Martin Luther King's Son To Edwards: You Made Poverty An Issue In This Election

Since we think the Edwards campaign should still get coverage, even if his candidacy is a long shot, we're gonna highlight this. Just moments before the start of the South Carolina debate, the Edwards campaign sent out a letter from Martin Luther King III, the son of the slain civil rights leader, hailing Edwards' success in focusing the campaign on poverty issues.

"You have almost single-handedly made poverty an issue in this election," King wrote to Edwards.

Look, this is true. When the history of this race is written, it will register that Edwards had a salutary effect on the debate during this campaign on multiple issues, poverty only being one of them. Full letter after the jump.

Dear Senator Edwards:

It was good meeting with you yesterday and discussing my father's legacy. On the day when the nation will honor my father, I wanted to follow up with a personal note.

There has been, and will continue to be, a lot of back and forth in the political arena over my father's legacy. It is a commentary on the breadth and depth of his impact that so many people want to claim his legacy. I am concerned that we do not blur the lines and obscure the truth about what he stood for: speaking up for justice for those who have no voice.

I appreciate that on the major issues of health care, the environment, and the economy, you have framed the issues for what they are -- a struggle for justice. And, you have almost single-handedly made poverty an issue in this election.

You know as well as anyone that the 37 million people living in poverty have no voice in our system. They don't have lobbyists in Washington and they don't get to go to lunch with members of Congress. Speaking up for them is not politically convenient. But, it is the right thing to do.

I am disturbed by how little attention the topic of economic justice has received during this campaign. I want to challenge all candidates to follow your lead, and speak up loudly and forcefully on the issue of economic justice in America.

From our conversation yesterday, I know this is personal for you. I know you know what it means to come from nothing. I know you know what it means to get the opportunities you need to build a better life. And, I know you know that injustice is alive and well in America, because millions of people will never get the same opportunities you had.

I believe that now, more than ever, we need a leader who wakes up every morning with the knowledge of that injustice in the forefront of their minds, and who knows that when we commit ourselves to a cause as a nation, we can make major strides in our own lifetimes. My father was not driven by an illusory vision of a perfect society. He was driven by the certain knowledge that when people of good faith and strong principles commit to making things better, we can change hearts, we can change minds, and we can change lives.

So, I urge you: keep going. Ignore the pundits, who think this is a horserace, not a fight for justice. My dad was a fighter. As a friend and a believer in my father's words that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere, I say to you: keep going. Keep fighting. My father would be proud.

Sincerely,

Martin L. King, III

The S.C. debate has begun. Thus far, Edwards is the candidate most hitting his marks. The squabbling between Clinton and Obama is off-putting.

I have long thought that Edwards' role in this campaign is to goad others to take up these issues. So I hope he hangs in there and hammers these issues home. As I've said many times, I'd love to see Edwards put in charge of fighting the insurance companies to get one-party universal health care for all. That is surely something Martin Luthor King would have fought for too!

agreed. I think Edwards should stay in it. He's had a very healthy effect on the debate from the beginning. He can only make things better.

made my day

No matter what you say about his chances and strategy after NH and NV, he showed in this debate that he can stand on his own as an equal to the two celebrity candidates and deliver a very clear and compelling message. He has distinguished himself and we are all better for it. I hope he stays in the race for the duration if for no other reason than to actually focus the debate on the tough issues.

And by the way, Edwards has posed the question about what the lobbyists expect for their millions to Hillary and Obama directly in at least the last 2 debates and Hillary has yet to give a direct response. Anyone wonder why that is?

Now, lets start VOTING for John Edwards, so he may be a real voice in Washington!

"Since we think the Edwards campaign should still get coverage, even if his candidacy is a long shot"

Gee, that's awful kind of ya!

Maybe the blogosphere oughta get a clue about what the corporate media has manufactured in terms of the race for the Democratic nomination and start focusing on the man who has single handedly kept the agenda in the campaign left of center not just on poverty but also on the war, health care, education, Katrina relief and everything else: John Edwards.

TPM and all the major Democratic/left blogs have completely gone along with the creation of the two person race between either the first black or the first woman storyline. Thank God Edwards is refusing to go away. His continued presence in the campaign is the only reason any issues ever get discussed!

Why bother? Election Central decided a year ago who it would cover and help put in office. Our biggest problem, has been the corruption of the press. But the candidates that mention it get destroyed by it. The press's lying polls, and the HAVA machines will put the corporate candidates in office. Turn off the box.

Edwards has proved his compassion and intelligence throughout the race. He constantly shows why he would be a great president. He must stay in to keep the corporate candidates focused on what matters, and maybe to be VP or have a high-level cabinet position.

Ain't that the truth. MLK III recognizes that there are not just two candidates who are "formidable and impressive," Greg. Why don't you?

Edwards is bringing the Democratic party back to it's moral roots (which is where we can win in the fall, btw). But the pundits don't seem to notice. I'm glad MLK III did.

Too bad the bigger issue with most voters is why, along with nearly everything else about Edwards, is it that his hi-falutin' rhetoric doesn't match with his Senate voting record. He voted for the 1999 version of the Bankruptcy Act (along with every Republican), that President Clinton vetoed as "too hard on the poor and middle class."

He also voted for the 2000 Bankruptcy Act and against both Wellstone Amendments that would give the poor and middle class breaks against the most odious provisions of this bill.

That's why he's not getting anywhere. He's a big, fat phony and everybody who can read and research anything about John Edwards's public and private life knows it.
