Video: Teddy Kennedy's Speech Endorsing Obama

As promised, here are the highlights of the speeches from Teddy Kennedy and Barack Obama today...

I'd missed this the first time, but note Obama's claim that the "torch" JFK referred to was passed to his "youngest brother." Which in turn makes Teddy's endorsement of Obama that much more pregnant with symbolism...

Late Update: One other thing about the video: You can see that Kennedy's shots at the Clintons -- his insistence that "no one" should distort Obama's record of opposition to the war, and his claim that Obama will be ready on "day one" -- are very pronounced, and clearly intended.

Bill Clinton is a racist

and his wife was complicit in his racist maneuvers.

I do not understand some peoples justification by saying,

"At worst, the Clintons are race baiting, but that is distinct from being racist"

By what possible logical argument can you find a distinction.

I do not want anyone I support to win at the expense of my conscience in this matter,
this is not about politics on the backside of Bill Clintons tactics,
it's about morals and what is right - regardless of any presidential election.

What if one wanted to get elected in Germany in the 1930's they could and did play the anti Semitic card without
actually saying "anti Semitic".
Do you really believe their is a distinction.
Do you really think Bill Clinton can camouflage his intent here,
which is to divide us based on color.
You can not sugar coat crap like this.

Their will be deep seated consequences for what the Clintons have done -
not least of which may be getting a Republican elected because of their actions.

I know many, many people, black, white and brown,
who are deeply offended by the Clintons race baiting.
They are switching their vote from Hillary and Bill -
or staying home for the general.

He’s joined the list of progressive white men who can’t or won’t handle the prospect of a woman president who is Hillary Clinton (they will of course say they support a woman president, just not "this" one). ‘They’ are Howard Dean and Jim Dean (Yup! That’s Howard’s brother) who run DFA (that’s the group and list from the Dean campaign that we women helped start and grow). Ted Kennedy is a terrific speaker - really knows how to fire up a crowd.

Normally I'd say "that's a hard act to follow", but Barack didn't have any problem.

I read the NOW piece of Kennedy's endorsement. I also note the NOW-NYS does not have it on their website, but no matter.

Of course, according to their logic, since I have a penis, I have no right to discuss HRC at all, since I'm just another white liberal male who fears a woman president.

Disgusting story, and currently being lambasted by dKos. The guys and gals over there are working themselves into a lather over this one (when not extolling their hate on various Senators over FISA).

To the ward heelers and Rezko, since I have done some research on this, I'm interested to find out from y'all what it is EXACTLY that Obama did wrong.

Did he not properly vet a campaign donor?

Did he trade favors for campaign contributions?

Did he buy a property from Rezko at lower than FMV (fair market value)? By the way, this is completely false on its face. Go do a search of the Chicago Tribune (and the Sun-Times).

What is it that Obama did wrong? Or is it simply that because a campaign donor turned out to be dirty is the problem?

If that's the case, shall I re-direct you to the Clintons' collective histories?

Oh wait, that's right. The Rezko robo-posters won't answer my questions.. Besides, I have an eye on Taylor Marsh's blog too, and I also note that she doesn't even reach the "probable cause" requirement for a warrant or a grand jury indictment in her case against Obama.

Just a smear reasonably related to one or two small tidbits of fact. The same kind of tactic taken by Rush Limbaugh on a regular basis. As a liberal, I am unimpressed.

Sure, that is fine. There is nothing wrong with KS. That said, it is best to space out these endorsements so that he can get two day's worth of good, above-the-fold ink instead of one above the fold and another on page A3 of the same edition.

I disagree, except, maybe, to the timing of the Kennedy endorsement.

Here are the problems BO has, and events he cannot control:

1. FISA vote today
2. SOTU tonight
3. FL Primary
4. Sibelius Democratic Response

Now, everyone knows HRC will get at least a little press with her "victory" in Florida tomorrow, though, of course, the news cycle will be primarily concerned with the Republican, contested primary.

Plus, he needs Teddy to get on his horse out west as soon as possible.

I think in that regard, considering the restraints posed on the above events, the endorsement strategy is like this:
1. Obama gets to campaign in DC while also waiting for the SOTU and FISA votes. Kennedy speaks and dominates the news cycle until the SOTU.
2. Sibelius gives the Response tonight.
3. Hillary, and some Republican to be named later, wins Florida tomorrow night.
4. Sibelius endorses Obama tomorrow, thus taking some time away from Hillary.

I think it is critical for Obama to get Teddy's endorsement out there now, so then he can turn around and have a huge megaphone on his side after Tuesday (in Teddy), and the effect of the endorsement now mobilizes others to come out for Obama (Big Al, for example? anyone?).

Now, the Response is tonight. Since Sibelius will be on every major network giving, her high profile in the following day endorsing Obama will assist him in a huge way, on a day that should be an negative press day for BO.

Of course, this strategy looks really good if there is another big endorsement on the other side of Florida. There is only one of those left, that I am aware of...

The question is, then, who are the biggest names left to endorse?
Al Gore?
Jimmy?
Howard Dean?

I was there too today and it was amazing. More almost because of the line to get in which stretched for blocks and blocks. And many of those who were waiting were happy and enthusiastic and hopeful. As for the speech itself, it really did feel like a torch passing ceremony--not in a cheap way--but you got a sense that Ted really believes in this guy. Sure you could say that the Kennedy's are split, etc. but it kind of misses the point which is that Obama does seem to inspire in this generation what JFK inspired in our parents. Endorsements matter, but this one is particularly important for what it represents--a president who gets people excited about politics again.

Speaking of old news, there's Obama's initial opposition to invading Iraq - then there's today's Obama showing his support for the war today.

It's a good thing that Ready-To-Run-From-Day-One wasn't present in the US Senate at the time of the Iraq War Authorization Vote while at the same time considering his planned 2008 run like Clinton was (and did) back then, eh?

Is the Massachusetts Sr. Senate seat secure enough for Teddy to accept the cabinet position he's jockeying for? After all, if Hillary gets elected, she's aready got a team of advisors. But if Barack gets elected, his cabinet's going to be thrown together at that moment, and teddy'll have a good chance of seeing the White House once before he retires.

So many variables here, it's mind-blowing. Bill was correct about the So.Carolina primary, 1988 to 2008. S.C. has the largest % of black voters of any state in the Confederacy. And no Democrat has won it in years.
If the youth comes out and votes for Obama, and he's elected, the Dems will have solid voters for 20 years. If either Obama or Clinton is the nominee and we lose, the Democratic party may self-destruct. No poller can get a handle on the 'I'm telling you what you want to hear' voter, who swears he/she'll vote for a woman or a black, because to say otherwise makes the voter a racist/sexist (read Republican) voter. I'm betting it's over 15% that lie due to this.
I hate to say it, but Edwards has the best chance of beating the Republicans in the General, just because I have less faith in a significant percentage of Southern Democrats voing for a woman or a black than did for a Yankee with a snooty accent in 2004.
maybe that's why the press gives Edwards no coverage, which feeds a cycle where he looks unelectable, which reduces his coverage. Because GE and Viacom would hate to have the left-est of the Democrats, and the one most likely to poll reliably (cause 'white male' eleiminates the variables that are playing hob with the pollsters right now,) end up being the Democratic nominee.

I'm not sure if you're still on here, but to answer your question I would say that he is a little farther to the left than most other dems, but not much. More to the point, I think he and Hillary are at about the same point on the ideological spectrum. He's a little to right of her on health care, and a little to the left on some other things, but they're very close.

The difference is in style, where Obama is certainly much less aggressive and more incremental than Hillary.

I was there and it was awesome. My favorite part of Ted's speech was the "ready from Day One", it was awesome.

I'm tired of someone with LESS experience as an elected official than Obama, and nothing else in her experience that makes her especially suitable for the presidency, making the claim that she doesn't think he has enough experience. Seriously, why do I care what someone with crap experience says about her candidate's experience? Here you have someone with more experience than all of the frontrunners COMBINED putting that experience bullshit to rest. It was awesome. Oh, not to mention Bill had even less experience (and he was younger) when he ran in '92.

For those of us who were inspired by John and Robert Kennedy would say this is quite an endorsement.

Remember the Clinton's are the reason the Democrats hit the skids. There was no reason for Bill to lie, especially since no one but really crazy people cared about his affair.

The younger Kennedy, a Rhode Island Democrat, crashed his Mustang convertible into a Capitol Police barrier in the wee hours one spring day in 2006. Perspiration built on his upper lip. "I need to seek expert help," he continued. "This afternoon, I'm traveling to Minnesota to seek treatment at the Mayo Clinic." On the decorative bookshelf behind the lectern where he spoke, there was a copy of the Warren Commission's report on his uncle's assassination.

The I-have-an-addiction speech! It was, as one of the reporters there put it, a "get-out-of-jail-free card." Another Kennedy would survive yet another scandal.

Kennedy was not new to the role. He admitted past treatment for cocaine addiction. In 2000, he was caught on film shoving an airport security guard in Los Angeles when she told him his bag was too big for the X-ray machine. That same year, his insurance company settled a claim from a charter boat company that said he did $28,000 of damage to one of their yachts and abandoned it off Martha's Vineyard. The Coast Guard rescued a woman who had been Kennedy's date from the boat after she had an argument with Kennedy and called for help.

Kennedy was not harmed politically, and he was not cowed. In 2004, Democrats called off a Grateful Dead fund-raiser he planned for the national convention. On the campaign trail, he collapsed during a health-care event at a hospital—and was caught by an emergency room doctor. At another event, Kennedy told young Democrats at a nightclub: "I don't need Bush's tax cut. I have never worked a fucking day in my life."

Here's a thought. Bill Clinton knew exactly what he was doing when he compared Obama to Jesse Jackson: he painted Obama not just as the "black" candidate, but as the candidate of the left wing. Then the Kennedys jump in, and Obama is now officially the "far left" candidate, which leaves Hillary as the "centrist" candidate, just in time for Super Tuesday.

As someone who at the age of 20 worked very hard for Robert Kennedy and was only 5 feet from him when he was shot and sat on the grassy knoll in front of Good Samaritan Hospital until he died and the hearst carried him out, I feel that he would have been very disappointed in Teddy. The current campaign reminds me of Obama being on his Ivory Tower with his limousine liberals like Eugene McCarthy and the hard working blue collar workers and red, brown and black people and all who needed someone to champion them like RFK is embodied in Hillary Clinton. One thing that I learned during that campaign was that by their enemies shall ye know them and I feel very comfortable with Clinton.

Ladies and Gentlemen - I'm only going to talk to you just for a minute or so this evening. Because...

I have some very sad news for all of you, and I think sad news for all of our fellow citizens, and people who love peace all over the world, and that is that Martin Luther King was shot and was killed tonight in Memphis, Tennessee.

Martin Luther King dedicated his life to love and to justice between fellow human beings. He died in the cause of that effort. In this difficult day, in this difficult time for the United States, it's perhaps well to ask what kind of a nation we are and what direction we want to move in.

For those of you who are black - considering the evidence evidently is that there were white people who were responsible - you can be filled with bitterness, and with hatred, and a desire for revenge.

We can move in that direction as a country, in greater polarization - black people amongst blacks, and white amongst whites, filled with hatred toward one another. Or we can make an effort, as Martin Luther King did, to understand and to comprehend, and replace that violence, that stain of bloodshed that has spread across our land, with an effort to understand, compassion and love.

For those of you who are black and are tempted to be filled with hatred and mistrust of the injustice of such an act, against all white people, I would only say that I can also feel in my own heart the same kind of feeling. I had a member of my family killed, but he was killed by a white man.

But we have to make an effort in the United States, we have to make an effort to understand, to get beyond these rather difficult times.

My favorite poet was Aeschylus. He once wrote: "Even in our sleep, pain which cannot forget falls drop by drop upon the heart, until, in our own despair, against our will, comes wisdom through the awful grace of God."

What we need in the United States is not division; what we need in the United States is not hatred; what we need in the United States is not violence and lawlessness, but is love and wisdom, and compassion toward one another, and a feeling of justice toward those who still suffer within our country, whether they be white or whether they be black.

So I ask you tonight to return home, to say a prayer for the family of Martin Luther King, yeah that's true, but more importantly to say a prayer for our own country, which all of us love - a prayer for understanding and that compassion of which I spoke. We can do well in this country. We will have difficult times. We've had difficult times in the past. And we will have difficult times in the future. It is not the end of violence; it is not the end of lawlessness; and it's not the end of disorder.

But the vast majority of white people and the vast majority of black people in this country want to live together, want to improve the quality of our life, and want justice for all human beings that abide in our land.

Let us dedicate ourselves to what the Greeks wrote so many years ago: to tame the savageness of man and make gentle the life of this world.

It is interesting and discouraging to see how Hillary's attack dogs always cast any development in the most negative terms possible.

Kennedy is making very positive, constructive statements about Obama and his qualifications. Obviously, they are framed to counter many of the misleading, distorted, dishonest Clinton statements about Obama. Most Democrats with any integrity agree, the Clinton attacks had to be countered. Kennedy however, did not attack the Clintons. He could have, essily. He chose instead to be positiive.

Whne Sargent characterizes Kennedy's praise of Obama as "shots" at the Clintons, however, he is attempting to minimize the significance of this historic, ringing endorsement.

Kennedy is talking about Obama, about the Kennedy legacy of aspiration, vision and service, about the nation, about the future.

Shame on Greg Sargent for his cynicism in trying to caste this uplifiting, galvanizing momment as one more round in the same, destructive Clinton-style poliical warfare. SHAME! The nation is sick of the Bush-Clinton politics as warfare and rejecting it. The war correspondents at TPM/EC are slow to get the message.

Drill down into the data in the Survey USA poll in CA and you find out some disturbing things about Obama supporters:

A plurality voted for Bush in 2004 (and about 20% appear to have voted third party or not at all), and more are against abortion, believe global warming is made up, are against stem cell research, and are against labor unions.

On all these positions, a majority (or near-majority of at least 49%) of Hillary supporters are on the actual liberal side of these issues. You may think the guy is a progressive, but clearly his bipartisan rhetoric has convinced a lot of folks that he will be catering to the caveman crowd. And this is CA; one can only imagine how repressive his supporters are in purple states. Now, the question is how does he stay in power for eight years without giving the whackjobs some payback? Obama is a dangerous choice for president. Yeah, he will be a different kind of Democrat. I think its called a republican.

No wonder Obama wants to shore up his liberal cred. But not sure a Kennedy endorsement is going to play well with a large number of his current supporters. And no self-respecting liberal is going to drink this kool-aid once they have the facts.

The other interesting thing is that on most issues polled, Clinton's numbers add up to close to 100%, while Obama's are not even close. That means 20-25% of his supporters were undecided on key issues of the day. It is either another indicator of the compromising (read:sellout) spirit of the man that neither he nor his supporters can actually take a stand or perhaps they are just too ignorant to decide. These are key issues to me, and I absolutely do not want a president who is beholden to people who are swooning for him, yet clearly know nothing about these important matters. That's we had for the past eight years—a cult of personality. It also may mean that there are a large number of his supporters who actually know little or nothing about his politics. Once he is vetted by the repug smear machine, a lot of folks are going to either flip or sit on the sidelines once again. Hillary is the true blue progressive and her supporters clearly know that. Its kind of ironic, since its Obama's supporters who are supposed to be the educated ones. But after reading the semi-literate, misinformed comments of his supporters here for months, I guess I am really not that surprised at all. You folks might have went to college, but you probably studied sociology or some other worthless crap.

The Clintons are trying to return to White House. Senator Kennedy is not running for president. Try and grasp the difference. Senator Obama is the new, change agent, and Senator Kennedy endorsed that, and did not claim that Senator Obama was going to restore Camelot. Obama is campaigning to be a change agent, and Hillary is campaigning to live up close and personal, every day, for eight years in Monica and Bill's romper room. Now that would be truly living in the past. Think about that.

My favorite part of the speech was when Sen. Kennedy told the story of Harry Truman -- who had been out of office for seven years, same as Bill Clinton -- telling John Kennedy it wasn't his turn in 1960, that we needed someone more experienced to be president. I'd never heard that before, but it was perfect.

I also thought it was interesting that here was Ted Kennedy -- someone who earlier in life had been subject to some of the same kind of self-destructive behavior that still afflicts Bill Clinton -- being the grown-up, the mature statesman, giving the still-immature ex-president the rhetorical spanking he deserved.

The beautiful irony is that the Old Guard Kennedys (Teddy, Caroline) endorsed Obama, while the New Guard Kennedys (Robert Jr., Kerry) endorsed Clinton in an editorial to the LA Times yesterday. So who's in fact looking back to the past and who's looking forward to the future? Of course this delightful distinction is lost on the single-minded East Coast media (including TPM), which haven't even mentioned Clinton's Kennedy family endorsements.

Can we please stop this crap? No one is especially excited about the potential return of the circus aspects of that administration, but get off it. We don't need to be reminded every 15 minutes. I'm a lot more concerned about the divided executive with Bill is in there, and the hawkish bent of that administration, than some stupid personal foibles. The incessant carping on the sex stuff I think diverts us from real questions and almost delegitimizes them in a lot of people's minds.

Heretic - I think you're missing the point.

A majority of Reagan supporters disagreed with him on many issues - abortion included - they voted for him anyway, as did conservatives. If Obama can get liberals, moderates and a few conservatives - even those who disagree with him on many issues - he stands a far better chance of being elected than Hillary, who can't entice many voters who aren't already for her.

We spend way too much time arguing over ideology - most Americans aren't ideologues. Like it or not most people vote for a candidate based on whether they like him/her, whether they trust him/her and whether they think he/she can do some good (whatever that means to each individual).

Face it - Bill Clinton got elected presenting himself as a moderate Democrat. That (plus Ross Perot) got him elected, not being a "pot-smoking draft-dodger." It's also why Hillary voted for the Iraq War (don't look like a weak peacenik). The notion that being leftwing is viewed as a positive in this country is absurd.

And tell me, honestly, wouldn't you like to hear that Americans of all sides, left-right-center, want to vote for Hillary? To anyone who says "no" I'd say this is the reason the Dems have been in a shables for the last 3 decades. Let's move forward.

Liam, yes, Ted Kennedy (literally) dwarfs Kathleen Townsend, but for some astute (read: hip) audiences, Ted's endorsement pales in comparison to Robert Kennedy Jr's.

But in any case, my real points are (once again):

1) TPM does not keep us updated in a fair and balanced fashion. Thanks, TPM, for showing the same bias we can find on CNN.

2) There's a flagrant contradiction in Obama's message of "change" when he wheels out the Big Dinosaurs to evangelize about a long-gone era. I love Ted Kennedy, but that doesn't mean the contradiction in Obama's message doesn't exist.

Additional point, since you overstate Caroline's gravitas: What has Caroline Kennedy done lately? Attended Gerald Ford's funeral? Hello??? She is no lion. She's a regressive (and privileged) role model for women.
