Did Hillary Have A "Dean Scream" Moment?

The New York Times reports that Hillary had her Dean Scream moment in New Jersey last night. Sort of, anyway.

Thanks for pushing more sympathy votes Hillary's way with your irresponsible coverage!

Maybe she'll come from behind in SC just like NH and the whole thing will be over:)

user-pic

I haven't seen it, but yes. Yes, she did.

Okay, so maybe I'm getting desperate here.

user-pic

You see a Dean but I see fire. Go Hillary!

user-pic

Excellent point katie. I think they should put a copy of that outrageous t-shirt on the front page as well. Let's just get it over with and look forward to 4 years of president mccain.

user-pic

We probably should have waited for a video to post this story...is there going to be a video...?

user-pic

I've been asking around for vid. No one seems to have it.

user-pic

Yeah, just like you, Greg Sargent, now had your "Brain Meltdown" moment. Sort of, anyway.

What kind of news/reporting is this??? You're losing it!

I do expect better from you guys at TPM.

user-pic

It's sad how much the MSM favors Obama. How about a little balance?

user-pic

So the NYT has another idiot moment, the home to Frank Rich and Maureen Dowd and others who’ve served nothing but lies and hate during the primaries.

What, exactly, do you Greg think merits this as “news” at TPM-EC?

user-pic

Say anything.

Change nothing.

user-pic

It's really depressing how lacking in basic reading comp skills some commenters are.

Isn't it kind of obvious that I'm criticizing the Times piece?

I mean, saying that it's "silly" and "empty-calorie snark" really should be a dead giveaway.

user-pic

When can we get the audio/video?

user-pic

I'm sure greg is working hard on getting a transcript and video. Just like he did with obama's testy exchange with reporters. Yeah I'm sure.

tpm = clown show

user-pic
Isn't it kind of obvious that I'm criticizing the Times piece?
The intro to your piece Greg:
Hillary finally had her Dean Scream moment!

Or maybe she didn't.

I just can't tell.

No, it’s not kind of obvious that you’re criticizing the Times piece.

It's really depressing how lacking in basic reading comp skills some commenters are.
Oh, thank you. That’s cute. Excuse me for not worshiping at your feet Oh Mighty Greg.
user-pic

Greg, yes, it's obvious you're not giving this much credibility, but honestly this piece doesn't deserve any attention; certainly not without any video.

I'm not a Hillary supporter, but although you may have the best intentions in posting this, it's such a subjective piece. Maybe would have been better to make this a Horse's Mouth entry.

user-pic

Greg, in the interest of fairness, I think "NYT Pays People to Fabricate Another Scream Moment" might actually be considered newsworthy. This is not.

user-pic

PenPal, your inability to detect the obvious sarcasm in Greg's original post here certainly does suggest a deficit of reading comprehension skills.

Indeed, that's pretty much the definition of reading comprehension, right? Accurately ascertaining the intended meaning of the passage? And this wasn't exact unambiguous.

user-pic

Greg,

I keep telling you about the headlines. Seriously. People fly into a fit of rage and cannot even see straight enough to read the actual post at that point.

Grant,

Sigh, I will bite. Dowd is obviously a useless character but what did Frank Rich do? Can you point out any specific inaccuracies etc. in his columns?

user-pic

the poor clintons...always the victims.

user-pic

Thanks, Michael. Guess I'll have to be even more heavy handed next time.

MSM favors Obama = Clinton talking point, BluePuppy, and nothing more.

The media has given Hillary a free ride on her hyped up "experience", which incidentally her entire campaign rests on. The media has also given the Clintons a virtual free ride on examining their fallacious attacks and dirty tactics. TPM is not representative of the MSM, and I would say that it is fairly balanced overall, regardless of this silly story. If you want a recent example of how the MSM isn't overly friendly to Obama just look at the recent story ABC hyped up about Obama having a "tussle" with a reporter. Give me a break, if you think that the media has been overly harsh to Hillary, you have had your head up Hillary's ass for far too long, come out for some air.

Alas, I expect nothing more from BluePuppy, at least you are consistently backwards and ignorant my friend. Keep dreamin'.

user-pic
What, exactly, do you Greg think merits this as “news” at TPM-EC?

This was sort of my thought in reading the post. Then I saw Mr Sargent's response:

It's really depressing how lacking in basic reading comp skills some commenters are.

Isn't it kind of obvious that I'm criticizing the Times piece?

Well, this probably says more about me than about Mr Sargent, but I guess that my reading comprehension skills are quite poor indeed, because I really did not pick up on the intended derision. Sarcasm can be hard to convey without tone-of-voice cues. At any rate, I agree with the folks who say that the headline here could have been better-written (for what little my own opinion is worth).

user-pic

Silly Gregory,
don't you know by now that you are either an ankle biting HillaryHater and/or a racist lying Obamacide?
There is NO middle ground.
What will be wonderful is when the factions go in the voting booth on Feb 5... I expect continuous nationwide reports of exploding heads as they notice that the name of their Mortal Enemy even dares to appear on the ballot.
BTW:
Go Kittens for Mittens!

user-pic

Greg -- that Horse's Mouth piece -- not obvious that it was critical? "Silly" and "empty-calorie snark" -- not critical?

user-pic

This Bud's for Greg!

The Clintons — or “the 2-headed monster,” as the The New York Post dubbed the tag team that clawed out wins in New Hampshire and Nevada — always go where they need to go, no matter the collateral damage. Even if the damage is to themselves and their party.... Bill’s transition from elder statesman, leader of his party and bipartisan ambassador to ward heeler and hatchet man has been seamless — and seamy. ... It’s odd that the first woman with a shot at becoming president is so openly dependent on her husband to drag her over the finish line. She handed over South Carolina to him, knowing that her support here is largely derivative.

"Greg wrote on January 24, 2008 11:08 AM:

healy has been doing a hit job on Hillary since the nyts put him in charge of her coverage. That's the same type of coverage the hyts used to put bush in the white house twice. healy is a hack. Why he gets a post without mentions of the lies, hate and just plain bogus coverage he has been allowed to print has some wondering if tpm has joined the ranks of the "liberal media."

user-pic

Stop wasting your time interpreting something based on nothing but likely shoddy reporting like the ABC News story and focus on getting the video.

user-pic

The 'Dean scream' had nothing to do with Dean and everything to do with the owners of the media getting rid of the strongest Democratic candidate.

user-pic

I suspect that "Dean Scream moment" is overstating what happened, and your skepticism is warranted. Still, wish you had applied that same level of skepticism when the report was about Obama's meltdown. Guess only one candidate deserves the benefit of the doubt on this page.

user-pic

Hillary could drop her pants and dance naked in Time Square and she wouldn't have a Dean scream moment. The press is on her's and Obama's side. At least until the primaries are over. Then, she or he will definitely have one.

user-pic

Merryll it's interesting that you bring that up. Dean was an insurgent candidate and the party and right-wing media did not want him to win. It appears that its the same thing with obama. Here is an interesting piece, which I am sure won't get the time of day on this site.

It kind of speaks volumes about what is going on, which is really sad. People's votes and desires don't count in america. Too sad and depressing.

user-pic

It’s the electability, stupid. Democrats, please pay attention: Hillary cannot win the general and that is the ONLY point worth putting out at this crucial moment of the primaries. Don't get distracted or side-tracked: put every other piece of info, scrappy fight, comment by surrogates, squabble, newspaper article, blog, story and propaganda-filled speech aside. Its not about race or gender or policies or change or experience. You only need to know ONE piece of information to make your decision: no candidate can win a general election that is not supported by half of her own party. Keep your eye on the 11/08 ball before it’s too late. She is the only thing that will rally the struggling Republican Party. Tell every Democrat and Independent you know: a vote for Hillary is a vote for John McCain, HIS war in Iraq and an economy that will not recover for a very long time. Why does the DNC not recognize this? We are running out of time to put an end to the eight, and I now fear 12, years of negative and never-endingly bad mojo and the moment to do something about it is right now. So stop talking and go out and do something. One simple first step? Email The DNC and tell them how you feel about the way The Clintons are leading our party and running their campaign. http://www.democrats.org/page/s/contactissues . Pass it on.

user-pic

If there's not a video playing 24/7 on CNN, then there is not a "Dean scream" moment.

QED.

user-pic

katie, please give it a rest.

user-pic

What has happened to TPM? Why is this nonsense from Patrick Healy at the NYT being posted without any commentary or context -- just an interrogatory question mark? Yellng? Frenzy? Bellowing? Is there any substantiation for Healy's subjective assessment? Could it be that Hillary is hoarse from campaigning? Is this just another variation of the 'shrill' commentary that we've all come to know and love?

Also, it's bad enough that we let the media manufacture the Dean scream to help take out one of our candidates. But now we're linking to NYT blog commentary that's trying to perpetuate it.

Stop the madness, please. Cover the issues, not the perceived personalities.

user-pic

What did the supposed Dean scream have to do with anything! It was cooked up by the press. Everyone was screaming at at event. It is absolutely ridiculous to cover this irrelevant so-called news about Hillary. The press needs to cover the important things, not mindless trivia.

user-pic

Like how about covering her non-existent senate voting record? That would be a nice place for starters. Other than her war votes, voting for every child left behind, and revoking bankruptcy protection for the middle class. We know zippo about her senate voting record.

user-pic

During the debates in Nevada, Brian Williams had to remind Hillary he was not that far away.

Hillary is just shrill, therefore, you could say anytime she opens her mouth is a "Dean scream".

If you can't win on your voting record, ethics, or persona, attack your running mate and hope women will feel sorry for you.

The Clinton couple are no different than the current administration. Our politics have been in the toliet since the days of Nixon. Isn't it time to elevate the process a bit?

user-pic

Greg rules!

You people criticizing him have no reading comprehension skills and no sense of irony.

user-pic

Greg, Could you PLEASE address the news from this morning (MSNBC)of Obama pushing the wrong buttons for 6 different votes?

I have the link to LA Times but have been told it does not work. If someone in your news room would kindly find the story and post it. It is important news.

He pushed the wrong button, he asserted at the time. Two of the admitted flubs were on hotly contested issues.
By Peter Wallsten, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
January 24, 2008
Barack Obama angered fellow Democrats in the Illinois Senate when he voted to strip millions of dollars from a child welfare office on Chicago's West Side. But Obama had a ready explanation: He goofed.

"I was not aware that I had voted no," he said that day in June 2002, asking that the record be changed to reflect that he "intended to vote yes."

This to me, is very important information for the voters to consider.

Thanks you.

Just what exactly was the "Dean Scream" supposed to have done to Howard Dean's campaign. It came after he had already been beaten soundly in Iowa by both Kerry and Edwards, after he had a large lead in the polls. The scream came after the Iowa results came in, so why do people keep trying to attribute some big momentum swing to his post Iowa vote results, when he had already lost momentum.

Why do so many people in the Media continue to repeat such absurd fairy tales. Dean got beaten badly in Iowa, and then he shouted, or screamed, or yelled, while addressing his supporters.

One more time; he got badly beaten in Iowa, and the "Dean scream" had nothing to do with it. Once he had lost in Iowa to Kerry and Edwards he was done for, scream or no scream, so quit repeating such conflated nonsense, dressed up as political insight.

user-pic

Come on over to Ron Paul's Freedom Train, Folks. No Flim Flam Flip Floppers, No PMS Screamers, No 100 Years/Trillions of OUR dollars for wars warmongers, over here. Just "real" true blue Americans that know all the issues and what needs to be done to get us back on track. A constitutional limited republic government thats for the people. His past record speaks for itself. Come join us, you'll feel so much better about yourself and your great country.

user-pic

Iowa was and is a survey of Democratic insiders, which at that time meant 'not Dean'. Nobody loses Iowa any way but badly, due to the arm twisting that goes on by the professional pols, and the 15% threshold. The scream footage was a tool used by the owners of media, to keep the status quo, otherwise, why do it?

user-pic

That's why Iowa is first. Lots of party pros, without all those pesky citizens.

user-pic

Michael A, thanks for posting that yahoo link. Interesting reading there.
