Union Leader Endorses McCain
John McCain just got a good break in the New Hampshire primary, picking up the endorsement of the state's largest newspaper the New Hampshire Union Leader. The paper is a long-time conservative standard-bearer in state politics, so their support could potentially influence a decent number of GOP voters.
"What is most compelling about McCain, however, is that his record, his character, and his courage show him to be their most trustworthy, competent, and conservative of all those seeking the nomination," the paper says. "Simply put, McCain can be trusted to make informed decisions based on the best interests of his country, come hell or high water."

If Huckabee wins Iowa, I think McCain has real shot in NH. Then lord knows what'll happen.

You should change the title, Eric. It looks like the leader of a union has endorsed McCain, not that the Union Leader, a newspaper, has endorsed him.

Joe McQuaid, Union Leader publisher, in his own words:
But I'm not sure it's going to assuage the fellow who called to ask me if this was still a conservative newspaper and, if so, how come we were running so many liberals' letters?
My answers: Yep, still conservative in our editorial outlook. And, the liberals have been writing a lot.
Even with the online outlet, or perhaps because of it, I expect we will receive a lot more presidential politics letters before the Jan. 8 election. So please don't wait to get in your two cents' worth. The editors tell me that such letters received after the 22nd of this month may not make it into print or cyberspace.
Speaking of deadlines, Manchester's community technical college has set Sunday, Dec. 16, as the last day in which you can vote on its new name.
(Full disclosure: I serve on the president's advisory board at the school. Don't worry, they usually don't take my advice. But the coffee is good and President Darlene Miller is a golfer, so they have that going for them, which is nice.)

Given the low opinion the Union Leader seems to have of its non-conservative readers, it's a surprise they don't all cancel their subscriptions.
