Connecticut NOW Hits Obama On "Present" Votes

The National Organization for Women chapter in Connecticut is joining the Hillary campaign's condemnation of Barack Obama's "present" votes on some abortion bills back in Illinois, sending out an e-mail to its members that quotes the head of Illinois NOW: "We made it clear at the time that we disagreed with the strategy ... Voting present doesn't provide a platform from which to show leadership and say with conviction that we support a woman's right to choose and these bills are unacceptable."

Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), an Obama supporter, sent out an e-mail rebutting the charge, noting that none other than Illinois Planned Parenthood lobbied for a "present" vote, even if NOW disagreed. "The facts are clear — in the Illinois state senate, choice advocates asked strong pro-choice legislators like Senator Obama to vote 'present' on Republican-designed bills like a ban on partial birth abortion to protect a woman's right to choose."

Shameless. I have lost all respect for NOW, especially after their vicious attacks against Ted Kennedy after he endorsed Obama. Support is one thing, by attacking other supporters and spreading lies (notice, always at the 11th hour when there isn't time to set the record straight) is inexcusable. I'm a feminist, but these people only care about political connections, they don't give a shit about fairness or who is really strong on these issues, or what their actions reflect about themselves, or what having a coattail rider as the first female president will do to feminism. I'm beyond disgusted with NOW, and Hillary Clinton.

NOW has really wedged itself out of relevance. Taking a discredited story and trying to manipulate it on behalf of Clinton...it loses credibility.

Then again, this was their NY NOW response to Kennedy's endorsement:

Women have just experienced the ultimate betrayal. Senator Kennedy’s endorsement of Hillary Clinton’s opponent in the Democratic presidential primary campaign has really hit women hard. Women have forgiven Kennedy, stuck up for him, stood by him, hushed the fact that he was late in his support of Title IX, the ERA, and the Family and Medical Leave Act to name a few. Women have buried their anger that his support for the compromises in No Child Left Behind and the Medicare bogus drug benefit brought us the passage of these flawed bills. We have thanked him for his ardent support of many civil rights bills, BUT women are always waiting in the wings.

And now the greatest betrayal! We are repaid with his abandonment! He’s picked the new guy over us. He’s joined the list of progressive white men who can’t or won’t handle the prospect of a woman president who is Hillary Clinton (they will of course say they support a woman president, just not “this” one). “They” are Howard Dean and Jim Dean (Yup! That’s Howard’s brother) who run DFA (that’s the group and list from the Dean campaign that we women helped start and grow). "They" are Alternet, Progressive Democrats of America, democrats.com, Kucinich lovers and all the other groups that take women's money, say they’ll do feminist and women’s rights issues one of these days, and conveniently forget to mention women and children when they talk about poverty or human needs or America’s future.

This latest move by Kennedy, is so telling about the status of and respect for women’s rights, women’s voices, women’s equality, women’s authority and our ability – indeed, our obligation- to promote and earn and deserve and elect, unabashedly, a President that is the first woman after centuries of men who “know what’s best for us.

It seems that women can do Rovian distortion politics as well as anyone. I guess that's progress.

Three rules to live by that, alas, far too many people in this country simply cannot get through their heads.

1. Everything in any email that includes the words "forward this to everybody you know," or any variation thereof, is complete bullshit.

2. The closer the mail drop to election day, the more Hillary does not want you to check out what she says in the mailer.

3. Any inflammatory statement in a robocall from an "independent" group made within 24 hours of an election is a lie.

I am so sick of this distortion of his voting record. You want to talk about voting record, this is one reason, among many, that people should not vote for the clintons. You have the iraq war vote, the iran war vote and this:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/david-rees/clinton-obama-and-clust_b_84811.html

I really want to know why in the h*ll we don't have any information on her voting record?????? They keep distorting these present votes. WTF is her gd record in the senate????????

Btw, folks, I may have cracked the code on at least one problem with the commenting system.

Even if TPMEC says it knows who you are, your comments will go to the comment roach motel unless you have first logged in at TPM.

Or, on the other hand, I may just be confusing a coincidence with causation because I think I've seen it happen more than once.

All they are doing is trying to keep themselves from disappearing into total oblivion.

LOOK! WE STILL MATTER!! LOOK HERE!!!

The only thing more pathetic about CT NOW's shilling for Clinton in pushing this fraudulent smear against Obama, is the timing, in that they waited until the day of the election when it will have next to zero impact on the voting in their state.

Which begs the question does CT NOW's incompetency negate their mendacity?

user-pic

Wow. NOW is really going to diss Illinois Planned Parenthood like that huh? You know, the group that wanted Obama to vote present. The group that actually has to deal with the abortion issue on the ground in Illinois.

user-pic

Man what's with all the NOW hater-aid?

Seems to me like TPM voices are out of touch with real world people.

If anything Obama has been trying to bogart away some of the NOW vote, effectively undermining the organization- That's evil.

When you don't get the endorsement you should respect the organization.

what on earth are you talking about? you think that press release from NOW NY represents "real world people"? yikes! Obama, luckilly, doesn't have to resort to lying about Clinton to take her on on this issue. many major feminists are supporting Obama. he is a feminist himself! this "evil" hyperbole is ridiculous, but typical.

"If anything Obama has been trying to bogart away some of the NOW vote, effectively undermining the organization- That's evil."-smacfarl

wtf does that even mean? that obama's trying to get pro choice women to vote for him? that's "evil"? explain please.

So the defense here is that he just did what the lobbyists asked of him, err I mean choice advocates.

It seems women do Rovian distortion politics as well as anyone. I guess that's progress.

why should anyone be surprised? this is what the Clintons do..

Hillary senses doom.

She "cried" yesterday like she did in NH, but people aint buying it this time. Seeing that even the media isnt giving it much play, they now turn to what they know and do best, SMEAR...

The only way HRC comes out tomorrow looking like the front runner is if she smashes BO in Cal, NJ, and CT, but the polls, for what they are worth, are showing this race to be close...If its close, its a still a loss for her...

I dont think i have ever seen a 20 point lead evaporate so quickly...

NOW is will on its way to irrelevance. Argue that a woman president is better womens' issues. Argue that a woman president raises the profile of womens' issues. But stop with the nonsense distortions that punish a candidate for the way a PRO-CHOICE ORGANIZATION ASKED HIM TO!

p.s: I'm generally not in favor of victors freezing out their rivals' backers, but if Obama wins, I hope New York and Connecticut NOW representatives never set foot in the White House.

Their goal coming out of this is to win as many states as possible, and spin that as momentum going forward, with a call to unit behind a single candidate against McCain. Which is why losing California would be disastrous for Clinton.

Basically, their argument becomes, how can we nominate someone who can't actually win states, while conveniently ignoring the fact that Clinton lost build in leads of 15 to 25 points all across the board. It'll be a tough argument for them to make successfully, especially since the rest of the month seems to be friendly to Obama, while he's clearly in a better position than Clinton fundraising wise to survive the long haul.

If Obama can win 7 or 8 states today, expect that argument to go absolutely nowhere.

New Hampshire Pro-Choice women are still lrecovering from the fracturing this stuff caused.

It was great to vote for Obama an hour ago!

user-pic

The Concord Monitor reported yesterday about the enduring bitterness in the New Hampshire pro-choice community over this eleventh hour bullshit on the eve of the New Hampshire primary.

Note the same cowardly pattern of sending these easily rebutted charges out at the last moment, so that the Obama campaign has no chance to refute them.

what a bunch of shameless liars. between that frothing, rabid attack on Ted Kennedy, based on the most childish, specious arguments I've heard in a long time, and this repeated now, false, lying attack on Obama, I have lost all respect for NOW as an organization. what a shame, this group has done great work for years and years, and they're willing to throw that credibility away for this particular candidate just because she's a woman. it's their right, I guess, but it's pathetic to watch. and the saddest thing is that attacks like this will frighten low-info female voters especially into voting for Clitnon on false grounds. and we inch closer and closer to President John McCain. how does Hillary expect to win people like me back after her lying, race-baiting, and just generally running a terrible campaign? it's quite clear she doesn't care. me me me, now now now, that's her campaign slogan.

How confusing. Watch this video of the IL NOW director from when Obama was in office, saying she's switched from supporting Clinton, to supporting Obama, because the Clinton camp keeps distorting Obama's reproductive rights record. Seems like she's in disagreement with this article, quite a bit.:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVuMYKs8iJs

thanks for bringing that to this thread, I saw it a few days ago, but people should watch it. Hillary Clinton is a straight up liar.

user-pic

Thanks for this, but just FYI she was President of Chicago NOW, not IL NOW.

"The above video comes from Barack Obama's official presidential website. It's meant as proof that his "present" votes on choice were the right thing to do and supported by Illinois NOW. However, the truth is quite different from what Lorna Brett is saying in the video. How do I know? Just recently I've traded emails with Bonnie Grabenhofer, IL NOW State President. She's pushing back hard on the outright misinformation in Obama's YouTube video, because what Brett is saying is evidently pure fabrication.

Below is part of the email Grabenhofer sent out, which I received via email from readers. I have confirmed with Bonnie she sent it. She's also very adamant about getting the truth out about Obama's "present" votes, which don't pass the smell test any more than Lorna Brett's video that was made on Obama's behalf.

I thought I'd take a moment to try to add some clarity to the anti-choice Present votes in IL.

Lorna Brett was president of CNOW from 1996-1998. She was not president at the time we were lobbying on these bills. Five of those votes occurred in the 92nd General Assembly session in 2001. NOW records indicate that she hasn't been a member since 1999. She was not there when we were lobbying against these bills. She is using her very old affiliation with NOW to try to validate her criticism of Hillary Clinton.

Here is Brett's response to Bonnie:
A response to Bonnie Grabenhofer, Illinois NOW President, from Lorna Brett Howard:

Bonnie is correct. I was not the president of Chicago NOW when Senator Obama made the "present" votes. I never said I was. Somehow it was reported that way, but you can review the video blog for yourself at www.youtube.com., type in Lorna Brett Howard. Here are the facts: I was president from 1995 - 1999. Barack Obama was elected to the state senate in 1996. He had a 100 percent voting record on choice all the time he was in office and Chicago Now and Illinois NOW endorsed Barack in all his state senate races, as did Planned Parenthood and NARAL. NOW relied on Pam Sutherland, Illinois Planned Parenthood's lobbyist, to do all our work in the state legislature. She did a great job and it was because of her strategy we defeated many measure designed to restrict a woman's right to choose. It was with heavy heart that I first went on the record to defend Obama's record on choice, being a firm Hillary supporter. When the line of attack did not stop but was escalated in a direct mailer in New Hampshire to pro-choice voters from Hillary's campaign I stopped being sad and got mad. This is bad for the pro-choice movement. It hurts our reputation and credibility. I stand for choice and truth.

In addition, does it not mean something that National NARAL president Nancy Keenan released a statement saying both Hillary and Barack are both 100 percent pro-choice?

Illinois and New York NOW have done serious damage to their organization's reputation among serious pro-choice men and women. It is really distressing as a feminist to watch.

Glad to set the record straight.

One noticeable quality of Obama-bots ... they are never talking about what their candidate actually stands for, they're always frothing about Hillary Clinton -- if half the claims are true, she is even more horrible of a person than, well, who? George Bush. John McCain. Mitt Romney. Fred Thompson?

I guess that is why so many Obamites have sworn to try to swing the election to the Republicans by refusing to vote unless Obama-san is the candidate. Mrs. Obama has led the way, taking the high ground on that issue. Heh.

We -- progressive Democrats -- could be in the driver's seat, with an embarrassment of riches. The opportunity exists to elect either the first woman or the first black man as President of the United States. Unfortunately, that prospect has no appeal to the Obama-bots who are dominating the discussion of the candidates. All they want to do is keep that woman out of the Oval Office, even if it means putting in John McCain or Orville Reddenbacher.

For Shame.

Well Michael, one thing Barack Obama is for is protecting a woman's right to choice and privacy. CT NOW is lying about that, and I'm sure it's a huge coincidence that they are doing it on the same day the Clinton campaign sends out a mailing telling the same lie. That is the subject of the post. Nothing about keeping "that woman" out of the Oval Office.

Not all of us can be as positive, substantive and reasonable as you are in your post, which is totally without distortions or histrionics.

user-pic

Half as bad as the claims?
Well this pretty much did it for me. When Hillary used FEAR!!!!! TO SCARE UP VOTES in NH. I will not support someone who tells me that it was no coincidence that Al Qaeda choose to threaten the British PM on his first day. When she says the terrorists watch our elections closer than we do. That we need a president that is ready from day one.
FEAR FEAR FEAR - ELECT ME! IF WE GET HIT ON THE FIRST DAY, WHO DO YOU WANT?
Don't believe me? Hear it for yourself from her own mouth.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BB4Vvgn_4k
Haven't we given up enough of our civil liberties for the politics of fear?

I don't think you can call yourself a progressive Democrat and be in the Hillary camp, but that's an entirely different debate. You bring up two points, one --that we'd rather McCain if we support Obama. Look at the polls. If Democrats want to beat McCain, we MUST elect Obama. He trumps Hillary in the polls, but Obama beats McCain. She's too divisive. You bring up that we're not addressing the candidate's record, by showing the Chicago NOW director supports Obama. In the video she switches from Clinton to Obama, because Clinton distorted Obama's record. So while, yes--she slams Clinton, she is using Obama's record to do so.

CT NOW.... didn't they endorse Lieberman over Obama?

If NOW was serious about making a difference for women, they would hit their beloved Hillary Clinton with taking support from disgusting misogynists like Henry Cisneros and Antonio Villaraigosa who hurt the Democratic Party in California and Texas the same way Bill Clinton did with his womanizing before and during his time in the White House. If you know the history, Cisneros's philandering ways probably had a big part in getting George W. Bush into the governor's mansion in Texas. A dirt cloud still floats around him like Charlie Brown's pal Pig Pen as it does for Villaraigosa whose scandal is very much alive and still somewhat fresh in L.A. Is Hillary psychologically drawn to this type of man, or is she willing do anything and give up any principal in order to win?
