Report: Gore Unlikely To Endorse In Dem Race

Within the Democratic race, Al Gore is perhaps the most coveted endorsement a candidate could get. However, the New York Sun reports that former aides say he's unlikely to actually do it. A main reason is that he would not want to sully his post-politics work in environmental activism by taking risks in the primary.

"In many respects, he has transcended partisan politics," said former staffer Chris Lehane. "I think he'll be extremely sensitive about doing anything that could potentially impact his global brand."

You mean like endorsing Dean in 03?

The NY Sun interviews the odious Chris Lehane? Pardon me while I give this no weight whatsoever.

user-pic

Come on Al, endorse Obama. You know you want to!

user-pic

Would these be the same unnamed former staffers who told us he was going to run for president himself?

It's Nader's fault.

Gore is smart to stand back and away. If he were to choose the "wrong" candidate and that candidate didn't survive the (bogus and unfair) primaries, then he would take a hit. The "hit" would be amplified 1000-fold by the corporate/GOP-loving media too boot.

He should stand back and only get onboard with someone AFTER the primaries are completed AND said candidate has taken up responsible and acceptable policies vis a vis climate change and environmental policies beyond that.

In such a case, NOT endorsing even the winner would do a lot of good to shame the candidate for unacceptable environmental policies.

Gore has more pull after the primaries rather than before.

Enough with all this; what will Al Gore do, stuff.

There are plenty of candidates to choose from, and the primaries are at hand.

Focus on that, instead of someone who is not involved. Get out the votes for the candidate of your choice, and stop with all these Al Gore distractions.

The party needs to get on with picking someone to oust the Republicans. Park Al Gore for awhile, please.

Al Gore, Tom Harkin, John Kerry, Ted Kennedy - haven't endorsed anyone.

Interesting.

The candidates' plans for ending the war Iraq may be the reason.

user-pic

Seriously, would Gore's endorsement change anyone who prowls these threads mind?

user-pic

Al is the ace in the hole. He isn't going to endorse anyone because he knows that, if we choose the wrong candidate and the polls are bad vs. the republican candidate, he will be called upon at the convention.

"Tom Harkin, John Kerry, Ted Kennedy - haven't endorsed anyone"

I think the fact that they are all in the Senate together complicates things.

Keith,

Good call.

What a dickless wonder Gore has become. Maybe he always was one; he rolled over in 2000 as the press trashed him and the recount fucked him. And having Asshole C. Lehane explain away his spinelessness? Nice. Go away, Al.

Note to Chris Lehane:

Using phrases like "global brand" to describe a PERSON just makes you sound like an asshole.

user-pic

chris lehane was an ass when he campaigned against howard dean in the last cycle.

user-pic

nick, dont believe everything you read in the sun.

an interview with gore from september:

Q: Will you endorse a candidate in the primary?

gore:Odds are that I will.

Q: Who?

gore: I haven't made that decision yet.

Q: Do you feel some obligation to endorse the wife of your former boss?

gore: Uh ... no. I have friendships with her and with the other candidates, and they're all on equal footing at this point as far as I'm concerned.
