It's Official: Rudy Withdraws, Backs McCain

As expected, Rudy Giuliani just held a press conference with John McCain at the Reagan Library, in which Rudy dropped out of the race and endorsed McCain.

Rudy said that his decision to back McCain wasn't difficult, after he'd said last year that he would have supported McCain if he hadn't been running himself. "If I'd endorsed anyone else, you would say I was flip-flopping," Rudy joked.

We'll have video posted in a little while.

Late Update: Here's that video:

Also breaking news in Georgia:

Both of Georgia's US Senators Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson are preparing to endorse McCain. The Georgia primary is on Super Tuesday.

I watched the interview/video of Rudy dropping from the race, very unclimatic, no gaffes, but similar to his race, a fizzle out speech from the jet he was flying in where there was a controlled setting.

In respect to his assertion that McCain would be the best commander in chief, I agree. I think that if we had effective management coming from the POTUS we can limit the financial drain (in part) as a consequence of the war having be run from the Vice Presidents office and the policies of Rumsfeld.

If there was effective management I would imagine that would do more for our economy than simply hot air from the lips of a former CEO and MA governor.

But I don't think that endorsements without organizations matter all that much, If Alan Keyes endorsed Mit, would it matter?

It takes an organization similar to FL and SC where senators and governors reach out to their networks and get out a vote. Can Arnold assist in CA? I believe so.

My honest feeling is that on one level all the candidates are fine people, both parties, just some really not in my opinion fit to be POTUS.

While Rudy was good for NYC, there are many of us in small towns, rural America who are certain that that does not represent us.

I'm also at a gut level rejecting leveraging 911 for political gains, I think that the WMD, torture, eavesdropping, and other 'bad ideas' associated with that event and day just turns me off to the idea of yet more manipulating that event.

1 delegate, and an endorsement without organization doesn't deliver.

Best of luck Rudy...

Now let's all work EXTREMELY HARD to rid ourselves of Mitt "I can flip flop on any issue" Romney.

Laughing it could have been worse.

Ron Paul captured a whopping 3% of primary votes FL, while rivals Tom Tancredo, Duncan Hunter, and Alan Keyes each scored a statistical 0%. This victory proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that Ron Paul has what it takes to become the next Republican presidential candidate. To top off his victory, Paul also beat former candidate Fred Thompson, who got a mere 1% of the Florida vote.

Anybody catch this? The latest Rasmussen poll shows head-to-head matchups between McCain and the two leading Democratic contenders as:

McCain 48%, Clinton 40%

McCain 47%, Obama 41%

See the details at: http://rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/election_20082/2008_presidential_election/john_mccain_match_ups/election_2008_mccain_vs_clinton_and_obama

On the other hand, if the election were held today .....

people would be really upset, because it's supposed to be held in November.

Now I'm concerned for McCain's campaign . . . RUDE-ee has been wrong about virtually every-farging-thing SINCE he ran for Mayor of 9-11 . . . His support casts McCain in a really poor light.

user-pic

OK, I have to take exception to this. Giuliani said that McCain would be the best commander-in-chief of the United States. There is no commander-in-chief of the United States. The US president is commander-in-chief of the armed forces. Nothing more. He is not the commander-in-chief of Congress; he is not the commander-in-chief of the federal courts; and most importantly, he is not the commander-in-chief of the American people.

Does McCain get the Johnny Damon endorsement by extension? What about Robert Duvall?

Giuliani's endorsement will help the McMentum as much as Pat Robertson bolstered Rudy's numbers.
