Edwards Nabs First Iowa Newspaper Endorsement
There's some good cheer in the Edwards camp today -- he's scored the endorsement of the first Iowa newspaper that isn't for students.
"Edwards isn’t afraid to speak out against the political machine that has corrupted our system for years and has pledged as a candidate to refuse contributions from Washington lobbyists – a personal decision that is an important first step towards true campaign finance reform," says today's Valley News of Shenandoah, Iowa.
"In an unusually strong field of contenders, Edwards is by far the least polarizing of the other top tier candidates and will clearly provide Democrats the best chance of defeating the Republicans next November." Read the endorsement here.
Late Update: I should have specified that the Edwards campaign is claiming that this is the first endorsement from a daily non-college Iowa newspaper. The weekly Vinton Eagle endorsed Hillary earlier this week.

This was not the first Iowa newspaper endorsement. Hillary was endorsed by the Vinton Eagle last week. Why was that not reported??
Vinton Eagle Endorses Hillary Clinton for President
Benton County’s Vinton Eagle: "In 2008, Clinton is the best choice for America."
DES MOINES, IA - The Vinton Eagle, a weekly paper serving Benton County, endorsed Hillary Clinton for President today, saying "Sen. Clinton offers the complete package for what America needs in 2008."
The Eagle’s endorsement cited Hillary Clinton’s 15- year history of fighting for universal health care, her advocacy on behalf of children and families coping with autism, and her experience in foreign policy, saying,
"After eight years of indecision and mismanagement of the presidency, America needs greatness; someone who is already presidential; someone who is ready for the job...In the current field on either side, only one candidate fits that description, and that is Hillary Clinton."
With a paid circulation of over 2,500, and readership of over 5,000 residents, the Vinton Eagle is the most widely read local newspaper in Benton County

Didn't anyone read the Vinton Eagle (Vinton Iowa) endorsement of Hillary Clinton?
It's a very clearly written and lengthy endorsement.
Will TPM be reporting this?

BTW, the Vinton Eagle's endorsement of Senator Clinton was also today. So, how is it that Edwards is firstDD?

I'll tell you why. Because most of the writers here do NOT support Hillary Clinton. And if you haven't figured that out by now, I'm worried about our fellow readerships' reading comprehension abilities.
They've got alot of work to do, understand, and they cannot necessarily get everything out there. Besides, I am sure the MSM will do a fantastic job of covering endorsements of that type for Clinton. Cheerio!

The Storm Lake Tribune endorsed Joe Biden a couple of weeks ago.

Greg--I second Tom, you better check on The Storm Lake Tribune Endorsement, which may have been like a month ago.
I think the Edwards folks may be wrong here, unless Th Storm Lake Trib is a weekly like the Vinton paper.

In even worse news for Clinton, one of her 25 Iowa CO-CHAIRS just defected today to go support Obama! What a blow!

Sorry, it was the Storm Lake Times, not the Tribune that endorsed Biden. It was October 20th: http://stormlake.com/bidenendorsement.htm
I should have known better because the editor, Art Cullen, was the altar boy at my wedding many years ago.
The Storm Lake Times is a daily paper.
I was surprised when they endorsed Biden because Cullen is a very progressive editor.

The distinction (and an important one) is that it is a daily newspaper. The endorsements of Dailies are always more notable.
The endorsement was well written and well-reasoned. Hopefully, the Edwards campaign will flood the airwaves and mailboxes of Iowa with it.
I especially appreciated their noting that Edwards support isn't based on just one demographic group as Hillary's is by less informed women who often don't participate in electoral politics or Obama's support from young people.

The Storm Lake Times is a daily newspaper, so I am not clear why their endorsement of Biden does not count as the first Iowa endorsement of a daily.

Tom,
The Storm Lake Times stopped being a daily paper at least 10 years ago...Unless they've started back up.
Art was altar boy at your wedding? You know he just turned 50. He lived down the street from me when I lived there. He's a great editorial writer.

Henry,
I checked again, and you are right, they switched to a twice-weekly publication some years ago. Still, it's more than the Vinton paper. Not that I need to give Biden any credit, though I am leaving now for a fundraiser with him. Me, I am for Obama.
My wife is from Storm Lake and we were married there in 1973.

Thanks to TPM for updating and correcting the Edwards endorsement article. I just went and read it; somehow the violins were missing.
I suggest that readers compare the two endorsements, (Edwards and Clinton) and make up their minds which makes sense.
The Edwards endorsement can be found at:

DemAC, I guess you don't like actual well known information regarding the support Hillary gets from younger, less likely to participate females without which she would not be anywhere near leading the pack and the same is true for the large swell of younger voters for Obama--also less well informed and far less likely to actually participate in either caucuses or regular elections. These groups are supporting her because she is a woman: not for any other reason and Obama's young supporters are for him because he's young and black. They know little about where their candidates actually stand on any issues. Thus their support for their candidate is very fluid and changeable. Once they start paying more attention to what is actually being said, the deck is going to get shuffled in a pretty thorough manner.

LOL! Ah, me.
Actually, the well known fact is that Clinton tends to dominate the Democratic field among middle aged and older voters and married women in general. Obama's support tends to be concentrated in the youngest age groups, where he also draws about as much support among single women as Clinton in some polls.
You are correct however that a person's age is generally a strong predictor of voter participation -- with the likelihood of voting rising steadily up to about age 70. The same is true of marital status, particularly for women, with married women being significantly more likely to vote in general than single women.
In Iowa specifically, where John Edwards is also a strong contender (currently the only state besides NC where that is true) it's a somewhat different story. There, John Edwards seems to enjoy some advantage among the important demographic of middle aged past-caucus-goers. Both Clinton and Obama need to mobilize significant numbers of first-time caucus participants to overcome that advantage. Clinton however will be looking to bring out primarily middle aged and older married women who reside in Iowa. Obama of course will be looking more to the youngest demographics, including some college students from other states who are likely to be away for the holidays.

What CalD said above + Even though you’re ignorant, I’m sure you can read. For example take a look at this sheet on a national poll and, in any case, read up before you comment on something you don’t know squat about.
