FLASHBACK: Lieberman Said He Wanted To Help Elect "Democratic President In 2008"

In light of Joe Lieberman's endorsement today of John McCain, it seemed worthwhile to recall that during his July 2006 debate with Ned Lamont, Lieberman said he wanted to help elect a Democratic President in 2008 ( via DailyKos):

Lieberman said of Lamont:

"I want Democrats to be back in the majority in Washington and elect a Democratic president in 2008. This man and his supporters will frustrate and defeat our hopes of doing that."

Another day, another Lieber-fib. Look, it's not surprising that Lieberman endorsed a Republican -- doing this sort of stuff is the only way he can get media attention. That's what this is about -- no more, no less.

Leiberman is an American hero

He is the only one who has stood up to liberal indifference.

He is the main reason the head choppers have not won.

He is protecting all the liberals from destroying this country.

God bless american patriots.

Tell me, is anyone surprised by this out there?

Besides, I know of NO DEMOCRAT RUNNING who would want his endorsement anyway. Talk about an albatross around one's neck.

user-pic

Aww Man, this is the nail in the coffin.

Now I can't wear my ratty "Gore - Lieberman 2000" shirt anymore.

Dang. I love that shirt.

user-pic

Why not call it what it is? He lied. A lie is a lie regardless who it is. Dems figured he was lying to get elected, that's why they went for lamont. Just call it what it is another in a long list of LIES.

Lieberliar to the max.

user-pic

hey, a big shout out to the CT a-holes who reelected this quisling.

and what does that say about a man whose supporters can't even spell his name correctly?

Joe lives by a simple maxim: If you want to know which way the wind is blowing, stick your head up your ass.

user-pic

Self-serving scumbag who would have white-anted Al Gore at every turn.

user-pic

Thanks Bill, Hillary and Barack for doing nothing to help Lamont when he needed you.

Was this before or after the primary election? Judging from the debate, it sounds like it was before.

I don't like the idea of Lieberman endorsing a Republcan either, and believe this is sufficient grounds for kicking him out of the Democratic caucus (but with the partisan balance being 51-49, that's not going to happen).

But I think people are going a bit overboard with their criticism. If Lieberman had won the Democratic nomination, the critism would surely be justified. But he lost the nomination, left the party, declared himself and Independent Democrat, and was elected to the Senate primarily on the strength of Republican and independent voters.

Does anyone know whether Lieberman made a similar pledge during the general election campaign? I know that he pledged to caucus with the Democrats in the Senate, and so far he's done that. After delcaring himself an Independent Democrat, did he make any similar pledge to support only Democratic candidates?

CT has a lot to answer for. Seems like it's small enough that it could be dug up and transported to Texas, where idiots can be happy.

As far as Big Lie himself, my theory is that he's hoping McCain picks him for VP so he can spend another year blubbering about how God handpicked him to save America.

The Last Honest Man lied?

Say it ain't so!

Pass me the smelling salts Martha!

And he ain't got no Jesus to forgive him his sins like Huckie. The last honest man is doomed for Hell!!

user-pic

David Olstein, if Lieberman said, "I want...to elect a Democratic president in 2008" and then added the proviso, "as long as you vote for me in the Democratic primary, but if I lose that and then run as an Independent Democrat and get re-elected, all bets are off," then what you wrote might be applicable.

Since he did not, not so much.

user-pic

Wow, can Connecticut fire this guy as their Senator?

user-pic

Actually, David, according to the Senate bylaws agreed upon at the start of 2007, even if the balance of power shifts from one party to another, the leadership will not change.

After Jeffords surprised everyone, it has been a generally agreed-upon term and the Republicans in the Senate didn't want to retract it this session because it stung last time and they don't want it to happen to them again.

So, as someone who wants to see subpoenas issues from the Senate Homeland Security Committee for the response to Katrina, I say break his knees and dump him at the side of the chamber.

user-pic

and what does that say about a man whose supporters can't even spell his name correctly?

Yeah, but you gotta love that the resulting pronunciation would be more descriptive...

user-pic

It is no secret that everything Lieberman touches turns to shit.

I'm fairly certain in a few years we'll be rid of him. Hopefully then we can fill his spot with an actual Democrat.

user-pic

HoJo's been out of the news lately. And that's a good thing. He's a self absorbed jerk who's still pissed off that he lost the primary last year.
Today was his big day for a while. Crawl back under your rock, HoJo.
