Romney On Huckabee: Attacks On Religion Go Too Far

In an interview this morning on NBC, Mitt Romney responded to Mike Huckabee's comment about Mormons believing that Jesus and Satan are brothers. Romney declined to address the specifics of Mormon theology, saying that leaders at the LDS Church have already gone over it. "But I think attacking someone's religion is really going too far," He said. "It's just not the American way, and I think people will reject that."

This is probably a sign that the race between them isn't about to get any cleaner anytime soon, and we'll be hearing more about religious differences in the next few weeks whether Romney likes it or not.

Romney added: "Oh, unless you are attacking an atheist. You Evangelicals can attack atheists all you want for not sharing your religious beliefs. But not Mormons."

user-pic

As illustrated by his soft spot for "redeemed" rapists and desire to round up and quarantine AIDs victims, Huckabee is probably more deluded by dogma than Romney.

user-pic

Religion is USian politics goes too far. I am done with the dueling Rapturian bullshit. Everyone knows that the FSG hates this stuff.

Romney should be asked about the Mormons beliefs reguarding black people prior 1978.
He should be asked about how the Mormons believe people became black. Huckleberry should be asked about the place the woman hold in American society while he's asking so many questions. Maybe this will be asked later during the year.

user-pic

Apparently Huckabee is right on this one! It's part of the Mormon creation myth and fundamental to their praxis and eschatology.

Mormons do believe that Jesus and Satan are brothers, so why is that considered an attack on Romney when he is so proud to be a Mormon and why are Mormons leaders not being honest and upfront about their beliefs? I know that this is their belief for a fact because I was raised a Mormon.

Man, I can't wait to watch the debate in 30 minutes!

Mormons do believe Jesus and Satan are brothers! Both are spirit-sons of God -- as are all of us, by the way. So I think Huck is getting a bum rap on this. And Mitt is being extremely disingenuous in calling Huck's remark an "attack."

From the official LDS website:

A Savior and Leader Was Needed

When the plan for our salvation was presented to us in the spirit world, we were so happy that we shouted for joy (see Job 38:7).

We understood that we would have to leave our heavenly home for a time. We would not live in the presence of our heavenly parents. While we were away from them, all of us would sin and some of us would lose our way. Our Heavenly Father knew and loved each one of us. He knew we would need help, so he planned a way to help us.

We needed a Savior to pay for our sins and teach us how to return to our Heavenly Father. Our Father said, "Whom shall I send?" (Abraham 3:27). Two of our brothers offered to help. Our oldest brother, Jesus Christ, who was then called Jehovah, said, "Here am I, send me" (Abraham 3:27).

Jesus was willing to come to the earth, give his life for us, and take upon himself our sins. He, like our Heavenly Father, wanted us to choose whether we would obey Heavenly Father's commandments. He knew we must be free to choose in order to prove ourselves worthy of exaltation. Jesus said, "Father, thy will be done, and the glory be thine forever" (Moses 4:2).

Satan, who was called Lucifer, also came, saying, "Behold, here am I, send me, I will be thy son, and I will redeem all mankind, that one soul shall not be lost, and surely I will do it; wherefore give me thine honor" (Moses 4:1). Satan wanted to force us all to do his will. Under his plan, we would not be allowed to choose. He would take away the freedom of choice that our Father had given us. Satan wanted to have all the honor for our salvation.

I cannot believe that in this country, in the year 2007 we are allowing this absolute utter bullshit to infect a presidential campaign.

I mean come on. That anyone at all can possibly take seriously candidates who believe in magic underwear, think Native Americans are a lost tribe of Israel, believe in magic gold books no one could see, polygamy, trace their family roots back to Adam and Eve, believe the earth is 6,000 years old, question evolution, and on and on.

Seriously. Is this what we've become? A nation of complete blithering morons who'd rather believe in fairy tales and lies because it's easier than fixing the problems we have?

I could not agree with you more.

I'm off to read my horoscope for the day. This ouija board gets tiresome after a while.

All fun and joke aside: I thought the exact same thing.

For anyone who is interested, Mormon creation mythology is lifted straight out of Milton's "Paradise Lost."

A modest question:

Why doesn't their God make an appearance and tell us what it thinks of all those conflicting claims about who has the direct pipeline to it?

God; call us. You can appear on Fox or Oprah, and sort the whole thing out.

Don't be such a lazy arse. Time for you to step in and put an end to all this confusion. Get your lazy arse off those clouds and fix it. No more candles for you, until you hold up your end.

Watching two front-running GOP candidates try to out-Jesus each other in a debate almost makes me wanna give Turd Blossom a big ol' hug.

These guys are toast.

user-pic

I was going to make substantially the same observation as Keith -- that the Mormon mythology concerning Satan is not all that far removed from the medieval Christian mythology of Satan/Lucifer as a fallen archangel. Milton supplements that myth with borrowings from Classical mythology and his own inventions, but the backbone of the story is within the older tradition.

I think Huckabee is trying to refute Romney's claim that Mormons are just as much Christians as Baptists, but without actually flat-out saying so.

In the end, it seems to me, is not so much the specific details of what you believe as how you act on it. Mythology springs from a culture's deepest values, and it's possible to believe in a myth's philosophical truth without believing it to be literally true.

Huckabee is no paragon of religious tolerance, but Romney has made intolerance a centerpiece of his religious posture, witness his religion of the secular nonsense, so he is fair game in this fight. One thing Romney will try is attacking the attacker with an unbecoming behavior claim, trying to belittle his attacker, while appearing to be moderate and genteel, himself. He used the tactic in his race for governor, and is trying it again.

user-pic

Actually, Romney only had it half right! It's time for both of these ignorant, racist, gasbags to go straight to hell, whatever and wherever they think it is!!

user-pic

Oh come on, this has got to be fun.

What is better justice than to come to this point in history, where the alliance of business, religion and oil would explode.

Just like this.

user-pic

After reading the ongoing debate regarding Huckabee's comments on Mormanism, I wonder if it is really possible that Huckabee is capable of performing a true miracle: giving the Democratic presidential candidate a chance to do well in Utah.

user-pic

I think Mitt really needs to give another speech and explain Mormon theology - that's the only way he's going to prevent these kinds of misunderstandings, and I for one would really like to know more about his planet.

user-pic
user-pic

Romney, a BISHOP OF THE MORMON CHURCH, and a former MISSIONARY (how he got out of 'Nam) can't explain his religion.

But he can tell me that I am 'wrong' to worship genius of the secular religion of the founding fathers.

Rot in Hell Mr. Romney.

I love these spammers and their expectation that people want to click on mysterious links. Thanks for the viruses guys, can I have my free IPod now?

Romney fears scrutiny of his core beliefs. Why would someone who served in a bishopric and stake high council and served a two-year full-time mission suddenly feel discomfort discussing his religious beliefs? Why did he delay the inevitable "JFK speech"? Here's why: the White Horse Prophecy. Sure, it's been officially "discounted" but the doctrine is still currently taught in LDS Gospel Doctrine, Priesthood, and Relief Society classes.

The real issue is that Romney has been groomed for fulfilling this role his entire life. The whole point of Mitt Romney's running for office is to eventually establish what Joseph Smith termed a "theodemocracy", a concept that surpasses what even the most devoted evangelical could ever possibly imagine. Romney swore blood oaths to bring this vision of Zion to pass. Even though these temple ceremonies were revised years ago, he is still bound by the part termed the "Law of Consecration"...and any "temple Mormon" apologist reading this blog knows what THAT phrase entails.

The LDS church is a multibillion dollar corporate entity that has resources and international access unfathomed by most lay members and the general public. Their agenda exists and it is real. Why is there no scrutiny of the multiple relationships between Bain, the Carlyle Group, and Ensign Peak Advisors? Heck, I'm still amazed that folks have forgotten past church entanglements with the Watergate burglars, Adnan Khashoggi, and multiple totalitarian regimes. There's so much more to Romney than his contrived outrage.

Goldspinner --

While I have grown weary of defending my Mormon faith on these often-interesting-but-not-infrequently-intolerant-and-condescending comment boards...,

I should note that I have NEVER heard the "White Horse Prophecy" taught in any church class -- not in Indiana, not in Utah, not at two different church-run universities. Nor have I preached it in the Gospel Doctrine and Priesthood courses I have taught. Ever.

So for everyone who assumes that the three-hour block of church we Mormons attend is full of this kind of stuff... it's really not. I'm sure most would be blown away by how unshocking (and yes, sometimes boring) classes generally are.

I could never defend everything my church has done. All churches are run by imperfect persons who make mistakes -- and sometimes by persons that do bad things intentionally. I don't even necessarily agree with every position my church officially takes (see gay marriage). That said, I still know what my faith is and why I have it, even if commenters here want to compare it to believing in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny.

user-pic

Funny, I learned about it at BYU...in Provo. You mean they didn't cover it at Ricks?

user-pic

Oops, I forgot to mention that Hugh Nibley expounded on the topic back when I was in the Ninth Ward...in Sunday School.

user-pic

Anyone read what Baptists are expected to believe? Guess what? They are just as batshit crazy as the Mormons are expected to be.

On the other hand, it is possible to be part of a "faith tradition" and wear it lightly. I find that reasonable. Romney appears to do that. Huckabee however is a full on crazy believing Baptist.

Now, behind the apparent lightness of his relationship to Mormonism LDS Church etc., does Romney hold some secret deep convictions to transform America in some specifically Mormon sense... as opposed to some generically fundamentalist or "Christian" sense? Again, maybe, but I'd much sooner suspect that Huckabee would have an explicitly Baptist agenda that than that Romney would have an explicitly Mormon agenda. On the OTHER hand, Huckabee seems like an interesting human being (completely misguided, but interesting), while Romney seems like a genuine corporate robot.

I really hope they get into the religious debate. It will be FASCINATING!

Me, I prefer Kucinich, then Edwards, then Obama.... and because I vote in Oregon my opinion means absolutely nothing.

user-pic

Anyone who thinks that the 'pugs don't have a chance on '08 haven't seen how really weak our field is. I mean, let's be honest...Obama is inexperienced, Hillary has more baggage than a Sky Cap, and Edwards couldn't beat Kerry who couldn't beat Bush.

I feel sick....

user-pic

Not to be too optimistic or anything, but the Republicans have no one they can all get behind. Problem for them is their party used to be made up of distinct factions who all believed they'd get their piece of the pie, and now their candidates each represent something that one or more factions detests. If Romney gets the nomination, you think they'll all line up behind him? Giuliani? Huckabee?

The Dem candidates have weaknesses, but Dems aren't going to sit at home and not vote, while there'll be tons of Republicans who are too disgusted to vote.

user-pic

Obama being a drug dealer scares me, however his dicrion reminds me of Richard Pryor!!!.

user-pic

This is all completely ridiculous. Mitt couldn't give a shit about all this deep doctrine.
