Hillary Mocks Obama At Campaign Rally

At a rally today in Providence, Rhode Island, Hillary Clinton didn't withhold her contempt for Barack Obama's message, working the crowd into laughter through mockery of Obama as hopelessly naive: "Now, I could stand up here and say, let's just get everybody together, let's get unified — the sky will open the light will come down, Celestial choirs will be singing, and everyone will know we should do the right thing and the world will be perfect!"

"Maybe I’m just lived a little long but I have no illusions about how hard this is going to be," she said. "You are not going to wave a magic wand and have the special interests disappear!"

The Huffington Post has video here.

If you sort of cross your eyes and let the image on the screen get a little fuzzy, one could almost imagine that Hillary is pumping up the crowd at a WWE event, right before the big fight.

But then Obama comes out and the lights dim, a Public Enemy song blares from the speakers, and as he steps into the ring and removes his hood, he shouts:

CAN YOU SMELL WHAT BARACK IS COOKING!?

user-pic

LOL.

(mefite's represent!)

I find it extremely funny BillySumday. After my writing a post on my blog about how I though the Hillary mocking Obama was reminiscent of wrestling (to be fair - my whole blog is on how politics is reminiscent of wrestling) i see your posting.
I thought it was so eerie i even included it in my post.

The jury is out on whether Hillary's ploy is going to work. But she's obviously made a major play to cast herself as being the sober realist. Obama is doing the hope thing, but he is also being frank i.e telling Wall Street they are greedy to there face. Should be interesting to see how the masses read them.

How does she know a magic wand won't work? Has she tried it? Sheesh, have a little hope Hillary!

Shame on whom? Clinton gets angry the second she feels Obama has misrepresented her position, but misrepresenting Obama has pretty much been the basis of her campaign since he started surging in the polls.

If this is what she really thinks Obama is all about -- and she must not have paid much attention in the Senate if that's the case -- then it's going to hurt that much more when he wins the primary.

"You are not going to wave a magic wand and have the special interests disappear!"

Especially when you keep feeding the dogs from the table, Hill!

A very presidential performance. You know, if you think Sybil Fawlty is presidential.

It's SYBILLARY!

user-pic

ok- yesterday someone suggested she seemed unhinged at the event with Strickland. I didn't buy it. Today-- man- she has lost it. Does she really think that mocking him will go over well with anyone except those who already support her (and maybe not all of them either) It is so juvenile...

Gee whiz.

Create a new phrase:

Eyesore delicious.

And she makes it so in less than 20 minutes.

This was perhaps the most pathetic, childish display I've ever seen from a politician, even including Bush. I couldn't believe what I was watching when I saw that video for the first time. If this is how she acts when the chips are down I DON'T want to see what she would be like in the White House.

Oh, and keep in mind this is the same Hillary who just two days ago smiled and shook Obama’s hand at the debate and said she was honored to stand next to him. Do we need any more proof that her “special moment” at the end of that debate was nothing but scripted bullshit?

I should also again point out that the entire premise of her “talk” vs “action” attack (which she graciously borrowed from Deval Patrick’s Republican attacker) is false, because Obama has both detailed goals and plans about what he wants to accomplish, as well as an impressive history of legislative achievements, meaning all of these attacks are meant to deceive Democratic voters, and nothing more.

I think this was her "Dean scream" moment. I agree with TheGolux, yesterday was close, but today was it, she has lost her goddamn mind.

http://thepersonalispolitical.tumblr.com/post/27123632

I wonder if the Obama campaign (or, for that matter, the Democratic Party) might be justified in calling off Tuesday's debate. Her unpredictable, unbalanced behavior (starting with her warm speech at the end of the Austin debate and veering wildly ever since) is legitimate cause for concern.

New Intrade Market.
What will HRC have at the end of her failed campaign ?
1) Dignity
2) Sanity
3) Mark Penn
4) Respect of Democratic Party

So this is what going down in defeat looks like. Can someone please give this woman a hug?

LOL!

Anger. Sarcasm. What's coming tomorrow? Damnation?

Folks, this is our future on Hillary Clinton. Just say no.

kash79 brought this up on another thread:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMQytRKk4Ig

I think HRC has now been trying so many tacts to garner votes, she can credibly mock *herself*!

I hope Josh puts both videos side-by-side on the mainpage. No commentary would be needed for TPM readers.

user-pic

"Working the crowd into laughter", huh?

Watch the video a couple of times and focus on some faces behind Hillary. I would say that quite of few in that crowd were 'worked into a nervous/confusion sort of laughter', quite different that the usual supporter cheers of Hillary's rising inflection points. Even the raising of signs must have been a relief to some there, in order to hide their embarrassment. That was painful to watch.

Ouch! LOL!!!

She didn't mock Obama. She mocked the many states and millions of voters that have voted for him.

Mock me in February and expect me to vote for you in November? Go to Hell, HRC.

Hillary looked like an angry bumble bee dressed in yellow, an observation made while watching the Oscars.

Uh...yeah...give her a hug- but keep the good china out of her reach.

She wants us to review her record against his. It's easy. She was secretive, slow, defensive, and arrogant about health care reform in '93 and it set the issue back by 15 years and contributed to Republican takeover of the Congress. I've yet to see any of the Clinton defenders address this issue (Kensdad, where are you?)

She voted in favor of the Iraq War - I can only guess because she thought she needed to look tough - just what we need: a candidate more concerned with how she looks than her core values (if there are any). Reminds me of her husband.

And then she isn't even ready to manage her campaign on day one or day 365 - and pays $10m to Mark Penn's company for consulting.

Okay, there's the record. What is supposed to give me confidence? Even her Cuba comments the other night - the same old, same old that has resulted in zero progress in our relations with and influence over Cuba for 50 years - I am thinking because she is afraid to look "weak".

Enough already.

As Obama put it, we're getting into the silly season.

The knives are out amongst her campaign staff, many of whom are reportedly out looking for work, and she and her husband are embarrassing themselves.

Meanwhile Obama is catching in his teeth every bullet she and McCain are shotting at him.

It is amazing.

And starting today, Obama took on another front in what is now a three front war by coming right back at Nader.

They all have their sites set on Obama because everybody knows he;s the one to beat.

I don't get it. Is she calling Barack a fairy?

she's making it really hard to imagine pulling the lever for her if she's the nominee. I can imagine what four years of this would do to the party and we may be better off focusing on strengthening the congress.

fortunately, that's looking less like a concern I'll have to have.

user-pic

I was thinking the same thing recently. The more she does this stuff, the less likely I am to vote for her if she's the nominee. Of course, she is doing this stuff because she is less likely to be the nominee. Desperation.

So it's a relief that it's not a decision I'll have to make.

Pathetic.

Yes, Hillary, we know the magic wand doesn't make evil go away... You are still here. But, we are wondering about your campaign based on despair.

Yes, it's pathetic, but it's also a pretty easy argument to rebut, even without addressing the way she embarrassed herself with "the skies opening and the Celestial Choir singing" comment. It doesn't take a Magic Wand to chip away at the special interests. We can start by refusing to accept lobbyist money into a presidential campaign and by not allowing anyone working for a presidential campaign (or a President) to be an active lobbyist.

See? No magic wand. No fairy dust. Just a vision for the way you want your campaign -- and the country -- to be run, and the will to make it happen.

This was her Dean scream moment. She is now officially off the deep end.

So, let me get this straight. I should vote for the cynical, shrill angry candidate over the positive, upbeat, inspiring one.

Yeah, okay. Whatever...

Yeah, I was going to save the call for after TX / OH, but she's pretty much done.

Condescension is only going to hurt her... It's what people like least about her...

She's done. It's over.

Wake me when the general starts...

*Cough*

S.C.:

It's a status quo that extends beyond any particular party and right now that status quo is fighting back with everything it's got, with the same old tactics that divide and distract us from solving the problems people face, whether those problems are health care that folks can't afford or a mortgage they cannot pay. So this will not be easy. Make no mistake about what we're up against. We're up against the belief that it's all right for lobbyists to dominate our government, that they are just part of the system in Washington. But we know that the undue influence of lobbyists is part of the problem and this election is our chance to say that we are not going to let them stand in our way anymore. ... Because in the end, we're not just against the ingrained and destructive habits of Washington, we're also struggling with our own doubts, our own fears, our own cynicism. The change we seek has always required great struggle and great sacrifice. And so this is a battle in our own hearts and minds about what kind of country we want and how hard we're willing to work for it. So let me remind you tonight that change will not be easy. Change will take time. There will be setbacks and false starts and sometimes we'll make mistakes.

TX:

Because understand this, Houston: As wonderful as this gathering is, as exciting as these enormous crowds and this enormous energy may be, what we're trying to do here is not easy, and it will not happen overnight. ... We know how difficult it will be, but I also know why we're here tonight. We're here because we still believe that change is possible.

VA:

But we know how much farther we have to go. We know it takes more than one night – or even one election – to overcome decades of money and the influence; bitter partisanship and petty bickering that's shut you out, let you down and told you to settle. We know our road will not be easy.

Maybe Clinton thought change would come easy. Or maybe she is discounting those speeches (and about 25 others I chose not to quote here) because, apparently, there have been no elections in the last couple weeks. Or it could be she is just knocking down strawmen.

Also, while I normally do not place too much importance on "looking presidential," Clinton better hope today's clips do not get a lot of play on cable and network news.

Great post. Thank you for reminding us of what Obama actually says. It's a bracing antidote to Hillary's pathetic and insipid attacks.

user-pic

She's toast! Barack's the nominee. Her stock in the party is going down the toilet with this kind of garbage act.

I bet you there a are a lot of super delegates that wish they waited before endorsing her.

Ready to Take Her Meds On Day One.

Stay classy, Hillary.

I'm a little scared what Hillary is going to show up at the next debate....

She will find out who her real friends are, those who live vicariously upon her, or those who are genuine friends.

Her behaviour like Dean the last "loser" will be remembered.

I look back on this all and see the BET moment when Robert L. Johnson attacked Obama as the tipping point. Hillary can take permanent damage to her image if she doesn't get her head screwed on.

The demand to fire somebody for the PIMP remark was also over the top, it might have been better to have been above it then respond and focus upon it.

Both issues were reminders of the Clinton divisiveness.

But her looming defeat will be chronicled for history by the internet, she needs to get her head straight as to what that legacy will be and how it will play into the next senate race?

Her xerox moment was noticed.

In all seriousness, how does she think her tirades the past 2 days are a way to find new voters in Ohio & Texas? People will see this behavior for what it is: inconsistent. She has shown us three very different faces over the last 4 days and only one of them was remotely flattering.

Just when I thought it couldn't get any weirder, it does.

She doesn't need to find new voters, per se, but just stop the bleeding...I'm beginning to think Hillary Clinton is not the brilliant strategist we all thought she was.

The HP has an attack going on using Digg and looping names with lots of comments.

I think she is piling on with the corporate media and RW to vet him to see if he will fight back or they will run over him. It is a good test to see if he will crack under pressure.

Clinton faced the same thing as a front runner and lost a big lead.

"Clinton faced the same thing as a front runner and lost a big lead."

can you provide reference with video, please?

No, that would kill his argument :P

Hillary has gone negative, but maybe we'd all be better off if we toned down the rhetoric. This divisiveness only helps McCain. Hillary will sooner or later drop out.

I say we really need a definite loss in Texas and Ohio to end this and leave no ambiguity. Otherwise it will drag on and on, and get more and more negative.

Work the phone banks, call Ohio and Texas, donate... Keep up the momentum this next week.

Hillary's latest freak show also here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBuuR62hVAs

Here are the facts, ear;y voting results in TX. the point is this, that the rumors of money troubles is real, vendors are getting stuck and the campaign seeks smaller vendors as they are less likely to seek court as a remedy.

This is going to be interesting, but one of the candidates had to lose, let me say that again, one of the candidates had to lose.

Hillary needs to ask herself how she wants to be remembered as a consequence of this endeavour? Clean departures were Joe Biden, where no permanent damage was made to their image, and then the ludicrous, Rudy Giuliani.

I imagine that many donors and people whom put their names and dollars on her, and who now have a credibility and image issue to deal with are disapointed, I mean arm twisting campaigning where large donors are left alienated and angry, and soon, a list of accounts overdue, while the spin doctors who wrote themselves 12th hour paychecks bail.

But here is the empirical evidence, early results:

HRC is done and her behavior will be fascinating.

Election call: It is Obama

By RICK CASEY

The same factors that carried the last 10 states for Obama will carry Texas.

Yeah, let's just tone down the rhetoric. It makes it easier to slink off stage when McCain and $250-million-man Ari Fleischer bitch-slap us off our feet.

Eric, I am pretty sure this was meant to whip Hillary's supporters into a frenzy, in addition to making them laugh. Any objective observer would see she failed miserably at both. No matter what you say about her, at least she is consistently bad. Just awful.

HRC now channelling GWB. Video confirmation attached:

http://www.simsadler.name/movmedia/HWG707rev.mov

I think Hillary thinks the voters are really damn stupid. She is going to help us out now. Pay attention class:

"We are a nation at war. That seems to be forgotten."

http://www.cbn.com/CBNnews/327583.aspx

Curious
"Hillary Clinton on the War on Terror

This is not just a phrase for me. This is very real. This kind of goes to the core of what I think the next President has to do, which is to protect and defend our country in a smart way. I do not doubt President Bush’s devotion to protecting and defending America, but I have grave doubts about the strategies he has deployed."

She is still triangulating. SAY IT LOUD, BUSH IS WRONG.

Here's a possible reason for Hillary's bizarre behavior...John Edwards. I've read that he can't decide who to endorse. He likes Obama but he's afraid he isn't tough enough, not enough of a fighter.

Hillary's campaign may be thinking that an Edwards endorsement could save her. Hence, she's try to be tough enough, a fighter.

Maybe not, but somebody had to have some kind of a reason to tell her to behave this way.

She did say something about Edwards in yesterday's tirade. But...

Will somebody please explain to me what in the sam hill is going on over there? How is this a good idea? How?

"Will somebody please explain to me what in the sam hill is going on over there? How is this a good idea? How?"
It's a good idea because if they do nothing, they're going to lose, and they have no idea what else to do.

Hillary's sporatic behavior over the past few days is not indicitive of a fighter.

It is what someone does when they are getting and taking advice from many different people.

She won't take a stance on what direction her campaign will go.

Positive?

Negative?

The choices don't get any easier than that.

What kind of games do you think she will play when she gets to the White House?

Who's in charge Hillary?

I resent feeling sorry for you at the end of the Texas debate now.

I'm sure Barack's head is spinning.

Honored indeed.

Apparently McCain's lobbyist buddy works for Mark Penn. Interesting reading over at the dailykos:

http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/2/24/14518/2213/544/463202

Gosh, call me crazy, but I thought that this looked like a very effective approach for her. I dare say that if she had been more like this all along, the race might be going differently right now. I do think that Obama is going to win in the end, but I do not think that speeches like the one which is the focus of this thread are marks against her.

I think it's the combination of her delivery and the not-so-implicit suggestion that any demonstration of idealism on the part of voters represents a wholesale rejection of the real world. I daresay no one likes to be told they've become separated from their rightful mind just because they're supporting a particular candidate.

That said, I won't call you crazy.

user-pic

As Mira Sorvino said in My Cousin Vinny, "Oh my Gawd, what a f*cking nightmare!" :)

Hillary, sarcasm and condescension really do not become you - neither does the schoolmarm scolding you engaged in yesterday. Didn't you learn anything from "the tears"? People respond to you when you are human and authentic - this is really, really beneath you and I expected better.

The line was Marisa Tomei's....but I agree with the sentiment.

user-pic

God, you're right - I just watched that movie the other nite - duh!!!

Thanks for the correction! :)

Wow, Greg D, you surprised me with that one.
Pleasantly.

For Kristi, yes, the voters can be let's say "intellectually challenged", as from the 2000 & 2004 elections, and even the slim change in 2006.

That doesn't mean to dismiss them or insult them, but work with them, desires and good qualities and flaws and all.

Yeah this is kind of sad. Its like Jordan playing too much. Its like any great player who stays in the game too long - they may have nights of brilliance, but most of the time they strike out or seem a shell of their former self.

I'm just surprised the leadership of the DNC hasn't done something to make this end quickly. They should rapidly get behind Obama and really stack the deck against her.

But Jordan won 6 titles first.

If she's like this now, can you imagine what she'll be like if she loses everything on March 4?

Ten bucks says if the networks call the whole shot for Sen. Obama she'll be in Philadelphia, screaming at a gymnasium full of high school kids, pretending it's not happening.

user-pic

I can finally write it, wholeheartedly and without any caveats:

Greg DeLassus, you are wrong.

Wow, that felt good.

Her speech looked like bad comedy, the kind of speech that would not make anyone laugh who wasn't politically incentivized to do so. Not presidential, not classy, not funny, not motivating, not effective.

Greg, just taking a head count from this thread it doesn't seem like it's having a good effect.

I think Greg's a closet Hillary supporter. I've yet to see her say anything that he finds objectionable in substance or tone.

Greg, do you really think that her bellowing in that harsh, grating voice, her eyes bugging out and her voice dripping with disdain for a guy who has won 24 states to her 11, is a "very effective approach?"

With advice like that, you should be advising her campaign, because this seems of a piece with the advice she's been getting up to now.

Clinton08: "We're in the 21st Century Sarcasm Business"

The worst thing about her attacks on him at this point is that they aren't going to help her get the nomination at all, but some of the soundbytes will surely be picked up by McCain come the general election. Her actions are hurting the entire party

Hillary, Hillary. You're blowing it Hillary. Know when to say "Uncle". Que sera, sera.

Can i buy the 3rd and sell the rest?

Obama/Edwards 2008

You can't run for VP again unless you won last time.

jgringer wrote: "I'm a little scared what Hillary is going to show up at the next debate...."

This is a fascinating thing. I can't remember a time in national politics when one of the candidates became so ... choose your adjective ... unpredictable, erratic, changeable, unhinged.

It adds a while new dimension to the contest. Who is Hillary today? I can't help thinking that Barack, by simply being steady and consistent, is looking more presidential all the time.

It's hard to resist getting all psychobabbly about this.

Eesh. Ugly. ...And, yes, so presidential.

Seeing things like this truly does make me think she knows she's going to lose and she's just trying to whip up some donations to pay down her debts before she quits after March 4.

user-pic

This is great:

http://www.obamaiswinning.com/2008/02/a-story-of-hope.html

Quite a juxtaposition, isn't it? The years certainly haven't been kind to Hillary, have they? They've turned her into a bitter, nasty, small person. She will not come out of this campaign unscathed unless she can concede gracefully after March 4 and work her a$$ off making sure he gets into the White House. Then, I think, all will be forgiven.

I'm a strong Obama supporter, and a strong democrat. If by some chance Hillary wins the nomination, this moment may me from voting for her this fall. Totally shameless to mock your own side like that. Obama has said time and time again that change will not be easy....come on...

I agree with Greg DeLassus to the extent that IF she had had this tone from the beginning, steadily, alternating with her wonkish policy person, folks would know WHO she was and some would like them, like the toughness. But by this point, she has shown so very many personas and some so directly contradictory.... the initial questions about her authenticity have been answered in most people's minds: she isn't.

(The one of her personas that made me wince the most, for some reason, was when she played stewardess for the press, serving cobbler up and down the aisle.)

BI-POLAR, is it how to spell it? this morning the newsweek's john alter published why hillary should quit now. any thoughts?

interesting how many clinton supporters have chimed in on this thread with what a proud direction HRC charting.

This is the real Hillary and just one attack method she is testing. All of her biographers say she has a sarcastic and biting wit--and here it is for all of us to enjoy. Or not.

I found it authentic and a refreshing change from what I always viewed as fakeness. I agree with Greg D., BTW, that this authenticity would have served her well if she had started with it last year--along with her real reasons for voting in 2002 for the Iraq War (and I suspect she really approved of aggressive military policing which certainly was evident in Bill's two terms).

BTW, Greg D. is an authentic Obama supporter and I know this...well, because I actually have seen Greg at Obama events here in St. Louis.

I won't be on line for a while so enjoy the conversation and don't be too brutal....well, knock the Hillary supporters on their collective backs. :)

hello, I'm in St Louis trying to contact Obama campaign locally... does TPM allow any sort of email between registrants?

My appa-logies for misuse of the system, Josh.....

Desperation is a stinky perfume...

to this observer, her behavior seems indicative of someone losing control and giving in to personal pettiness; I suspect that she immediately regrets these statements after making them but fed by the crowd, she has absolutely no self-control.

It seems all she can do is complain about Obama rather than say anything positive about herself. I suspect that her innermost un-voiced feeling is that this is all so unfair -out of some misconception that she has 'earned it' by now...

Hillery is turning into a cartoon character. She is now coming across like a childish taunter similar to Nelson Muntz on The Simpsons. Hah Hah, Smell you later Hillery!

user-pic

For those who wonder where all the Hillary supporters are, if they're like me, they've just gotten a little tired of the hate here. Now apparently saying something negative about your opponent is the same as calling the people who voted for him fools. I guess the only thing that would make most of you people happy is if she spent all of her time talking about what a great President Obama would be.

Hillary has little choice but to run a somewhat negative campaign. Gnerally, a candidate can count on the press to keep something of a critical eye on her opponent. But the endless press lovefest for Obama is more than a little frustrating. If the Clinton campaign doesn't point out Obama's shortcomings, it's clear no one else will.

I wish some of you would go to sites like Ace of Spades and Little Green Footballs, and see the tone of the comments. Apart from the subject matter, the hate and negativity are identical. You guys are great ones to call someone out for mocking.

And spend a little time reading Michelle Malkin. All of the "unhinged, deranged" talk should seem very familiar and comforting. Hillary was gracious to Obama during the debate. I'm sure many of you got a little wet thinking she was conceding, so to you the fact that she resumed tough campaigning is "wildly inconsistent," as if being gracious during the debate somehow disqualified her from ever criticizing Obama again. And I notice that her graciousness didn't deter the Obama campaign from sending out their vile Harry and Louis mailer.

Face it, every time the Clinton campaign does anything that smacks of, you know, campaigning, Obama's supporters get the vapors, and everything's "slimy" and "Rovian." The other day Obama's campaign manager suggested that people donating to the Clinton-supporting 527 in Ohio could be liable to be criminally prosecuted. How much hysteria would we have seen on this site if it was Howard Wolfson making scare mongering remarks like that? What a bunch of hypocrites.

Face it, every time the Clinton campaign does anything that smacks of, you know, campaigning, Obama's supporters get the vapors, and everything's "slimy" and "Rovian."

It seems to me that Hillary's "Shame on you, Barack Obama" smacked of something a bit more egregious than "campaigning".

And it was Hillary who accused Obama of Rovian tactics, not the other way around.

However thinks that's effective- I hope are not allowed to run a million dollar Business.

Who wants that freak show to be the NEXT PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES

user-pic

Hillary has lost it. She is out of control. Unhinged. Ugly. Undignified. Embarrassing. She seems to be suffering from a multiple personality disorder. How do her outbursts over the weekend compute with her conciliatory tone at the end of the last debate? What can we expect tomorrow night?
In my view, these tasteless theatrics, this condescending over the top mocking of Senator Barack Obama, who after all is also her Democratic Senate colleague, outright disqualifies her for the nomination and the presidency.
She is the type of personality who if she has to go down, she would gladly drags us all down with her. Scary stuff.

Thank you for validating my post.

And Avo, if you haven't seen how many times Obama supporters have accused Hillary of being Rovian, you haven't been paying attention.

This is so amusing and revealing. So many here are willing to use a republican contrived MSM delivered false story called the "Dean Scream" which was the result of manipulation of the audio part of the video and used to tear down the first netroots candidate. You accept that fake republican meme thereby nailing it to Dean so you can use it on Clinton. And then you accuse her of Rovian tactics. Hilarious. Far to many of the Obama supporters seem to think this is the spin room and your purpose here is to shill for your candidate.

Huh?? Two, maybe three people here mentioned it. Not sure that qualifies as "so many".

I certainly don't support that analogy. Watching this video of Hillary it's clear she's on a totally different level. I almost expected her to start speaking in tongues.
