Author Of Obama Muslim Smear Piece Is Giuliani Adviser
As Ben Smith noted over the weekend, conservative writer Daniel Pipes has authored a new piece that unveils the next Obama Muslim smear. Pipes wrote:
"If I were a Muslim I would let you know," Barack Obama has said, and I believe him.
...suggesting that the next conservative attack on Obama could be, "he says he's not a Muslim, and I believe him."
It's worth adding a second point: That Pipes, whose hostility to Islam is well documented, is one of Giuliani's foreign policy advisers.
As reported here over the weekend, the co-chair of New Hampshire Veterans for Rudy was forced to resign after he said some unkind stuff about Muslims. There's just something in Rudy's rhetoric that seems to prick up the ears of folks with views like these.

John Edwards is viewed favorably by 49%, unfavorably by 42% and Hillary Clinton is the only other candidate with favorable above 43%. She is viewed favorably by 48% and unfavorably by 50%.
Barack Obama earns favorably reviews from 43%, Fred Thompson from 42%, Mike Huckabee and Rudy Giuliani from 40%. Mitt Romney has the lowest total at 38%. Fifty-one percent (51%) have an unfavorable opinion of the former Massachusetts Governor. That unfavorable rating is matched by Obama and topped only by Giuliani at 55%
OBAMA 43, 51
Clinton 48, 50
Edwards 49, 42
Romney 38, 51

Well, well, well. What do ya think of that.
Keith wrote on December 31, 2007 1:13 PM:Seems if you click through on the additional information, the favorability/unfavorability numbers seem to suggest that Edwards and Obama are essentially tied on unfavorability (44/45), with Obama having a higher favorability 53 vs. 48. That's the problem with daily tracking polls, they pick up a lot of noise.

Does Ben Smith subscribe to the Pipes newsletter? Is he a regular follower of David Horowitz? I doubt it -- so hmmm, how did this little story come to Ben's attention? Pipes is a monster -- a racist and cringe-inducing far-right neo-con. Yes, he is Guiliani's advisor -- but its not like he has a huge following. This could have stayed fairly obscure -- just like the ugly gossip about Edwards and Clinton has been relagated to the underbelly of the internet. No, this little item was deliberately planted by the Clinton campaign for the express purpose of inciting panic in Iowa voters four days before the caucus that Obama is "unelectable" because the right-wing muslim smear. This plays perfectly into the "I am fully vetted" line that Hillary is so fond of pushing. The depths of depravity by all involved with this smear -- from Pipes right on through to the Clinton campaign and the rags that "just are reporting what people are saying" is beyond contempt.

You've got to hand it to the Clintons - they know if they keep trotting out baseless smear after baseless smear, it will finally gain some traction (of the "some people say" variety) in the media.
Their whole strtegy vis a vis Obama seems to be "there MIGHT be something in his past that the Republicans can use against him in the general election." This fear of Republican talking points has been the most prominent feature of Democrats' electoral strategy since at least Bill Clinton, and it has resulted in the continued devaluation of the liberal Democratic brand. I, for one, am sick and tired of continually following a losing strategy.
Furthermore, no matter what's in Obama's past, it can be spun negatively. If dirt is not there to spin, they'll make it up.
Finally, if she thinks the Repubs can trash Obama, with his limited national career, just think what they'll do to Hillary as they revisit Fostergate, Travelgate, Lewinskygate, ad nauseum.
Again, I'm not suggesting that she (and we, if she is the nominee) should run in fear from it, but to suggest that Obama is a riper target than Hillary for Republican attacks is just ridiculous.
This whole muslim "smear" thing is really sad. Just because someone is a muslim does not make them a bad person. There are over 1 billion muslims in the world and they are not all bad people. Come on, its like there are bad christians as well. Does that make all christians bad? It really is pathetic that the fear mongering and distortions by this administration and the republican party have basically turned being a muslim into a dirty word. Pathetic. When will 9/12 come?
paDem wrote on December 31, 2007 3:02 PM:Being a muslim does not make someone a bad person. But "Michael A" you forgot to add to your concerned comment that Barack is NOT a Muslim, in any case, so the issue is moot.
Nice try.

I suppose it's to the credit of the Republican primary electorate that they look poised to reject his implied promise to tighten up the loose Francoite state that Bush/Cheney have started to impose on the US.
Then again, maybe his political problem is that his hate doesn't go far enough--if the perception were that he was as rabidly disposed toward gays and slutty liberal women as he is to Muslims, he'd probably still be the front-runner.
Thabo Mda wrote on December 31, 2007 3:59 PM:There is no longer any doubt that the negative information or misinformation orchestrated to cast Barack Obama as a Moslem have been co-ordinated at the highest level of the Clinton campaign with the full blessings of both Hillary Clinton and her husband. And at times with the complicit participation of the Republican dirt-gathering propaganda machine, enter Rudy Guiliani and his surrogate henchmen Daniel Pipes and Ben Smith who has been spotted on numerous in the company of Blii Clinton.

Now Donna L, be so kind as to define neo-con.
I still wonder why Obama will not pledge his allegence to the flag. If you want to read something really bizare, check out the home page of the church that he attends. Thier allegence is with Africa not the U.S.A. and they do not let whites join. Just sayin'

Greg Sargent: Here's your Karl-Rove-in-South-Carolina-in-2000 whisper campaign sliming and character assassination, only against a Democrat, and on behalf of, we can only presume, a certain other Democrat.

No Will, it means you are a either stupid or a shill.
Obama is not a muslim, never has been.
But you already know that, right?
