Another Poll Shows New Hampshire Dem Race Tightening

Hillary Clinton has been enjoying an overwhelming lead in New Hampshire polls over the last few months — but not anymore. The new Rasmussen poll shows Hillary at 33%, Barack Obama with 26%, and John Edwards at 15%. This confirms other recent polls showing a tightening race in New Hampshire.

The Hillary campaign had been building up New Hampshire as their "firewall" against a poor result in Iowa, but the recent trends indicate they're going to have to work here, too. This poll was taken before the recent hostage crisis at Hillary's Rochester office, so there's no telling how (or if) that could affect the polls.

When voters take a close look, they realize Mrs. Bill Clinton is not qualified to be president, can't give a straitforward answer on any topic (witha consistent accent), is running a mean and dirty campaign, and is owned by corporate special interests. Voters in Iowa are seeing it, now New Hampshire, South Carolina soon. If this trend continues, my faith in the American voter may be restored.

We don't need more of the Bushes or the Clintons. Time to move forward.

I don't see why this hostage situation should have an effect on the elections. But, then again, who knows what sort of psychological factors are at work...

user-pic

I can think of two ways the hostage thing might have an effect. Women, especially those who support Clinton, are fed up with abusive men---it is often a part of their lives, to one extent or another. This could strengthen their emotional ties to her.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I hated the manipulative ad she ran about trust---using a man in his forties who called her for help with his son's bone marrow transplant---I thought it was irrelevant to the issues of trust and healthcare----and to that, i would now add it sets a bad example of how to deal with big personal issues---call a bigshot and have them fix it---but I doubt that would resonate or connect for many.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

splain this logic from the writers at rasmussen----the 24 point gap from tuesday in their national tracking polls is down to 9 today----yet Hillary still has a commanding lead????--------------------------

(In New Hampshire)Clinton’s seven-point advantage is down from a ten-point lead in early November. In October, Clinton held a sixteen-point advantage over Obama. A month earlier, Clinton was ahead by twenty-three percentage points.

Clinton Hostage-Taker Allegedly Cited Her Campaign Ad

ABC News' Kate Snow reports: ABC News has learned that Leeland Eisenberg -- the man accused of holding hostages at Hillary Clinton's Rochester, N.H., campaign office for six hours on Friday -- allegedly cited one of Clinton's campaign commercials when police say he entered the office and claimed to have a pipe bomb strapped to his chest.

According to sources, the campaign office intruder was complaining about insurance issues and mentioned a recent campaign ad widely seen by New Hampshire voters.

"She helped that guy, she can help me," Eisenberg allegedly told Clinton campaign staffers, referring to Joe Ward, a Clinton supporter featured in the ad. The intruder then demanded that Sen. Clinton talk with him. On the advice of law enforcement officials, the senator never did.

Eisenberg never actually had a bomb, authorities said, but had road flares strapped to his chest. The hostages could not see what was under his jacket and believed it could be a bomb, they added.

Joe Ward is a New Yorker who was also featured in TV ads when Clinton ran for Senate in 2000.

In the testimonial ad, which features somber piano music, Ward intones: "Let me tell you a little story. My son Joel had a terrible illness. He needed a bone marrow transplant that our insurance wouldn't cover and we couldn't afford. We called Sen. Clinton and asked for help. Her office called the next day, letting us know that the hospital was going to absorb the cost of the transplant. Now her opponents are saying that Hillary can't be trusted? I trusted this woman to save my son's life, and she did."

If women who have been abused by men are honest, they will also see that Hillary has been an enabler and dishonest protector of one of the world's most famous misogynists.

There is a considerable public record now accusing Bill Clinton of being a serial, chronic exploiter, abuser of women or worse. It says Hillary led efforts to minimize the impact of Clinton's female accusers with the famous "bimbo patrol" including private eyes Anthony Pellicano and Jack Palladino. These accounts say that Hillary was party to efforts to intemidate women with whom Bill had been involved, and to accuse the victims.
We also know that both Bill and Hillary have lied publicly about Bill and other women.

Hillary in her "autobiography" Living History (2003) when she insists she had no inkling that her husband had lied to her about Monica until the day before his grand-jury testimony.

A few women may not admire Hillary's record on standing up for abused women:
Maybe Paula Jones, Harsha Scott, Linda Jones, Sally Perdue, Kathleen Wiley, Gennifer Flowers, Dolly Kyle Browning, Juanita Broaddrick, Monica Lewinsky, Susan McDougal, numerous White House staffers (wink, wink), Denise Rich, Beth Dozoretz, Belinda Stronach, Segolene Royal, an unnamed "forty-something divorcee in Chappaqua, N.Y" AND... have a different view of Hillary.

Do women really see Hillary Clinton as admirable on women's issues such as abuse?

From a Clinton biographer:

"Bill Clinton's behavior pushed an unfortunate human tendency to a pathological and blatant extreme. [He] seemed to tempt fate about what others treated with some degree of discretion, necessitating a first ever presidential 'bimbo eruptions unit'", a function now transferred to the 'Hillary for President' campaign.

Umm, none of the foregoing has much to do with the Iowa poll.

Because the poor bastard was clearly mentally disturbed, rather than someone with a political agenda, I doubt that the hostage thing will do more than give her a two or three point five day bump.

She's now down below ten in the Rasmussen national daily after a blip in the two days before and after Turkey day that seems to indicate that her supporters were more likely to be at home while Obama's were more likely to be on the road. (That would probably be the age difference thing at work).

All in all, I'm predicting we're in for even more panic-driven lashing out and flailing from her campaign in the next two weeks. (Anyone who doesn't think her oppo people were behind that John Solomon hit job last week is, well, naive, to use a word Hillaroids used to be very fond of.)

I think Clinton's sliding numbers show that as folk come to know they come to dislike her.

I think that Obama should take note and stop using right wing rhetoric on healthcare and Social Security to run against Clinton.

I think the Democratic Party needs to nominate a Democrat and that exludes Richardson, Obama and Clinton.

Of course this poll was also taken before another poll came out with similar numbers. The next polls, however, will be taken with people being aware of these new numbers showing a tightening race in NH.

And that is important because among the results reported by Rasmussen was that 54% of the respondents believe Clinton will win the primary. If the latest polls cause that number to go down, then her numbers might go down further in the next poll, and so on until any current bandwagon effect is eliminated.

By the way, according to Ambinder, the latest Des Moines Register poll shows Obama and Huckabee leading in Iowa.

I expect that to be pretty big newe in Iowa at least.

user-pic

Here are links to the new DM Register Iowa poll.

Democrats
Republicans

That makes it official as far as I'm concerned. This makes three polls out of the last five to give Obama a point or two over Clinton and I tend to regard the DM Register/Seltzer poll as the gold standard of Iowa polls anyway. So I tend to think that's probably right. It will be interesting to see what John Edwards does. It's also kind of interesting that the Register has done three polls this year and so far the lead has changed hands in each of them.

Let's see. Seven point lead with Hillary's organization and Bill ready to come in and stump with her in the last few weeks.

Still like her chances, sorry to rain on the Hillogynist parade taking place here. I still fully expect her to take New Hampshire on her way to South Carolina, etc.

BTW - Choking, irrational, ignorant hatred is a terrible thing to waste. I hear Nader is thinking of turning his attention from managing his stock portfolio on line for a couple months and maybe running again. You would make better use of your time polishing off your resumes and trying for a job with him if he does.

The rest of us, and most of America, will be voting to elect the first woman President in the glorious history of our progressive nation.

I can only take comfort in the fact that you will enjoy the fruits of a Clinton presidency as will all of us fact-based, liberal progressive Dems who vote for her in the primaries.

colonpowwow,

Just a casual reminder, but at this point in 2004, Kerry was down over 20 points to Dean in NH. Of course he ended up winning by 12, well over a 30 point swing.

DTM:

Sure, still anybody's race. A good primary race is good for democracy. I still like her chances though. You?

My cheerleading was just my little pro-Clinton fantasy that I believe still has more of a basis in fact and a likely outcome than do any of the ten or so anti-Hillary fantasies listed here.

Anonymous at 4:40 pm:

Any bets on whether Democrats are more sick of the shocking sexual behaviors of the Clintons or sick of hearing about it now that the Republicans are on the way back out?

I could use the money. As a founding member of the NOW chapter in Milwaukee, my question is only "how did (s)he vote and carry water on the policy issues important to women?".

The inquiring-minds-want-to-know stuff that you tender is as relevant to making good public policy as Keith Richard's reprobate behavior is to making good love songs.

user-pic

colonpowwow,

I tend to avoid trying to put odds on these things, because too much is unknown right now. And in this case, with the Iowa polls being so darn close, I think even if Iowa was voting this week it would still be a crapshoot.
