Rudy Invokes 9/11 To Deflect Questions About Iowa Loss
Rudy Giuliani, speaking about his sixth place finish in Iowa yesterday:
"None of this worries me -- Sept. 11, there were times I was worried."
As a GOP operative I know loves to say, the man has "9/11 Tourettes." Can't help himself.

You have to admit, he's right-- running from the carnage of a 110-story building crashing behind you is slightly scarier than running from the carnage of your $50 million campaign imploding behind you.

Sorry, this is a little unrelated to the post, but I think it's representative of what happened last night.
On MSNBC they're doing a report on the violence in Kenya, and they stopped to say that the whole country was jubilant last night because of Obama's win. They apparently ran into his uncle who of course passed along congratulations and praise. Most importantly, the headline on the bottom of the screen:
Obama win resonates in Africa, and around the world.
That's it folks. This is the guy to restore this country's good name around the globe.

I was thinking last night about how Duncan Hunter has not left the race yet, and I came to the conclusion that he is needed by the Republicans to be the wacko on the trail, the candidate who can keep the right-wing crazies placated until the field solidifies a bit. Hunter can't quit yet because it's too early for any of the real candidates to absorb his stance. I think Giuliani fits into this as well. It's too early for Romney and Huckabee to start banging the 9/11 drum so the R's have to keep Giuliani around to make noise and remind people of the R's connection to 9/11.

Rudi, how do you rate the experience of finishing in sixth place compared to the shock of discovering that your extended family never noticed that you and your cousin were exchanging marriage vows?
Explain that one to us. You had a church wedding and no one in your entire family noticed that two cousins were at the altar!

His whole personal history is almost as phony as The Chimp's. He paints himself as a born & bred Brooklyn tough guy when in reality, he grew up on Long Island. Garden City South & North Bellmore to be exact. I've lived in N. Bellmore for 27 years & I used to deliver mail that house in G.C. South for 5 years, after he moved. Believe me, communities don't get any more lilly white than those two.

Don't we believe in heroes in this country any more.
Are we all so busy we can't give credit to someone who preformed heroically when we needed a hero.
I have faith in all the God fearing people in this country that they recognize a true American hero and will
vote overwhelmingly for this man who saved us on 9-11.

Here are some other comparison's for Rudy to rationalize his defeat in Iowa
1) Having to pay Donna $6.8 million doesn't come close to the blood money I'm making off 9/11.
2) The loss of the election is nothing like the loss of my erection.
3) Blowing off one primary falls doesn't equal a few of the other mistakes I've lived through: Bernie Kerik; the annulment of my first marriage after 14 years, doing business in Qatar with the man who shielded the mastermind of 9/11; building my emergency control center in the sky near the twin towers; giving the police and firemen defective radios that were not able to communicate with one another. Now those were beauties.
Try those out after New Hampshire in your next tv ad, Rudy. By the way, how are your kids?

rj, the daily show and the colbert report is going back on air on the 7th.
Without the writers though since they couldn't sign a deal with WGA the same was as Letterman did.
And if Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert both are members of the WGA, which they most probably are, then they can't write for their own shows either, or they would be scabs like Leno...
Also, I doubt any pro union politicians would be ok crossing the picket line.
So I'm not sure what the new shows will be like...

I lived in downtown NYC before, during and after 9/11, and the main thing Rudy did was act as a 'face,' like a comforting newscaster.
Operationally, his pre 9/11 decisions were horrible, including the lack of decent communications devices for the firefighters (despite having years to fix this known issue), and Rudy's decision to place the command center inside the WTC complex.
The only 'halo' effect for Rudy during that time was that he was perceived as being competent only in comparison to the Shrub in Chief.

Someone upthread talked about Rudy's penchant for saying 9/11 as having transcended parody... I think that's right, it's now pathology. I seriously think that he has wrapped his ego up so tightly in that brief moment when people liked him that he truly sees himself as the 9/11 hero, and not much else. His constant 9/11 incantation is not merely a cynical political ploy, it's signs of serious mental disturbance.
Well, hey, if Krauthammer can play long-distance psychoanalyst, why can't I?

I will try to find some information on the radios. I just recently got a computer in the house and my granddaughter is teaching me how to use it. And one of my friends told me that the blogs were fun.
I live alone and always depended on
tv, but it is nice to talk to people who seem to know a lot about politics. Some of my friends at the coffee shop are talking a lot about Obama so I might switch to him even though I have always been republican.
Thankyou for your help.

It does seem to me that Rudy spiraling out of control so badly with his 9/11 references could have one good effect: I think he's people's ability to use the event to get a knee-jerk reaction. I'm not minimizing its importance in history, but I think that once someone has spent so much time touting it in the public sphere that even the more die-hard conservatives end up saying "Man, that guy's just exploiting it," then as a country we'll be moving away from the position where it can be exploited to justify any abuse of power, or the rolling back of any right in the name of safety.
Or at least, it's a hope I have.

Cynthia, welcome to the blogosphere. You will find a wide range of opinions but none will substitute for a critical mind. Don't trust the TV news reports you hear or any one media outlet for that matter. Trust your own eyes, ears and common sense.
The Internet is a wonderful resource where you can easily investigate what public officials said and did in the past and compare that to what they are saying now as they try to get your vote.
And by all means, don't be afraid to ask questions and admit you don't understand something. That's how we all learn.

cynthia. the main stream media isn't gonna tell you that rudi is a putz
the radios are only the tip of the iceberg
look up where rudy located the Police Emergency Command center
in 1993, a commission sturying the first attack on the world trade center reccommennded that the police emergency command center should be located in a bunker in Brooklyn
rudy choose to locate the police emergency command center IN THE WORLD TRADE CENTER
a bunker in Brooklyn might have been safer, but rudt wanted an apartment where he could spend time with his mistress, and Brooklyn was too far away for rudy's little love nest
Belzer said it best
THE REASON RUDY WAS WALKING AROUND MANHATTAN ON 9-11 IS BECAUSE THE FUCKING IDIOT DIDN'T HAVE AN EMERGENCY COMMAND CENTER TO GO TO
IT WAS DESTROYED IN THE ATTACK, JUST LIKE THE 1993 REPORT SAID IT WOULD BE DESTROYED
still think rudy is a "hero" ???

Cynthia,
Read "Grand Illusion: The Untold Story of Rudolph Giuliani and 9/11" by Wayne Barrett. Perhaps, the reason you don't know what Giuliani did wrong is that this definitive book hasn't received the publicity it deserves. Many of the well-documented fact in the book have only recently begun to come into wider currency--as the endless campaign continues.

To answer Michael, I agree with Dave Bowman and the other New Yorkers. On 9/11 Rudy struck just the right tone of providing information and being soothing. We sure weren't getting it from Bush.
If you recall Bush was nowhere to be seen, and a la Katrina, he didn't come to New York, had no plans to come to New York (in the days that followed) until he was literally shamed into coming to New York because the country was looking more at Rudy at the national figure than at the president.
And then, when Bush comes to New York, purely, purely by a stroke of fate, one fireman yells out "I can't hear you" and Bush gets his iconic moment at Ground Zero as this powerful leader of the people who is going to go get the bad guys. History is rewritten in that moment for Bush.

Cynthia- if you are real (always a question with the internet!), Rudy certainly performed MUCH better than our president on 9-11. I remember seeing him all over the TV and wondering, "Where the hell is our president?!"
That being said, ask New York City, where he was "America's Mayor," what they think of him. Not much.
Also, (once again if you are real), be prepared for some STRONG opinions on the blogs. You can get tons of information, but get ready for some nice people and plenty who will show off their asshole-ry in a heartbeat.

I don’t live in NY, so all I know of Rudy is from the tube. He DID appear to be a voice of calm in an unparalleled event no one was prepared for. i.e., he did his job. I preform minimum job requirements every day, but that doesn’t make me heroic nor qualify me for the Presidency (nor even for a raise) – it simply lets me keep my job. Granted, give the man his due for his efforts, but don’t give him more than he’s qualified for. Regarding what he may have done wrong, I cannot comment except to say in such an overwhelming situation, no one could perform flawlessly. Yeah, to a non-New Yorker like me, the guy seemed to rise to the occasion and acted like a mayor should. However, the Presidency is more than a reward for simply doing your job in a particular situation.
As for the Grinning Chimp megalomaniac, Patricia in NYC is right – Rudy was getting way too much national attention.

Rudy has the blood of those killed during 9/11 on his hands. He had more to do with people getting hurt then people getting helped. The 9/11 families can not stand this guy. If there where such a law, he would have been burned at the stake.
And yet he platforms on this very topic and can't figure out why he is despised?

Rudy is a one issue candidate and that is the reason he finished 6th with only 3% of the vote in Iowa. Plus Iowa is socially very conservative (Huckabee won because he is evangelical !) and they don't like Rudi's 3-time-married, history of affairs, lifestyle out there.
