South Carolina's The State Endorses McCain
John McCain has picked up the endorsement of The State, the largest newspaper in South Carolina, which published an editorial today citing McCain's experience, war record, and steadfastness on the Iraq War.
"John McCain has shown more clearly than anyone on the American political scene today that he loves his country, and would never mislead or dishonor it," the editors say. "He is almost unique in his determination to do what is right, whatever the cost. And he usually has a clear vision of what’s right."
As for Mike Huckabee, whom many evangelicals are considering: "Gov. Huckabee is an exciting newcomer who shows a wonderful ability to connect with voters’ concerns, and Republicans could do far worse than to choose him. But his utter lack of knowledge of foreign affairs is unsettling."

And, we all know who's side The State was on at the time, and how that all turned out. Editors, or idiots?
I'll go with idiots…

McCain's been palling around with Lindsey Graham for too long to not get an endorsement like this. I'm not sure how much it'll truly help him win their primary in the end, but it'll be sure to keep him ahead of the chaff and shield him from some of the nastier push polling this time around. Looks like the Republican establishment has settled on McCain. 10 bucks says Huck is his runningmate.
Endorsements mean nothing in SC. The large veteran contingent and moderate Republicans are overwhelmingly leaning toward McCain. The crazies are siding with Huckabee. There is little middle ground in SC. Honestly, there are so many more nutjobs than reasonable people that I don't know how anyone other than the Huckster can win. Of course, my viewpoint on this is slightly skewed as I live in ultra-fascist Upstate. The coast is more moderate.
I'm not sure if the Lindsey Graham comment was a joke or not, but Graham is one of the most hated politicians in the state because of his non-insane immigration views. He's basically one step above Hillary among the conservatives in this state.

Angry Vet wrote on January 12, 2008 8:59 PM:I don't think Bloomberg would run against McCain. It would note represent a very good probability of success.
I would concur with NYC if the race were HRC v. Huckabee. Then we would have to deal with President Huckabee. Now THAT is a scary proposition....
Check this new CNN general election poll released today. Clinton and Obama both CRUSH Giuliani, Huckabee and Romney (all by double-digits) but McCain runs 15% better than the other Republicans and ties both Democrats. Link.

I don't think those GE polls really mean much. Seems like apples (GE) and oranges (nominating contests) to me. Note many people are out there actively comparing the possible candidates except for those who will already vote for their parties' nominee.

I heartily agree that candidate-specific head-to-head match-ups this early in the game should be taken with a whole bag of salt. The GE polls to keep an eye on at this point in the cycle I think are the Generic Democrat vs. Generic Republican. Those might actually tell you something useful about the overall mood of the electorate even this far out.
I noted with interest that in 2003 and early 2004 generic unnamed candidate polls seemed to suggest a pretty even presidential race even when Bush was still beating all the Democrats in named trial heats by 5-10% or more -- and any given candidate might be up in one and down in another, just like this year. Then as soon as it became clear that John Kerry would be the nominee, his numbers pulled right into line with the previous generic polls and that of course was about where things ended up.

MCamnesty will never get my vote
go duncan hunter !
Having lived in SC for five years, mostly in Columbia, my thought is: big surprise.
But it may be a clue that the GOP royalists have anointed McCain as their guy. For the time being, at least.
