Rep. Julia Carson (D-IN) Dies
Rep. Julia Carson (D-IN) has died, less than a month after announcing that she had been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, and would not be running again. The diagnosis was made over this past Summer.
Carson was 69, serving her sixth term, and was both the first African-American and the first woman to represent Indianapolis in Congress.

I'm sorry to hear of her passing. It's never nice to hear of this sort of thing, especially when someone loses the battle against an egregious disease like cancer.
My take is that it will very likely be a very competitive election to replace here.
Here are the Carson win margin results over the past 3 elections:
2002: 53%-44%
2004: 54%-44%
2006: 54%-46%

Here is the margin that John Kerry won the district by in 2004: 58%-42%. That more accurately reflects the partisan nature of the district.

sorry to hear this.. she was a good congresswoman ...she got a lot of grief for being an african american women in a liberal white district but always came out on top.. many times polls had her down but she would pull out a win anyway.
and to steve... absolutely not, this is a safe seat for a capable democrat to win. Carson wasn't your run of the mill white midwestern type so had trouble winning
