New McCain Ad: I've Learned My Lesson On Illegal Immigration
John McCain has another spot up in New Hampshire, responding to Mitt Romney's ad that attacked him over illegal immigration. The ad has two points — that Romney is being disingenuous, and that McCain himself has learned some lessons on the issue, and won't be bothering grassroots Republicans over it anytime soon:
"Before I can win your vote, I know I have to win your respect," McCain says. "And to do that, you know I'll always be straight with you. And on this issue, I've learned that we've got to restore trust in government, and secure our borders."

And, it's too bad. He tried in vain to support a sensible, compromise approach to this issue, bridging the interests represented by such divergent parties as President Bush and Senator Kennedy.
As a Senator from—and longtime resident—of Arizona, he is familiar with the at least three decade old 'immigration issue' and hails from a state which has certainly felt both the good and bad effect. Until Republicans and Democrats can once again sit at the table and find consensus regarding these complex and contentious issues, there is frankly no hope of dealing effectively with it. At all. And, I say that as a law enforcement officer with nearly five years of border experience in Cochise County, in southern Arizona.
His Republican opponents are hopelessly out of touch with their fence building mantra, driven largely by Representative Duncan Hunter, and the entirely simplistic, near-racist screeds of Representative Tancredo. I am no great fan of Senator McCain for many reasons, but he deserves praise for his tireless efforts to actually resolve the issues around illegal immigration.
