Edwards Ad: This Holiday Season, Don't Forget The Poor

John Edwards has his own holiday-themed ad out, asking viewers to not forget homeless veterans, people living in poverty, and others who have been left behind:

"In America, the chance to build a better life is a promise made to each of us," Edwards says. "And the obligation to keep it, rests with us all."

Well, not terrible! I mean, they didn't do the whole smiling family and crackling fireplace and all, and he did talk about more important things... but still.

Dennis Kucinich's bother found dead in his home.

Notice that Edwards is the only one talking about serious issues. The rest are just doing cheesy family ads. That's because Edwards is the only one who really cares. You can see the sincerity dripping off of him. He's not afraid to confront Americans on their greed and lack of concern for the poor. The rest only want the power. They'll say whatever gets them votes.

It's a pretty good ad, but the background music is really cheesy and kind of distracting. Couldn't he use some holiday-themed music?

Me -
I will be pulling out some of my subprime loan hedge fund investments from offshore accounts and trying to stuff it all in that little bucket by the guy ringing the bell - all while I look in the mirror to see if any snow has fallen on my coif which I will immediately flick off as it makes little tiny curls which I just hate.

Nice. Edwards is a decent guy who's come a long way on progressive issue from his days as a hawkish Senator with crappy ratings on environmental issues. We've become so cynical that it's hard to trust someone who claims to have a genuine change of heart but I personally believe Edwards. That's why he's my second choice.

loki knows all about talking about "more important things"

priceless

Another Edwards mistake ,,
Most homeless Vets on the street will not vote. Just as he wasted valuable time when He went on his poverty tour...
If only he would be managed like Clinton and Obama...

His effort to give a voice to those without a voice will be exposed for what it is..

giving a voice to those without a voice..

How is this kind of ad swing undecided voters in Iowa and NH to his campaign? Full disclosure: I'm for Obama in the primaries, but if Obama doesn't win I'll happily support the Democratic nomination, and I'd MUCH rather that nominee be Edwards instead of Hillary. So I'm speaking with some fondness toward John here. I'm trying to put myself in the head of your average Iowa and NH undecideds sitting there around the holidays with family, and I just don't get how this works for them. It's just too "dark". Edwards camp...please do a better one!!

Hi Mike,

No, no... you're right. I could be wrong. I thought Obama's Christmas ad was a tad fatuous. I thought Edwards had a little more substance. But, you know, I'm probably way off the mark. ;^}

Where are Elizabeth and the Kids?!!!

Christmas is for families that is the point of the holiday season to rejoice and renew our spiritual committment to Christ by celebrating his birthday as a family unit.

I am disappointed that the family was not with John in this ad, the message is a good one, but jimmy crickets, everyone knows you are suppose to take care of home first.

eh, While I really liked Edward's original Two America's theme, he's wearing it a bit thin. Of course it's a hugely important issue, but he's just repeating himself and not building out the rest of his Presidential campaign.

He's actually trying and secure a position in the next Dem administration on poverty.

"Christmas is for families that is the point of the holiday season to rejoice and renew our spiritual committment to Christ by celebrating his birthday as a family unit."

Oh really? Did Jesus himself lay down that law? What about widows and widowers, parents without kids, kids without parents, unmarried priests... gee, I guess those people ought to just stay hidden out of sight until the holidays are over, so as to not frighten your tender and moralistic sensibilities.

I think Obama and Edwards both had perfectly viable approaches to their holiday ads.

Politically, Obama's ad was about his core message of uniting the American people around their common values and interests, and his traditional, family-oriented images fit with that theme. Similarly, politically Edwards's ad was about his core message of being an advocate for the poor, and that is one of the few issue-oriented political messages which I think people will see as consistent with the holiday season. Of course, his being alone in the ad fit with that theme.

But if you want to see a holiday ad that doesn't work, check out Giuliani's ad: that is a total trainwreck. He mentions a whole laundry list of his policy positions, and characterizes them as gifts he is planning to give to the American people. Not only is jamming all those policy positions into a holiday ad tone-deaf for a season which already has strong pre-existing themes of its own, but the whole notion of Giuliani being in the position to give out policy items as gifts reinforces the idea that Giuliani views himself in dictatorial terms.

And he ends with a truly bizarre exchange involving a fruitcake, which I think was supposed to show he has a sense of humor. But in conjunction with the political hackery that is already in the ad, I think those lame and forced attempts at humor just made him look even more of a hack.

So Giuliani's holiday ad was terrible, and I think the contrast helps show how Obama and Edwards did a much better job, albeit each in their own ways.

As always Senator Edwards is thoughtful, compassionate and right on the mark. This is a time we should all be considering those less fortunate. Unfortunately with high oil prices, a cold winter ahead, and sputtering economy that includes lots of previously middle class people.

John Edwards is the candidate that can address this head on for the good of the country.

He has overseas hedge funds siphoning money off of bush's poor "home ownership"
subprime loan suckers.

He is a phoney
