Lamar! Wins Leadership Race
Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) was elected chairman of the Senate Republican Conference this morning, defeating the relatively more conservative Richard Burr of North Carolina. Alexander ran for whip last year, but lost to Trent Lott by one vote.
The leadership election was called after Lott's surprise resignation announcement, and current conference chairman Jon Kyl's (AZ) unopposed run for the whip spot.

I can't believe you guys aren't calling this a "duel" rather than an election. That's a golden opportunity for an Alexander Hamilton/Aaron Burr joke gone by the wayside...

Don't forget that Alexander is up for re-election this year, though the Democrat who we were excited for just withdrew from the race last week! It would seem incredible for Dems to let a member of the leadership unchallenged.

Actually, it makes perfect sense to me. It is hard to legitimately claim that as a freshmen rep you are going to be able to bring home more bacon than a member of the leadership, even if said leadership is from the wrong party. I don;t know much about Tennessee politics, but from the outside it seems like without the TVA, Tennessee wouldn't be much of a state, so these people would put a high priority of bringing home the $$$.
