought GWB's ownership society BS so thoroughly.

user-pic

Senators absolutely can bring jobs. It's called pork. And that's about 80% of what they do in office. Remember Joe Lieberman bragging about saving a sub base?

Even though I have been supporting Obama, I have always had a good opinion of her as a leader; but she looks pathetic when she lowers herself to the level of a cheap politician. Maybe that is what she is in the end, I didn't think so before but she seems to be doing her best to show us that she is.

BHO seems unflappable tonight. very presidential.

I may not be a Hillary fan, but after the Texas debate I actually felt sympathy for her and her predicament in this campaign. I felt like I finally saw that "warm person" that everyone claims to see in private, in direct challenge to the Penn strategy. I actually told people that she had grown on me. I (gulp) liked Hillary after TX.

That was then. This is now. I don't know who the real Hillary is, but if was the Texas Hillary, she needs to start listening to her "voice" and stop listening to Penn and Singer, etc. If the "I don't get that being angry and referencing late-night satire is a poor debate strategy" Hillary is it, well, je ne regrette rien.

Best debate out of the 20 so far for Obama IMO.

exactly. partly because he's being punched, parrying those punches, and giving it back in proper degree.

A short while ago Hillary had a little Gore facial expression - she shook her head and had a look of utter derision. Do you remember how Gore got blasted for rolling his eyes and making faces? She can't help herself - he's really getting to her.

Is it me, or does she sound more strident tonight, and almost on the threshold of shouting. Hillary comes across much better when she speaks in a softer tone. She is making Senator Obama look like the one who will keep his cool during a moment of crisis.

Fan or not, Obama is ON tonight.

Is it too late for Tina Faye for President?

Thank God that after tonight Tim Russert won't have Mrs. Clinton to kick around any more

As someone who has watched all the debates, BO has really gotten better...He is totally holding his own...he doesnt look nervous and the stammering is that bad as it use to be...But more importantly, he is totally countering HRC....

One more observation, HRC seems hell bent on having the last word on each and every question. and rebuttal BO gives...

Hillary looks and sounds just like one of those mean Nuns that Tina Fey said she would act like as President. Just what a huge Nation of adults needs. To be treated the way a mean Nun treats little kids.

Shudder shudder, I had a flashback to having been bullied in catholic school by several tyrannical child hating Nuns.

Makes me long for to go back to those traumatic times in my early childhood. Sure thing, Tina!

What was her point about getting the first question? Isn't it an advantage to get the question first, so you get to give the first response and also (if you're good) frame the question in a way that disadvantages the opponent? Plus you can almost always get at least a short rebuttal in after the opponent speaks. So WTF was her point supposed to be?

Is it too late for Tina Faye for President?

Yes, but maybe Obama could pick her for VP?

user-pic

This might be as simple as who do you want to listen to for the next four years.

Do you reject or denounce?

I think she made an excellent point, the media has chosen sides and this is bad for its viewers. Please put down the kool-aid if you think the media has been fair to the Clintons.

Hillary is not stupid but her cheap tricks are.

SNL? Really? How petty.

I would feel sorry for how low she has sunk, but her general nastiness in this campaign precludes that.

user-pic

For the first 15 minutes I kept thinking, "This is exactly like what it's like when my mother-in-law comes for dinner."

She soiled herself with that one... unfunny, mean spirited, non sequitor

"Is it me, or does she sound more strident tonight, and almost on the threshold of shouting. Hillary comes across much better when she speaks in a softer tone. She is making Senator Obama look like the one who will keep his cool during a moment of crisis."

It's not just you -- in the first ten minutes she had me cringing on the couch, fully expecting her to burst through the TV screen and grab/shake me by the collar. (And yes, I did cross my legs.)

Ugh, what a thunker. Clinton's reference to SNL was self-centered, myopic and tone deaf, as too often happens with her. Not good.

does anyone have a clip of the moment? i missed it :(

4 out 5 new topics were asked of hillary first. the russia question was a "jump ball" which hillary answered when obama didnt, but should have been asked of obama when he said he didnt have sub comittee hearings. ill bet he didnt answer it because he didnt know the name of the new president of russia i think it would have been another gw bush who is the president of pakistan moment.

Has anyone actually counted the number of questions Senator Clinton got first? Is there any truth to that statement?

Carol Soprano,

Thanks for making such a nice point. The audience thought Al Gore had won that debate (he did score all the points) until the press played over and over the rolling of the eyes and sighs and criticizing it for days on end.

Thank you for participating in our media-ocracy. Please continue to the end of the line and we will tell you who your candidate will be. Mr Edwards? Mr. Edwards? I'm sorry, no, you exit through this side door please, yes, the one that goes into the alley.

After this past weekend and last night's outburst/whining -- one must wonder how Hillary will cope with the stress of the Button/Key?

A note about Tina Fey, who cozied up to Hillary last Saturday. In a New Yorker profile last summer, she admitted to liking Rudy, even though she tried to conceal the fact from her friends.

She said of Rudy: "I like the idea that he will keep me safe."

Yuck.

Hillary has a good brand, and she just won't sell it. She needs to just sit there and impress everyone with her wonkiness, stay calm and measured, then let everyone draw their own conclusions. But she apparently can't do that, which makes me think she is a control freak. She won't let the chips fall where they may and have us make up our own minds. If she would do that, I think she would fare much better, because she is good enough, smart enough, and doggone it, people (would) like her.

But I don't think she can do that.. She insists on >>campaigning

But if you take that same whine, make it your own, elaborate on it, and offer the original third party as your corroboration, you just turned win-win into Lose-lose. You just brought attention to and discredited the third party by coopting them as an official party source, and you get tagged personally as a loser and whiner.

A control freak can't do that. A control freak has to make sure we know all about what that third party said and let us know how we should feel about it. A control freak has to push the buttons to make sure those golden eggs of unaffiliated grassroots meme-building keep coming. Of course, that goose dies the minute you lay your hands on it.
