Hillary Ad In Texas: Vote Early For "Our Friend"

Hillary Clinton has this new ad running in Texas, aimed at the Latino community and asking people to vote early for "our friend." The ad is running in both English and Spanish. Here's the English version:

Interestingly, the ad doesn't talk about issues or tell the viewers anything compelling about Hillary — it's entirely about the logistical process of how to go vote for her. And on top of that it stars Henry Cisneros, who in 1999 pled guilty to a charge of lying to the FBI, and was then pardoned by Bill Clinton in January 2001.

Really? That afraid that Latinos aren't going to be so keen on her a couple of weeks down the road that she has to resort to this condescending... weirdness. Huh. Um... Okay.

Call me crazy, but I do not think that explaining early voting is all that condescending. Voting before election day is not all that intuitive, so you are hardly implying that your audience is a bunch of idiots if you try to convey to them that they are allowed to vote starting today and give them information to find out where and how to do so.

That's not the condescending part. The music and simplistic tone are, however. Also, the "our friend" bit sticks out like a sore thumb.

Imagine if a Black surrogate of Obama's did the same for African-Americans - but did it in inner-city Houston in front of a bunch of Black folks with hip-hop music playing in the background. Now, as a Black person, I'd probably get a chuckle out of it for it being so ridiculous. Good informational ad, though.

They do it all the time. Just different words and music. Maybe you need a translator.

Well can you blame her??

I mean, as soon as Obama makes the rounds down there in Texas and the people start to hear him, he'll cast that Obama mania oil all over them and they'll be gone to Hillary forever. They'll be helpless to overcome all that magik. That Obama-mania stuff. They'll go along like all the other sheep.

She should have started telling peole in Wisc. that a month ago!

Bahhh!

Grow up, Rae. If your candidate was stronger and showed better character in this race, perhaps I'd consider supporting her.

user-pic

Nice little black sheep illustration. That's a twofer, you get the "if you support Obama" you are a sheep, and the "cute little darky" routine as well.

What next, some retor 'little black Sambo' illustrations to accompany your posts about how the majority of Democratic voters are herd animals because they vote for a candidate you are not supporting?

user-pic

Ugh.

What next, some retor...

Should read:

What next, some retro...

Well obviously Latinos don't care or know about issues, they just want to know people are their amigos, everything else is for whites, right?

hehe.

I know, Rae, it's so funny. When Obama begins to campaign in a state, he makes people want to vote for him. That evil bastard!

That sure explains why HRC won Florida. She would have won the whole country if no one had to meet her.

user-pic

It's the campaign making the opposite mistake of before. They are overcompensating for not handling the nuts and bolts well. Before they didn't get people to caucuses and didn't explain the process, so now they have a hotline and insist on early voting, "Today."

Eric, are you suggesting that convicted felons aren't good judges of character?

user-pic

" it stars Henry Cisneros, who in 1999 pled guilty to a charge of lying to the FBI, and was then pardoned by Bill Clinton in January 2001."

Wow, Henry got off easy. Denise Rich had to shell out hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Clintons to get Bill to pardon Marc Rich.

Bill probably felt empathy for Cisneros since his crime involved paying the mistress that was blackmailing him tens of thousands of dollars...and then lying to the FBI about it.

Obama also appealed to Texans to vote "today" or "tomorrow" or "early" at the beginning of his Houston rally yesterday as part of his victory speech. He evenhanded out pamphlets to everyone in the audience that explained how to do so.

I thought it was brilliant on his part, and it's brilliant on hers. They both know what early voting achieved for Clinton in California. This also ensures that people have many opportunities to vote as opposed to a window of opportunity on March 4th, and it benefits Obama to get votes before debates, since people tend to think Clinton performs better at debates.

Interesting that you should mention the debates, because I was trying to think today what sort of game-changing events that Clinton might yet have in store to help restore her fortunes in TX and OH. I think that the debates are really her last, best chance. If she can really wow folks (in a way that has not happened yet) in these fora, maybe she can yet achieve the margins of victory she needs. She will be sailing against the wind, however, and Obama is not just going to be sitting on his hands in the meantime.

Production quality looks like an ad for a local used-car lot running on a UFH channel. Are they that short of cash?

"What would it take to get you to vote for this candidate TODAY!"

*golfclap*

Nicely done.

So when is the ad featuring Marc Rich coming out?

Maybe the same time when Rich's lawyer Scooter Libby comes out with his for the republican.

OK, I have to admit that while the "vote erly" part is fair enough, the music is kinda funny, almost in a parody sort of way. I expect somebody to walk by with a steaming tray saying "hot plate! hot plate!" It does strike me as condescending*. And the "our friend" bit, twice, that's kind of beating people over the head.

* But then, no soy Latino.

This whole race will be over really soon if people just keep on repeating these simple words...

Shame on you, Hillary!

What Hillery must do, during tomorrow night's debate, is to object every time Senator Obama starts to speak. Hillery must complain to the moderator that Senator Obama should not be allowed to use words, because that gives him an unfair advantage.

"...Senator Obama should not be allowed to use words, because that gives him an unfair advantage."

hehe.

If I call that number, do I get a Salad Shooter?

I can't imagine the debates are going to overturn this race at this point. Are Ohio and Texas going to be the first two states to respond to her campaign presence with steadily growing support? The Omentum's already started in both of these states.
I half expect an Oprah-urged Dr. Phil endorsement soon.

At this point I just want to Hillary to save face. She can make a strong case for experience, expertise, and health care, and do it honorably to the end.

The ad's kinda cheesy, but what I'm surprised at is that the ad doesn't mention the parallel caucus process which will select about 1/3 of the delegates in Texas. Obama took pains to emphasize that at the very beginning of his speech last night, perhaps at the risk of driving away national TV viewers.

Maybe Clinton assumes that Latino precinct caucuses will be hers anyway?

Or maybe they still don't have their ground-game plan together?

user-pic

Or they still don't fully understand the Texas system, which is what news reports as of today are still quoting their campaign on (i.e. "we are still trying to figure it all out").

It's probably more like they recognize that at this point they can't be even remotely competitive in a caucus format, and they're ignoring it hoping to bolster their presumptive convention argument that caucuses disenfranchise their voters and therefore all Obama's caucus wins shouldn't factor into the superdelegate decision.

Right now, she's attacking the very structure of the Party's nomination process. Call it the Audacity of Cynicism.

Obama is also encouraging people to vote early. Somehow I doubt he is desperate, or doesn't have his ground game together.

The point isn't about encouraging early voting. The point is, this Clinton ad either forgets to mention or deliberately ignores the Texas caucus afterward, which awards a healthy percentage of delegates. Obama is not leaving delegates on the table, so you have to wonder why Clinton seems to not be focused on doing the same.

Wow, Hillary complaint about Obama's words are a trip indeed. Rather than sticking with the issues that are affecting people lives. This is the best she can come up with.

I was struck mostly by the really bad audio of Hillary's "...I approve this message." Like some kid recorded it on an old cassette recorded in a gym bathroom.

I can't believe you would go with the Cisneros conviction crap. That was one of the lowest of the republican smears from the 90's, and now you are adopting it. You really are reminding me why I don't want to support Obama.

Cisneros is exactly the kind of person we should be begging for in public service. He is smart, inspiring, and was extremely effective in every position he held. That he was drummed out of Washington is one of the great travesties of the whole pathetic, scorched earth republican tactic of the 1990's and you should be ashamed of yourself for bringing it up.

I am sickened by how much the Obamatrons sign on to the republican smears of the 90's. Are you too young to remember how awful they were, or is this just a preview of the kinds of things that will be acceptable to a guy who wants to bring more republicans into his "movement."

I can't tell...are you serious? Or is this snark?

Did you just prove rico's point?

No. Did you?

That's because only 23% of them can locate Iraq and Iran on a map, even if the map is labeled.

As an Anglo (i.e., member of the elite dominant culture in America), I'm not the best person to evaluate this ad.

My guess is that Henry Cisneros is still influential to Mexican-Americans in Texas, and that the ad itself is perfectly fine and will effectively get out the vote, as it is supposed to. It seems to be adhering to the KISS* principle, so that might be why it doesn't mention the caucus as well. Meaning, the first goal is to get people to vote in the primary.

*Keep It Simple, Stupid

Hillary is fighting against the clock

How many felons are running the Clinton campaign?

First point: plenty of folks here are still chaffing at the way Cisneros was smeared. He's not seen as inherently corrupt, more as someone who made personal mistakes and then was martyred for them, and I don't think it made a dent in his popularity here in Texas to the degree some of those commenting on this thread assume. I'd say his endorsement carries a lot of weight.

Second: The music may seem like cheesy "theme" music to you New Yorkers but, ya know what, lots of people listen to it here in Texas. By choice. Everyday. On the radio. We also have breakfast tacos, which serve the same cultural niche that bagels do in New York. :-)

Third: 85% of the delgates are chosen by the primary - not to mention the popular vote, even if largely symbolic, is at stake. Talking about caucuses in the ad would be a waste of air time at this point. For one thing, you have to have voted to participate in the caucus. (Maybe closer to March 4 an ad mentioning the caucuses would make sense.)

Fourth: The whole point of this ad is - it's simple, just call this number and we'll help you with the specific info you need to vote. If someone calls who is undecided I'm sure the campaign will fill them in regarding issues. I assume that once they have contact with a potential voter they will not only help them find early voting locations, but also recruit folks to go to the precinct caucuses, and maybe do other organizing for her campaign.

Fifth: Production values. I think the homemade flavor of this ad works - slick, professional ads can be distancing. This really does have a grass-roots, this is coming from the community, not from slick Washington political strategists feel to it.

All in all, I think this ad is exactly what Hillary needs to do in Texas - get out the vote.

Obama hit the ground running by tapping into a growing grass-roots infrastructure that has been building over the last few years, in part due to DFA efforts. He is riding the wave of discontent with the Texas Democratic party insiders - the party has been in apathetic, ineffectual shambles for years.

Attention All Texas Republicans and Independents!!

On March 4th, Texas Republicans and Independents will have an opportunity to end Hillary Clinton’s (and Bill’s) presidential ambitions once and for all!

Since Texas has on open primary, Republicans and Independents should sign in at their polling place and request a Democratic ballot. They should then vote for Barack Obama. Even James Carville admits that if Hillary loses Texas, “she’s done!” Republicans can help make this a reality!!! Just think, no more Clintons in the White House!

Voting Democratic this one time will have NO effect on your ability to vote in the next Republican primary or obviously on your vote in November. Since John McCain has the Republican nomination locked up, voting for McCain or Huckabee at this point will have no effect on the outcome on the Republican side.

After you vote during early voting or on March 4th, you ARE NOT done! Report back to your regular polling place at 7PM on March 4th to sign the Barack Obama list for caucus delegates. In a little known Texas voting quirk, 67 delegates to the Democratic convention will be seated because of these caucuses. This is a full one-third of the total number of Texas delegates. For Hillary to lose, she has to lose the primary votes AND the caucus votes. I urge you to vote against Hillary Clinton by voting for Barack Obama.

Please forward this e-mail to all your Republican and Independent friends so that we can help ensure the Clinton’s defeat on March 4th!!!

You reap what you sow.
